Summary

In The Big Book of Blooms, the next installment in the wildly successful Big Book series, Yuval Zommer’s charming illustrations bring to life some of the most colorful, flamboyant, and unusual flowers from across the globe。

In the opening pages, readers will learn all about botany, including how to recognize different types of flowers。 Subsequent pages illustrate the various habitats that are home to flora such as pitcher plants, the giant water lily, and the weirdly wonderful corpse flower。 Readers will discover which flowers are endangered and why some blooms are fragrant or colorful, not to mention grisly details about carnivorous and poisonous flowers。

This title pairs picture-book charm and concise, informative text to create a beautiful book for children to return to。 Zommer’s quirky illustrations appeal to young readers, who will relish these fun and amazing facts about the world’s most exciting plants。

Stunningly beautiful, simple, and welcoming

Absolutely beautiful book。 Read it cover to cover with my 8, 5, and 3 year olds。 We borrowed it from the library but I’m thinking about purchasing a copy。 Loved it。

I picked this book up thinking it was a floral atlas。 Turns out it's a children's book, but it's still quite delightful and worth a read by adults。 They are semi-divided by types, such as orchids, bulbs, bromeliads, and others。 There are pages dedicated to rare and endangered flowers, such as a sweeet little water lily that only grows in one hot spring in the world。 Creepy kids will enjoy the Venus flytrap page; children who love animals may be saddened at the frog skeletons and other little cri I picked this book up thinking it was a floral atlas。 Turns out it's a children's book, but it's still quite delightful and worth a read by adults。 They are semi-divided by types, such as orchids, bulbs, bromeliads, and others。 There are pages dedicated to rare and endangered flowers, such as a sweeet little water lily that only grows in one hot spring in the world。 Creepy kids will enjoy the Venus flytrap page; children who love animals may be saddened at the frog skeletons and other little critters in the bellies of the flytraps。The illustrations are almost abstract, though for the most part capture the essence of the physical characteristics of the flowers presented。 I especially liked the pages dedicated to the stunning bird of paradise flower。The book ends with a brief description of how to grow your own flowers, including repurposing old rainboots as flower pots。 This would be a fun read for a child interested in plants, or to perhaps spark an interest for a child prior to a visit to a botanical garden。 。。。more

This picture book was so much fun to look at and read! Right away, it captured my full attention, delighted my imagination with unexpected facts (I love bats and never expected there to be so many tidbits about bats contained within, turns out they have quite the relationship with flowers in habitats around the world!), and answered some of the questions I've always had about flowers but haven't taken the time to look up。 It's got a wonderful balance of pretty/creepy, everyday/rare, fun/serious This picture book was so much fun to look at and read! Also, while I appreciate the art style of this book, it doesn't do the best job of conveying the actual appearance of the flowers。 I had an image search going alongside my read in order to see what the flowers presented really look like, and think perhaps a visual glossary could be included containing real life pictures of the flowers to distinguish them from one another。 。。。more

Mom's ReviewAbsolutely lovely。 We have high expectations for Zommer's work, and The Big Book of Blooms does not disappoint。 User-friendly for all ages; information is presented topically and in small chunks accompanying bold illustrations。 The oversize pages filled with blooms fill your field of vision and the information fascinates。 Some is common knowledge, like seed dispersal, but much was novel for us, such as how Venus flytraps can only open and close a few times before dying。 We especially Mom's ReviewAbsolutely lovely。 We have high expectations for Zommer's work, and The Big Book of Blooms does not disappoint。 User-friendly for all ages; information is presented topically and in small chunks accompanying bold illustrations。 The oversize pages filled with blooms fill your field of vision and the information fascinates。 Some is common knowledge, like seed dispersal, but much was novel for us, such as how Venus flytraps can only open and close a few times before dying。 We especially enjoyed learning about nocturnal pollinators。 I enjoyed the sections about Kew Gardens (which I knew nothing about), birds of paradise (which I always associate with CA freeways), and protecting plant life and the environment。 The Big Book of Blooms is a delight to behold, and educational besides。 Oh, I almost forgot to mention – there is a golden bulb hidden on multiple pages that you have to find as you read。 Kinda like Goldbug from Richard Scarry。 Ideal for nature lovers and curious kids and adults, The Big Book of Blooms brings me joy and T entertainment and education。 The information is at T's level, but also good for adults who have next to no flower knowledge。。。yours truly。Son's Review(Age: 5)T enjoys perusing the book on his own and having sections read to him。 He especially enjoys the delightful subjects of bird poop, poisons, and corpse flowers。When his dad invited him to read: *emphatically* Mom and I have other plans to read [The Big Book of Blooms]。I'm looking for the birds of paradise section。 I found it!Let's read the "Dangerous and Deadly" section!I never knew that! (White flowers are mostly pollinated at night。)*laughing* Plop plop! They poop out the seeds!Note: A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

A great introduction to the world of flowers, flowering plants, seeds, poisonous plants, and more!Throughout the book, children of all ages are encouraged to locate the "golden bulb" in 15 "hiding places" throughout the book。 There is a key at the end to help you find what you may have missed。Also, there are a couple of pages of "Flower Words" (glossary) and an Index。 Beautifully done! WAUW! 。。。more

The Big Book of Blooms is the latest in a series of 'Big Books' from Yuval Zommer, which I have only just discovered。 This is a fascinating and gorgeously illustrated journey through the world of flowers。 It is filled with just the right amount of information to hold a primary-aged reader's attention, organised into sections about botany and recognising different types of flowers, 15 different flower types, life cycles, why some flowers are fragrant, gardening tips and more。 All of this is accom The Big Book of Blooms is the latest in a series of 'Big Books' from Yuval Zommer, which I have only just discovered。 This is a fascinating and gorgeously illustrated journey through the world of flowers。 It is filled with just the right amount of information to hold a primary-aged reader's attention, organised into sections about botany and recognising different types of flowers, 15 different flower types, life cycles, why some flowers are fragrant, gardening tips and more。 All of this is accompanied by beautiful, detailed pictures that deliver information all by themselves。The whole series, including the Big Book of Blue, Beasts, Bugs and Birds look fascinating。 Fantastic for inquiring minds from 8-13 and even beyond。 。。。more

A big beautiful book of flowers。 I am always thrilled when I see a new title from this series is being released。 They are all stunning and fascinating and THE BIG BOOK OF BLOOMS is no exception。 Zommer's gorgeous illustrations capture the flower world with perfection and his facts are as interesting as ever。 The information ranges from general about pollinators and why flowers are bright colors to diving in deep on a variety of flowers from water lilies and wildflowers to roses and tulips。 My ki A big beautiful book of flowers。 I am always thrilled when I see a new title from this series is being released。 They are all stunning and fascinating and THE BIG BOOK OF BLOOMS is no exception。 Zommer's gorgeous illustrations capture the flower world with perfection and his facts are as interesting as ever。 The information ranges from general about pollinators and why flowers are bright colors to diving in deep on a variety of flowers from water lilies and wildflowers to roses and tulips。 My kids were especially excited to see a page on the bird of paradise flowers on our front lawn。 A brilliant nonfiction book to have on your shelves or in your collection for spring time and garden units and flower enthusiasts。 。。。more
