This is the most comprehensive resource I have come across。 It is chock full of research based strategies to teach reading。 I refer to it often in my work as a literacy coach and as a tutor for early readers and older struggling readers。 If I was only aloud to keep one of my scores of books related to literacy instruction， this would be the one！

A useful compendium of all things related to elementary school reading--including decoding， syllabication， common letter patterns， spelling assessment （to determine developmental stage--I was able to see a number of my students reflected in the useful examples）， vocabulary development and word study， comprehension strategies （only the core ones） and text structures。 There are also sections and sample lessons for Directed Reading and Thinking， Question Answer Relationships， Questioning the Author A useful compendium of all things related to elementary school reading--including decoding， syllabication， common letter patterns， spelling assessment （to determine developmental stage--I was able to see a number of my students reflected in the useful examples）， vocabulary development and word study， comprehension strategies （only the core ones） and text structures。 There are also sections and sample lessons for Directed Reading and Thinking， Question Answer Relationships， Questioning the Author and more。 Notably absent is any discussion of Fountas and Pinnell's ubiquitous and increasingly disputed reading levels。 It's possible that more updated versions of Honig's text （which I was not able to get my hands on and which is just too expensive to buy） do address "leveling"。 I learned a lot from Honig's text。 There is much that is worthwhile here， even though this edition is now 16 years old。 。。。more
