Summary

A powerful story about immigration, trust, and new beginnings, full of heart and humanity, for anyone who has ever felt unwelcome or out of place。 Perfect for fans of Allen Say, Francesca Sanna, and Yuyi Morales。

When a weary stranger arrives one day, with only a suitcase, everyone is full of questions:

Why is he here?
Where has he come from?
And just what is in that suitcase?

To learn the answers, they can either trust the newcomer or discover what they risk by not believing him。

A story about hope and kindness, truth and perception—and most importantly, about how we treat those in need。

"At a time when over 65 million people are forcibly displaced around the world, this beautifully illustrated and wise, gentle tale of tolerance and kindness for fellow humans resonates deeply。 I hope all parents share The Suitcase with their children。" - Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner

"A simple, powerful way to introduce the idea of kindness to strangers to young children" - Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo

My new favorite picture book。 I just think it's a brilliant look at friendship and understanding what's important。 I can't wait to read it to my kindergarten friends。 My new favorite picture book。 I just think it's a brilliant look at friendship and understanding what's important。 I can't wait to read it to my kindergarten friends。 。。。more

Drawn in by the cover, I stopped to read this in the aisle。 A simple but moving story that left me standing teary-eyed, in the aisle。

This is an interesting picture book。 The main character is dragging a suitcase along and meets some animals。 They are curious about what is in the suitcase and he begins telling them。 They don't believe him and the story gets very interesting after that。 I would say it shows some realistic responses and how curiosity can get you into trouble。 It will definitely spark some conversation about the situation and how it was handled。 I think kids need to hear this one。 Great for a read-aloud。 Highly r This is an interesting picture book。 The main character is dragging a suitcase along and meets some animals。 They are curious about what is in the suitcase and he begins telling them。 They don't believe him and the story gets very interesting after that。 I would say it shows some realistic responses and how curiosity can get you into trouble。 It will definitely spark some conversation about the situation and how it was handled。 I think kids need to hear this one。 Great for a read-aloud。 Highly recommended for Grades K-3。 。。。more

Not my favorite story。 I see what the author is getting at - someone different comes and no one knows what to think or do (besides break into the titular suitcase because they didn't BELIEVE that the stranger had what he said he had)。 There's no real reason for the animals to do what they did besides not wanting the stranger to think badly of them。 There's something about kindness here, but overall this didn't hold much appeal for me。 Not my favorite story。 I see what the author is getting at - someone different comes and no one knows what to think or do (besides break into the titular suitcase because they didn't BELIEVE that the stranger had what he said he had)。 There's no real reason for the animals to do what they did besides not wanting the stranger to think badly of them。 There's something about kindness here, but overall this didn't hold much appeal for me。 。。。more

This is an allegory about refugees and how we respond to them。 It will wow you。 A strange creature arrives in the forest with a suitcase。 It has gone through a traumatic journey to get here。 The animals living there are suspicious and don't believe his fantastical story of what's in the suitcase。 When the exhausted animal falls asleep, they break it open, only to discover that a version of the creatures truth is in there。 They discover that it is not that different from them, and go out of their This is an allegory about refugees and how we respond to them。 It will wow you。 A strange creature arrives in the forest with a suitcase。 It has gone through a traumatic journey to get here。 The animals living there are suspicious and don't believe his fantastical story of what's in the suitcase。 When the exhausted animal falls asleep, they break it open, only to discover that a version of the creatures truth is in there。 They discover that it is not that different from them, and go out of their way to fix what what was broken。 This kindness at the end almost made my eyes water。I only wish more adults would read picture books like this。 。。。more

I really like these illustrations and the use of colour, and an interesting play on the white saviour trope。

A moving story about someone who has traveled a long way to another country, and the way the people treat them when they get there and fall asleep。 Good for starting conversations。

One more, please!

Simple yet emotionally endearing story。 Illustrations complimented the text beautifully。

There's something to be said for keeping it simple。 This is a simple message, and it doesn't need to be dressed up with outlandish extras。 I really liked the art。 There's something to be said for keeping it simple。 This is a simple message, and it doesn't need to be dressed up with outlandish extras。 I really liked the art。 。。。more

I now know why I had to wait so long to get this from the library。 It's a special story of someone new and different, showing up and being questioned, someone with a mysterious suitcase that couldn't possibly hold all that he said it held。 There is a problem that caused sadness, even shame but it was fixed, thank goodness, with extra thoughtfulness。 You truly need to see this one and then share it widely! Such a sweet picture book! Love it。

OH。 What a sweet story。 I'd argue it is the story of refugees and the skepticism others feel about the stranger。 There is no way that what they say is true。。。。the others say。 So they have to prove it。 They refuse to believe。 But then the ending。。。。oh I got teary eyed!!!! A story of forgiveness, acceptance, and making new friends。 I encourage this one being read!
