Summary

One of the world's most influential economists sets out the basis for a new social contract fit for the 21st century

'In the tradition of Beveridge, Shafik points us toward 。。。 a hopeful framework for social, economic, and political renewal' Michael J。 Sandel

'A powerful and persuasive moral argument 。。。 rigorous and specific enough to help readers think practically about the policies needed' Melinda Gates

---

The social contract shapes everything: our political institutions, legal systems and material conditions, but also the organisation of family and community, our well-being, relationships and life prospects。 And yet everywhere, the social contract is failing。

Accelerating changes in technology, demography and climate will reshape our world in ways many of us have yet to grasp。 In this landmark study, Minouche Shafik, Director of the London School of Economics, draws on evidence from across the globe to identify the key principles every society must adopt if it is to meet the challenges of the coming century, with profound implications for gender equality, education, healthcare provision, the role of business and the future of work。

How should society pool risks, share resources and balance individual with collective responsibility? Brilliantly lucid and accessible, What We Owe Each Other offers new answers to these age-old questions and equips every reader to understand and play their part in the urgent and necessary transformation ahead。

---

'A necessary contribution at a turning-point in history 。。。 a must-read' Ursula von der Leyen

'Beautifully argued 。。。 a must-read for all those seeking to understand why the bonds that bind society together are so frayed and what we can do about it' Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

'Weaves economics, philosophy, wisdom and common sense into a social contract of simplicity, solidity and harmony。 A must-read recipe for the improvement of our life together' Christine Lagarde

'A thought-provoking addition to our current, urgent debates' Daron Acemoglu

This book, especially the last couple of chapters, made me sob my heart out and gave me the biggest book hangover in my entire life。 I love Bryce with all my heart, and her development and strength are so inspiring。 Honestly can't wait for the rest of the series to come out。 This book, especially the last couple of chapters, made me sob my heart out and gave me the biggest book hangover in my entire life。 I love Bryce with all my heart, and her development and strength are so inspiring。 Honestly can't wait for the rest of the series to come out。 。。。more

Be still my heart and every emotion that I felt while reading this masterpiece。I don’t think I can put into words how much I loved every single thing about this book! Did I just binge the last 300 pages in a few hours because I couldn’t for the life of me put it down? Yes。 Am I still crying? Hell yes。 This was a wild ride from start to finish, and I’m going to need at least 3-5 days to recover。

I didn't know what to expect from this book but I definitely know that I didn't expect to cry so much in the end! This is not a spoiler I promise。 But despite being filled with a lot of information to wrap your head around in the first half of the book, it's an amazing build up to the second part of it that will keep at the edge of your seat。 Absolutely enjoyed this one🙌 I didn't know what to expect from this book but I definitely know that I didn't expect to cry so much in the end! I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH。 I have had this book sitting on my shelf since it was first released and I put off reading it for the longest time because of the negative reviews。 I regret doing that!!! SJM does it again! I love the dynamic between Bryce and Hunt so much。 Its so adorable。 I need the next book NOW

I liked this。 Why did I like this so much? It's not really THAT good, there were so many eyerolling moments。 Maybe cause I'm a total noob when it comes to SJM's books, so all this is new and exciting to me (because, apparently, it is very much like her other books but with swearing and dirty thoughts)。 Anyhow, it was very confusing at the beginning。 I almost dnfed it during the first 150 pages。 I had no idea who is who, who is what, what is going on。。。 Too much info-dumping in a not very coheren I liked this。 Why did I like this so much? Maas is one of my favorite authors。 This was definitely not my favorite book of hers。 I felt like there was a lot of telling, not showing in this book, and it affected the flow of the novel。 I did not particularly like the main character, which really affected my desire to read this book。 It took me over a month and 3 false starts。 The first 2/3 was hard to get through, the love story was the only part that kept me going。 I will continue to read this series, bc one thing Maas has shown me is tha Maas is one of my favorite authors。 This was definitely not my favorite book of hers。 I felt like there was a lot of telling, not showing in this book, and it affected the flow of the novel。 I did not particularly like the main character, which really affected my desire to read this book。 It took me over a month and 3 false starts。 The first 2/3 was hard to get through, the love story was the only part that kept me going。 I will continue to read this series, bc one thing Maas has shown me is that her first books are always just scratching the surface of her world building and well rounded characters。 。。。more

3。5, I agree with everyone else, took a while to get going。 literally took me months to read。 I started this in November。 But still enjoyable。 a little tricky to get around the law and whole world set up ect。 did find the whole relaionship a little unbelivable and tropey, but what the hell。

It has been a very, very long time since I found a book that grabs you by the throat and drags you into its world, refusing to let you leave。 This book did that and more。 I laughed, I cried and I was completely and utterly invested。 All I can say is : WOW。 Friggin' awesome。 It has been a very, very long time since I found a book that grabs you by the throat and drags you into its world, refusing to let you leave。 This book did that and more。 I laughed, I cried and I was completely and utterly invested。 All I can say is : WOW。 Friggin' awesome。 。。。more

Congrats to the first book since I was a child to make me cry。 That one tiny part on that one page near the end。 Yo, wtf! The tears just came out。This was such a great read。 I'll admit that at the beginning it was hard for me to follow with the world building and info dumping but once everything was set in motion it was hard for me to put down。 Bryce is such a cool and interesting character。 I love her。 The grief and trauma she went through! Ugh, I was shook。 Sarah did a great job with writing that because that shit hurt。 Ugh, I love Hunt。 It's a slow burn, folks。 But I think it's worth it。Do I still have to google some shit? Yes。 There's still some things I'm a bit confused about。 Maybe it's my brain being new to fantasy books。 Huge fucking fantasy books。 Or maybe it really was just TOO much but the positive outweighs the negative here。 It's still a 5 star book。 There's a wiki page for this series so let me fill in some holes。This was my first Sarah J。 Maas book and perhaps I should've started with her older books first because I'm assuming her previous works won't be as good as this。 I’ve read/watched some reviews saying there’s some similarities with her other book and it’s typical of her but since this is my first from her。。。it’s all newwww to meeeee so I liked it a lot。 。。。more

This book made me laugh out loud, made me think I was guessing the plot line just to be hideously wrong, sob (and I’m talking multiple times), absolutely RAGE, and immediately form attachments to the characters。 So, you know, classic SJM。 10/10 recommend, I’m picking it up to read again, no regrets。

I didn't know I hated info dumps until I read about 18 pages of this book。 Seriously。 SJM dumps SO MUCH onto you, it gets real overwhelming and boring real fast。 The characters are trying to be edgy (??) in a way that 14-year-olds think they are edgy。 They're not。 they're just cringy。 I tried to read past chapter 3 four times because I really wanted to like this book。 But I just can't。 I tried audiobook even。 Just too many info dumps。 I didn't know I hated info dumps until I read about 18 pages of this book。 Seriously。 SJM dumps SO MUCH onto you, it gets real overwhelming and boring real fast。 The characters are trying to be edgy (??) in a way that 14-year-olds think they are edgy。 They're not。 they're just cringy。 I tried to read past chapter 3 four times because I really wanted to like this book。 But I just can't。 I tried audiobook even。 Just too many info dumps。 。。。more

The best book I read in March。 I slowly fell in love with Maas's wiring style and her characters。 Felt like watching Bryce's journey was well earned and developed。 Some of the most real conversations I've read in a while with friends, family, and the community at large。 Although the beginning was slower to me about 200 pages in I really started to struggle to put the book down。 I laughed, I cried and I had a fun time getting to know this world and the being that live here。 A great start to a new The best book I read in March。 I slowly fell in love with Maas's wiring style and her characters。 Felt like watching Bryce's journey was well earned and developed。 Some of the most real conversations I've read in a while with friends, family, and the community at large。 Although the beginning was slower to me about 200 pages in I really started to struggle to put the book down。 I laughed, I cried and I had a fun time getting to know this world and the being that live here。 A great start to a new series and I can't wait to see where it leads next。 。。。more

Way too many details。 It´s great that the author has such a complicated world to draw from, but we don't need all the details。It was good。 I ws driven to read to the end。 And I half‐cried multiple times in the last half。 And maybe I will read the next in the series, but it could have been better。 Way too many details。 It´s great that the author has such a complicated world to draw from, but we don't need all the details。It was good。 I ws driven to read to the end。 And I half‐cried multiple times in the last half。 And maybe I will read the next in the series, but it could have been better。 。。。more

Fairly terrible writing style, unnecessary obsession with body image (countless mentions of Bryce’s spectacular ass and various male’s perfect muscles made it tiresomely like a bad romance novel), and about 400 pages too long。 It seemed like a mash up of the shows Castle and Angel。 The only saving grace was the plot got much better around 3/4 of the way through, but better editing would have made it a good book。 Instead it was average。

I just finished this book minutes ago and probably should wait a beat before reviewing but whatever。 It started off slow—like a solid 3/5—but by the end I was crying and racing to the finish, so I’m averaging it at like a 3。5/4。 I was caught off guard by the modernity of this book, it at times read more like a detective/murder mystery novel than a fantasy novel and the magical elements often faded into the background。 It was more a story of friendship and redemption than romance and even though I just finished this book minutes ago and probably should wait a beat before reviewing but whatever。 It started off slow—like a solid 3/5—but by the end I was crying and racing to the finish, so I’m averaging it at like a 3。5/4。 I was caught off guard by the modernity of this book, it at times read more like a detective/murder mystery novel than a fantasy novel and the magical elements often faded into the background。 It was more a story of friendship and redemption than romance and even though it wasn’t what I was expecting I did end up really enjoying it and I’m obviously already impatient about what we’ll get in the next book!!! 。。。more

I have very confused feelings about this book。 I did enjoy it though, but not as much as some of her other books。 I wasn’t particularly invested with Hunt, his character kinda disappointed me honestly, I expected more because of all the fans losing their shit over him。 He was okay, I guess, and some of the moments were really cute。 My biggest problem with the story was so amount of info dump and how predictable her stories have become。 Bryce was a character who didn’t have powers and, in my opin I have very confused feelings about this book。 I did enjoy it though, but not as much as some of her other books。 I wasn’t particularly invested with Hunt, his character kinda disappointed me honestly, I expected more because of all the fans losing their shit over him。 He was okay, I guess, and some of the moments were really cute。 My biggest problem with the story was so amount of info dump and how predictable her stories have become。 Bryce was a character who didn’t have powers and, in my opinion, the book would be worlds better if she had stayed that way。 It would, at least, be more compelling。 But, instead, like every other book that she has suddenly the MC gets a shit ton of power out of their ass and now guess who’s really fucking powerful。 Her world building was so convoluted im not quite sure i even understand it, 800 pages and all。 There was absolutely NO NEED for her to give so many details on unnecessary times。 Also, every single important information was given by some other character to Bryce, so by the end everything the reader finds out is just a huge monologue from someone, and that’s just lazy。 Even though, I should’ve expected it considering A Court of Silver and Flames was the same。 Even with all of this, and some other points im too lazy to make, i did enjoy the story and couldn’t put the book down Which makes me a forever Maas bitch and i am proud 。。。more
