Summary

Listened to the audiobook。 I definitely liked the first book better, but I still had a good time listening to this one。

I remember the first one was silly but highly entertaining nearly impossible to put down。 It had a nerdy charm。 This one was just over the top dorky and overthought。 It took itself too seriously and pointed out the references even more heavy-handedly。 Really, Ernest should have just made another contest that everyone has a great time solving it, maybe with a few fun twists。 Maybe even in a new decade。 Instead, I think he put way too much thought into it, and tried to make the stakes too high。 Wa I remember the first one was silly but highly entertaining nearly impossible to put down。 It had a nerdy charm。 This one was just over the top dorky and overthought。 It took itself too seriously and pointed out the references even more heavy-handedly。 Really, Ernest should have just made another contest that everyone has a great time solving it, maybe with a few fun twists。 Maybe even in a new decade。 Instead, I think he put way too much thought into it, and tried to make the stakes too high。 Way too long of a setup in the beginning。 The protagonist still had the mind, personality, and character development of an 8 year old boy。 Ok, the "dork slayer" was pretty funny, I'll admit that much。 。。。more

Ready Player Two is the follow on from Ready Player One。 I found it a little slow to start, but once it got going it really got going。 Much like the first book, there's a new 'easter egg' to be found。 This time it's the Seven Shards of the Siren's Soul (loving that alliteration)。 Wade and the rest of the High Five must team up again to save the world, quite literally, from a rogue AI holding everyone hostage using the newest ONI technology。 With hints of Sword Art Online and Avengers; Ultron, th Ready Player Two is the follow on from Ready Player One。 I found it a little slow to start, but once it got going it really got going。 Much like the first book, there's a new 'easter egg' to be found。 This time it's the Seven Shards of the Siren's Soul (loving that alliteration)。 Wade and the rest of the High Five must team up again to save the world, quite literally, from a rogue AI holding everyone hostage using the newest ONI technology。 With hints of Sword Art Online and Avengers; Ultron, this sequel is a great read for anyone who was a fan of the first book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I had high expectations for this book given how much I loved this one and I was expecting something new and this was just another quest。 I enjoyed most aspects of the quest but I was expecting something new。 This was enjoyable, but not rememberable。Why on Earth is Halliday now some twisted and creepy guy who took Kira’s memories to keep as his own??? He was the hero in the first book for those who sparked creativity and being a nerd and now I look at him way differently。

Not as good as Ready Player One, but still a great read。 I felt like it was rushed。 Too many things for the characters to accomplish in too short a span of time。 It's a good thing the characters were already established or it would have been confusing。 Not as good as Ready Player One, but still a great read。 I felt like it was rushed。 Too many things for the characters to accomplish in too short a span of time。 It's a good thing the characters were already established or it would have been confusing。 。。。more

While I really liked Ready Player One, this book seems like it was more of a sequel for sequel's sake。 it lost most of the great character development and new ideas of the first book, and just wasn't as enjoyable to read。Note that I listened to the audiobook, rather than reading the book。 While I really liked Ready Player One, this book seems like it was more of a sequel for sequel's sake。 it lost most of the great character development and new ideas of the first book, and just wasn't as enjoyable to read。Note that I listened to the audiobook, rather than reading the book。 。。。more

(More detailed, thought out review coming。。。 eventually。)The reviews made me hesitate but I thought it was good! A good continuation on the original story and more progressive and, in my opinion, thought out。 I think it was a little “kissed up” to the LGBTQ+ community but I still enjoyed it and thought it was nice of Ernest to acknowledge the minor bigotry of the original book。 A good 3。5。

Let me start this with saying I am a fan of Ready Player One。 As a family we listened to it and then watched the movie。 Such a fun story and very well written。 Ready Player 2 is very well written with extreme detail and Will Wheaton does a fantastic job narrating。 He is one of my all time favorite readers。 That being said, this book has a very specific audience。 It is very nuanced in 80's pop culture (which I love), video games, fantasy, etc。 I would imagine this would be very difficult for some Let me start this with saying I am a fan of Ready Player One。 As a family we listened to it and then watched the movie。 Such a fun story and very well written。 Ready Player 2 is very well written with extreme detail and Will Wheaton does a fantastic job narrating。 He is one of my all time favorite readers。 That being said, this book has a very specific audience。 It is very nuanced in 80's pop culture (which I love), video games, fantasy, etc。 I would imagine this would be very difficult for some people to follow。 It's pretty nerdy! I really loved Ready Player One。 Ready Player Two I got for Christmas and it is well done and takes the characters much further but some of the things I loved about the first one I felt either didn't work here or were missing。 Not saying it is a bad book by any means and it is the follow up to a smash hit like RP1。 I would have given the book a 5 star but there was one section in the book that I felt was drawn on too long。 Now it's because I'm not a fan of that topic/fan in that section, but if I really loved Ready Player One。 Ready Player Two I got for Christmas and it is well done and takes the characters much further but some of the things I loved about the first one I felt either didn't work here or were missing。 Not saying it is a bad book by any means and it is the follow up to a smash hit like RP1。 I would have given the book a 5 star but there was one section in the book that I felt was drawn on too long。 Now it's because I'm not a fan of that topic/fan in that section, but if you are, you will love that entire part。 It was the moment in the book that came to a halt simply for me。 Still really well written and a wonderful continuation of my beloved characters and games。 The whole story in general is good, just that one part pulled me out。 Still, if you loved the first book or movie and love the writer, you'll love this book。 。。。more

I liked it well enough。 Not as much as the first though。 Like Ready Player One was new and more exciting and this just felt too much of the same。 If they make another movie though, I will probably watch it, if only for the Prince scene。 I think that would be fun to watch。

Ready Player One was an impossibly hard book to write a sequel for, but Ernest Kline manages it by scaling back and focusing on a handful of specific fandoms - specifically John Hughes films, the "artist" Prince, and Tolkien's Middle EarthA new, even more immersive way to access the OASIS has been created, making the Wade Watts and his friends super rich and super hated。As Wade himself puts it toward the beginning of the story, "I was no longer the heroic underdog from the stacks doing heroic ba Ready Player One was an impossibly hard book to write a sequel for, but Ernest Kline manages it by scaling back and focusing on a handful of specific fandoms - specifically John Hughes films, the "artist" Prince, and Tolkien's Middle EarthA new, even more immersive way to access the OASIS has been created, making the Wade Watts and his friends super rich and super hated。As Wade himself puts it toward the beginning of the story, "I was no longer the heroic underdog from the stacks doing heroic battle with the Sixers。 I was just another asshole billionaire。"Wade redeems himself, battling an evil AI on another video game styled quest (this time it's seven shards instead of three keys)。However, the premise is a bit stale and it really really does feel like the author used up all of his 1980s nostalgia in the first book。Or as one of the bad guys says while taunting the heroes, "Don't you kids ever get tired of picking through the wreckage of a previous generation's nostalgia?" 。。。more

Another rewarding romp through 80s pop culture in this fun sequel。 Parzival and his team of super-geeks rule the OASIS again in (another) high stakes (if they don't find the seven shards, millions will die) virtual quest。 You'll get a heavy dose of Tolkein, Prince, John Hughes, and Sega in this one, new characters, though they're minor, and all of you old favorites。 An interesting aspect of this sequel is the way it acknowledges the cis-gendered white male skew in the world of pop culture and ha Another rewarding romp through 80s pop culture in this fun sequel。 Parzival and his team of super-geeks rule the OASIS again in (another) high stakes (if they don't find the seven shards, millions will die) virtual quest。 You'll get a heavy dose of Tolkein, Prince, John Hughes, and Sega in this one, new characters, though they're minor, and all of you old favorites。 An interesting aspect of this sequel is the way it acknowledges the cis-gendered white male skew in the world of pop culture and has some real girl-power and queer-power moments。 Loads of fun, but I will admit to my mind wandering in the challenges involving the topics I'm not invested as heavily in (Prince, Sega, for me)。 。。。more

A bit of a letdownLet me preface this by saying I absolutely adored Ready Player One。 It’s one of my favorite books of all time。 It was such a joyous surprise。 Ready Player Two。。。 well, it just fell short。 All the references that were so fun in the first book felt forced in this one。 All the action that drew me into the first one felt forced in the second one, and it read so much more like a cheesy YA Novel。 Maybe RPo should have been a standalone。 :/

I really wanted to like this book, but felt it leaned in too much on what made the first book enjoyable。 I wanted something different and ended up with more of the same…

Ready Player One was one of the best books I've ever read, so when this came out, of course I was going to read it。 This book was very much in line with the first book, but the moments of enjoyment, the moments in the book where Ernest dives into a movie, a game, or a theme from the 80's was just a miss this time around for me。 There was a section about a video game I've never heard of, some kids tv shows I had never heard of, and the music this time。。。Prince/The Artist Formerly Known As。 Well, Ready Player One was one of the best books I've ever read, so when this came out, of course I was going to read it。 This book was very much in line with the first book, but the moments of enjoyment, the moments in the book where Ernest dives into a movie, a game, or a theme from the 80's was just a miss this time around for me。 There was a section about a video game I've never heard of, some kids tv shows I had never heard of, and the music this time。。。Prince/The Artist Formerly Known As。 Well, I was never a fan of his, so that whole section was a complete miss for me。 The one saving grace was a section dealing with John Hughes。 That was nice。 It takes a while to get going, but the adventure is great, and some great twists and turns。 I didn't think there was a way to make a sequel after the way the first book ended, but he did it and he did it well。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this audiobook book。 I always enjoy Wil Wheaton's narration and it's a perfect match for this story。 My only sadness is that my daughter (14), a huge sci-fi fan, would miss 90% of the 80's cultural references which the book is built around so I can't recommend it to her。 Really enjoyed this audiobook book。 I always enjoy Wil Wheaton's narration and it's a perfect match for this story。 My only sadness is that my daughter (14), a huge sci-fi fan, would miss 90% of the 80's cultural references which the book is built around so I can't recommend it to her。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this second trip to the Oasis, but it wasn’t nearly as good or fun as the first one。 Many parts of it seemed a bit too formulaic and predictable, but then it would play out with a few twists to keep it fun。It began more as a realistic look at what would happen if these books were to actually happen。 Like maybe all the events of the first story maybe didn’t tie up nicely in a perfect little bow, which is how life realistically works anyway。 As all the events of this story cam I thoroughly enjoyed this second trip to the Oasis, but it wasn’t nearly as good or fun as the first one。 Many parts of it seemed a bit too formulaic and predictable, but then it would play out with a few twists to keep it fun。It began more as a realistic look at what would happen if these books were to actually happen。 Like maybe all the events of the first story maybe didn’t tie up nicely in a perfect little bow, which is how life realistically works anyway。 As all the events of this story came to their conclusion, that reality was thrown out the window and we get another perfect little bow—but this time as far from reality as possible。Enjoyed it? Such a ham-fisted, preachy and disappointing sequel to a great book。

A weak sequel。 Any potential for charm is lost beneath agonising detail for every passing reference。 The story doesn't start until halfway through and I found it impossible to get behind any of the original characters, and the new ones make only passing appearances。 I can't figure out who this was written for。 It's YA filled to the brim with references that only 35+ readers would appreciate。 However, it is readable and moves at a good pace once the story (finally) gets going。 A weak sequel。 Any potential for charm is lost beneath agonising detail for every passing reference。 The story doesn't start until halfway through and I found it impossible to get behind any of the original characters, and the new ones make only passing appearances。 I can't figure out who this was written for。 It's YA filled to the brim with references that only 35+ readers would appreciate。 However, it is readable and moves at a good pace once the story (finally) gets going。 。。。more

I am fluctuating between 'I did not like it' and 'It was ok'。 Just like the first book this one is a worldview field of landmines。 There's so much going on and whereas in other books it can be hidden, in this one it is in your face。 All story relies on a certain amount of coincidence but this one takes that to the limit, the coincidence meter is a slave to the story and things happen just in time for the right sequence of events to happen。There is a plot twist of sorts at the end that makes very I am fluctuating between 'I did not like it' and 'It was ok'。 Just like the first book this one is a worldview field of landmines。 There's so much going on and whereas in other books it can be hidden, in this one it is in your face。 All story relies on a certain amount of coincidence but this one takes that to the limit, the coincidence meter is a slave to the story and things happen just in time for the right sequence of events to happen。There is a plot twist of sorts at the end that makes very little sense。 To say the least it was not my cup of tea but I kept reading to the end to see how far down the rabbit hole goes。 Answer。。 It goes way way down。 。。。more

While I still hate Wade, I actually like that they finally focused on the real life issues of the rotting earth。 And then they lost me again, when they decided to make copies of every human (being thinking that was perfectly okay) ((without telling said humans)) and sending them out to space in search of a habitable planet。。。yeah。 WTF Cline。 Its like a 12 year old wrote this with 0 fucks given。 Felt like a quick crash grab for me。 Watch the movie be 1000x worse too 🙄

Really a disappointment, but I won't be as harsh as some of the other reviewers。 The story isn't too bad once the quests begin and the stakes are revealed (approx。 130 pages in)。 The problem with the book is the narrator。 350 pages is a long time to spend with a narrator you can't stand。 The last third of the book talks about how bad of a person Halliday was; is Wade any better? Does this book deserve 5 stars for its writing, themes, and uniqueness? Probably not。 Except, I grew up in the 80’s at the arcade, playing D&D, and living the pop culture so prominent in this book - so 5 stars it is 😝This is a fun story that reads like a story from the era it draws so much from。 Like the movies of the 80’s and the simpler video games of the past - it’s a fun story that won’t take you down deep philosophical questions about the future of humanity (well。。。 no spoilers)。I liked it。

Unlike the first book which was light-hearted, fun, fast-paced, and full of adventure this book is darker, pessimistic, and tries to be politically correct。 While the rest of the High Five have gone on to more productive endeavors, Wade is emotionally stuck in neutral。 When another Halliday quest suddenly appears they must work together to find the Seven Shards of the Siren's Soul and save the world。 Unlike the first book which was light-hearted, fun, fast-paced, and full of adventure this book is darker, pessimistic, and tries to be politically correct。 While the rest of the High Five have gone on to more productive endeavors, Wade is emotionally stuck in neutral。 When another Halliday quest suddenly appears they must work together to find the Seven Shards of the Siren's Soul and save the world。 。。。more
