Really enjoyed this book。 If you are interested in making films this is invaluable。 To have one of the great techincal directors of all time break down his whole process - including how he did his setups, camera and lens style, post production, all the good stuff! If you are not a filmmaker, but just interested in the history of hollywood and how a great director made his films, then this is ALSO for you。 In fact the stuff that I found less interesting (studio politics, some small gossip) might b Really enjoyed this book。 If you are interested in making films this is invaluable。 To have one of the great techincal directors of all time break down his whole process - including how he did his setups, camera and lens style, post production, all the good stuff! If you are not a filmmaker, but just interested in the history of hollywood and how a great director made his films, then this is ALSO for you。 In fact the stuff that I found less interesting (studio politics, some small gossip) might be even more interesting to the layman film folk。Sidney keeps it moving, keeps it entertaining, and keeps it informative。 。。。more

An incredible look into the process of movie-making, from conception to delivery, by an entertaining and engaging master of the craft。 A must-read for any film fan。

Lumet offers important and interesting information about the moviemaking process。 He used the filming of A Stranger Among Us as the example for much of the moviegoing process。 The film was a disaster and one of his worst films。 The book needed another chapter with Lumet talking about this because it calls into question some of what he writes。 He does talk about never knowing whether a film will be a success or a failure so the book should have included this information。 The book may have been fi Lumet offers important and interesting information about the moviemaking process。 He used the filming of A Stranger Among Us as the example for much of the moviegoing process。 The film was a disaster and one of his worst films。 The book needed another chapter with Lumet talking about this because it calls into question some of what he writes。 He does talk about never knowing whether a film will be a success or a failure so the book should have included this information。 The book may have been finished before the film's release, but it leaves a hole in the book。 。。。more

Nothing less than page after page of illumination and insight into how a great director learned and practised his craft。 You're reminded occasionally that he was working in a very different era (read: 'sexism'), so there's that to deal with, but overall it's just a terrific read。 I came away feeling I'd learned something about the movies。 Nothing less than page after page of illumination and insight into how a great director learned and practised his craft。 You're reminded occasionally that he was working in a very different era (read: 'sexism'), so there's that to deal with, but overall it's just a terrific read。 I came away feeling I'd learned something about the movies。 。。。more

Clear, step-by-step discussion of how to make a movie。 Doesn't matter if you like Lumet or his movies at all, he gives you the basics and some ideas of how these can be applied。 Short, almost breezy manual。 Clear, step-by-step discussion of how to make a movie。 Doesn't matter if you like Lumet or his movies at all, he gives you the basics and some ideas of how these can be applied。 Short, almost breezy manual。 。。。more

A detailed account of the life of a director。 Lumet is personable and eloquent。 Would recommend to fans of movies who have thought “what is the director of 12 Angry Men’s job like?”

Long Day's Journey Into Night"。 。。。more

A pleasant read that manages to balance being informative and entertaining quite beautifully。 It is not a text that a filmmaker should have at his side to help with technical problems and many a person reading it merely for entertainment will probably be bored by the numerous steps a production goes through that are described realistically and without much glamour attached。 But it is a great book for someone looking for some information on the process of filmmaking。 For someone interested in the A pleasant read that manages to balance being informative and entertaining quite beautifully。 It is not a text that a filmmaker should have at his side to help with technical problems and many a person reading it merely for entertainment will probably be bored by the numerous steps a production goes through that are described realistically and without much glamour attached。 But it is a great book for someone looking for some information on the process of filmmaking。 For someone interested in the processes of decisionmaking that lead to the films they love。 And most importantly, it is written by someone who loves and respects both his job and the people he works with。 I believe a great many wannabe directors could do with reading this, to be grounded in reality, that a great ego and unique vision is worth nothing without collaboration。 And a great many aspiring storytellers could do with reading this, to be reassured that their stories are worth telling, and that not every work will be a success, but every work will be worth the effort invested into it, in one way or another。 。。。more

4。5 Insightful and informative。 One of my favorite film-makers taking you along the film-making process and painting a picture of the intricacies and developments of storytelling。 Greatly enjoyed this。

Technically, this book has a lot of useful information。 Since it was published in 1995, it is a little outdated。 But I think the more important parts of directing such as understanding the film's true nature, bringing out the best performances in actors, and striving to make a truly good movie, still hold true。 Technically, this book has a lot of useful information。 Since it was published in 1995, it is a little outdated。 But I think the more important parts of directing such as understanding the film's true nature, bringing out the best performances in actors, and striving to make a truly good movie, still hold true。 。。。more

i love insider information。i love learning about people's creative processes。i love finding random books at the library i pick up for research and actually read cover-to-cover。some things have changed about the movie making process since the 1950's-1990's (uh, i don't think we have fuzzy cassettes messing up the orchestra track now when layering in multiple sound tracks?), but somethings don't change:"i think [sic] because movies are the only art form that uses people to record something that is i love insider information。i love learning about people's creative processes。i love finding random books at the library i pick up for research and actually read cover-to-cover。some things have changed about the movie making process since the 1950's-1990's (uh, i don't think we have fuzzy cassettes messing up the orchestra track now when layering in multiple sound tracks?), but somethings don't change:"i think [sic] because movies are the only art form that uses people to record something that is literally larger than life。""there are no small decisions in moviemaking。""preparation allows the 'lucky accident' that we're always hoping for to happen。""the important thing is that the interpretation by the director be committed enough so that his intention, his point of view, is clear。 each person is then free to agree, reject, or be awakened to his or her own feelings about the piece。 we're not out for consensus here。 we're out for communication。""my job is to care about and be responsible for every frame of every movie i make。" 。。。more

Suffers from a bit of aging in the terms of the technical elements discussed, but that didn't affect my rating as that isn't a fault of the book, rather a fault of the times。 Overall, I found this book to be a very thorough, but quick description of the process of making a film。 I didn't agree with some of Lumet's perceptions and opinions, but I found it really informative throughout and funny and moving at times。 Would recommend to anyone wanting to get a good overview of the filmmaking process Suffers from a bit of aging in the terms of the technical elements discussed, but that didn't affect my rating as that isn't a fault of the book, rather a fault of the times。 Overall, I found this book to be a very thorough, but quick description of the process of making a film。 I didn't agree with some of Lumet's perceptions and opinions, but I found it really informative throughout and funny and moving at times。 Would recommend to anyone wanting to get a good overview of the filmmaking process。 。。。more

MAKING MOVIES is a landmark in filmmaking Treatise。 It is conversational and elaborate。 One doesn't need to know filmmaking jargon to understand it。 It is for both novices and professionals and it is one book that has to be kept close to the filmmaker as a guide to the process of filmmaking。 It details Lumet's principles that made his movies stand out and these principles if objectively employed will add alot more dimension to one's movie and to one's films expressionism。It is a goldmine to all MAKING MOVIES is a landmark in filmmaking Treatise。 It is conversational and elaborate。 One doesn't need to know filmmaking jargon to understand it。 It is for both novices and professionals and it is one book that has to be kept close to the filmmaker as a guide to the process of filmmaking。 It details Lumet's principles that made his movies stand out and these principles if objectively employed will add alot more dimension to one's movie and to one's films expressionism。It is a goldmine to all serious filmmakers who come across it。 。。。more

A very simplistic overview of the filmmaking process that I probably would have appreciated more at sixth form, but still a very nice read! This was a real pleasure。 I admittedly skimmed a few of the more technical sections - which are also likely different now than when this was published 25ish years ago - but mostly loved the detail on the infinite complexities of the filmmaking process。 The main takeaway for me, which I’m pretty sure is what Lumet intended, is the need for collaboration and explosion of the pure director-auteur myth in a medium that is by necessity an act of collaboration between many many artists/technicians/etc This was a real pleasure。 I admittedly skimmed a few of the more technical sections - which are also likely different now than when this was published 25ish years ago - but mostly loved the detail on the infinite complexities of the filmmaking process。 The main takeaway for me, which I’m pretty sure is what Lumet intended, is the need for collaboration and explosion of the pure director-auteur myth in a medium that is by necessity an act of collaboration between many many artists/technicians/etc。 Scratched a similar itch to Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential in its paradoxical reveling in the mechanics of a world as a way of getting to that world’s magic。 。。。more

This book provides a great look on the workflow of filmmakers。 Of course the methods it describes is outdates, but I personally do not think this is a book meant to describe methods。 What I took away from this book is the importance of teamwork。
