Summary

This little powerhouse of a book should be required reading for everyone。 Fertility specialists, in particular, need to actually get up to date with the research, because as someone who’s spent 2。5 years with two different fertility specialists, pretty much none of this was mentioned to me。 Some of it I knew from my naturopath, but even when I brought the book to the attention of my second fertility specialist, it was abundantly clear that she wasn’t going to act on it unless I made her。 Fett ha This little powerhouse of a book should be required reading for everyone。 Fertility specialists, in particular, need to actually get up to date with the research, because as someone who’s spent 2。5 years with two different fertility specialists, pretty much none of this was mentioned to me。 Some of it I knew from my naturopath, but even when I brought the book to the attention of my second fertility specialist, it was abundantly clear that she wasn’t going to act on it unless I made her。 Fett has lived the experience of infertility, and has the credentials to understand the research。 She explains it in easy to understand terminology, and she is honest with explaining what is known and what is not。 I literally took this book to my naturopath and opened up the recommendations page, and made my naturopath justifying why she wasn’t prescribing me certain things (most of it I am now taking)。 I did the same with the fertility specialist, and will be start taking some of it soon。 Patients must advocate for themselves, because doctors are not gods, and fertility clinics are often more wrapped up in their statistics than in outcomes for patients。 Fett’s book is an invaluable resource in that fight and I will be recommending it to everyone I know。 。。。more

This book was informative, but definitely geared more toward people who are going to be doing IVF。

Clear concise guidanceWould recommend this book as mandatory reading for those planning to or having challenges conceiving。 The author has put a lot of time into summarising the research and evidence based findings and laying out clear action items for all possible challenges。 This is a research heavy work so can be a tricky read for some but the time taken to read it is well worth it for the clear advice it provides。

I can't say whether this book in fact worked for me (yet), but it at least gives me some ways to feel in control in an area that I have so little control over。 After several losses, unsuccessful IUI, and "unexplained infertility", I want to do everything I can before my first IVF cycle to make sure I am as healthy as possible。 My REI only recommended a prenatal vitamin, fish oil, and vitamin D, but this book goes over so many other scientific studies and discusses the benefits of other vitamins I can't say whether this book in fact worked for me (yet), but it at least gives me some ways to feel in control in an area that I have so little control over。 After several losses, unsuccessful IUI, and "unexplained infertility", I want to do everything I can before my first IVF cycle to make sure I am as healthy as possible。 My REI only recommended a prenatal vitamin, fish oil, and vitamin D, but this book goes over so many other scientific studies and discusses the benefits of other vitamins and supplements, as well as lifestyle changes。 Many of the suggestions (cutting out plastic in your kitchen, not using products with pthlates and parabens) are often recommended for patients going through chemo, but they are lifestyle changes that probably EVERY person would benefit to follow。 。。。more

I followed this book and became pregnant naturally at 40。 Gave birth to a very healthy baby at 41。 We were given an estimated 5% chance IVF would work。 Fell pregnant the cycle we were due to start IVF。Could be complete coincidence but I believe this book helped get my body in the best possible health to conceive and carry our baby。 I recommend it to anyone who will listen,

My learning points from this book were so numerous that it is tricky to know where to begin。 Some topics covered by It Starts With The Egg were concepts of which I already had a vague understanding, for example, that plastics are toxic, but I was missing the ‘why’ and ‘to what extent’ which were comprehensively covered within this book。 Some of my main takeaways included: - It reinforced the importance of sleep, catapulting me into developing a rigid sleep routine, including the use of magnesium My learning points from this book were so numerous that it is tricky to know where to begin。 Some topics covered by It Starts With The Egg were concepts of which I already had a vague understanding, for example, that plastics are toxic, but I was missing the ‘why’ and ‘to what extent’ which were comprehensively covered within this book。 Some of my main takeaways included: - It reinforced the importance of sleep, catapulting me into developing a rigid sleep routine, including the use of magnesium spray on my body prior to Bedfordshire。 - I indulged in private testing for Vitamin D levels and a full thyroid panel as well as visiting the GP to be tested for celiac disease。 This was to rule out the common undiagnosed reasons for fertility problems explained in the book。- *Your eggs develop 3-4 months in advance which means you need to be making changes to improve egg quality at the very least 4 months in advance Therefore, take a prenatal vitamin at least 3-4 months in advance (earlier than that is fine too! a prenatal will be beneficial during childbearing years as long as you are not detoxing while you are taking them in which case they would likely pass through your urine)。Recent scientific research shows that chromosomal abnormalities can be influenced by nutrients and lifestyle factors that are in your control。 - You can improve egg quality by reducing your exposure to specific toxins that can harm fertility: BPA (the chemical found in plastic food containers and paper receipts) and phthalates (found in plastics, fragrances, beauty and cleaning products) disrupt proteins that help make estrogen and estrogen production and it blocks estrogen from binding to its receptors。 Estrogen is needed to stimulate follicle growth further for the egg to mature。 Reduce your exposure to BPA by: a。 only buying canned goods labeled “BPA-Free”b。 replacing plastic containers with glassc。 if using plastic containers, hand wash them and do not use them with heat (microwave, dishwasher, hot soups or foods)c。 say no to the receipt。 who saves a receipt these days? say no or wash your hands after handling if its necessary - Reduce your exposure to phthalates by:look for phthalate-free when purchasing beauty, laundry, and cleaning products (I personally use the think dirty to make sure products are non-toxic)avoid PVC or vinyl (often found in shower curtains, raincoats, placemats, and makeup bags)Things that can affect fertility: vitamin D deficiency, hypothyroidism, Celiac disease, gum disease (make sure you are flossing, brushing, oil pulling, etc。 to detox the mouth regularly from bacteria)。 If you suspect or know that you have any of these conditions, work with your physician or functional medicine practitioner to treat them。 。。。more

OMG, I can't begin to say what a MIRACLE this book is!Strongly recommend for anyone trying to get pregnant and especially women who are looking to have their eggs frozen and/or do IVF (or IUI)。WOW。IN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS following her 'recommendations' my cycle is regular *and* all my labs are showing normal/healthy ranges! I also retested my AMH last month (I'd had that tested 2 years ago when my 'problems' started) and was thrilled to see it had improved as well! (AMH is relative to ovarian reserve)。 That's right, my egg quality went up with age! (my details below, if curious)Another amazing thing happened with my husband!! After reading the chapter on endocrine disrupters (eg BPA); I started to avoid plastics at all costs。 While we've been using glass storage containers & eco "hippie" products for years, I still sometimes bought plastic fizzy waters。 My husband no longer gets 'rogue' headaches!! I wondered if it had been the bottles。。。 then he told me he'd bought the waters for himself a few times, and every time they gave him a headache!!SUMMARY: *Reduce overall carbohydrate intake and increase overall protein intake, but do not do "low carb" ideally 40% carb, 30% fat, 30% protein * Choose "carbs" in the form of quinoa, steel-cut oats, wild rice, lentils, legumes* strongly limit starchy vegetables (sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash) and potatoes, cereals, white rice, and corn should be avoided * key is to balance blood sugar levels* limit fruits (2 servings per day max, whole fruits only)* increase whole fats (eg raw nuts, avocado, seeds) * increase leafy greens non-starchy vegetables* ORGANIC EVERYTHING* berries (for antioxidants) * avoid refined grains, sugar, sweeteners* avoid gluten/dairy if you have an inflammatory or autoimmune condition (eg endometriosis)* avoid caffeine/alcohol, no soda * get tested for celiac disease if history/symptoms * get thyroid tested (full panel) esp。 if miscarriage * take supplements (this applies more to IVF/TTC) but in general: vitamin D, C, E, dha (omega 3), even IF you have "normal" levels。 If doing egg things, CoQ-10 (ubiquinol), R-alpha lipoic acid, NAC, DHEA (maybe), folate/prenatal。 The doses are super specific and not all brands and "types" are "good" so before you drop $60-$200 on supplements, check out Fett's website or this book so you buy the right ones。 One CRAZY MIND BLOWING thing I read, was that men think they're off the hook if they pass a sperm test--but she points out the tests only look at how many sperm and how they are swimming。 The test doesn't look at their DNA! So what's the point of having a lot of sperm if they're defective? Fortunately, men can improve their sperm quality and she has a chapter dedicated to that as well。My husband implemented a few things out of curiosity and said he feels better, has more energy, can ride his bike longer, and is recovering faster from his workouts。 SO THIS IS A BIBLE LADIES IF YOU WANNA BE A MAMA! ------MY BACKGROUND: Years of workaholism (+ overextending myself) brought on adrenal fatigue (HPA axis dysfunction) which also put my hormones (and cycle) out of whack。 My labs were always inconsistent。 For example, I'd have low T3 one month (hypothyroidism) but be well in the normal range at the next test, despite not having changed anything。 Likewise my lady hormones (eg estrogen, progesterone, lh) were "quiet" nothing seemed to be happening, or if it was, it wasn't doing what it was supposed to do。 (I had all my vitamins (eg D, B12, iron) checked as well, which were normal。) For 18+ months I consulted different doctors, specialists, natural paths, acupuncture (etc)。 I also quit my stressful job, moved out of the city, left social media (etc)。When my labs/cycle didn't improve, I reluctantly tried birth control which made me feel worse/sicker (nausea, insomnia)。 I also tried different hormone therapies, but the side effects were intolerable。FYI, I felt relatively fine off the meds。 My only 'symptom' was that I tired more easily than pre-AF and my irregular cycle was annoying。 Yet, I kept looking for a "fix" because I knew long-term, low estrogen (etc) could have consequences。 I started reading every book I could on hormones/fertility/the female cycle。 I learned a wealth of information, but none of them seemed to be helpful to me。 I either didn't have the exact problem their book was targeted at (eg PCOS, which I did no have) or their "strategies" didn't improve my cycle or bloodwork。 Audible recommended this book to me "based on my listening history" and initially I thought, "this isn't for me" but then I read some of the Amazon reviews---stories of women in their 40s who conceived 'naturally' after multiple rounds of failed IVF, or who, like me, had problems that couldn't be diagnosed, and they felt better so I thought it couldn't hurt to read this。 I am so glad I did! Because of all my previous reading, some of the information wasn't "new" to me, but plenty was and I appreciated how comprehensive and easy-to-understand this book is。 It's also polished and professional but not dry-academic。 I now own both the kindle AND the audio, which is rare for me。 ================= 。。。more

I definitely struggled to finish this but I'm happy I did。 I wasn't interested in the supplement information which is the majority of the book。 However, there was information that did help put my mind at ease。 It's a good book with scientific studies to back up the information。 This is not a book for people who are a bit of a hypochondriac as it may cause you to overthink your infertility even more。 I didn't hate this book but it just wasn't for me。 I definitely struggled to finish this but I'm happy I did。 I wasn't interested in the supplement information which is the majority of the book。 However, there was information that did help put my mind at ease。 It's a good book with scientific studies to back up the information。 This is not a book for people who are a bit of a hypochondriac as it may cause you to overthink your infertility even more。 I didn't hate this book but it just wasn't for me。 。。。more

This book was so helpful to me in understanding the science behind egg quality and giving me actionable steps to implement。 It somehow manages to both read like an academic article and be a page-turner。 A very empowering read that I would recommend to anyone curious about how to achieve better egg (and sperm) quality and improved overall health。

Very informative and the science behind infertility was very interesting。 The only reason this is 4 stars is because I was hoping for more (or any, honestly) information about endometriosis。 However if you suffer from PCOS or multiple miscarriages this would be extremely helpful。
