Summary

Cybernetics (loosely translated from the Greek): “a helmsman who steers his ship to port。” Psycho-Cybernetics is a term coined by Dr。 Maxwell Maltz, which means, “steering your mind to a productive, useful goal so you can reach the greatest port in the world, peace of mind。”

Since its first publication in 1960, Maltz’s landmark bestseller has inspired and enhanced the lives of more than 30 million readers。 In this updated edition, with a new introduction and editorial commentary by Matt Furey, president of the Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation, the original text has been annotated and amplified to make Maltz’s message even more relevant for the contemporary reader。

“Before the mind can work efficiently, we must develop our perception of the outcomes we expect to reach。 Maxwell Maltz calls this Psycho-Cybernetics; when the mind has a defined target it can focus and direct and refocus and redirect until it reaches its intended goal。” —Tony Robbins (from Unlimited Power)

Maltz was the first researcher and author to explain how the self-image (a term he popularized) has complete control over an individual’s ability to achieve (or fail to achieve) any goal。 And he developed techniques for improving and managing self-image—visualization, mental rehearsal, relaxation—which have informed and inspired countless motivational gurus, sports psychologists, and self-help practitioners for more than fifty years。

The teachings of Psycho-Cybernetics are timeless because they are based on solid science and provide a prescription for thinking and acting that lead to quantifiable results。

Psycho-Cybernetics, written by the surgeon Dr。 Maxwell Maltz, can help you。 It can help anyone who takes the time to go through this book。 Even though it was published in the 1960s, a lot of the info and thoughts presented feel strangely progressive, are most certainly beneficial and are not too difficult to follow and implement。 It just felt like a bit of a slog getting through the book, honestly。 I honestly didn’t think I was going to like this book at all。 However, Maltz has an optimism about Psycho-Cybernetics, written by the surgeon Dr。 Maxwell Maltz, can help you。 It can help anyone who takes the time to go through this book。 Even though it was published in the 1960s, a lot of the info and thoughts presented feel strangely progressive, are most certainly beneficial and are not too difficult to follow and implement。 It just felt like a bit of a slog getting through the book, honestly。 I honestly didn’t think I was going to like this book at all。 However, Maltz has an optimism about him and the way he presents his ideas are relatively straightforward and littered with (many) anecdotes to back him up。 His main point revolves around self-image and how you frame things。 Framing is certainly nothing new; e。g。 “I failed that test” vs。 “I am a failure”。 It makes sense for him also to think critically about self-image because he was a leading plastic surgeon。 For example, early in the book he says, “When a facial disfigurement is corrected by plastic surgery, dramatic psychological changes result ONLY if there is a corresponding correction of the mutilated self-image”。 In other words, you’re not going to feel good about your new changed body or face unless you change your personal perspective on your own self-image。 Self-image is key, and how you perceive yourself in the world around you matters way more than your physical exterior (and how others view you)。 There are a lot of other well-meaning points Maltz makes。 For example, going along with the idea that your perspective on things is everything, he said, “Men are disturbed, not by things that happen, but by their opinions of the things that happen”。 As mentioned earlier, Psycho-Cybernetics was published in the early 1960s。 Quite a long time ago。 It’s certainly interesting to see what the bleeding edge of science and psychology was like in the 1960s。 On one hand it felt like the 60s。 For example, there was a part of a chapter outlining some of the benefits of tranquilizers for people (which made me think of the early scenes of the Queen’s Gambit)。 But a few pages later in the same chapter, Maltz discusses how important breaks are for our physical and mental well being。 How yearly vacations are necessary for most people and how it’s alright to temporarily retreat when there’s overloading stimuli in your life (which reminds me of how, at least at my workplace, you’re encouraged to take vacations and mental health days)。 I wonder what Maltz would write now, and I’m curious what his thoughts would be on modern beauty standards and especially how social media has affected body image and self-esteem。A negative I would give to Psycho-Cybernetics is how it’s filled to the brim with anecdotes。 A lot of the times they can feel a bit far-fetched and unrealistic just to illustrate a point - sort of along the lines of “a patient of mine had crippling depression, but I told him to follow my specific steps in the power of positive thinking, and within a month he not only was not depressed anymore, but he also tripled his bank account and found the love of his life”。 A good 30% of the book is just these made-up anecdotes/examples。 For people who are interested in this book or are looking further in the self-help genre, I would personally recommend checking out Arthur Brooks, a Harvard professor and a leading researcher on happiness。 He has published some books, but I would mainly recommend his podcast (The Art of Happiness with Arthur Brooks), as well as his “To Build a Life” article series in the Atlantic (the articles “Are You Dreaming Too Big?” Or “New Year’s Resolutions That Will Actually Lead to Happiness” are a good place to start)。 He provides a more modern spin on some of the ideas in the book, but he makes it much more digestible。 I read this relatively obscure book from a friend’s recommendation。 He said it has completely changed his thinking and his way of life。 I can honestly see how it can。 There’s a lot of good ideas and ways to be happy and let go of the negative parts of your life。 For someone who is a downer and negative and is too much in their head too often, this can be a great book to read, because it’ll help you realize just how harmful that way of living is, and how shifting your mindset is ultimately the way to go。 For those types of people, I would recommend this book for sure。 Anyone can benefit from the ideas presented by Maltz。 Overall, Psycho-Cybernetics was a decent read。 It probably won’t change your life in particular, but it does have some good ideas and strategies to follow。 3 / 5。 。。。more

🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences1。 Dr。 Maltz presents the idea of your subconscious mind acting as what he calls your "Success Mechanism"; Present it with "success/positive goals" and it functions successfully, but present it with negative goals/mindset and it operates just as impersonally, and just as faithfully, as a Failure Mechanism。2。 Take a step back and focus on building your self-image; by doing so you directly change your habits as your self-image and habits go hand-in-hand。 By taking a step 🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences1。 Dr。 Maltz presents the idea of your subconscious mind acting as what he calls your "Success Mechanism"; Present it with "success/positive goals" and it functions successfully, but present it with negative goals/mindset and it operates just as impersonally, and just as faithfully, as a Failure Mechanism。2。 Take a step back and focus on building your self-image; by doing so you directly change your habits as your self-image and habits go hand-in-hand。 By taking a step back and letting your "Success Mechanism" guide you towards your goals you are able to acquire a "Success-Type" personality。3。 It is a lifetime journey trying to unlock and maintain your "real personality" but it is the day by day, moment by moment actions towards bringing peace to your mind and creating opportunity throughout your life that will truly make the difference。🎨 Impressions-This book was quite similar in the ideology behind your Subconscious Mind as it was in [The Power of Your Subconscious Mind](https://www。notion。so/The-Power-of-Yo。。。) but I found it dove a bit deeper into the possibilities and strategies on how to truly utilize it。 -The notion that Dr。 Maltz presents within your "Success Mechanism" was a very interesting and understanding ideology in the sense that your subconscious mind is always working and it is up to you to utilize it by implementing positive goals for it to work towards for you。 This is explained by the following:### Discovering the Success Mechanism1。 Your built-in Success Mechanism must have a goal or target。 This goal or target must be conceived of as "Already in existence—now" either in actual or potential form。2。 Supply the goal and your mechanism will supply the "how"。 Think in terms of the end result, and the means whereby will often take care of themselves。3。 Don't be afraid of making mistakes or temporary failures。4。 Skill learning of any kind is done by trial and error, mentally correcting aim after an error。 "Forget the past errors, and remember the successful response。5。 Trust your Creative Mechanism to do its work and not "jam it" by becoming too concerned or too anxious as to whether it will work or not。-Your mind is a hugely powerful thing and the majority of the time is severely underutilized。 When it is utilized it can do amazing things。 Such as the fact that "Visualization" within the sport can nearly mimic the results of actually physically practicing。 -The inferiority complex is also quite interesting how people perceive themselves。**Inferiority Complex**-The feeling that you are inferior to other people and that you are never good enough to measure up to others。 This is common among all people feeling as though they don't belong or aren't good enough。 The moment you compare yourself to others is the moment you lose sight of what you should be truly striving for; a better you, in comparison to only you of yesterday。 If you are making progress in bettering yourself that is all you can ever ask for。 Like James Clear states in [Atomic Habits](https://www。notion。so/Atomic-Habits-5。。。) of striving to be 1% better each day。-When setting goals remember that most of the time you will be in "Journey Mode" thus focusing on the process and actions you need to take to get there。 Focus on the journey most of the time and occasionally (once or twice daily) tune into that end goal。 Then turn back to your journey and let your subconscious guide you there。 -Failures are a necessary step in all learning and growth。 You should never dwell on the mistakes of the past。 Learn from them and then move on。-When setting goals remember that most of the time you will be in "Journey Mode" thus focusing on the process and actions you need to take to get there。 Focus on the journey most of the time and occasionally (once or twice daily) tune into that end goal。 Then turn back to your journey and let your subconscious guide you there。 ### Five Rules For Freeing Your Creative Machinery1。 Do your worrying before you place your bet, Not after the wheel starts turning。2。 Form the habit of consciously responding to the present moment3。 Try to do only one thing at a time4。 Sleep on it5。 Relax While you work-Our self-image and our habits tend to go together。 Change one and you will automatically change the other。 We have habits because they fit us。 Change your self-image and those previous habits no longer fit。 ### Ingredients of the "Success-Type" Personality and How to Acquire Them-The Picture of Success**S**ense of Direction- Have a goal worth working towards**U**nderstanding-Seek true information about yourself and others regardless if it is good news or bad**C**ourage- Be willing to make mistakes and suffer a bit to get to where you want to be**C**ompassion- Develop a genuine appreciation for all people **E**steem- Work on building your self-image positively**S**elf-Confidence- Use mistakes and errors as a way to learn。 Don't dwell on failures**S**elf-Acceptance- Accept yourself as you are。### The Failure Mechanism: How to Make It Work for You Instead of Against You**The Picture of Failure:****F**rustration, hopelessness, futility**A**ggressiveness (misdirected)**I**nsecurity**L**oneliness**U**ncertainty**R**esentment**E**mptiness-Trying to stand on top of a pinnacle/peak in your life is insecure。 Never settle at reaching your goals。 Reevaluate and achieve the next goals。 Mentally, get down off your high horse and you will feel more secure。-The greatest mistake a man can make is to be afraid of making one。 (Elbert Hubbard)-Big men and big personalities make mistakes and admit them。 It is the little man who is afraid to admit he has been wrong。-Glance at the negatives, but focus on the positives。 Acknowledge that the negatives are there but do not dwell on them。 They are bound to come up but there is no reason that you can't deal with them as they come。 You simply need to keep your overall gaze above and beyond the negatives and focus on the goals you are striving towards。### Do-It-Yourself Tranquilizers That Bring Peace of Mind❗️**Your own Decompression Chamber** ❗️-Each person needs a quiet room inside his own mind。 Find and create that quiet room for yourself to be able to go there whenever you need a moment to recollect yourself or truly relax。 Furnish it with whatever is most restful and refreshing。 The colours of the wall should be your favourite "Pleasant" colours such as blues, light green, yellow, and gold。 Simplicity, quietness, beauty are the keynotes。### How to Turn a Crisis into a Creative Opportunity-It is all about how people learned to react to crisis situations to turn them successful。1。 Practice without Pressure- Although we may learn fast, we do not learn well under crisis conditions。 If the motivation is not too intense, if there is not too much of a crisis present in the learning situation then you are able to form "brain maps" and "cognitive maps" of the environment。2。 Crisis Brings Power- When we face danger, then courage comes; when trial puts a long-continued strain upon us, we find ourselves possessed by the power to endure; or when disaster ultimately brings the fall to which we s long-dreaded we feel underneath us the strength as of everlasting arms。3。 What is the Worst That Can Possibly Happen?- Don't make mountains out of molehills。 When you realize that the worst outcome really isn't that bad you will find a new wind within to make it successful。### How to Get That Winning Feeling-**Think in terms of possibilities**。 You must supply the goal。 And to supply a goal capable of activating your creative mechanism。 you must think of the end result in terms of a present possibility。 The possibility of the goal must be seen so clearly that it becomes "real"。-**Setting Your Machinery for Success** - Call up, capture, evoke the feeling of success。 When you feel successful and self-confident, you will act successfully。 When the feeling is strong, you can literally do no wrong。 -**Play Back Your Own Built-In Success Patterns** - Go back in memory and relive those successful experiences。 In your imagination revive the entire picture in as much detail as you can。**Don't Take Counsel of Your Fears** - If you do experience negative failure feelings—fear and anxiety— before an undertaking, it should not be taken as a "sure sign" that you will fail。 It all depends on how you react to them。 ☘️ How the Book Changed Me- It made me dive even deeper into the subconscious mind and how it operates。 After reading [The Power of Your Subconscious Mind](https://www。notion。so/The-Power-of-Yo。。。) this gave me an even more well-rounded idea of how to make your subconscious even more efficient。- Solidified my belief of making sure to focus on the more "Positive" goals and to let your "Success Mechanism" take over in the sense of putting you on the right path towards those。- Re-instated the fact to never judge yourself against other people as the moment you do, you lose the race。 You immediately compare everything you can think of and that is never the road you want to take mentally。 After everything is said and done, you are the only one you want to compare yourself to。 This has allowed me to truly take a step back and only focus on building myself day by day。- Has further ingrained the enjoyment of the "Journey" to where you want to be rather than just focusing on the idea of how happy and accomplished you will be when you achieve it。 This has further pushed me to really focus on the little things daily rather than focusing on the bigger picture too often。- Really enjoyed his explanation of the "Success-Type" personality and has really pushed me further to break it down into simple steps to get to where I want to be。- I have been able to vastly minimize my "dwelling" on the negatives that come up and by doing so things always seem to be moving in the correct direction without wasting my time on dwelling on certain setbacks。 ✍️ My Top Quotes- "Your nervous system cannot tell the difference between an imagined experience and a real experience。 In either case, it reacts automatically to information that you give to it from your forebrain。 Your nervous system reacts appropriately to what you think or imagine to be true。" (Pg。 37)- "The torpedo accomplishes its goal by going forward, making errors, and continually correcting them。 By a series of zigzags it literally gropes its way to the goal。" (Pg。 23)- "The truth about you is this: You are not "Inferior" You are not "superior" You are simply "You。" "You as a personality are not in competition with any other personality simply because there is not another person on the face of the earth like you, or in your particular class。 You are an individual。 You are unique。" (Pg。64)- "The unhappiest of mortals is that man who insists on reliving the past, over and over in imagination—continually criticizing himself for past mistakes—continually condemning himself for past sins。" (Pg。 75)- "Consciously practice the habit of "taking no anxious thoughts for tomorrow," by giving all your attention to the present moment。 Your Creative Mechanism cannot function or work tomorrow。 It can only function in the present—today。 Make long-range plans for tomorrow。 But don't try to live in tomorrow, or in the past。" (Pg。 98)- "Our self-image and our habits tend to go together。 Change one and you will automatically change the other。 We have habits because they fit us。 Change your self-image and those previous habits no longer fit。" (Pg。 120)- "Get yourself a goal worth working for。 Better still, get yourself a project。 Decide what you want out of a situation。 Always have something ahead of you to "look forward to" — to work for and hope for。 Look forward, not backward。" (Pg。128)- "It doesn't matter how many times you have failed in the past。 What matters is the successful attempt, which should be remembered, reinforced, and dwelt upon。" (Pg。137)- "Use self-esteem for yourself, instead of against yourself, by convincing yourself of this truth: Big men and big personalities make mistakes and Generally quite good。 First 6 chapters were especially helpful and interesting。 The second half of the book didn't resonate with me as much。 Perhaps because it reminded me too much of Dale Carnegie's work (which is not bad at all), but probably because I already read most of it many times。 I believe this part also aged much worse。 Overall I recommend this to anyone who liked Dale Carnegie and Robbins' Awaken the Giant within。 Generally quite good。 First 6 chapters were especially helpful and interesting。 The second half of the book didn't resonate with me as much。 Perhaps because it reminded me too much of Dale Carnegie's work (which is not bad at all), but probably because I already read most of it many times。 I believe this part also aged much worse。 Overall I recommend this to anyone who liked Dale Carnegie and Robbins' Awaken the Giant within。 。。。more

Chapter 2 was my biggest takeaway from this book。 There’s some other powerful lessons in it but they are things I had read about already from other authors, such as Brené Brown。 This book was clearly written in the 1950’s by a white male for a white male audience。 Throughout the book the author uses male pronouns exclusively when describing hypothetical scenarios。 This could be easily fixed with editing。 Also, every example presented of an actual real life case has men as professionals and women Chapter 2 was my biggest takeaway from this book。 There’s some other powerful lessons in it but they are things I had read about already from other authors, such as Brené Brown。 This book was clearly written in the 1950’s by a white male for a white male audience。 Throughout the book the author uses male pronouns exclusively when describing hypothetical scenarios。 This could be easily fixed with editing。 Also, every example presented of an actual real life case has men as professionals and women as housewives or some sort of non-professional role。 Again, this could be corrected with editing and updating these stories。 The book should also be updated on pages 173-174 to reflect the reality of women/minorities。 While I agree with the premise that how we react to something and how we feel about something is our choice, that does not mean that we should put up with certain behaviors that are damaging (like racist/sexist comments/actions/behaviors) The original author talks about “relaxing emotional hurt” but doesn’t offer much insight beyond ‘lighten up’ and ‘don’t take everything so seriously’, a message that sounds pretty ignorant and tone deaf。 Again, it’s very obvious that this book was written in the 1950’s and could be easily updated to be more inclusive so that its core message doesn’t get lost。 Oh, and I also could’ve done without all the god stuff。 。。。more

Self beliefs steer our lives。 The way we interpret reality forms our beliefs。 Our imaginations determine our actions。 Your mind doesn't differentiate between what is true and what is not true。 So what you tell yourself on a daily basis becomes your reality。 This book gives wonderful strategies on how to stop sabotaging your thoughts in order to live your best life。 Powerful read and should be read many times。 Self beliefs steer our lives。 The way we interpret reality forms our beliefs。 Our imaginations determine our actions。 Your mind doesn't differentiate between what is true and what is not true。 So what you tell yourself on a daily basis becomes your reality。 This book gives wonderful strategies on how to stop sabotaging your thoughts in order to live your best life。 Powerful read and should be read many times。 。。。more

I felt that there was too much repetition in this book。 The concept of self image and psycho cybernetics is really interesting but since the author kept repeating the same thing over and over again I got bored reading the last two chapters。 However I need to mention that the message is clear and pretty straightforward and overall I would consider this to be a good read!

Probably the only self-help book one has to read in their lifetime, especially if one is suffering from low self-esteem。
