Summary

This biography from a New York Times bestselling author follows Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Margaret as they navigate life in the royal spotlight。 They were the closest of sisters and the best of friends。 But when, in a quixotic twist of fate, their uncle Edward Vlll abdicated the throne, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered。 Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called 'Lillibet。' And bow to her wishes。 Margaret's struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system—and her fraught relationship with its expectations—was often a source of tension。。 This book explores their relationship over the years。

Andrew Morton, a noted biographer of the British royals, delves deeply into the shared histories of England’s Queen and her only sibling, Princess Margaret, in ELIZABETH & MARGARET。 The two were opposites in many ways yet always mindful of one another。They were born in the relatively calm patch following the First World War, and in only a few years moved from being granddaughters to nieces to daughters of the King。 Their father, George IV, assumed the monarchy after the abdication of his brother Andrew Morton, a noted biographer of the British royals, delves deeply into the shared histories of England’s Queen and her only sibling, Princess Margaret, in ELIZABETH & MARGARET。 The two were opposites in many ways yet always mindful of one another。They were born in the relatively calm patch following the First World War, and in only a few years moved from being granddaughters to nieces to daughters of the King。 Their father, George IV, assumed the monarchy after the abdication of his brother, Edward, to marry a divorced woman。 Suddenly the girls’ roles changed: Elizabeth was now first in succession to the throne and had to be treated as such。 Margaret, who had always been more outgoing, had to accede in many areas to her more thoughtful older sister, though the affection between them survived the alteration。Then another war hit, and for most of that time, they were sequestered in Windsor Castle with widely differing routines。 Elizabeth was being taught the responsibilities of a future monarch, while Margaret was treated, rather boringly, as a typical private school student。 Still the two persisted in doing things as sisters --- they made a garden and, befitting Margaret’s dramatic leanings, put on plays to entertain the family。 In their teens, though, Margaret began to realize that “she would play second fiddle to her sister” --- and curtsy to her --- for the rest of their lives。Morton’s book traces the separate skeins of these two complex personalities, who in public always acted in character。 Margaret became a cigarette-smoking bon vivant with many love affairs to her name, while Elizabeth maintained the dignity of the crown and calmly studied the proper etiquette。 After marrying the man of her choice, the handsome and respectable Philip, she would assume her role in office。 Margaret pursued but never managed to marry divorcée Peter Townsend; the complications of the laws of succession to the throne and Elizabeth’s plotting --- sometimes with Margaret’s collusion --- kept the two from tying the knot。 Even after Margaret finally married --- and then divorced --- a commoner, rumors of her indiscretions kept the presses rolling。 But in private, the Queen generally sympathized with her sister, knowing that Margaret was far less self-confident than she appeared to be in front of the paparazzi。Morton has mined related materials before, with his bestselling biography, DIANA: HER TRUE STORY, winning international kudos。 He has gleaned snippets about these two remarkable subjects from private records and insightful insiders。 The dual portrait that emerges is of powerful women who cared for one another as best they could in the roles that fate assigned。 One was a self-contained monarch toeing the line, and the other a frustrated drama queen drawing larger boundaries, each setting new standards for what females could and should aspire to。Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott 。。。more

This book should have been entitled "Margaret, Margaret and a little bit of Elizabeth" because the author focused most of the book on Margaret。 I probably read every book about the royals that is published so I didn't really learn anything new, especially since there were two quite extensive bios published about Margaret and also Anthony Armstrong-Jones in the not too distant past。 The book even stops at Margaret's and the Queen Mother's deaths in 2002 with just a blurb of what to expect when th This book should have been entitled "Margaret, Margaret and a little bit of Elizabeth" because the author focused most of the book on Margaret。 I probably read every book about the royals that is published so I didn't really learn anything new, especially since there were two quite extensive bios published about Margaret and also Anthony Armstrong-Jones in the not too distant past。 The book even stops at Margaret's and the Queen Mother's deaths in 2002 with just a blurb of what to expect when the Queen herself dies。 Considering that 19 years has passed since their deaths and the Queen is still very much with us, I'm not sure why he didn't write more about the Queen's life since 2002。 A little unsatisfying。 。。。more

Like other Andrew Morton biographies I have read, this is an enjoyable and well-written book that describes the complex and interesting sisterhood between Elizabeth and Margaret。 Siblings often have strained and complex relationships and this one was especially difficult。 (Elizabeth's two grandsons now seem to be carrying on a similar struggle。) It's a dynamic that makes for an absorbing read。I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review。 Like other Andrew Morton biographies I have read, this is an enjoyable and well-written book that describes the complex and interesting sisterhood between Elizabeth and Margaret。 Siblings often have strained and complex relationships and this one was especially difficult。 (Elizabeth's two grandsons now seem to be carrying on a similar struggle。) It's a dynamic that makes for an absorbing read。I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review。 。。。more

Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters is an account of Elizabeth and Margaret's lives from the time their lives were forever changed by their uncle's abdication of the throne。 Their small family of four did not expect to be thrust into the line of succession。 This book covers their lives until Margaret's death in 2002。 It tells the story of two women who could not be more different but who had a sisterly bond that withstood every test imaginable。This biography focuses a Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters is an account of Elizabeth and Margaret's lives from the time their lives were forever changed by their uncle's abdication of the throne。 Their small family of four did not expect to be thrust into the line of succession。 This book covers their lives until Margaret's death in 2002。 It tells the story of two women who could not be more different but who had a sisterly bond that withstood every test imaginable。This biography focuses a little more on Margaret's life and how it revolved around her sister's life。 From her numerous affairs, her toxic marriage, and her fast lifestyle, Margaret was both revered and vilified by the public and press, like two sides of the same coin。 She was known as the fun sister, with a charming personality, high style and who everyone wanted to be around。 But she was also criticized for having too much fun and not taking her role as a civil servant seriously。 I liked that Margaret's loyalty to her sister is a constant theme in this book。 No matter her natural inclination to live her life how she wanted, Margaret always deferred to her sister and the Crown。 I wouldn't consider myself a royals fan。 My knowledge of the royal family is limited and a lot of what I know is through the fictionalized and dramatized stories told through the Netflix series, The Crown。 When I came across this book, I was immediately intrigued by learning more about the relationship between Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret。 As someone who is fairly new to the Royal Family world, I really enjoyed this book。 I found the details of their lives fascinating。 This non-fiction book was an easy read for me because it read like a fictional drama。 This clearly well-researched biography was eye-opening and I'm looking forward to reading more books about the Royal Family。 The author, Andrew Morton, is known for his biography, Diana: Her True Story and I am definitely going to be adding that book to my TBR list。⚠️: war, substance abuse, death of loved ones, infidelity, toxic relationshipsThank you to Grand Central Publishing for a gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This was the fascinating biography of the two royal sisters; Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who were thrown into the direct line of succession when their uncle abdicated the throne to marry an American divorcee。 I loved every minute of this Royal biography because I find the entire family and their way of doing things so interesting。 My favorite part of this book is when there were rumors dispelled or parts of The Crown that I thought were true, were actually corrected in this biography。 This was the fascinating biography of the two royal sisters; Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who were thrown into the direct line of succession when their uncle abdicated the throne to marry an American divorcee。 I loved every minute of this Royal biography because I find the entire family and their way of doing things so interesting。 My favorite part of this book is when there were rumors dispelled or parts of The Crown that I thought were true, were actually corrected in this biography。 I thought I knew a lot about these sisters already, but I learned so much! I just love reading about Princess Margaret, however this book did not introduce anything new about her life with the royal family。 If you are a fan of The Crown, the story really is not all that different, for all people saying there is not a lot of truth to that show。 Even in parts of the book it references the show if there were slight differences to the truth。 Even though the book is titled Elizabeth & Margaret, the latter is the focus of this book especially in the second half。 The book is I just love reading about Princess Margaret, however this book did not introduce anything new about her life with the royal family。 If you are a fan of The Crown, the story really is not all that different, for all people saying there is not a lot of truth to that show。 Even in parts of the book it references the show if there were slight differences to the truth。 Even though the book is titled Elizabeth & Margaret, the latter is the focus of this book especially in the second half。 The book is fine, but if you have read or seen stories of the Princess, this will not add anything new。Thank you NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Not my usual cup-o-tea, but ended up enjoying this。 If you love The Crown, you should read this。 Slightly different take on events - much less sensationalized for the most part。 Curious to see both Margaret and Elizabeth side-by-side in this way - their incompatibility mixed with fierce familial loyalty。 The Crown is really more focused on affairs of the state。。。 I received this as an ARC from GoodReads。

This in-depth look at how their Uncle David's decision to abdicate his throne, and how it affected not only the course of their lives but their sisterly bond, was utterly enthralling。As far as society was concerned, as well as their family, Margaret would forever walk two steps behind her beloved sister - something young, attention-seeking Margaret didn't take kindly to at first。 It was this sudden inferiority of standing that affected the younger daughter of the King of England more than anyone knew, even Margaret herself。 For all their flaws, their mistakes, I learned this: people are not monoliths。 If you want perfection, get a crown, not a queen。 If you want excellence, get a tiara, not a princess。These two vital figures - these two sisters - above all else, deeply cared for one another。 Elizabeth was constant in her love, and Margaret's loyalty never wavered。If you're obsessed with the history of the royals, specifically these Windsor royals, give this one a read。 You won't be disappointed!Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for gifting me with an ARC copy of this book! 。。。more
