Summary

“This debut novel about an Irish expat millennial teaching English and finding romance in Hong Kong is half Sally Rooney love triangle, half glitzy Crazy Rich Asians high living—and guaranteed to please。”  Vogue

An intimate, bracingly intelligent debut novel about a millennial Irish expat who becomes entangled in a love triangle with a male banker and a female lawyer

Ava, newly arrived in Hong Kong from Dublin, spends her days teaching English to rich children。

Julian is a banker。 A banker who likes to spend money on Ava, to have sex and discuss fluctuating currencies with her。 But when she asks whether he loves her, he cannot say more than "I like you a great deal。"

Enter Edith。 A Hong Kong–born lawyer, striking and ambitious, Edith takes Ava to the theater and leaves her tulips in the hallway。 Ava wants to be her—and wants her。

And then Julian writes to tell Ava he is coming back to Hong Kong。。。 Should Ava return to the easy compatibility of her life with Julian or take a leap into the unknown with Edith?

Politically alert, heartbreakingly raw, and dryly funny, Exciting Times is thrillingly attuned to the great freedoms and greater uncertainties of modern love。 In stylish, uncluttered prose, Naoise Dolan dissects the personal and financial transactions that make up a life—and announces herself as a singular new voice。

I really struggled to finish this。 It was trying so hard to be clever that it just became a chore to read。 Like, not every single line of the book has to be clever。 On top of that, the characters were completely unlikable, except maybe Edith。 Would not recommend。

A book that plays beautifully with language。 A book about politics and class but the main character is the language we call English。 It is a book I plan to re read as the story has many layers。 Next however I will read it without audible narration。 This is in no way meant to criticise the narration as it is very good and helped get an understanding of the overarching narrative in a way I don't think I would have fully appreciated fully had I read text alone on a first read。 However to fully appr A book that plays beautifully with language。 A book about politics and class but the main character is the language we call English。 It is a book I plan to re read as the story has many layers。 Next however I will read it without audible narration。 This is in no way meant to criticise the narration as it is very good and helped get an understanding of the overarching narrative in a way I don't think I would have fully appreciated fully had I read text alone on a first read。 However to fully appreciate the genius of this novel I feel you may also need to read it slowly, carefully and marvel at how it is put together linguistically。 Speaking personally I like how the narrator in the novel (not to be confused with audible narration necessarily) is also a proud socialist! 。。。more

3。75/5 starsThis was um interesting? The writing style was unique and sometimes fun to read, but also sometimes boring and weird (also cuz there was absolutely no plot)。 Some parts were really fun but others were just somewhat depressing and the ending was kinda really infuriating and shouldn’t have ended there。 Low-key hated the main character but also low-key loved her and the way she put everything she felt into words so well

This was such an enjoyable read! I loved Dolan’s sardonic humour and biting social commentary。 In particular, her mediations on the English language and the dissections of power and class dynamics were remarkably astute。 The ease with which Dolan manages to mine the mundane details of interpersonal relationships to produce scenes of such emotional charge is masterful。 The most glaring frustration I had with this book was the superficiality of its choice of setting。 As someone who was born and ra This was such an enjoyable read!

An interesting but mildly frustrating Irish protagonist navigates two contrasting relationships while living in Hong Kong。 A bittersweet snapshot of the beauty and the turbulence of human emotion, similar in style to Sally Rooney’s writing。

I'd be hard pressed to find something good to say about this story。 A young woman arrives in Hong Kong to teach English to children。 She has a couple of lunches with a man, ends up living rent free in his apartment with him。 Their sex is a matter of convenience for him。 She considers it pay for her free ride which evolves into her having his AmEx for whatever she would like。 He's called away on business for six months by which time she confirms her homosexuality and falls in love with a woman。 T I'd be hard pressed to find something good to say about this story。 A young woman arrives in Hong Kong to teach English to children。 She has a couple of lunches with a man, ends up living rent free in his apartment with him。 Their sex is a matter of convenience for him。 She considers it pay for her free ride which evolves into her having his AmEx for whatever she would like。 He's called away on business for six months by which time she confirms her homosexuality and falls in love with a woman。 The story goes nowhere。 I never cared about the characters or the outcome。 What is supposed to pass for intelligence is really just mind games these three are playing。 A big yawn。 。。。more

I was sceptical re。 the Sally Rooney comparisons because being a young white Irish woman who writes about relationships isn’t like。。。a genre。 But I think this was even sharper, more poignant and just funnier than Normal People。 I love this growing group of contemporary authors who are able to hone in on what is seemingly mundane everyday stuff and give it the weight it is so often felt with in real life。 Really magical stuff。

Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan3。5 out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Here we find a 22 year old girl called Ava, born in Ireland but, on a whim, moves to Hong Kong to teach English as a foreign language。 Ava spends the whole book obsessing over someone, Julian to start, followed by Edith。 It is sold as a 'modern love story' and sadly I think that is what it is。 We begin by meeting Julian, a banker who went to Oxford。 Ava likes the back and forth she has with him。 She likes that there is no commitment。 She also hates b Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan3。5 out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Here we find a 22 year old girl called Ava, born in Ireland but, on a whim, moves to Hong Kong to teach English as a foreign language。 Ava spends the whole book obsessing over someone, Julian to start, followed by Edith。 It is sold as a 'modern love story' and sadly I think that is what it is。 We begin by meeting Julian, a banker who went to Oxford。 Ava likes the back and forth she has with him。 She likes that there is no commitment。 She also hates both of these things。 They have sex but Julian tells her from the start that they will never be a couple。 Then we move onto Edith, a lawyer who went to Cambridge。 Ava is bisexual and when Edith comes along she finds a different kind of 'love' (I'm not convinced what she had with Julian deserves this title), this time, Edith is happy to call her her girlfriend, happy to go on dates, Edith wants to make Ava happy, and they do make one another happy。 But with Ava from Ireland and Edith from Hong Kong this relationship still cannot be completely public, and that proves hard for them both。I actually quite liked all three main characters but the whole book was really rather self indulgent。 Ava spends the whole time obsessing over either Julian or Edith。 Constantly checking their social media accounts。 Writing and re writing messages to them。 Over analysing everything。 Putting herself down at every opportunity。 And whilst many of these things ring true for our society today it got a bit much as the book went on。 Nevertheless, I enjoyed the characters and much of the back and forth between Ava and the others is clever and funny。 Overall, an easy read, that perhaps just reminds one of some of the less pleasing aspects of our modern society。 。。。more

Very British, reminded me a lot of Sally Rooney, but I am not a huge fan of her writing。 The main character annoyed me the whole book because she talks all the time about how she's weird and that's why no one likes her but maybe she just sucks。 The author uses unnecessarily complex words and phrases, like "blashpheme" instead of just saying the person lies。 Reminds me of English teachers telling students not to just look up words in the thesaurus and replace them because it sounds fancier。 It ma Very British, reminded me a lot of Sally Rooney, but I am not a huge fan of her writing。 The main character annoyed me the whole book because she talks all the time about how she's weird and that's why no one likes her but maybe she just sucks。 The author uses unnecessarily complex words and phrases, like "blashpheme" instead of just saying the person lies。 Reminds me of English teachers telling students not to just look up words in the thesaurus and replace them because it sounds fancier。 It made the main character seem even more pretentious and annoying。 And even though I didn't like the characters that much or have a preference for who she would end up with, the ending just contributed to my dislike of the main charcter。 。。。more

I can definitely see the comparisons to Sally Rooney here - both Irish millennials writing contemporary literary fiction about Irish millennials experiencing intense relationships in their early 20s。 This has been on my TBR list since it was first published, so I'm glad to finally get around to it。This book at times strays towards the pretentious, and at times I felt like I needed a bit more knowledge on certain topics, although that's perhaps more of a judgement on me than the book。 The story t I can definitely see the comparisons to Sally Rooney here - both Irish millennials writing contemporary literary fiction about Irish millennials experiencing intense relationships in their early 20s。 This has been on my TBR list since it was first published, so I'm glad to finally get around to it。This book at times strays towards the pretentious, and at times I felt like I needed a bit more knowledge on certain topics, although that's perhaps more of a judgement on me than the book。 The story touches on the impact of British colonialism on both Ireland and Hong Kong, as well as the role of wealth/class in society。For me the stand out element of Exciting Times was Ava's relationship with Edith - I loved them and their frank conversations DEARLY。 。。。more
