I preordered this book after I finished reading Woven in Moonlight and we had the author (virtually) join our book club last year :) I’ve never considered myself a YA or fantasy genre fan, which is why I’m so glad my BC has made choices like these which get me out of my “usual” and experiencing something wonderful that I otherwise never would have picked up for myself。 I loved this book, it delivered on every expectation - the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I would have liked to I preordered this book after I finished reading Woven in Moonlight and we had the author (virtually) join our book club last year :) I’ve never considered myself a YA or fantasy genre fan, which is why I’m so glad my BC has made choices like these which get me out of my “usual” and experiencing something wonderful that I otherwise never would have picked up for myself。 I loved this book, it delivered on every expectation - the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I would have liked to have more of Catalina learning how to enhance her gift, but overall a GREAT read! 。。。more

A companion novel that follows the events of book one。 I didn’t like Catalina in the first book and this book solidified my dislike of her。 It didn’t find her likeable in the slightest degree until the very end。 The imagery is not quite as good as the first book, but I can take it in stride。 I wish there had been more development in Paititi with Chaska。

When I say, I love fantasy, this is the kind I mean。 Adventurous, daring, bold, bit scary yet filled with unknown hope。 Firstly, the covers are beautiful and if you notice closely, you will find details from the book in the cover。 The stories get predictable near the endings but it was acceptable。I wish the magic in the stories was properly explained。 The character development was pretty good in the first book but I felt it lacking in the second。 W R I T T E N I N S T A R L I G H T -Sequel to th When I say, I love fantasy, this is the kind I mean。 Adventurous, daring, bold, bit scary yet filled with unknown hope。 Firstly, the covers are beautiful and if you notice closely, you will find details from the book in the cover。 The stories get predictable near the endings but it was acceptable。I wish the magic in the stories was properly explained。 The character development was pretty good in the first book but I felt it lacking in the second。 W R I T T E N I N S T A R L I G H T -Sequel to the first book, it follows Catalina into the jungle she is banished into where she finds Manuel and together they face the mighty jungle in hopes of finding an ally。 But the Illari have another problem at their hands- a blight in the jungle destroying everything。 Catalina might be the solution。 Reasons to read-The book was everything I was hoping it would be。 It was quirky, with plenty of jungle adventure, magic, shape shifting Illari folk, their city of gold, beautiful jungle setting, steamy moments of tension between Catalina and Manuel, some astronomy and lots of history on Goddess Luna。 。。。more

Finally, FINALLY I've finished this book。I wasn't expecting it would take me so much time。 The main reason was that I was reading this book in parallel with others but still, it was pretty boring。I didn't really like Catalina。 She was infuriating most of the time because she couldn't realize that she was wrong and she couldn't be tolerant。 So yes, it was one of the objectives of this book, to make Catalina realize that she needed to understand the Llacsan better, to be more tolerant, and finally Finally, FINALLY I've finished this book。I wasn't expecting it would take me so much time。 The main reason was that I was reading this book in parallel with others but still, it was pretty boring。I didn't really like Catalina。 She was infuriating most of the time because she couldn't realize that she was wrong and she couldn't be tolerant。 So yes, it was one of the objectives of this book, to make Catalina realize that she needed to understand the Llacsan better, to be more tolerant, and finally to give up her powers。 I still wanted to punch her in the face though。Manuel was okay, I guess, but I still couldn't appreciate him as much as Rumi, and most of all, I didn't really care for his love story with Catalina。 "I love you but our love is impossible, but I love you, but I can't"。。。 Too long, too repetitive, and not the same chemistry as Rumi and Ximena (yeah I love them and I won't stop comparing them to Manuel and Catalina)The plot was interesting but took too much time to take off。 Half of the book is spent in the jungle with just Manuel and Catalina trying to survive。 As soon as they arrive in Paititi, the plot was interesting。 However, this book suffered the same problem as the first one: the plot was solved in barely 20 pages。 In the first book, at least, we had political intrigue, enemies to lovers trope, and dilemma but here the story takes time to be developed and everything is solved in 20 pages。 I don't get it。An interesting thing was Catalina seer's powers。 I liked that at Paititi, she discovers that the 3 gods are necessary。 It helped Catalina realize that the Llacsan aren't so different in the end。 Ximena realized it through politics and people, Catalina through magic and religion。 It was cool。So to conclude, this book was okay, it was distracting but I was disappointed。 I think it would have been truly good as a novella and not an entire book of 400 pages。 That was way too long。 。。。more

I loved this book so much! Ibañez’s writing is so good, I really felt like I was walking through the jungle with Catalina and Manuel。 Perfect balance of adventure, magic, and romance。 Can’t wait to read more of this series。

I enjoyed this book, somehow, but as far sequels go, it wasn’t great。 Firstly, it was a little too damsel-in-distressy for me。 I’m all for a helpless princess who learns how to fend for herself and comes into her own strength, but I can do without her needing a man to point out all of her weaknesses。 Where the romance of the first book seemed accidental and contentious, this one seemed convenient and misguided。 Where the heroine of the first book is forced to make tough choices for her love, her I enjoyed this book, somehow, but as far sequels go, it wasn’t great。 Firstly, it was a little too damsel-in-distressy for me。 I’m all for a helpless princess who learns how to fend for herself and comes into her own strength, but I can do without her needing a man to point out all of her weaknesses。 Where the romance of the first book seemed accidental and contentious, this one seemed convenient and misguided。 Where the heroine of the first book is forced to make tough choices for her love, her country, and her best friend, the heroine of the sequel is mostly just wanting to not be alone- which is probably relatable, but is grosser。 There were some things in this sequel that added to the bigger picture, but the magic that was “woven” throughout the first book was entirely missing until the last 1/3 of this one。 Also it seems a little condescending that the author seems to think that we don’t know who the enemy is the whole time, even though it’s pointed out pretty clearly in the first book。 Overall, no surprises, no sense of wonder, but like okay-ish storyline that sometimes saves itself from being completely terrible。 。。。more

3。8This book picks up on where Woven in Moonlight left off- Catalina beginning her banishment in the jungle, led far from her home and her dreams of taking back the throne。While this is marketed as a companion novel that can be read as a stand alone, I definitely think you need to read the first book to really enjoy this one to the fullest, and get where Catalina is coming from。We didn't get a lot of Catalina in WiM, not up close and personal, and definitely not any glimpse into her brain。 I had 3。8This book picks up on where Woven in Moonlight left off- Catalina beginning her banishment in the jungle, led far from her home and her dreams of taking back the throne。While this is marketed as a companion novel that can be read as a stand alone, I definitely think you need to read the first book to really enjoy this one to the fullest, and get where Catalina is coming from。We didn't get a lot of Catalina in WiM, not up close and personal, and definitely not any glimpse into her brain。 I had a lot of fun getting to know her, like having a real conversation with someone you've only heard about from a mutual friend。 Catalina is just as stubborn as she was in the first book, consistently determined, and in equal parts infuriating and sort of impossible not to respect。I love the adventure vibes of this book。 Left in the jungle to figure out her survival alone, and then inspired to seek out a city of gold that may be no more than a legend, her only companion the boy she once loved who now has raised an indestructible wall between them? Fascinating。 From watching Catalina cluelessly fall into danger with the most innocuous looking parts of the jungle to being actively hunted down by the people of the jungle, there is so much tension and adrenaline in this story! The other great thing about this story is the world exploration。 In an unknown part of the world we've already seen, with people far removed from the politics both stories are deeply entrenched in, you get to see so much more of the land。 There are also "facts" from the first book that get disproven or turned on their heads thanks to a new perspective。All of which gives Catalina some new perspectives to deal with at well。 As I said, Catalina is just as stubborn as she was before, and while it's infuriating to watch her get things so wrong, misunderstanding a situation you already know the truth of, it's so nice to see her start to untangle that knot herself。 It's slow going, yes, but satisfying all the same。I also just love the cover so much。 It's so bright and jam packed it almost looks like it should belong to a younger book, but at the same time it definitely tells you exactly what you're coming into and somehow perfectly matches the vibe of the story。 I spent so long looking at the little details and matching them to dangers within。The second half of the book did slow down, and I lost some of my interest once the jungle dangers weren't on the forefront。 Part of that is also because the romance took more of the spotlight as the book went on, and I just didn't buy it。 While I like the idea of Manuel and who he is/was to Catalina, their romance never felt organic and I couldn't make myself care about, so the "will they or won't they" back and forth drug on into exhaustion。I also dislikes the reveal at the end, and thought it was kind of flat。 Partially because it's so tied to the first book while so much of this one was self contained, but also because it didn't feel completely earned。This book is a lot of fun and a nice departure from Woven in Moonlight in a lot of ways。 It's nice to revisit some of those characters, and the world, of the first book while also going somewhere completely new。 。。。more

I love Isabel's writing style, and even though this was very different than Woven in Moonlight, I really loved the story line。 Action, lots of adventure, romance, magic, and mystery。 If you were a fan of WIM, you're going to be a fan of the characters Isabel created in this epic tale of finding ones place and purpose in the Jungle。 Isabel did a great job writing deep, relatable, and genuine characters。 The story starts off a little slow, but hang on because it's worth the wait。 I love Isabel's writing style, and even though this was very different than Woven in Moonlight, I really loved the story line。 Action, lots of adventure, romance, magic, and mystery。 If you were a fan of WIM, you're going to be a fan of the characters Isabel created in this epic tale of finding ones place and purpose in the Jungle。 Isabel did a great job writing deep, relatable, and genuine characters。 The story starts off a little slow, but hang on because it's worth the wait。 。。。more

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book very much, which surprised me as I liked the setting and the magic。 The pacing felt too slow in the beginning and then too fast at the end。 The characters didn’t have much depth and the romance felt almost non-existent。 I expected to like this book, but unfortunately just didn’t。

I am so in love with these novels and WIS was a FANTASTIC sequel to WIM。 I loved being back in this world and grew to love Catalina。 When I started the book I hated her (haha) but she became who she was meant to be and watching that unfold was amazing 🌙 Don’t even get me started on Manuel (Rumi 2。0) 🥰😍🤩I do think that you need to read the first book to fully enjoy this one but it could be read as a stand alone novel。 Please tell me there will be more to come 😭

Rarely have I encountered a protagonist with such a believable and poignant growth arc。 Catalina developed from downright annoying and selfish to a wise and humble leader, who knew when to step aside。 Aside from some pacing sections and literal Deus ex Machina at the end, I greatly enjoyed this one。

I was expecting more of Ximena and Rumi, but this is great too。 The writing is more solid than the first book。 No "plot twist" that was easy to guess from the start。 Also loved the cover。I guess I shouldn't comment on the criticism of the portrayal of Indigenous people because I'm not one or even a descendant of one。 I just thought the whole point the author was trying to relay was how Catalina didn't even realize she was a colonizer with a superiority complex, but in the end she willingly chose I was expecting more of Ximena and Rumi, but this is great too。 The writing is more solid than the first book。 No "plot twist" that was easy to guess from the start。 Also loved the cover。I guess I shouldn't comment on the criticism of the portrayal of Indigenous people because I'm not one or even a descendant of one。 I just thought the whole point the author was trying to relay was how Catalina didn't even realize she was a colonizer with a superiority complex, but in the end she willingly chose to live in a place she would've considered to be beneath her at the start of the book (i。e。, progress)。 Although, I will admit I was surprised by the Indigenous king's response while she was goading him that he simply had moved on after the other colonizer(s) drove his people to this hidden place a thousand years earlier。 This is one of those things where a writer has to diverge from the real world I guess, especially because the story technically still takes place "a long time ago" and modern-day capitalism and neoliberalism haven't been presumed to be the norm。 。。。more

2。5 starsI did not like this one nearly as much as the first book。 A large part of that is because I actually liked Ximena, but Catalina drives me up the fucking walls。 She is a HUGE hypocrite, not to mention extremely entitled。 Going into the book, you know she's gone through rough times, and of course it's hard for her to be banished to the deadly jungle, but frankly, she didn't HAVE to be banished。 She very well could have stayed if she just accepted someone else as queen。 She stringently ins 2。5 starsI did not like this one nearly as much as the first book。 A large part of that is because I actually liked Ximena, but Catalina drives me up the fucking walls。 She is a HUGE hypocrite, not to mention extremely entitled。 Going into the book, you know she's gone through rough times, and of course it's hard for her to be banished to the deadly jungle, but frankly, she didn't HAVE to be banished。 She very well could have stayed if she just accepted someone else as queen。 She stringently insists that she doesn't trust a Llacsan on the throne (that she whines is hers even though her ancestors also stole it from someone else) and that her people need someone to properly care for them, while simultaneously ignoring all evidence that said Llacsan queen is willing to do this too。 She's so butt hurt by the idea that she won't be queen, she won't even listen to her best friend, and constantly refers to Ximena as a traitor who betrayed her for the enemy。 Now, I'm all for character growth, but it's a lot easier to swallow when the character actually shows that they have common decency somewhere inside them。 Catalina is, again, entitled and petulant for the vast majority of the book。 Also kind of racist to the indigenous people of the jungle, even getting offended by the fact that they were blessed with gifts from Luna when that's supposed to be "just for Catalina's people" because they're supposed to be the special ones。 The only respect I ever really had for Catalina was whenever she would mention not pushing past Manuel's boundaries because she had to respect his feelings about their relationship。 Although she wasn't very good at that either to be honest。 It takes her 232 pages to acknowledge that her people have treated others wrong and that she's been so wrapped up in her own hurts that she's never considered anyone else's, which gave me one shining ray of hope that was brutally murdered two pages later when she proceeded to take her enlightened moment to consider how she would use it to take an army and overthrow the Llacsan queen。 Way to go Catalina, you learned nothing apparently。 She finally, FINALLY gets her head out of her ass by the end of the book, but dear lord。 This was definitely more character driven than plot driven, which is fine, but uh, it would have been a lot better if said character was actually compelling to read about。 As it is, it mostly just feels like the Catalina self pity parade。 。。。more
