Summary

They are an unlikely pair: George is “small and quick and dark of face”; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child。 Yet they have formed a “family,” clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation。

Laborers in California’s dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence。 For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own。 When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp。 But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie’s unswerving obedience to the things George taught him。

one of the best book i’ve ever read

Aside from the racism, ableism, and slow beginning, it was good。 Super sad。 The contrast between Candy and his dog and the ending was interesting。

I generally like classics。 Occasionally, though, I stumble upon one that too closely resembles abstract art--pretentious and pointless。 The prose of this book is fine and the characters are interesting enough for the brief time we get to know them。 There are a few poignant scenes, but they seem to exist only for the sake of making the reader feel somber or depressed, not for the sake of progressing a story。 I like tragedy novels and plays when they mean something--take Macbeth or The Children of I generally like classics。 Occasionally, though, I stumble upon one that too closely resembles abstract art--pretentious and pointless。 The prose of this book is fine and the characters are interesting enough for the brief time we get to know them。 There are a few poignant scenes, but they seem to exist only for the sake of making the reader feel somber or depressed, not for the sake of progressing a story。 I like tragedy novels and plays when they mean something--take Macbeth or The Children of Hurin--but this little collection of scenes called Of Mice and Men seems to me little more than depressed musing on dark ideas, littered with a ridiculous amount of religious profanity。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It's a sad, compelling story。 However, I find it so uncomfortable to read such explicit racism, misogyny, and abuse of the developmentally disabled that was considered acceptable at the time。 It's a sad, compelling story。 However, I find it so uncomfortable to read such explicit racism, misogyny, and abuse of the developmentally disabled that was considered acceptable at the time。 。。。more

3。5-4 starsSimple and short。 For a short length book, story is beautiful。 Wanted to read it for the longest time so I did。 Loved George's character on how he dreams。 Book didn't disapoint。 Enjoyed it。 3。5-4 starsSimple and short。 For a short length book, story is beautiful。 Wanted to read it for the longest time so I did。 Loved George's character on how he dreams。 Book didn't disapoint。 Enjoyed it。 。。。more

Heart breaking and beautiful, Steinbeck knows how to get inside of people and helps us see, or at least, begin to see into their hearts。 I've been aware of the basic premise of this story for decades, but avoided reading it because it's just so sad。 But, now I believe I'm going to binge read one novel after another by this amazing author because he has the ability to pull the reader into a world so tangible it can be felt and experienced in a personal, intimate way。 There's no "give it time to g Heart breaking and beautiful, Steinbeck knows how to get inside of people and helps us see, or at least, begin to see into their hearts。 I've been aware of the basic premise of this story for decades, but avoided reading it because it's just so sad。 But, now I believe I'm going to binge read one novel after another by this amazing author because he has the ability to pull the reader into a world so tangible it can be felt and experienced in a personal, intimate way。 There's no "give it time to grow on you" with a Steinbeck story。 You just naturally fall in with the very first paragraph。 Like Alice through the looking glass or stepping through C。 S。 Lewis's wardrobe, you're in a tangible world of beauty and pain, love and confusion, every ounce of humanity floods in from those typed words on each page。 I leave this story grateful that Slim "gets it" and is there for George, but knowing that the pain George is feeling will never really find any kind of resolution or balm。 Why read something so sad? Why try to understand humans at all? Steinbeck helps me see, feel and empathize。 How much richer this world would be if more of us could really see each other。 。。。more

This is such an important novel; I can’t believe it has taken me this long to read it! Like ‘Huckleberry Finn’ this book provides a snapshot of a specific time and place in American history that is imperative to remember, warts and all。 It is beautifully written, juxtaposing imagery of the natural world with the manmade, both the stillness and the savagery。 Primarily though this story is about the characters。 I was surprised at how quickly I became invested and attached to the characters, especi This is such an important novel; I can’t believe it has taken me this long to read it! I loved this book。Of Mice and Men follows two friends on their journey through different ranches during the Great Depression。 One of the friends - Lennie - has quite a severe learning disability。Of Mice and Men is a pivotal tale of friendship that shows how powerful the bonds between two men can be, no matter what。The language in Of Mice and Men is also beautiful。It was both heartbreaking and heartwarming。I highly recommend。

This classic is such a superb piece of literature。 To get me in such few pages and to tell so much in such a short time。 John Steinbeck painted a picture that sucks his reader into the time period with rich characters and situations。 George and Lennie's relationship is iconic and powerful and tackles the lack of life opportunity of mental health and the lack of coping mechanisms for a person without impulse control。 Symbolism bleeds from the pages, and you could dissect the representation of the This classic is such a superb piece of literature。 To get me in such few pages and to tell so much in such a short time。 John Steinbeck painted a picture that sucks his reader into the time period with rich characters and situations。 George and Lennie's relationship is iconic and powerful and tackles the lack of life opportunity of mental health and the lack of coping mechanisms for a person without impulse control。 Symbolism bleeds from the pages, and you could dissect the representation of the time period from each line。 A brilliant literary genius that emerged from the Great Depression。Just knowing what is coming guts me, and that closing scene packs such a powerful punch that I can't read it without tears wetting my eyes。5 Stars。 。。。more
