Summary

Jay Shetty, social media superstar and host of the #1 podcast On Purpose, distills the timeless wisdom he learned as a monk into practical steps anyone can take every day to live a less anxious, more meaningful life。

When you think like a monk, you’ll understand:
- How to overcome negativity
- How to stop overthinking
- Why comparison kills love
- How to use your fear
- Why you can’t find happiness by looking for it
- How to learn from everyone you meet
- Why you are not your thoughts
- How to find your purpose
- Why kindness is crucial to success
- And much more。。。

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure。 His family was convinced he had chosen option three: instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others。 After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others。 Heavily in debt, and with no recognizable skills on his résumé, he moved back home in north London with his parents。

Shetty reconnected with old school friends—many working for some of the world’s largest corporations—who were experiencing tremendous stress, pressure, and unhappiness, and they invited Shetty to coach them on well-being, purpose, and mindfulness。 Since then, Shetty has become one of the world’s most popular influencers。 In 2017, he was named in the Forbes magazine 30-under-30 for being a game-changer in the world of media。 In 2018, he had the #1 video on Facebook with over 360 million views。 His social media following totals over 38 million, he has produced over 400 viral videos which have amassed more than 8 billion views, and his podcast, On Purpose, is consistently ranked the world’s #1 Health and Wellness podcast。

In this inspiring, empowering book, Shetty draws on his time as a monk to show us how we can clear the roadblocks to our potential and power。 Combining ancient wisdom and his own rich experiences in the ashram, Think Like a Monk reveals how to overcome negative thoughts and habits, and access the calm and purpose that lie within all of us。 He transforms abstract lessons into advice and exercises we can all apply to reduce stress, improve relationships, and give the gifts we find in ourselves to the world。 Shetty proves that everyone can—and should—think like a monk。

I could not stop taking notes while reading this book and this emoji 🤯 is actual footage of me reading this book。 He does a terrific job of sharing exercises, meditations, and insights that he has gained from living as a monk。 Something powerful he shares about detachment is that it’s doing the right thing for its own sake because it needs to be done, without worrying about success or failure。 Detachment is not about owning nothing, but not allowing anything to own you。 🤯 5 stars & beyond。

This is a nice little book about mindfulness, introspection, and self-awareness and how to bring these into our work, relationships, and overall lives。 I like the parables Shetty sprinkles throughout the book。 There is nothing very profound here though。 It's perhaps a bit glossy, but different styles work for different people and this is still a good introduction for anyone new to mindfulness and meditation。 This is a nice little book about mindfulness, introspection, and self-awareness and how to bring these into our work, relationships, and overall lives。 I like the parables Shetty sprinkles throughout the book。 There is nothing very profound here though。 It's perhaps a bit glossy, but different styles work for different people and this is still a good introduction for anyone new to mindfulness and meditation。 。。。more

An insightful book on mindfulness/meditation and how when we remove all of the noise of life, and focus on how using our natural gifts to serve others will leave us more fulfilled while also making the world a better place。

I have listened to many episodes of Jay Shetty's podcast and found many of his ideas very interesting。 This prompted me to pick up this book。I really liked this book specially the lessons he has included from his own life。 The message is very powerful。Ofcourse like any other self help book it contains a lot of concepts that one can't inculcate in their life in one go。 So I will be trying to work on some of the ideas described by the author。It's a fascinating and powerful idea to "Think like a mo I have listened to many episodes of Jay Shetty's podcast and found many of his ideas very interesting。 This prompted me to pick up this book。I really liked this book specially the lessons he has included from his own life。 The message is very powerful。Ofcourse like any other self help book it contains a lot of concepts that one can't inculcate in their life in one go。 So I will be trying to work on some of the ideas described by the author。It's a fascinating and powerful idea to "Think like a monk"。 。。。more

The book is written in a language that can be easily understood by a beginner level reader。 The content, however, is detailed and in-depth and may take beginners some time to get through。 “Think Like a Monk” is a book that helps us live a more peaceful and purposeful life; one that is full of gratitude and brimming with positivity。 No, the book doesn’t promise us overnight miracles, but what it does promise is a sense of calmness, a change of attitude, more love, more positivity, and better clar The book is written in a language that can be easily understood by a beginner level reader。 The content, however, is detailed and in-depth and may take beginners some time to get through。 “Think Like a Monk” is a book that helps us live a more peaceful and purposeful life; one that is full of gratitude and brimming with positivity。 No, the book doesn’t promise us overnight miracles, but what it does promise is a sense of calmness, a change of attitude, more love, more positivity, and better clarity of who we are。 Broadly divided into three sections – Let Go (Identity, Negativity, Fear, and Intention), Grow (Purpose, Routine, The Mind, and Ego) and Give (Gratitude, Relationships, and Service), the book effectively charts out a course for living a more peaceful and content life。 There are many interesting and novel concepts that I learned through this book。 For example, in Jay’s own words – “Mudita is the principle of taking sympathies or unselfish joy in the good fortune of others。”Jay also brings out the stark contrast between the monk mind and the monkey mind。 A monkey mind is one that overthinks and procrastinates, is distracted by small things, seeks short term gratifications, is demanding and feels entitled, is self-centered and obsessed with multi-tasking, and is controlled by anger, worry and fear。While the monk mind is single-task focused, looks for meaning and genuine solutions, controls and engages energy wisely, is enthusiastic, determined, and patient, seeks long term gains, and is compassionate, caring, and collaborative。Similarly, Jay also talks about many novel concepts like the cancers of the mind, the quadrants of potential, the circle of love, double-edged ego, chariot of the mind, etc。 Contrary to popular beliefs and general wisdom, Jay Shetty offers you an opposite viewpoint on concepts like multitasking, venting out frustrations, feelings and emotions, and about the importance of succeeding early in life。 There are a lot of novel concepts that the readers take away from the book。 The lessons are practical and implementable, while some tools and techniques make it easy for a reader to follow through on the learnings。 The Vedic Personality included at the end of the book is an unexpected bonus。 Further, most of the topics are very relevant to a modern individual。Things like anxiety, negativity, disappointment, stress, deteriorating quality of relationships, media clutter, device overdose, and inadequate sleep are ailments that bother most of us。 In that sense, ‘Think Like a Monk’ is specifically written to cater to the needs of the twenty-first-century individual。 。。。more

For me, this was something different and very welcome。 The book offers a personal story of growth and realization, theory and philosophy from the author's time studying to become a monk, and practical advise on a purposeful life (even if you are not a monk and don't aspire to become one!)。 But what made me especially happy was the way the book admits that it's OK to take baby-steps, and that you don't have to be a superhuman (or a monk) while realising a better life for yourself。 Just start some For me, this was something different and very welcome。 The book offers a personal story of growth and realization, theory and philosophy from the author's time studying to become a monk, and practical advise on a purposeful life (even if you are not a monk and don't aspire to become one!)。 But what made me especially happy was the way the book admits that it's OK to take baby-steps, and that you don't have to be a superhuman (or a monk) while realising a better life for yourself。 Just start somewhere and try to change the way you see the world。 I will surely be thinking of purpose and service in a new way after reading this。 。。。more

I don’t even know why this dude is in the limelight despite knowing he’s plagiarising majority of the content already posted out there by others (ofcourse!)。 I don’t buy the fact he’s been a “monk” for XYZ years and now has become self-help guru at such a young age。 This book seems like a bootleg version of many self help books which have been published in the past。 I’m not trying to induce hatred here but I prefer something that’s worth reading。 Personally, I’m not very fond of self help books I don’t even know why this dude is in the limelight despite knowing he’s plagiarising majority of the content already posted out there by others (ofcourse!)。 I don’t buy the fact he’s been a “monk” for XYZ years and now has become self-help guru at such a young age。 This book seems like a bootleg version of many self help books which have been published in the past。 I’m not trying to induce hatred here but I prefer something that’s worth reading。 Personally, I’m not very fond of self help books and I took my chance by reading this binder。 All that social media verbiage posts promoting this book is a part of an entrepreneurial gesture and NOT Monk like thinking。 。。。more

。。。more

It was hard to finish this book for all the good reasons。 Every chapter in this book challenges me to re-examine how I view and react to all the ups and downs that I’ve experienced in my life。 Therefore, I would pause quite frequently to practice what each chapter preaches。 I like how there are little exercises that Jay Shetty spreads throughout the book to help readers apply his advice in our daily lives。 I’ve learned to meditate and practice gratitude。 I want this book to go on for a long time It was hard to finish this book for all the good reasons。 Every chapter in this book challenges me to re-examine how I view and react to all the ups and downs that I’ve experienced in my life。 Therefore, I would pause quite frequently to practice what each chapter preaches。 I like how there are little exercises that Jay Shetty spreads throughout the book to help readers apply his advice in our daily lives。 I’ve learned to meditate and practice gratitude。 I want this book to go on for a long time and accompany me while I’m still learning to practice mindfulness and adjusting to all the changes that are happening in my life。 But I can only delay finishing this book for so long。 Anyways, this book will be one of those books that I’d revisit every now and then。 。。。more

What I liked most in this book were the legends and little stories that were brought to light by the author! Yes, his story was interesting as well, and I had a lot to learn from his ways, but I enjoyed more all the empowering quotes from remarkable people I wouldn’t have heard of otherwise。

I listened to this book and was very thought provoking。 So many things we do routinely that cause stress, only if we can just take some time out and give our brain a break and meditate。 Made me pause and think many a times。 So many of the practices I need to implement! Starting with few mts every morning or night to meditate。
