Summary

In the new Eve Dallas police thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author J。 D。 Robb, what looked like a lover's quarrel turned fatal has larger--and more terrifying--motives behind it。。。

The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wine glasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in。 But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don't add up。 Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body--but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?

As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder。 As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within--and soon they're getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a sinister, fanatical group and a stunning criminal conspiracy。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I think that in all 52 books this one made my top 15。 I was so good。 The scale of the operation to capture all the people was amazingly written in a way that made it anything less than boring。

The murder of Ariel Byrd leads Dallas and Peabody to Gwen Huffman, a socialite whose family is very high up in a wealthy, misogynistic, bigoted cult。 As they dig into the cult with their usual thoroughness, they uncover murder, abductions, forced pregnancies and more。 An excellent additon to this series。

More than once I found myself thinking, “THIS is why I love this series so much。” It’s easily one of my favorites。

Another winner。 I’m always so sad when I finish a JD Robb book。 As always, awesome characters and interaction between them。 I’m always hoping there will be more of Eve, Roark and Peabody。 And many others。

It's so good to come back home。This really felt like the OG books we got back in the day。 Intriguing case, personal developments explored and Roarke and Eve's wholesome moments。 It had it all。I don't remember the last time I was this into the investigation。 Usually, I'm not really here for the plot, but this case got me。 It was disturbing and infuriating, and cult stuff in general is so messed up but at the same time fascinating to read about。 Despite some of the scenes, I wouldn't call this a h It's so good to come back home。This really felt like the OG books we got back in the day。 Intriguing case, personal developments explored and Roarke and Eve's wholesome moments。 It had it all。I don't remember the last time I was this into the investigation。 Usually, I'm not really here for the plot, but this case got me。 It was disturbing and infuriating, and cult stuff in general is so messed up but at the same time fascinating to read about。 Despite some of the scenes, I wouldn't call this a hard hitting book, but it still had its moments。Like, abducting, raping and impregnating women。。。。Yikes。There was especially this one woman who was giving her statement and it was rough to even just read about it。 And I appreciate how graphic and honest these books tend to be, because more often than not, that's real life。The reason I'm saying this wasn't as hard hitting as some of the others, like, Visions and Creation, is because there weren't any personal stakes involved。If we go by what Nadine said, about making this the third book she would write in their universe, then this didn't have any of that action at the end of Origins, where Eve and Roarke almost got blown up or in Delusions where they were really close to getting the virus themselves。I still enjoyed it immensely, however, I believe it would have been better if someone had infiltrated the cult。 We kinda got that with the FBI agent but we didn't know him and we never really met him either。 He was already there and he needed to be saved among many others。The operation on getting into the compound was a bit too easy and without any glitch, which, unfortunately, didn't add any action。I definitely wish there would have been some personal plot involved。 Like, Eve going under cover and discovering all the creepy shit or something。I kinda hate that there are no real stakes for the characters。 They are never in any real danger anymore。 And I miss that。The impression I'm getting is that the author is playing it safe or putting out 4 books a year is starting to put a strain on her。 If that's the case, I would gladly wait a bit longer for the next one。With all that said, this did feel like one of the OG books and I have to give 5 stars for that alone。The part where Roarke got all exited about how he and Eve would have made a great team back in the thievery days in some alternative universes, really got me。 And her responding that she would be a cop in al of them (heart eyes) 。 No matter what happens and where this goes, they will forever be in my heart。P。S I'm surprised Eve hasn't been recruited by the FBI, CIA or Interpol at this point。 。。。more

Lots of action, good characters。 I like the way the women (both ruthless and oppressed) found ways to work for their freedom。 Somewhat ludicrous to think that Eve could get the NYPD, the FBI and Interpol all galvanized and acting according to her plan in less than 48 hours, but it's fiction。 A fun read。 Lots of action, good characters。 I like the way the women (both ruthless and oppressed) found ways to work for their freedom。 Somewhat ludicrous to think that Eve could get the NYPD, the FBI and Interpol all galvanized and acting according to her plan in less than 48 hours, but it's fiction。 A fun read。 。。。more

This was a really good addition to the series。 I loved the cooperation from so many people and the storyline with Mavis/Peabody etc。 was super cute。 The mystery itself seemed pretty simple at first but then it just started growing in complexity。 There were a few times I wanted to reach through the book and punch some assholes in the face。 I love how Roarke seems so comfortable now working as a consultant and even sometimes seems to like it more than his own job of ruling the corporate world。 I d This was a really good addition to the series。 I loved the cooperation from so many people and the storyline with Mavis/Peabody etc。 was super cute。 The mystery itself seemed pretty simple at first but then it just started growing in complexity。 There were a few times I wanted to reach through the book and punch some assholes in the face。 I love how Roarke seems so comfortable now working as a consultant and even sometimes seems to like it more than his own job of ruling the corporate world。 I do feel like the relationship between Eve and Roarke has gotten a little stale。 It’s almost like every scene between them is the same in each and every book。 I wish something would come along and shake them up a bit。 Or something to just change up their scenes a little。 In this one I feel like they were hardly together at all。 I guess after 52 books they could all start to be blending together but I just wish something would shake up。 Even if it was a dire situation with a friend in the inner circle, just something。I’ll definitely keep reading because this series and this world are one of my favorites。 。。。more
