Summary

Andreas lives his whole life in the Austrian Alps, where he arrives as a young boy taken in by a farming family。 He is a man of very few words and so, when he falls in love with Marie, he doesn't ask for her hand in marriage, but instead has some of his friends light her name at dusk across the mountain。 When Marie dies in an avalanche, pregnant with their first child, Andreas' heart is broken。 He leaves his valley just once more, to fight in WWII - where he is taken prisoner in the Caucasus - and returns to find that modernity has reached his remote haven。。。

Beautiful prose from Seethaler, nicely narrated translation by Collins。 Very good read。

A quiet book about a quiet man trying to find and maintain a small home and love in the mountains only to lose both and spend his many remaining years unmoved by history unfolding around him and with just a weary heartbeat to distinguish him from the frozen men concealed in these hills。

Bbc:n world book clubin huhtikuun kirja, en varmaankaan muuten olisi tarttunut tähän。 Kuvailu oli kaunista, ja elämäntarina herätti ajatuksia。 Erityisesti maisemakuvauksesta pidin。 Olisin kuitenkin voinut millä tahansa sivulla jättää kirjan kesken, enkä olisi jäänyt kaipaamaan tietoa siitä, mitä seuraavaksi tapahtuu。 En osannut välittää henkilöistä tai liikuttua tarinasta kovinkaan paljon。 Tuiki tavallisesta tarinasta ei ole mieleenpainuvaksi romaaniksi。 Kaunista kieltä, mutta ei sen enempää。

A solid but never really surprising novella about the life of Andreas Egger - a life which was not remarkable, but that is stoically carried out by its protagonist。 Pain is endured, pleasure is accepted, but not sought。 Comparisons with 'Stoner', which I have not read as of yet, seem justified。Seethaler writes well, without ever stopping you in your tracks。 Very middle of the road for me。 A solid but never really surprising novella about the life of Andreas Egger - a life which was not remarkable, but that is stoically carried out by its protagonist。 Pain is endured, pleasure is accepted, but not sought。 Comparisons with 'Stoner', which I have not read as of yet, seem justified。Seethaler writes well, without ever stopping you in your tracks。 Very middle of the road for me。 。。。more

。。。more

This is the first translated book I have read, and I enjoyed it。The simplicity of the narrative very much reflected Egger's attitude to life and key moments as a whole。This book was very wholesome, whilst covering many tragic and overwhelming events。 This is the first translated book I have read, and I enjoyed it。The simplicity of the narrative very much reflected Egger's attitude to life and key moments as a whole。This book was very wholesome, whilst covering many tragic and overwhelming events。 。。。more

Hauska pieni kirja。 Aikamatka 1900-luvun halki pienessä alppikylässä asuvan yksinäisen Eggerin hahmossa on hyvä idea ja kirjailija on selvästi kotonaan tuossa fiktiivisessä (?) kylässä。 Luettelomaisuudeltakin onnistuttiin aika hyvin välttymään。 Täytyypä tutkia muita Seethalerin kirjoja。

This book is good for the soul。Seethaler seamlessly weaves past, present and future to paint us a whole life through then decades。 With an understated grace and simple beauty, his novel and protagonist serve as an antidote to a world screaming “look at me!” Every chance it gets。 The incessant barrage of youtubers vying to commit the most obscene act yet to celebrities naming their children things like “X Æ A-Xiil” to social media users saying the most shocking things for the sake of it。 Andreas This book is good for the soul。Seethaler seamlessly weaves past, present and future to paint us a whole life through then decades。 With an understated grace and simple beauty, his novel and protagonist serve as an antidote to a world screaming “look at me!” Every chance it gets。 The incessant barrage of youtubers vying to commit the most obscene act yet to celebrities naming their children things like “X Æ A-Xiil” to social media users saying the most shocking things for the sake of it。 Andreas Eggers in these pages is the antithesis of all this。I loved this book。In a slender 150 pages, we get his entire life and all experiences within: love, loss, employment and its changes, pain, abuse, kindness, hope。 In Eggers life, the particular becomes the universal。 In a changing world, one a million miles from the one he was born into, he makes the most of the life he his given。“No one can take away from any man so much as a single moment”。Those moments are what make us who we are。 Regardless of what befalls Eggers, no matter the loss, he is never overwhelmed but rather accepts it with quiet and humble grace。 No job is beneath him。 He is stoic for sure but he constantly adapts to the changes in his world, he doesn’t begrudge the move away from his traditional way of life。 He serves in war, buries any number of people。 Eggers is a survivor whose reserved dignity masks his determination。There a melancholy beauty here and much wisdom。 It calls to mind writers like Wendell Berry who find beauty in sadness, who find dignity in work and power in the small lives of people going about their business。 I’ll finish with a quote:“Sometimes, on mild summer nights, he would spread a blanket somewhere on a freshly mown meadow, lie on his back and look up at the starry sky。 Then he would think about his future, which extended infinitely before him, precisely beacuse he expected nothing of it。 And sometimes, if he lay there long enough, he had the impression that beneath his back the earth was softly rising and falling, and in moments like these he knew that the mountains breathed。”This book is beautifully simple, gently understated, but it aches with beauty and tenderness。I loved this book。 。。。more

A little strange, a little confusing, but very interesting。 Follows the life of Andreas Egger, a man living in rural mountains of Germany。 I had a hard time following the pacing and timing of the story as it jumps around a lot。 At times it seemed to contradict the timings and age of Egger。 It was a quick read though and I really enjoyed the prose style。 Mostly the book left me with a desire to spend some time in wild and free mountains。

A beautiful story about the difficult life of a man in the Austrian AlpsBut even though his life is difficult, Egger has a simple and peaceful way of living it。 He takes things as they come。 I particularly like the way he proposes to Marie。

For a short book this certainly packs a punch。 It's simply the story of a man's life, which to me was a sad, solitary, melancholy one & not without cruelty & heartbreak。 Yet there's never a sense that Egger's is disappointed with his lot, he accepts his life & gets on & makes the best of it。 It's beautifully & eloquently written。 In the opening pages of the book death is described as the Cold Lady: "The Cold Lady comes and takes and goes。 That's all。 She seizes you as she passes and takes you wi For a short book this certainly packs a punch。 It's simply the story of a man's life, which to me was a sad, solitary, melancholy one & not without cruelty & heartbreak。 Yet there's never a sense that Egger's is disappointed with his lot, he accepts his life & gets on & makes the best of it。 It's beautifully & eloquently written。 In the opening pages of the book death is described as the Cold Lady: "The Cold Lady comes and takes and goes。 That's all。 She seizes you as she passes and takes you with her and sticks you in some hole。 And in the last patch of sky you see before they finally shovel the earth in over you she reappears and breathes on you。 And all that's left for you then is darkness。 And the cold。" - made me shiver! 。。。more
