Desiree Clary Bernadotte was a fascinating woman! I loved this book and how Desiree’s story unfolded through Pataki’s skilled touch。 I highly recommend this book!

A phenomenal read。 I could not put this book down。 It was a wonderful perspective from someone who is not often the spotlight of history。 Amazing how interconnected Desiree was to the history we know of today。 A breath of fresh air when so many books are focused on World War II, this is a great period in time。 The author Allison Pataki painted a beautiful picture。

Behind great men are the women。 If that is true, then this is a story of one of those women。 This is at heart, a love story, of love lost and love found。 It’s also a behind the scenes look at the French Revolution and Napoleon’s rise and fall, and rise and fall, and the tumultuous relationship between Napoleon and Josephine。 Readers interested in fashion and exploits of the ruling people during the Napoleon’s era will find much to absorb in this historical novel。 For this reader, I found Josephi Behind great men are the women。 If that is true, then this is a story of one of those women。 This is at heart, a love story, of love lost and love found。 It’s also a behind the scenes look at the French Revolution and Napoleon’s rise and fall, and rise and fall, and the tumultuous relationship between Napoleon and Josephine。 Readers interested in fashion and exploits of the ruling people during the Napoleon’s era will find much to absorb in this historical novel。 For this reader, I found Josephine behavior and her influence on Napoleon and the French people getting my attention。 The surprising education for me was Sweden。 Can’t say more to avoid being a spoiler。 。。。more

Good ReadThis book was a five star read about a real lesser known historical person--Desiree Clary。 Desiree lived in France at the time Napoleon Bonaparte first appeared on the scene。 They were engaged to marry, but he threw Desiree over for Josephine。 Napoleon's brother did marry Desiree's sister thereby forever entangling Desiree in Court life。 Napoleon did choose Desiree's husband, and it turned out to be a real love match。 Most of the book revolves around the Clary sisters, their husbands, a Good ReadThis book was a five star read about a real lesser known historical person--Desiree Clary。 Desiree lived in France at the time Napoleon Bonaparte first appeared on the scene。 They were engaged to marry, but he threw Desiree over for Josephine。 Napoleon's brother did marry Desiree's sister thereby forever entangling Desiree in Court life。 Napoleon did choose Desiree's husband, and it turned out to be a real love match。 Most of the book revolves around the Clary sisters, their husbands, and Napoleon and Josephine。 The last part of the book deals with Desiree and her husband in a position brokered by Napoleon-- King and Queen of Sweden。 THE LAST GREAT DANCE ON EARTH by Sandra Gulland is about Napoleon and Josephine。 My sympathy went to Josephine in that book。 This book showed that Josephine and Napoleon were equally harnessed。 Desiree is the person who told readers all about the short Emperor and his barren empress。 She wrote her memoirs long after Napoleon's death。 Perhaps she would have been kinder to him had he not published his memoirs during his final exile wherein he told about his deflowering Desiree during their short engagement。 Thank you, Ms。 Pataki, for a good read。 。。。more

Somewhat interesting tale of Desiree Clary。 A good filler but not a gripping, nor particularly enlightening story of Desiree's life。 It is more a look at Napolean and Josephine from the point of view of an immature girl who becomes an immature woman。 It's tepid reading at best。 Somewhat interesting tale of Desiree Clary。 A good filler but not a gripping, nor particularly enlightening story of Desiree's life。 It is more a look at Napolean and Josephine from the point of view of an immature girl who becomes an immature woman。 It's tepid reading at best。 。。。more

I read six chapters of the 47。 Maybe I just didn't like young Napoleon。 Maybe French ways aren't my preferred ways。 This prose is not for me。 I read six chapters of the 47。 Maybe I just didn't like young Napoleon。 Maybe French ways aren't my preferred ways。 This prose is not for me。 。。。more

This definitely reads as a historical fiction (heavy on the historical part), and the timeline spans from when she is 16 to 83。 It was a little hard to stick with it, so it would be hard for me to recommend it to just anyone。

Adrienne

I prefer historical fiction with a little less focus on the romance but this was still a good book with an interesting look into the life of a lesser-known figure in history。

I read Desiree by Annemarie Selinko years ago & found Desiree to be a fascinating character - from simple silk merchants daughter to Queen of Sweden is quite a jump in life。 It's a bit dated so I was excited to find a new book。 I enjoyed it but I didn't love it。 I wanted more pages devoted to her life after she reluctantly moved to Sweden。 I would really welcome a well researched biography on Desiree。 I read Desiree by Annemarie Selinko years ago & found Desiree to be a fascinating character - from simple silk merchants daughter to Queen of Sweden is quite a jump in life。 It's a bit dated so I was excited to find a new book。 I enjoyed it but I didn't love it。 I wanted more pages devoted to her life after she reluctantly moved to Sweden。 I would really welcome a well researched biography on Desiree。 。。。more

I really liked this book about a little known historical figure in France, Desiree Clary。 She was once engaged to Napoleon who forsake her for Josephine。 But she ended up in the French court as a friend of Josephine。 She then married Bernadotte who was one of Napoleons lieutenants and they eventually ended up as royalty in Sweden。 Well written and interesting even though it was vey long。

This book was excellent。 Beautifully written。 It was a story that I was unfamiliar with, and so I enjoyed hearing it from Desiree's perspective。 I always love it when I finish a book and think to myself "I can't wait to read this again"。 So it was with this book。 I will not give away any spoilers, but I found the end to be perfect。 This book was excellent。 Beautifully written。 It was a story that I was unfamiliar with, and so I enjoyed hearing it from Desiree's perspective。 I always love it when I finish a book and think to myself "I can't wait to read this again"。 So it was with this book。 I will not give away any spoilers, but I found the end to be perfect。 。。。more

Well Read Well Said

-Rating: 3。5/5-Impeccably researched story about Napoleon Bonaparte’s series of relationships told from the POV of a former fiancée -The descriptiveness of French settings, complexity of the characters, and the sheer amount of research the author completed to write this book is 💯-Lost a few points because I felt I was waiting for the climax forever, and it was a bit lackluster IMO-Read if you ❤️ Romeo and Juliet storylines & French historical fiction

Melissa

4。5 stars really enjoyed historical fiction of Desiree Clary, Napoleon Bonaparte first fiancee。

Fascinating story of Desiree ClaryHow have I never heard of Desiree? I have studied France for four decades。 I've read all I could on Napoleon and Josephine。 This is a well written book that delves into the passions and emotions of a tumultuous time in French history。 Plus tells the little known beginning of Sweden's royal family and their connection to Josephine。 History can be more unbelievable than fiction。 Fascinating story of Desiree ClaryHow have I never heard of Desiree?
