Summary

A #1 New York Times bestseller!

Sarah J。 Maas's bestselling Crescent City series begins with House of Earth and Blood, which follows the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance。

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone。 When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation。 She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths。

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow。 His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss's enemies, no questions asked。 But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach。

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it。

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J。 Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom-and the power of love。

4。5 stars。Ohhh booooyyyyy this was a crazy time! Started off very slow, but people did tell me that after the halfway mark it picks up, and it did! Every single relationship in this book was so pure, it's like SJM gets better at writing relationships every book。 The friendship relationships in this had me crying, 3 times。 I got the audio to listen along while I read, and having that extra emotion really helped me visualise things。I'm all caught up on SJM now! I'm excited for the next book, still 4。5 stars。Ohhh booooyyyyy this was a crazy time! Started off very slow, but people did tell me that after the halfway mark it picks up, and it did! ~ 5。0 stars ~Everyone。 Listen up。 You absolutely need to read this book right after you read my review。Wow。 This is by far the best novel I have read in 2021 so far, and will read in 2021。 I doubt any other book will top this one。 Unless it's the second book in this series (so excited for it!)。 I loved this book。 Just so good。 In January, I read the entire Throne of Glass series by Sarah J。 Maas。 (Feel free to check out my reviews for the Throne of Glass series。) This novel, single-handedly, tru ~ 5。0 stars ~Everyone。 Listen up。 You absolutely need to read this book right after you read my review。Wow。 This is by far the best novel I have read in 2021 so far, and will read in 2021。 I doubt any other book will top this one。 Unless it's the second book in this series (so excited for it!)。 I loved this book。 Just so good。 In January, I read the entire Throne of Glass series by Sarah J。 Maas。 (Feel free to check out my reviews for the Throne of Glass series。) This novel, single-handedly, trumped that entire series, and the Throne of Glass series was amazing。 Just an idea of how great this novel is。 It's beautiful and will forever hold a place in my heart。 ❤️ “That’s the point of it, Bryce。 Of life。 To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow。 It makes everything that much more precious。”First off, I need to get something off my chest。 And quick。 It is devouring me whole。 The cover is ✨ stunning ✨。 Beautiful。 Definitely earns a spot on my fav-covers shelf。 Sorry if that was random and off topic, but I had a desperate need to say that。I went through a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions while reading this book。 From love and lust to despair and hopelessness。 I also laughed countless times。 The characters all have a great sense of humor, telling jokes constantly, joking around even in the most depressing times, trying to find light in the situation。 Not only did I laugh constantly, I was tearing up at so many places in the book。 The sadness felt heavy。 Real。 It felt like a burden weighing on top of me and the only way to relieve this burden was to cry my eyes out。 Overall, a great rollercoaster of emotions to put yourself through, laughing and crying along the way。 “Look toward where it hurts the most。 That’s always where the answers are。” The plot was well-designed。 I could definitely tell it was carefully plotted-out (excuse my pun) and meticulously put together。 I was kept on my toes from all the mysteries and unanswered questions。 If you saw my status updates, I just could not seem to put the book down in the second half! I loved how the plot flowed smoothly; it felt like a smooth flight without any turbulence。 Not a bumpy ride along gravelly road filled with potholes and rocks。 Plot twists were everywhere。 Maas's specialty at this point has got to be plot twists。 Facts thrown in from here and there, who knows which one is true or which one is just there to mislead you? If you hate books that are predictable, then this one is definitely suited for you。 The truth is not predictable at all and comes as a complete shock。The beginning is confusing, I have to admit。 Maas just throws a whole bunch of new names at us。 I had to constantly search up the names to remind myself who they were, and even then, I was baffled。 It wasn't like I started the book and then waited a week to pick it back up。 I actually had a constant pace and read this novel within four days, and even then, the beginning was confusing。 The names do gradually cement themselves into your brain, but it does take a longer amount of time than some other Maas novels。 If you do start reading this book (Please do, I am begging you。 You will not be disappointed。 I promise。), and you are confused by all the characters, please do not put the book down and give up。 It will become easier over time and get so much better! The ending is not "cliché"。 It is not your typical yay, happily ever after! ending。 It left the reader kind of hanging on, waiting for what happens next。 It is not a complete cliffhanger; there is a resolution and conclusion, but there is some anticipation at the end, leaving you questioning What happens next?, no doubt a devised tactic by Maas to keep us hyped up for the second book。Now, let's discuss the genre。 This is fantasy, urban fantasy to be exact。 "Regular" fantasy novels are usually in medieval times, with horses as transportation and shields, swords, daggers, etc。 as weapons。 In urban fantasy, however, fantasy blends in with the modern world, creating an interesting mix。 Modern technologies, such as phones, computers, Wi-Fi, are all used in this beautiful novel, and transportation is no longer limited to horses, but cars, helicopters, taxis, etc。 Guns are also an addition to the medieval weapons。 Honestly, the urban fantasy was captivating。 It was so interesting how Maas had to keep a balance and needed to integrate the two genres (contemporary and fantasy) together。Not only is this urban fantasy, but this is also mystery that ensnares you and does not allow you to put the book down until you have all the answers。 The mystery builds up well, and the atmosphere is tense, full of foreshadowing。 Red herrings and false leads are everywhere。 Why do I feel like Maas would make a great mystery writer? I would not categorize this as suspense or thriller, but it is definitely mystery because the investigation on the murders is what gets the plot moving。The writing style is perfection。 Although this story is told from a third person perspective, Maas does give us insight on multiple characters, as the perspective does change often。 Each point-of-view is enthralling。 I also feel like Maas is an expert at not writing cliché dialogue or lines。 She keeps the dialogue real and it feels like it could actually be a conversation in real life, minus the angels, fae, and magic, of course。The world building was great。 Confusing at times, but Maas does give a brief debrief at certain points in the plot, to keep everything clear for the reader。 Everything was explored; I don't feel like there were gaping holes。 The beginning is not just info-dumping。 The information is spread out throughout the plot。 At certain points, we learn more about the world and add it to our knowledge。All the characters were pristine, unique, and carefully designed。 Each one had a personality that was easily identifiable。 The way Maas develops relations between characters is absolutely graceful and smooth, unlike anything I have seen before。 The diverse characters really grabbed me, and I felt like I could just reach into the book and touch them。 Tangible characters, my absolute favorite。Now, I'm sure you are all waiting to here about the ❤️romance❤️。 Yes, the romance。 Well, I have to say。。。。 it was amazing! Nothing off about it at all。 My heart melted so many times。 My heart was shattered and healed。 My heart was lifted and it honestly felt like it was flying。 It made me smile so many times and my eyes watered from the sweetness (not cliché, though)。 Maas also explores the way broken characters put themselves back together, and how they need each other to heal themselves again。 “Through love, all is possible。” This is definitely a page-turner that keeps you on your toes, anticipating the next big shocker。 I will most definitely be continuing the series。 I literally cannot wait for the next book to come out (November 2, 2021。 Save the date!), and I am quite sure after reading the second book, I will be on the balls of my feet to get my hands on the third and final book! Crossing my fingers that the second book will not only meet my expectations, but exceed them!I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, contemporary, and/or new adult。 Honestly, everyone should read this, even if you did not enjoy Maas's previous books because this one is on a whole new world level。⪼ a well-deserved 5。0 stars ★★★★★ Links to my other reviews in the series- check back for my reviews for the other books in the series after the other books are released! or, follow me and my reviews will show up in your update feed :)) DisclaimerAll opinions on books I’ve reviewed and rated are my own, with no objective to be harshly criticizing or offending anyone。 I am reviewing the book based on my experience and am not bashing on the author or others who like or dislike the book。 If there is something I am doing wrong, please tell me and let me know how I can change it。#GoodreadsChoiceAwardsBookClub (April 2021)Review written on 4/3/2021 。。。more

Amazing world building。 The plot twists in this book are everything and the female empowerment guuuysss!! I rarely like ALL of the characters in a book, but this one did not disappoint: best side characters ever。 Not a YA book, more like NA but without smut。 But don’t worry, the sexual tension makes up for it。 Probably my favorite Sarah J Maas book。 Highly recommend, can’t wait for the second one to come out。 House of Earth and Blood Amazing world building。 The plot twists in this book are everything and the female empowerment guuuysss!! The only reason I am giving this book 4 starts is because it took so long to get into。 Unlike ACOTAR, it is written in second person which I found much harder to engage with, it took much longer to empathise and appreciate the characters。 Once you get past the 200 page mark(out of 800), it really becomes worthwhile。 The last 200 pages were just unputdownable, I was so captivated with how cleverly the plot had twisted and turned, the minor references earlier in the book becoming increasingly impo The only reason I am giving this book 4 starts is because it took so long to get into。 Unlike ACOTAR, it is written in second person which I found much harder to engage with, it took much longer to empathise and appreciate the characters。 Once you get past the 200 page mark(out of 800), it really becomes worthwhile。 The last 200 pages were just unputdownable, I was so captivated with how cleverly the plot had twisted and turned, the minor references earlier in the book becoming increasingly important。 If you’ve got stamina, I highly recommend! 。。。more

3。5*I have to say I liked it even though I struggled to get through the first 100 pages。 it reads like every other Sarah J。 Maas from the characters to the plot。 I saw the twist coming from miles away but it was still executed well and overall it's a solid book。 However, I felt like this book could have been at least 100 pages shorter。 At times the pacing was really slow and the book felt kind of repetitive。 Something else that bothered me is that this is Sarah's first adult novel instead of YA, 3。5*I have to say I liked it even though I struggled to get through the first 100 pages。 it reads like every other Sarah J。 Maas from the characters to the plot。 I saw the twist coming from miles away but it was still executed well and overall it's a solid book。 However, I felt like this book could have been at least 100 pages shorter。 At times the pacing was really slow and the book felt kind of repetitive。 Something else that bothered me is that this is Sarah's first adult novel instead of YA, but it didn't feel very adult except for the sex and the swearing。 I wish the mystery elements of the book were slightly more developed and overall I wish the book was just a bit more sophisticated since it's actually aimed at an older audience。 。。。more

I don't know what should I properly feel about this book。 And I don't find this amusing at all。 "LIGHT IT UP!!" To be honest it didn't。 Only a single ray of light at the last 150 pages or so。 "THROUGH LOVE, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE。"Didn't see the ounce of it。 And I found this line very cheesy if you ask me。 What I liked about this book? The storyline。 Lehabah, the fire spirit。 And the fifth Prince of Hel, Prince of Chasm, Aidas。 He is really intriguing。 I want to know more about him。 What shocked I don't know what should I properly feel about this book。 And I don't find this amusing at all。 "LIGHT IT UP!!" To be honest it didn't。 Only a single ray of light at the last 150 pages or so。 "THROUGH LOVE, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE。"Didn't see the ounce of it。 And I found this line very cheesy if you ask me。 What I liked about this book? The storyline。 Lehabah, the fire spirit。 And the fifth Prince of Hel, Prince of Chasm, Aidas。 He is really intriguing。 I want to know more about him。 What shocked me in this book? That after reading two series by Sarah。 J。 Mass I can say that in the first book itself it is shown that the main love interests are going to stick together with each other for the entire series。 Or I hope so。 I mean there is no other potential interest to whom heroine of this book can throw her heart at。 What I disliked about this book? The heroine itself。 And the fact that I don't give a shit about any characters in this book。 Whether they live or die, I don't think I'm going to cry for any of them。 Coming to storyline。 Like I mentioned earlier I liked the storyline。 It was interesting。 But you can only like it so much if you don't liked the characters at all。 Than even the storyline will be dull。 Coming to characters。 You already know my stand。 Umbra Mortis。 The shadow of death。 Oraisis Althalar。 Our Fallen Angel and main love interest。 By the name and the stories that have been told in this book, I expected someone really to fear。 But I really didn't find him intimidating at all。 Even Micah, who was not that of a main focused character, was little intimidating。 Now Bryce Quinlan。 I have to give credit to the author, she really do give her heroines a great and shocking revelation。 This happened in the last portion of the book。 But by that I was already convinced I don't like her。 She's not a great person。 I found her self-centered。 I mean come on half of the things that's happening to her was her mistake。 She was paying for that。 Side characters not so impressive。 I only give shit about Lehabah and Aidas。 Coming to world building。 The info dumping the author did was not impressive。 It really took me some time to understand。 I didn't find the supernatural world, magic system and supernatural beings that impressive。 In this world almost all humans are slave。 And our heroine is half human and half fae。 Who are also not treated well。 The thing that bugged the most is that the heroine itself don't give a shit about what is happening to humans。 No one does。 She thinks human rebellion and their cost is waste of time。 They should just accept the reality。And we the audience have to read this entire massive book focused on her life。 Why the readers, who is also humans, want to read the book where humans are slaves and the story focuses on fighting demons and inter politics not on freeing the humans? Our heroine sees a horrible war scene in the TV and poor humans in worse conditions and moves her head in another direction。 And feels pity for them。 Not fierceness, not compassion but pity。 So much for hero support。 And she does drugs and is borderline alcoholic。 After a tragedy she stops doing these things。 I mean to stop doing these harmful things there must be a tragedy to happen。 As an inspiration。 And in the story it was explained that if Bruce wants something she gets it in any condition。 And do you wanna know the example for this that was given in the book? If she wanna fuck around she will and won't think about what people will think of her。 And if she wanna do drugs there's no one that can stop her。 This is how it was referenced in the book。 Some horrible people call her names but that doesn't mean you have to go and do exactly those things to prove those things right。 The only reason I gave this book a 3 stars because I liked the storyline and the liked the last battle scene in this book。 I enjoyed that。 And Lehabah and Aidas, of course。 Further to say I will read the next book。 This one did left me with too much curiosity。 And the epilogue scene was of Aidas and the scene raised so many questions and promise to some back impactful history to this story。 Which I'm eager to learn。 。。。more
