Summary

Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries series is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit。

When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr。 Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates。

Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own。 But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed。

As we do on the podcast, I will frame this review like a compliment sandwich: the buns are things I liked and the meat are things that I didn’t care for as much。 Top Bun:I want to congratulate Tirzah Price on keeping the personalities of each character true to the original material。 While the general societal norms presented in this book may not be quite accurate historically, I didn’t find myself taken out of the story。 I found the headstrong and brave Lizzy to be absolutely charming。 By having her family reside in Cheapside from a barely middle class family put an interesting spin on the narrative。 Additionally, Bingley’s family is nouveau riche, making their money from mercantile, which would have lowered their standing in the tonne。 The only character that is true to their original counterpart is Darcy, and even then, he’s not just a wealthy landowner; his father owns a successful barrister’s office to which he is a solicitor。 Darcy makes a point to indicate that he worked his way up from errand boy to solicitor without any assistance from his father。I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions between Darcy and Lizzy。 The reader gleans some stirrings of interest on both sides very early。 We are treated to two full on embraces - unlike the original that left us all salivating over the 1995 and 2005 film versions to see some actual liplocking。 What we don’t see is any interaction between Bingley and Jane until the very end, and unfortunately, it’s a bit of an afterthought。 The Meat:Okay, with the overall “whodunnit” I wasn’t completely sold on the actual resolution。 Some of the turns that the characters make I felt to be inconsistent with their portrayal in the original text。 While this isn’t necessarily a negative aspect to the book, I feel if you are very familiar with the text, you might find these changes a bit challenging to overlook。 Additionally, I wasn’t completely sold on the motive of the murderer and the conclusion of the case。 Also, I needed more Darcy and Lizzy interaction; especially following the original storyline。Bottom Bun:I’m so happy to learn that this is a first of a series。 I can’t wait to delve into further adventures of Jane Austen heroines solving mysteries。 I enjoyed the interactions between characters, especially those within the Bennett family。 Mrs。 Bennett actually plays an important role in capturing the real murderer, and I thought it was quite an unexpected turn for the character。 Lastly, the one final exchange between Darcy and Lizzy was so reminiscent of the 2005 P&P that after finishing the novel, I was enticed to throw on the DVD and soak it all in again。 I would highly recommend this book; especially if you have teenage daughter that have already been introduced to the original Austen text。 As there are a number of harrowing scenes and character deaths, I would not recommend for ages under 12。 For more reviews and link to our bi-weekly romance review podcast: Chick Lit Book Club Podcast 。。。more

(3。5/5) This was a fun take on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice。 Lizzie Bennett works in her father's law office and decides she wants to represent Mr。 Bingley who has been wrongfully accused of murdering his brother-in-law。 Against her father's wishes, she does her own investigation of the case discovering clues and discovering Mr。 Darcy。 While the story is completely different from the original story (other than Mrs。 Bennett wanting Lizzie to marry Mr。 Collins), it was quite entertaining。 Tha (3。5/5) This was a fun take on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice。 Lizzie Bennett works in her father's law office and decides she wants to represent Mr。 Bingley who has been wrongfully accused of murdering his brother-in-law。 Against her father's wishes, she does her own investigation of the case discovering clues and discovering Mr。 Darcy。 While the story is completely different from the original story (other than Mrs。 Bennett wanting Lizzie to marry Mr。 Collins), it was quite entertaining。 Thank you to Harper Audio and NetGalley for the review copy。 。。。more

This was an enjoyable enough read。 It's a Jane Austen retelling with murder mystery twist。 I liked Lizzie and the dynamics she shared with her family。 The back and forth banter between her and Mr Darcy was really nice。 Lizzie is really spirited and headstrong, diving right into the center of the mystery when repeatedly told to stay away。 The whole story was kind of Ok for me。 I didn't hate it but I also didn't love it。I had the major issue with the plot。 It wasn't engaging enough。 It hardly made This was an enjoyable enough read。 It's a Jane Austen retelling with murder mystery twist。 I liked Lizzie and the dynamics she shared with her family。 The back and forth banter between her and Mr Darcy was really nice。 Lizzie is really spirited and headstrong, diving right into the center of the mystery when repeatedly told to stay away。 The whole story was kind of Ok for me。 I didn't hate it but I also didn't love it。I had the major issue with the plot。 It wasn't engaging enough。 It hardly made me care and the resolution seemed very convenient。 The whole thing felt so detached and it was just not convincing。 I had an inkling who the bad guy will be because it was so blatantly obvious, that I really hoped I was wrong。With these kind of books I am fine with a weaker mystery plot, if the subplots and characters come out strong。 I loved Stalking Jack the Ripper even when I had guessed the murderer within first few pages because Audrey and Creswell made a formidable pair and are memorable till date。 I was hoping something in line with that with this one but sadly didn't find any。 I wished there was more of Lizzie and Darcy interaction and brainstorming。 That would have made me really interested。Overall an enjoyable read and a quick read。 。。。more

Though I will say that this is a *very* loose retelling so if you're going into this (somehow) expecting a strict retelling of Austen's work, this might not be for you—but I would definitely urge giving it a try because it was so entertaining!I enjoyed Price's writing and I was particularly pleased with the clever ways she'd insert Austen's famously recognisable lines from the original into this retelling。 I admit that every time I came across a familiar passage, I'd happily sigh in appreciation of how it was so naturally inserted in the text, even if the context was different! I also liked how the author took the original cast of characters and gave them new roles while staying quite true to their original characterisations。 This does mean that there wasn't a whole lot of new character development but it was still a comfort to see the characters that I love come to life in these more 'modern' roles。 The new setting was also refreshing—the legal practices, the London location, the bow street runners—all of these more or less familiar details of the period really made the story come to life for me。 The author does note (at the end) how she took some liberties with the historical setting but I didn't think there were such glaring inaccuracies that make it unbelievable or unenjoyable (that said, I'm not overly familiar with this period so take that as you will)。The murder mystery aspect was fun to unravel and although I was able to figure out whodunwhat before it was revealed, it was still great to see my theories play out! The author kept the story moving at a fast pace with lots of action, and twists and turns。 To my delight, Wickham and Mr Collins had much more sinister roles to play and it was so satisfying to see how their comeuppance played out—*so satisfying*! I do wish we got to see more of Charlotte and Jane but most of the supporting cast in the original were also the same here。 As always, I loved Lizzie and Darcy—I will never not love these two and I thought that Price kept them very true to the original。 Lizzie is so smart, headstrong and fiercely determined to put herself in an environment that's traditionally male dominated。 I loved how she challenged the gender norms and although I found Mr Bennett to be a bit more severe/reserved in this telling, I loved how he supported his favourite daughter。 Darcy was as sneakily charming as ever 😍 Reading this did make me realise just how little time Darcy and Lizzie spend together before feelings turn to love yet I still couldn't help but swoon at the romance—that said, the romance plays quite a small role in this retelling but I didn't mind that at all。Overall, a super entertaining retelling of one of my all-time favourite novels。 I didn't really know what to expect when I went into this (because I mean, I really had no idea how Pride and Prejudice + murder would work out) but I'm glad to say that it didn't disappoint me! I'd so love if Lizzie and Darcy got some kind of murder mystery series out of this because I would definitely read it 😂 I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what else this author writes in the future! 。。。more

I love retellings and this one added in a mystery that our favorite heroine, Elizabeth Bennett has to solve。 But her reason for wanting to solve the murder。。。 perfect。 She wanted to become a lawyer, and had to work extra hard to prove herself as a woman。 The beginning was a little slow and it took me about 3 chapters to really get into, but those early chapters were painful for me, I don’t know if I was thrown off by the concept or what。 Once I got into it though, it was a page turner。 I feel li I love retellings and this one added in a mystery that our favorite heroine, Elizabeth Bennett has to solve。 But her reason for wanting to solve the murder。。。 perfect。 She wanted to become a lawyer, and had to work extra hard to prove herself as a woman。 The beginning was a little slow and it took me about 3 chapters to really get into, but those early chapters were painful for me, I don’t know if I was thrown off by the concept or what。 Once I got into it though, it was a page turner。 I feel like the characters were kept true to the original, so their roles in the murder mystery were believable。 While this wasn’t my favorite Pride and Prejudice retelling, it is definitely worth a read if you like the original and mysteries。 。。。more

Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite books and is the ultimate enemies-to-lovers story。Pride & Premeditation takes that beloved story and dials it to 11 with all the things you wish could have happened in the original story。- Smart, logical Elizabeth (Lizzie) finally applying her knowledge to an occupation ☑️- A high speed carriage chase followed by a standoff where Darcy really gets to be the hero ☑️- Three villians we love to hate and that finally succumb to true justice ☑️- A Legally Blond Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite books and is the ultimate enemies-to-lovers story。Pride & Premeditation takes that beloved story and dials it to 11 with all the things you wish could have happened in the original story。- Smart, logical Elizabeth (Lizzie) finally applying her knowledge to an occupation ☑️- A high speed carriage chase followed by a standoff where Darcy really gets to be the hero ☑️- Three villians we love to hate and that finally succumb to true justice ☑️- A Legally Blonde-esque ending with Lizzie being a badass in court ☑️- A unique "proposal" ☑️This was such a fun retelling of Pride & Prejudice。 I found myself saying multiple times "Yes, Lizzie, yes!!" She's figuring out this case on her own and Darcy helps but doesn't overtake。 I also found myself thinking that this book really let's you finally get justice for the characters you despise in the original story (*cough*Collins*cough*)。 So multiple times I also may have shouted "JUSTICE" and gotten weird looks from the dog。 🤷🏼‍♀️I listened to this one on audio and since it wasn't the final audio version it was just one voice with one inflection so it was hard sometimes to tell the difference in characters but I'm sure the final version will be fantastic。 Somehow I found myself missing a whiny voiced Mrs。 Bennett。 So weird to hear her with a nice voice。 😐If you're looking for a fun retelling of a classic story pick this one up! I'm into it and this was actually really fun and I enjoyed it so much! Pride and Premeditation follows Lizzie Bennet, the daughter of a barrister, trying to prove her worth as a lawyer in London's high society。 When she finds out a prominent gentleman, Bingley, is charged with murdering his brother-in-law, Lizzie sees this as her chance to show her father, and society, that she is capable of studying law and being in the courtroom。 Lizzie just knows Bingley did not commit this murder but his hired solicitor Darcy won't let her help。 Lizzie must prove and attempt to solve the case without the help of her father and without running into Darcy。Overall? Loved it! It was such a fun read and take on the classic Jane Austen novel。 Fully open, I haven't read the actual classic (I know I'm sorry, hopefully soon) so I can't personally speak on how much the characters stick to the actual storyline of the original, but I think this was really great at staying within the world that Austen created without it being too constricted。 Price uses the backdrops and characters of Austen's work to create their own story and plot without it feeling like the original isn't there at all。 While some things have changed, I think that it fits the narrative quite well and works for this novel。I really liked Lizzie and Darcy and it was great to see their bickering (which eventually may turn into something more)。 Lizzie is a very strong and independent woman going against the society she was raised in and we see the negative and positive outcomes from this。 Throughout most of the book, Darcy isn't seen too much but his and Lizzie's opinions of each other change throughout the novel and it is very clear to see this happening and it is done well。 I really wish we got to see more of Darcy and a bit more of the romance, which is more implied rather than shown, because I did really enjoy what there was。I really enjoyed Price's writing as well。 It is very clear they know the original novel quite well and took this to create their own story。 It all flowed well and was a fun read with emotional and humourous scenes sprinkled in。 The murder itself had a lot of complexities to it but it was written well enough that I was not confused and was able to follow it along。 I personally did not see who the murderer was, until Lizzie figured it out as well, so I think that is always important in a mystery novel for me。Overall, really enjoyed it! I don't really have anything bad to say about it other than I wish Darcy was involved a little more and maybe a bit longer (because I really loved it lol)。 I CAN'T wait for the next novels! 。。。more

Price did a great job of keeping these characters true to their original selves while adding her own twist to keep these characters moving in a murder-mystery plot。 Specifically, I wanted to point out how great she did with Wickham。 We know Wickham is a scum bag going in and oftentimes, he feels like a player in adaptions of the Austen's P&P, but he felt a little different here。 Normally, I can't figure out why Elizabeth is so intelligent throughout the book, but so dumb when it comes to Wickham。 In this book, I think Price did a good job of making Wickham more appealing。 Of making him seem more like a nice and progressive and genuinely good guy when no one else is。 I loved that! This feminist retelling of Pride and Prejudice (+ murder) is the book you've been missing from your library。 I couldn't put it down once I started it and chances are you won't be able to either。 This is a must-read for everyone!Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and reviewed a gifted and advanced copy of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。Blog • Instagram • Twitter 。。。more

While some liberties will taken regarding the historical setting, I think this is such a fun way to access a a classic set centuries ago! I also loved that several lines are used directly from the original text!Genre: Historical Fiction/Retelling/MysteryRecommend for: Fans of Pride and Prejudice (obviously), YA Murder Mysteries, cozy mysteries, or historical mysteriesReminds me of: In the Hall with the Knife meets Pride and Prejudice (obviously)。 Or more PG, teen version of the Stephanie Plum Series (Book 1: One for the Money)!Verdict: Gets a stared review from me! I received this and as an audio galley to listen to for free in exchange for my honest review。 Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for giving me access。This has to be my favorite Pride and Prejudice retelling ever! I love me a good mystery, let alone one set in this time period。 While we have all out typical P&P characters, their storyline is a bit different, but you still know how they relate to the original。 Price did an amazing job at capturing Austen's voice in these characters and creat I received this and as an audio galley to listen to for free in exchange for my honest review。 Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for giving me access。This has to be my favorite Pride and Prejudice retelling ever! Pride and Prejudice plus cozy mystery! Yes, please! This reimagining of Austen's classic story takes the characters in very different directions while still being the characters we know and love (and hate in some cases)。 The mystery had many layers, and I would have liked it even if they were completely new characters。 Elizabeth wants to become a barrister and present cases in court, and she tries her hardest to solve a case in order to convince her father to take her on as an official employee。 Pride and Prejudice plus cozy mystery! A delightful combination of an Agatha Christie mystery with Jane Austen characters and setting。 Elizabeth Bennet is determined to solve a mystery to acquit Mr。 Bingley and at the same time convince her father that she is a worthy addition to his law firm。 The Bennet family is intact as in Austen's novel, but living in Cheapside。 In fact, the entire P&P cast is in a parallel timeline where they are all city dwellers。 The mystery was very well done and I enjoyed spending time with some of my favor A delightful combination of an Agatha Christie mystery with Jane Austen characters and setting。 Elizabeth Bennet is determined to solve a mystery to acquit Mr。 Bingley and at the same time convince her father that she is a worthy addition to his law firm。 The Bennet family is intact as in Austen's novel, but living in Cheapside。 In fact, the entire P&P cast is in a parallel timeline where they are all city dwellers。 The mystery was very well done and I enjoyed spending time with some of my favorite P&P characters。 This could be recommended to preteen mystery buffs as there is no objectionable language or sexual content。Thank you to HarperTeen and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
