Separated from nostalgia, The Sorcerer's Stone is decent at best。 While some interesting concepts & ideas are introduced, the writing lacks the depth needed to turn them into anything satisfying at more than the most basic level。While The Sorcerer's Stone is written toward a fairly young audience, compared to other children's fantasy books, it just falls flat。 Instead of wasting time (yours orr your children's) on this book, check out something like Matilda by Roald Dahl, A Wizard of Earthsea by Separated from nostalgia, The Sorcerer's Stone is decent at best。 While some interesting concepts & ideas are introduced, the writing lacks the depth needed to turn them into anything satisfying at more than the most basic level。While The Sorcerer's Stone is written toward a fairly young audience, compared to other children's fantasy books, it just falls flat。 Instead of wasting time (yours orr your children's) on this book, check out something like Matilda by Roald Dahl, A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K。 Le Guin, or Howl's Moving Castle。by Diana Wynne Jones。 。。。more

It's my first time reading this series and I have missed a treat! I'm listening to them on audio books because it's so much easier to concentrate on。 I'm halfway through book 2 and love it! The films certainly don't show how good these books。 I can't wait to listen to the rest。 Fabulous, Fabulous and fabulous with a bit of fantastic put in there too xx It's my first time reading this series and I have missed a treat! If I were rating on nostalgia alone, this would be 5 stars, no question。 But I can't deny that as I've grown up and begun to read more advanced literature, studying it at university, and writing my own works, Harry Potter has begun to annoy me more than it makes me smile。 JK Rowling's subsequent writings and comments have not helped this。Where do I start? It's poorly written, really。 Fine for children, but as someone sensitive to the use of language, I found the prose to be leaden and far from moving。 Rowling uses adverbs far too much, her sentences are at times too long, and it is bland and weighed down with pedestrian language。 That makes it approachable but also boring after a while。 Basically, Rowling has not been careful in her use of language, and so there is little more to pick up on on rereads - very few double meanings, references or such。 Those that are there feel forced or unintentional。Additionally, this book is meant to be from Harry's perspective, but there are points where it goes into another character's head, and it's jarring。 One has to be careful shifting POV and Rowling does not have the refined technique to make it work。 The main instance of this is when Ron and Harry battle the troll。 When Ron uses the Wingardium Leviosa spell, the book shifts to Ron's perspective for a sentence。 This is poor craft, especially as it was completely unnecessary。Then there are story beats that feel unearned and like wish fulfilment, as if Rowling is enforcing her own will on the story, breaking immersion - an example being the ending, with Dumbledore awarding just enough points to ensure Gryffindor victory。 It feels like trite moralising from Rowling, meant to impart a lesson rather than letting the events of the story speak for themselves。 It also would have been more interesting to have Slytherin still win - at least to me - as that would have been a more realistic depiction of heroism: sometimes, we do not get rewarded or recognised for our deeds, especially if we broke the rules。 This is not always fair, but it's what happens。So as big a part of my childhood as this series was, I'm afraid it's lost its lustre, replaced by more sophisticated, artful fair。 It will always hold a place in my heart。 But I'm not sure I will ever be able to enjoy it as I once did。 。。。more

I honestly only started to love these movies as an adult。 I thought I might as well try reading the books as I’ve watched a lot of videos detailing how so much plot and development of minor characters is left out of the films。 But to be honest, trying to read a children’s book as a 21-year-old for the first time。。。 it was just never going to really work out。 Written well and a story I do truly enjoy, but I really had to power through to the end。 I don’t know whether I want to continue or not, bu I honestly only started to love these movies as an adult。 I thought I might as well try reading the books as I’ve watched a lot of videos detailing how so much plot and development of minor characters is left out of the films。 But to be honest, trying to read a children’s book as a 21-year-old for the first time。。。 it was just never going to really work out。 Written well and a story I do truly enjoy, but I really had to power through to the end。 I don’t know whether I want to continue or not, but so far the second book has laid untouched on my dresser for over a month。。。 Oh well。 。。。more

Love the whole harry potter series。 This was my 5th time reading this book。 I find it so nostalgic and decided to re-read the series after reading the fan-fic all the yound dudes (which i would really recommend to any hp fans)。 Such a great adventure book。 The plot is so clever i was obsessed from the first page。 IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY THE HARRY POTTER SERIES DONT BUY NEW! DONT SUPPORT TRANSPHOBIC AUTHORS! BUY THEM SECOND HAND!

I love it, I mean Harry Potter is a classic and I absolutely adore it。
