Summary

Philadelphia, the late 1870s。 A city of gas lamps, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages—and home to the controversial surgeon Dr。 Spencer Black。 The son of a grave robber, young Dr。 Black studies at Philadelphia’s esteemed Academy of Medicine, where he develops an unconventional hypothesis: What if the world’s most celebrated mythological beasts—mermaids, minotaurs, and satyrs—were in fact the evolutionary ancestors of humankind?

The Resurrectionist offers two extraordinary books in one。 The first is a fictional biography of Dr。 Spencer Black, from a childhood spent exhuming corpses through his medical training, his travels with carnivals, and the mysterious disappearance at the end of his life。 The second book is Black’s magnum opus: The Codex Extinct Animalia, a Gray’s Anatomy for mythological beasts—dragons, centaurs, Pegasus, Cerberus—all rendered in meticulously detailed anatomical illustrations。 You need only look at these images to realize they are the work of a madman。 The Resurrectionist tells his story。

Dr。 Spencer Black is like a cross between Victor Frankenstein and P。T。 Barnum。

Somewhere in this stilted "historical" document, there is an intriguing and illusive plot that would have been much better served in a more common prose style, either straightforward narrative or a more detailed epistolary narrative。 Somewhere in this stilted "historical" document, there is an intriguing and illusive plot that would have been much better served in a more common prose style, either straightforward narrative or a more detailed epistolary narrative。 。。。more

I had high hopes for this。 The title itself is misleading。 Dr Black is a mess。

I bought this mainly for the artwork itself。 I do not regret the purchase。 Needless to say I was not disappointed with the artwork。 The only reason I docked a star was for the fact I didn’t get much satisfaction while reading。 Again, I paid for the illustrations more than the story itself。 I admit I was slightly disappointed in the written material but not within the illustrations。 I’ll admit I was satisfied but left with mixed emotions on this book。 I still do not regret the purchase。

。。。more

I initially gave this a 4 star rating but changed my mind over time。 My main complaint was I wanted more of the story and was left feeling a bit underwhelmed。 That being said, for the next few days this lack ended up drawing me in more。 I really did enjoy this book, the illustrations are stunning and I'm happy to have such a unique piece in my collection。 I initially gave this a 4 star rating but changed my mind over time。 My main complaint was I wanted more of the story and was left feeling a bit underwhelmed。 That being said, for the next few days this lack ended up drawing me in more。 I really did enjoy this book, the illustrations are stunning and I'm happy to have such a unique piece in my collection。 。。。more

I didn't really care for the story itself, I mostly bought and read this book for its illustrations。 So that being said, it was pretty much an average book。The story was interesting in the way Dr。 Black developed in life。 Besides that, I didn't really care。 The codex is the main atraction for sure。 I will keep this book more as decoration than as an actual book in my collection。 I didn't really care for the story itself, I mostly bought and read this book for its illustrations。 So that being said, it was pretty much an average book。The story was interesting in the way Dr。 Black developed in life。 Besides that, I didn't really care。 The codex is the main atraction for sure。 I will keep this book more as decoration than as an actual book in my collection。 。。。more

Very interesting biography and I enjoyed the journal entries -- feels very real。 the atomical drawings of the various mythological creatures was also very interesting and well done。 Highly recommend for people that love mythological creatures, oddities, macabre。 However, the bio is not for the faint of heart! it is a truly disturbing story。

This was an interesting art book in the style of recovered memoirs, letters, and newspaper items about the fictional Dr Spencer Black, a precocious physician who develops an obsession with how physical abnormalities may be remnants of past evolutions from mythical creatures。 It's filled with detailed anatomical drawings of various creatures。 Very well executed art。 This was an interesting art book in the style of recovered memoirs, letters, and newspaper items about the fictional Dr Spencer Black, a precocious physician who develops an obsession with how physical abnormalities may be remnants of past evolutions from mythical creatures。 It's filled with detailed anatomical drawings of various creatures。 Very well executed art。 。。。more

I love this book for just the art, the brief biography at the beginning was just icing on the cake。

Love itVery strange and morbid。 Love it and would love more books like it。 I enjoyed the illustrations as well, really bringing it to life。

Like others, very confused as to whether this was fiction or not。 Very interesting read, at points incredibly frustrating as Spencer Black grows more unhinged in his beliefs。

After reading a sample months ago I eagerly jumped into this title when I found time。 I wanted to l enjoy this book and for the most part, I did。 However, the narrative ended abruptly, almost lazily as if the author had run out of steam surprisingly 'The Codex' itself bar its stunning illustrations was even more of a let-down。 This is not to say that this book is not worth reading; it takes a few hours and parts are very strong and compelling, ultimately it was just not for me。 After reading a sample months ago I eagerly jumped into this title when I found time。 I wanted to l enjoy this book and for the most part, I did。 However, the narrative ended abruptly, almost lazily as if the author had run out of steam surprisingly 'The Codex' itself bar its stunning illustrations was even more of a let-down。 This is not to say that this book is not worth reading; it takes a few hours and parts are very strong and compelling, ultimately it was just not for me。 。。。more

I wish Dr。Specner Black's biography had been longer。 BIG SIGH!!!Macabre but a fascinating journey。The artwork and intricate details are brilliant。Can't believe this is Hudspeth's first book - outstandingI believe those who enjoyed both Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and Bram Stoker's "Dracula" will enjoy reading this piece of literature。Undeniably a collector's item too :) I'm glad I found it。 I wish Dr。Specner Black's biography had been longer。 BIG SIGH!!!Macabre but a fascinating journey。The artwork and intricate details are brilliant。Can't believe this is Hudspeth's first book - outstandingI believe those who enjoyed both Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and Bram Stoker's "Dracula" will enjoy reading this piece of literature。Undeniably a collector's item too :) I'm glad I found it。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Bellissimi disegni molto accurati e anche la storia a tratti raccapricciante。 Non mi è piaciuto il lasciare in sospeso la fine, Anche perché non si sa effettivamente cosa sia successo a lui, sua moglie o suo fratello。
