Summary

The final chapter in the Daevabad Trilogy, in which a con-woman and an idealistic djinn prince join forces to save a magical kingdom from a devastating civil war。

Daevabad has fallen。

After a brutal conquest stripped the city of its magic, Nahid leader Banu Manizheh and her resurrected commander, Dara, must try to repair their fraying alliance and stabilize a fractious, warring people。

But the bloodletting and loss of his beloved Nahri have unleashed the worst demons of Dara’s dark past。 To vanquish them, he must face some ugly truths about his history and put himself at the mercy of those he once considered enemies。

Having narrowly escaped their murderous families and Daevabad’s deadly politics, Nahri and Ali, now safe in Cairo, face difficult choices of their own。 While Nahri finds peace in the old rhythms and familiar comforts of her human home, she is haunted by the knowledge that the loved ones she left behind and the people who considered her a savior are at the mercy of a new tyrant。 Ali, too, cannot help but look back, and is determined to return to rescue his city and the family that remains。 Seeking support in his mother’s homeland, he discovers that his connection to the marid goes far deeper than expected and threatens not only his relationship with Nahri, but his very faith。

As peace grows more elusive and old players return, Nahri, Ali, and Dara come to understand that in order to remake the world, they may need to fight those they once loved 。 。 。 and take a stand for those they once hurt。

A trilogy with a good ending??? Wtf???? Omg?!!!!

An excellent end of the seriesA great end to a great series。 I was hoping for happy ends for all my favorite characters, and I got that, but the twisting road to the finish was still exciting。 There are still a few open questions for a follow on series, but this story is complete: the good guys win and the bad guys are almost all defeated。

The Empire of Gold was a satisfying conclusion to the Daevabad trilogy - it tied up the loose ends nicely and I enjoyed reading it。 But similar to how I felt about the first book in the series, I failed to emotionally connect to it and the series as a whole is not a particularly memorable one for me。 It is certainly well-written and has some amazing characters and I can see why people love it the way they do, it's just not one of my favourites。 The Empire of Gold was a satisfying conclusion to the Daevabad trilogy - it tied up the loose ends nicely and I enjoyed reading it。 But similar to how I felt about the first book in the series, I failed to emotionally connect to it and the series as a whole is not a particularly memorable one for me。 It is certainly well-written and has some amazing characters and I can see why people love it the way they do, it's just not one of my favourites。 。。。more

An excellent conclusion to the series。 There were so many good bits and all the plot threads finally got resolved and I am so happy :) Honestly, I think it was the nice chapters dedicated to wrapping everything up towards the end of the book。 Everything just feels fully explored!! I will definitley recommend this series。

I think I said everything in my reviews of the first two books。 More of the same praise for this final book in an incredible series。 Loved every bit of it!

It was a good story, I just hoped for something better for Dara, he didn't deserve anything that happened to him。 I wished for him and nahri to reunited and have something better。 It was a good story, I just hoped for something better for Dara, he didn't deserve anything that happened to him。 I wished for him and nahri to reunited and have something better。 。。。more

my least favorite out of all three, just because the beginning was a little slow。 i like how everything was wrapped up, very satisfying ending

This was perfection, I was laughing while also sobbing my eyes out。

Decent finish, though what with all the parallel plotlines and pov changes it seemed a loooong way to the climax。 Still, the baddest of the baddies got just deserts, and it was clever the way the author turned one of the central romances into a sort of twist on "Frog Prince。" Decent finish, though what with all the parallel plotlines and pov changes it seemed a loooong way to the climax。 Still, the baddest of the baddies got just deserts, and it was clever the way the author turned one of the central romances into a sort of twist on "Frog Prince。" 。。。more

The audiobooks for this trilogy were perfection。 So good。

This was devastatingly magnificent。Not sure how I'll ever read fantasy again without comparing it to this masterpiece。No spoilers, but all the main characters had such fulfilling character arcs and the way Chakraborty kept weaving more and more elements of magic and mythology into the world she created was absolutely beautiful。I cannot say enough good things about this series。 I loved it so so much。 This was devastatingly magnificent。Not sure how I'll ever read fantasy again without comparing it to this masterpiece。No spoilers, but all the main characters had such fulfilling character arcs and the way Chakraborty kept weaving more and more elements of magic and mythology into the world she created was absolutely beautiful。I cannot say enough good things about this series。 I loved it so so much。 。。。more

WOW!! What an ending !! Omg I haven’t felt this way since A Sky Beyond the Storm and We Free the Stars!!! Holy shit this was so good and I need time to process this before I write an actual review。 I’m in awe of how incredible it was。

i have a book hangover from this trilogy and that’s the way it should be 😌

Toimi ihan hyvin äänikirjana! Hieman tiivistystä olisi voinut tehdä, ja eräs juonikuvio oli aika tylsän arvattava ja olisin mieluusti jättänyt sen pois, mutta hyvä sarjan päätös silti!

An epic conclusion to an epic series! In the previous two volumes, things went from bad to worse for the inhabitants of the City of Brass, Daveabad, the capital of the magical civilization of the djinn and their mixed, part-human descendants, the shafit。 Now, real revolution must come to Daevabad, and it is not clear how any of our characters or their civilization itself can survive。 A truly outstanding and epic adventure。 Highly recommended。

Finally finished! IMO this book was WAY too long and could’ve been tightened up a lot。 I really enjoyed the first two but this one dragged on so long I stopped caring。 The vibe I got was that the author didn’t know where it was going and had to ramble on a lot to figure it out; easily half this book could be edited out。 I really just finished this for the final showdown and to see how things played out。 By the time she got around to ending this thing, I did find it to be a moving and fitting con Finally finished! I’m just going to say it, this ending was dull。 Also, vague spoilers ahead! “Not wanting to be destroyed by despair doesn’t make you a coward。 It makes you a survivor。” The Daevabad Trilogy is, overall, both mesmerising and magical。 Ever since the first book I’ve sung its’ praises; gushing about the intricate world and multifaceted conflicts。 But now I’m disappointed, and I want to complain。 Both of the previous books followed a very similar structure: a slow beginning dedicated to set I’m just going to say it, this ending was dull。 Also, vague spoilers ahead! “Not wanting to be destroyed by despair doesn’t make you a coward。 It makes you a survivor。” The Daevabad Trilogy is, overall, both mesmerising and magical。 Ever since the first book I’ve sung its’ praises; gushing about the intricate world and multifaceted conflicts。 But now I’m disappointed, and I want to complain。 Both of the previous books followed a very similar structure: a slow beginning dedicated to set-up with a few intermissions of heightened tension, ending in an explosive finale。 I was hoping The Empire of Gold would deviate from this pattern now that we’re familiar with the world and character。 But no, this one draaaagged… Sure, things technically happened, but nothing seemed to be of much consequence until the last 200 pages。 And even those final events left much to be desired。 It’s honestly baffling that after two books painstakingly setting up layers of politics and religion, it’s all solved by miracles bordering on deus ex machina by the end。 And for a trilogy devoted to exploring the nuances of war, the stakes have never felt lower than in this finale。 There were just no authorial risks taken in this final book。 No moments which made hearts break or emotions war。 Just a lot of time spent telling you there are high stakes and thousands dying。 But don’t worry, everyone we care about – actually anyone we know the name of – will get to the end unscathed。 I’ve seen some argue that the ending for one character was "tragic"。 It was undoubtedly the character arc with the most risk-taking on the author’s part。 However, it was still lackluster to me; erratically jumping between two extremes depending on what the plot needed and when another character needed to seem the better choice。 But by the end they still got the closest thing to a happily ever after as possible, so who cares? It was just all very safe, and that’s not what I want from a high fantasy set during a proposedly bloody and grim civil war。 Which sucks, because the previous two books had taken this trilogy so close to becoming a new favourite。 And then The Empire of Gold fumbled at the finish line。 。。。more

I loved this entire series。 All of the characters, the surprise twists, the djinni folklore。 Chakraborty stole my heart with her amazing tales and she broke it to fix it again。 Each book was brilliant。 I did NOT see this end coming。 I’d read endless stories of Daevabad。

* 4。5/5 starsIt has taken me a long time coming to finish it (mostly due to the dread and fear for the lines of the character) and I'm so happy and satisfied with the ending。 It got me highly emotional。 I would say that I probably would like a bit more backstory and world-building on the other creatures inhabiting the world。 But nevertheless, it was such a great, emotional roller coaster and I'm sad to see it finish。 * 4。5/5 starsIt has taken me a long time coming to finish it (mostly due to the dread and fear for the lines of the character) and I'm so happy and satisfied with the ending。 It got me highly emotional。 I would say that I probably would like a bit more backstory and world-building on the other creatures inhabiting the world。 But nevertheless, it was such a great, emotional roller coaster and I'm sad to see it finish。 。。。more

Took me a few chapters to remember who everyone was, but once back on board I could hardly put the book down。 The chapters toggle among three people point of view and move the story right along。 I enjoyed that all of the characters are flawed but work towards saving the city none the less。 Thought provoking。

This trilogy has it all! Ali, Dara, and Nahri are a perfect circle of main characters that find themselves working to restore the city they love while fighting against varying types of magic。 Friends, enemies, family, learning about their pasts and how they have been used to hurt others, these three unite in the end。 Highly recommend these!

Perfect wrap up to the series。 I cried so hard at the end。 I loved it。
