Summary

In this lyrical, exuberant follow-up to her novel The Bastard of Istanbul, acclaimed Turkish author Elif Shafak incarnates Rumi's timeless message of love

The Forty Rules of Love unfolds two tantalizing parallel narratives--one contemporary and the other set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the whirling dervish known as Shams of Tabriz--that together explore the enduring power of Rumi's work。

Ella Rubenstein is forty years old and unhappily married when she takes a job as a reader for a literary agent。 Her first assignment is to read and report on Sweet Blasphemy, a novel written by a man named Aziz Zahara。 Ella is mesmerized by his tale of Shams's search for Rumi and the dervish's role in transforming the successful but unhappy cleric into a committed mystic, passionate poet, and advocate of love。 She is also taken with Shams's lessons, or rules, that offer insight into an ancient philosophy based on the unity of all people and religions, and the presence of love in each and every one of us。 As she reads on, she realizes that Rumi's story mirrors her own and that Zahara--like Shams--has come to set her free。

'The Forty Rules of Love' discusses the themes of mysticism and spiritual love。 Elif Shafak adopts a postmodern technique of embedding two narratives that mirror each other。 Each narrative represents one context and a particular culture- it's like bringing the East and the West together。 One narrative is about Ella who is married with three children but she hasn't been happy for a while now (though, she failed to note her unhappiness at the beginning)。 As she undertakes the job of a literary age 'The Forty Rules of Love' discusses the themes of mysticism and spiritual love。 Elif Shafak adopts a postmodern technique of embedding two narratives that mirror each other。 Each narrative represents one context and a particular culture- it's like bringing the East and the West together。 One narrative is about Ella who is married with three children but she hasn't been happy for a while now (though, she failed to note her unhappiness at the beginning)。 As she undertakes the job of a literary agent, she discovers a book called 'Sweet Blasphemy。' The book is the second narrative。 'Sweet Blasphemy' tells the story of Shams of Tabriz, a Sufi master who engages in a journey to guide Rumi, the poet。 The book juxtaposes the love story between Ella and Aziz against the backdrop of an ancient tale of the bond between Rumi and Shams of Tabriz。 The book is told through the voices of many narrators。 It is divided into five parts: Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and the Void- the five elements that constitute the universe。'The Forty Rules of Love' or 'The Forty Rules of the Religion of Love' is believed to be universal and can be attained "through love and love only。" These rules are scattered like gems, hidden in common conversations between Shams, Rumi and the people who cross their path。 Forty is claimed to be a special number as argued by Aziz, "Forty is a most beautiful age for both men and women。 Did you know that in mystic thought forty symbolises the ascent from one level to a higher one and spiritual awakening? When we mourn we mourn for forty days。 When a baby is born it takes forty days for him to get ready to start life on earth。 And when we are in love we need to wait for forty days to be sure of our feelings。"All in all, the forty rules themselves are spell-binding in their timeless beauty and relevance。 This book takes Ella's journey as an example to finding greater meaning in life and that would be love。 We are always so caught up in our own little world and daily routine that we end up settling for less。 Life becomes monotonous and we end up forgetting to live in the now。 The book encourages us to live for ourselves, to be more aware of our own identity, and to be more accepting of our true self。 Another factor that I really liked about 'The Forty Rules of Love' is that though the title might seem to suggest that this is a book that is going to teach you all about love and what not, yet it doesn't provide any solutions with regards to love。 Rather, as Rumi says, "Love cannot be explained。 It can only be experienced。 Love cannot be explained, yet it explains all。" This is a book that has to be experienced, rather than simply read。 I absolutely loved reading this book and I'm looking forward to read more of Shafak。 。。。more

'Forty rules of love' written by Elif shafak a french born turkish author tries to convey the islamic mystical tradition- Sufism through two modern people。 Aziz zahara who turned into sufism and Ella Rubinstein an american woman。Ella is an unhappy woman troubled by the affairs of her husband and deprived of true love。 She has a literature background but couldn't establish a firm career because of the hurdles of being a homemaker。 Ella gets to know about Aziz as a part of her job as an editor for 'Forty rules of love' written by Elif shafak a french born turkish author tries to convey the islamic mystical tradition- Sufism through two modern people。 Aziz zahara who turned into sufism and Ella Rubinstein an american woman。Ella is an unhappy woman troubled by the affairs of her husband and deprived of true love。 She has a literature background but couldn't establish a firm career because of the hurdles of being a homemaker。 Ella gets to know about Aziz as a part of her job as an editor for reviewing his book。 The book revolves around the two true true companions and also known as the pillars of sufism; Jalaludhin Rumi and Shamz of Tabriz。 Their friendship is indeed an incredible one。 Shamz spreads light in the life of Rumi and guides him from therein。 He teaches him to abstain from all the worldly affairs and thus perceiving only the love for God through his great forty rules。 It is also Shamz who transforms him from the great scholar to a mystic poet hidden inside Rumi。 The light of this beautiful friendship reflects its light upon Ella and thus paving way toward her friendship with Aziz。 The book talks through different perspectives, sometimes through Shamz,Rumi or even through the peasant and the prostitute。We can't judge another person through our own eyes only。 Neither every person's life is same nor the circumstances that made them what they are today。 So to be kind, to understand others and only reflect love should be the virtues of our life。 Indeed this book fills our soul with words that are delicate yet powerful enough to echo through our vacant hearts。 As a believer of Islam, even though I do not agree to sufism and how they romanticize everything, yet this book is filled with a number of life lessons one should know and it is a masterpiece! 。。。more

It reads like a book written to sell in the Western world and looking at how popular this book is, I'd say the plan worked just right。 It is superficial book, written quite conveniently taking too much creative liberty。 If you think this book will tell you anything about Rumi, mysticism, spiritualism, Sufism then don't read it。 The parallel plot in the book about Ella & Aziz was a cliché- almost script of a Hollywood romantic movie。 The plot about Rumi and Shams has a great built up but very lit It reads like a book written to sell in the Western world and looking at how popular this book is, I'd say the plan worked just right。 It is superficial book, written quite conveniently taking too much creative liberty。 If you think this book will tell you anything about Rumi, mysticism, spiritualism, Sufism then don't read it。 The parallel plot in the book about Ella & Aziz was a cliché- almost script of a Hollywood romantic movie。 The plot about Rumi and Shams has a great built up but very little substance to it。 Its not a terrible book though, it has its high points too-The narrative style I liked very much, how each chapter is from a different POV。 There are the 40 rules of love in the book, which even though did not come through to me personally, but many people seem to have connected to them a lot。 And if nothing else, the book did inspire some interest in me to read more on Sufism and Rumi。 Also to the book's credit it was a very easy read。 Even though it wasn't too interesting, it wasn't a drag either。 That is a compliment, given how long the book is。 Fun fact- there is an uncanny resemblance to the main plot of Shams & Rumi with the plot and treatment of Satya & Bhikumatre (2 protagonists from one the greatest Indian movie- Satya)。 In both the cases Rumi/Bhiku are the lead protagonists, but in the story we see/read Satya/Shams are the driving force of the narrative。 I once heard RGV say that with Satya he wanted to bring Howard Roark (from The Fountainhead) to the underworld。 I wonder if he knows about this resemblance。 。。。more
