Summary

From the New York Times and internationally bestselling authors of The Illuminae Files comes a new science fiction epic。。。

It's 2380 and the graduating students of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions。 Tyler Jones has been a star pupil who hopes to recruit the squad of his dreams but ends up with a mixed and volatile crew。

And Ty's squad isn't even his biggest problem that'd be Aurora Jie-Lin O'Malley, the girl he's just rescued from interdimensional space。 Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth。 But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler's squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy。

Vividly told in the seven voices of the team members, this is fast-paced, action-packed, wickedly humorous and fabulously entertaining。 Described by one online fan as 'a mystery with tons of action。 A kind of thriller on steroids with a fantasy feel。'

A solid four stars!! Maybe 3。5? The crew was so fun and awesome, the world building was pretty cool and I really enjoyed it。 Personally I could do with more team building, and there was a moment in the middle it got really slow and a little boring but it picked back up soon。 Would definitely recommend it for sci-fi and fantasy lovers, especially if you like a cast。 I think, again, it was a little hard to stay on and I felt like I wasn’t as invested as I could’ve been? This book is so good。 Funny and smart and mysterious and heartbreaking。 I loved every minute of it。 I can’t believe I never picked it up before。 I’m heartbroken and I need more。 I need the next book。 I need more of Squad 312。 This is a new favorite。 I’m SO glad I read it。 10/10 would recommend。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The authors first trilogy, The Illuminae Files, will always have a special place in my heart。 However, my one critique of that series was that is started out a fairly slow and it didn’t get really good until the end of the 1st book。 That’s a shame, because book 2 & 3 were fantastic, and I’m guessing some people didn’t make it that far before dropping it (I know I almost did)。 That mistake was not repeated with this series! I have had my eye on Amie Kaufman and on Jay Kristoff since Illuminae。。。 Not disappointed AT ALL in The Aurora Cycle。 Exciting and action-packed, it leaves me wanting more to do with Squad 312 - the squad of misfits who might just fit together。 I have had my eye on Amie Kaufman and on Jay Kristoff since Illuminae。。。 Not disappointed AT ALL in The Aurora Cycle。 Exciting and action-packed, it leaves me wanting more to do with Squad 312 - the squad of misfits who might just fit together。 。。。more

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Space OperaContent Warning: (mild) Explicit language, violence。Ever since this year started,  I Haven't been able to read a page-turner book。 Okay, I did read some like Goddess in The Machine and Sky Beyond The Storm but what I mean is that I haven't read a book that's interesting enough to read in one sitting/ couple of days。 Aurora Rising is the first one to do that。I'll admit that it's not the most original book (kind of like The Expanse, Firefly and some Genre: YA, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Space OperaContent Warning: (mild) Explicit language, violence。Ever since this year started,  I Haven't been able to read a page-turner book。 Okay, I did read some like Goddess in The Machine and Sky Beyond The Storm but what I mean is that I haven't read a book that's interesting enough to read in one sitting/ couple of days。 Aurora Rising is the first one to do that。I'll admit that it's not the most original book (kind of like The Expanse, Firefly and some say Six of Crows。) but IT。IS。WILD!!! I enjoyed it thoroughly!!I do have a couple of problems with it, though。1: The characters (mostly Finnian)  joke about EVERYTHING SINGLE THING!! And, He doesn't care what situation they are in, whether they're about die or just survived a terrible attack, Finnian ALWAYS comes up with a joke。 Super annoying!! 2: 7 POVs!!! (Kind of like the Firefly book I read, it had six POVS and some just felt unnecessary) 7 POVS = Less screen (book?) time = not much depth to the characters。 :/ That being said, I enjoyed Aurora, Kal,  Tyler and Scarlet 's POVS。I actually liked Aurora with Tyler rather than KalConclusion: READ IT!!!!!! If you enjoyed Firefly, The Expanse or even Cinder, give it a try。 It's fun! 。。。more

She’s described so, so cool, and I really wish she was honed into a wonderful badass, but it was such a disappointing bust。 4。 “Let’s have a male leader and call him “Alpha。” I’m sorry, no。 Also, why do we have to mention his looks and smile all the time。 Please calm down。 5。 Continuing that, why does everyone have sharp facial features? And why is everyone’s smile so pretty? 6。 The multi-POV was so extra。 All of their inner thoughts sounded the same。 Same tone, jokes, etc。 The whole thing could easily be narrated by one person in exactly the way it is written now。 7。 And my biggest problem of all:THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THIS BOOK AND STARGATE: ATLANTIS#1: Alien, long haired, quiet, not so good with people, muscle。Ronon Dex from Atlantis, Kal from Aurora Rising (AR) #2: Good looking, charismatic leader。 (Common trope, but fits in my complaint)。John Sheppard from Atlantis, Tyler from AR#3: Girl built for more, has external purpose, spent after using “powers”Teyla in Atlantis, Aurora from AR#4: Super genius technician。 Rude, insulting, arrogant。 Mostly rude to hide own insecurities。Rodney McKay in Atlantis, Finian in AR#5: “Wraith” shipAre you joking?#6: The planet’s “gate”Again, seriously?#7: “Puddle-jumper” For the love of。。。#8: Pretty, civil diplomat, who could be tough when neededElizabeth in Atlantis, Scarlett in AR (bit of a stretch, this one)#9: (Another stretch) The whole Aurora thingAurora class warships in Atlantis, the whole Aurora theme in ARCat and Zila seem to be the only outcasts from this list。 Cat’s personality is basically non existent, and Zila is awesome but underused。 Oh, and why are we always “silence-moding” Magellan。 Why give the thing to Auri if you never want it to speak? So, again, I don’t know what to rate this book。 I’m putting down a two at this point because I’m conflicted。 I don’t even know if I want to continue reading it。 Part of me does, part of me doesn’t。 I will not be purchasing these at any point however。 Will solely be confined to library borrowed books。 I expected more from this :( 。。。more

It must be said that Sci-Fi is not my first choice of reads, so I bought this book with the hope that it’s worth the hype it’s given。 And it most definitely was。 We start off with our first main character (saying first because he shares the spotlight with the other just as wonderful characters in this book) seemingly on an unauthorized rescue mission in a vessel that’s been lost in the “Fold” of space for centuries。 His mission: a girl, the sole survivor on this drifting hunk of metal。 And this It must be said that Sci-Fi is not my first choice of reads, so I bought this book with the hope that it’s worth the hype it’s given。 And it most definitely was。 We start off with our first main character (saying first because he shares the spotlight with the other just as wonderful characters in this book) seemingly on an unauthorized rescue mission in a vessel that’s been lost in the “Fold” of space for centuries。 His mission: a girl, the sole survivor on this drifting hunk of metal。 And this girl is the catalyst to the events that very quickly unfold in Aurora Rising。It was LITERALLY a jaw dropping read。 I had to put the book down several times to flail my arms around distressingly or stare at a wall for a bit。 It’s witty, exciting, there’s things to love and hate (good hate)。 The characters are unique and good at what they do。 If I sat here and wrote a summary on every single character this would just be too long, but I really, really, want to。 The plot itself is eye catching and a bit unexpected in the direction it takes, and every chapter leaves you holding your breath。I guess if I had to find a flaw, it would the pacing isn’t really my taste。 But that’s not worth giving this less than 5 stars。 。。。more

Well, that wasn’t。。。。。 expected。 Okay, so it’s easy to point out that i really enjoined this book that I finished it in two nights, but lets just dwell a little on why I enjoyed it。 So here we go。 - Sarcasm, the one and only thing that could make me go from completely hating a book to falling in love with it。 - A spicy love triangle, well not exactly a triangle in this case but whatever。 - A sharp jaw line with a deadly look and a dark backstory, uhh someone call an ambulance? I know it’s fiction but not like this??? Anyways, there are things that help me get through this stuff, thank goodness。 Tbh, I thought this book was gonna be so bad that I wouldn’t finish it but here we are。 I started the second book too so that’s a sign。 Obviously Kal is my favorite so far and if something happens to him, though I don’t know who lost their mind to even try, I will continue reading but with a frown and a bunch of curse words every time I turn a page。 I warned you。 I can be deadly sometimes too。 Soooo, guess that’s it, I’m gonna go back to reading and maybe skipping to Kal’s chapters too, who knows。 Expect the unexpected。 。。。more

This book。。。I can't even begin to describe how much I loved it。 The characters, the sarcasm, the plot, the twists--everything was honestly amazing。The characters felt like realistic teenagers, and they were written so well that I was surprised a teenager didn't write them。 The relationships and banter between the group worked well with the story and added humour, which isn't often included in sci-fi or fantasy novels very much。 I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter, and I loved every aspect of it。T This book。。。I can't even begin to describe how much I loved it。 The characters, the sarcasm, the plot, the twists--everything was honestly amazing。The characters felt like realistic teenagers, and they were written so well that I was surprised a teenager didn't write them。 The relationships and banter between the group worked well with the story and added humour, which isn't often included in sci-fi or fantasy novels very much。 I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter, and I loved every aspect of it。The story was paced really well and the development was there for everything to make sense--except for the things that are supposed to stay a mystery, which I really liked。 The writing style was really good, and it made for an easy read without losing any of the complexity of the worldbuilding or development。I 100% recommend this book to anyone who loves YA sci-fi or fantasy, and to anyone looking for a group of teenagers bumbling through the galaxy in the most entertaining way。 Literally the only thing keeping this book from being 5 stars is that I felt it was jusssst shy of meeting my wildly high expectations for 5 star books。 。。。more

Okay。 I really really wanted to love this。 Truly。 I had several (many) issues。 I could have probably grit my teeth through a few, but once they started piling up, it became a burden。 The main issue was the entire concept/conflict- this felt familiar, not in a good way。 Iluminae series vs the Aurora series had several roles that seemed interchangeable。。。 Ragtag crew with a quirky token disabled tech person? Double check on this one。 The representation we got in here felt obligatory and forced。 Why does the only apparent queer character have to be the hypersexual, creepy bi guy? The Black woman on the team was pretty much silent or very quiet the entire book, on a predominantly white crew。 I know it was supposed to be part of her backstory, but we got exactly zero on that this entire book, whereas all the others got at least SOMETHING explained。 Also, knowing now that Kristoff has had some appropriation/racism accusations in other writing, the Syldrathi race in this book just sits poorly with me。 Not to mention that the character belonging to this race is called "Pixie Boy" CONSTANTLY and just。。。 why do we need to refer to people as slurs, especially people that are supposed to be colleagues and friends? The cryo storyline was the same one I've read about half a dozen times now。 I saw the villian reveal coming from pretty much the very beginning。 The book took me by surprise exactly twice。 The rest played out pretty predictably。 I've heard amazing reviews on this book, and I don't know if it's because this is VERY YA and I'm approaching 30, but ooof。 I don't get it。 I had no patience for these teenagers。 I could go on and on。。。 but I don't want to dunk on this book too hard。 I truly wanted to like it。 I've enjoyed both of these authors' works in the past and Illuminae remains one of my all time favorite series。 。。。more
