Junji Ito is a modern master of horror comics。 Smashed is a collection of short stories full of images and concepts to freeze the blood。 His pacing is superb, creating an atmosphere of creeping dread。It's also nice to read short manga for a change。 Even Ito’s longer stories tend to be single volume affairs。 Several of the tales in this book are interrelated, but, for the most part, they stand on their own。 Some random thoughts:I love how the cat's appearance slowly morphs over the course of “Soi Junji Ito is a modern master of horror comics。 Smashed is a collection of short stories full of images and concepts to freeze the blood。 His pacing is superb, creating an atmosphere of creeping dread。It's also nice to read short manga for a change。 Even Ito’s longer stories tend to be single volume affairs。 Several of the tales in this book are interrelated, but, for the most part, they stand on their own。 Some random thoughts:I love how the cat's appearance slowly morphs over the course of “Soichi’s Beloved Pet。” “Ghosts of Prime Time” and “Splendid Shadow Song” both feature some decidedly odd concepts in terms of menace。 Definitely not typical horror fare。The title story, “Smashed,” is just plain weird。 I mean that in the best, most loving way possible。 As someone who lives with a fair amount of books in the house, “Library Vision” hits a bit close to home …I think that, at this point, I’ve had enough experience with Ito’s work to just unreservedly recommend anything he's ever written。 。。。more

Blood Darkness 5/5- The eating disorder kind of hit me somehow, I felt for Nami。 Not a very clear end but it has a lesson: stay away from bats。Ghosts of Prime Time 3/5- Kind of a scare concept but fun。Roar 3/5- a nice twist on ghost stories, but it fell a bit flat at the end。Earthbound 5/5- What an excellent idea, beautiful execution。 I also really liked the main character。Death row doorbell 4/5- Scary, but you know somehow I feel like there is a lot of people asking for forgiveness after killin Blood Darkness 5/5- The eating disorder kind of hit me somehow, I felt for Nami。 Not a very clear end but it has a lesson: stay away from bats。Ghosts of Prime Time 3/5- Kind of a scare concept but fun。Roar 3/5- a nice twist on ghost stories, but it fell a bit flat at the end。Earthbound 5/5- What an excellent idea, beautiful execution。 I also really liked the main character。Death row doorbell 4/5- Scary, but you know somehow I feel like there is a lot of people asking for forgiveness after killing。 I feel really bad for the main character。The mystery of the haunted house 5/5- Absolutely incredible。 Great set up。The mystery of the haunted house: soichis version 5/5- even after everything that happened during the story, the ending made me a bit upset。Souchis beloved pet 4/5- what a strange kid。 Interesting but strange。 Also what a strange cat but not surprising at all。In mirror valley 3/5- I feel like it’s pretty short and loses in that。 I don’t think it made sense to start where it did。 Nice concept nonetheless。I don’t want to be a ghost 5/5- Really creepy and sad but loved every moment of it。 I love the “lost girl in the road” thing。Library vision 4/5- Pretty books make you go crazy。Splendid shadow song 4/5- Really scary concept you can’t really stop songs stuck in your head。Smashed 5/5- My favorite story。 Great concept, still trying to understand the end of it。 。。。more

Smashed is my first experience reading Junji Ito I certainly was no disappointed I read each short story with anticipation each one creeped me out to the bone even looking at the front cover sent a chill down my spine。 13 stories to haunt you for the rest of your life was how Smashed was advertised to me certainly did the job I recommend Juni Ito short stories to any horror movie fan looking to read his work。

i will give ito this: getting thumped by a sentient tree from across the world is a new onei probably would give this a higher rating if i had read it earlier - about half of these weren't new to me (although i like them, especially 'roar。') i just wish the publisher was better about not repeating the stories so often。 i will give ito this: getting thumped by a sentient tree from across the world is a new onei probably would give this a higher rating if i had read it earlier - about half of these weren't new to me (although i like them, especially 'roar。') i just wish the publisher was better about not repeating the stories so often。 。。。more

Out of thirteen short stories, only a few are very memorable。 However, the art is wonderful, and if you're a fan of horror it's sure to be a fun read。 I've heard some of Junji Ito's other collections are better story-wise, and even if that wasn't true, I would still pick them up for the art alone。 Out of thirteen short stories, only a few are very memorable。 However, the art is wonderful, and if you're a fan of horror it's sure to be a fun read。 I've heard some of Junji Ito's other collections are better story-wise, and even if that wasn't true, I would still pick them up for the art alone。 。。。more

Horror works so well with short stories and this collection proves it。

Once again Junji Ito does not disappoint。 The stories were different from your traditional horror。 They were bone chilling。 The cover art of the hardcover is absolutely gorgeous and the illustrations are amazing and creepy。

Another collection, another great set of stories in all their gory, macabre glory。 The artwork is what I especially love about Ito’s works and while the artwork is always great in the past I have found some of his stories lacking but I have to say this collection has one of my favourite stories I’ve read by him, “Earthbound”。 Interesting concept with a great twist and the title story “Smashed” has a great hook as well, classic storyteller and he’s at the top of his game in this book。

Definitely not my favorite Ito work to date but also not awful。 Generally speaking, short story collections have never wowed me and this was no exception。 I guess I prefer to settle into a story。A few of the shorts within this will stick with me。 In particular, there are two back to back stories that relate to each other and it was probably that repetition that has it stuck in my head。 I already can’t call to mine many others, so。The art work is always cool and the stories are bizarre as usual, Definitely not my favorite Ito work to date but also not awful。 Generally speaking, short story collections have never wowed me and this was no exception。 I guess I prefer to settle into a story。A few of the shorts within this will stick with me。 In particular, there are two back to back stories that relate to each other and it was probably that repetition that has it stuck in my head。 I already can’t call to mine many others, so。The art work is always cool and the stories are bizarre as usual, so I did enjoy it! I want to apologize to the middle school librarian to whom, in about 2013, I blurted out Junji Ito as a recommendation for a student of hers that wanted scary manga。 I was giving a series of book talks on manga for teachers, and had thus far only read the first volume of Uzumaki (which was disturbing but not gory) and one short story on the internet (which was similarly PG)。 I had no idea the amazing breadth and depravity and astonishing fright of his work。 I hope she didn't get in trouble。 I wo I want to apologize to the middle school librarian to whom, in about 2013, I blurted out Junji Ito as a recommendation for a student of hers that wanted scary manga。 I was giving a series of book talks on manga for teachers, and had thus far only read the first volume of Uzumaki (which was disturbing but not gory) and one short story on the internet (which was similarly PG)。 I had no idea the amazing breadth and depravity and astonishing fright of his work。 I hope she didn't get in trouble。 I would have loved Junji Ito in middle school, but he has a singularly horrific imagination。 。。。more

I was really disappointed with this after reading so many good reviews。 The artwork was really well done but the stories were just awful。 There might have been one or two that were decent but overall this was definitely a hard pass。 Unless you're into over the top supernatural 'horror' I really wouldn't bother。 I was really disappointed with this after reading so many good reviews。 The artwork was really well done but the stories were just awful。 There might have been one or two that were decent but overall this was definitely a hard pass。 Unless you're into over the top supernatural 'horror' I really wouldn't bother。 。。。more

Collection of thirteen short horror stories。 I hate to give this three stars。 The ideas behind each story are actually great but the endings tend to fall flat。 They don't end with a bang so they feel like a bit of a letdown。 I imagine it must be hard to write horror and build up all that tension and also be able to end it in a way that somehow allows that tension to be released just the right way。 I can actually be quite forgiving for the most part when it comes to horror and so-so endings。 I ju Collection of thirteen short horror stories。 I hate to give this three stars。 The ideas behind each story are actually great but the endings tend to fall flat。 They don't end with a bang so they feel like a bit of a letdown。 I imagine it must be hard to write horror and build up all that tension and also be able to end it in a way that somehow allows that tension to be released just the right way。 I can actually be quite forgiving for the most part when it comes to horror and so-so endings。 I just can't bring myself to give this more than three stars though, but I do recommend this as a fun, non-commiting read。The cover is beautiful and creepy enough that I had to cover it up at night。 The inside of the jacket is really beautiful and elegant, almost like marbled paper。 The artwork is very neat and clean and easy on the eyes。 The font is also very neat and crisp and easy to read。 Cover, inside jacket, artwork, font all get 5 stars。 Favorite stories: Earthbound Soichi's Beloved Pet 。。。more

Another horror anthology by Junji Ito。 I really enjoyed maybe 3 or 4 out of the 13 tales, and thought most of the others were just decent。 I actually tend to like Ito's sad stories more than his pure horror stories。 As such, Earthbound, Roar and Death Row Doorbell were my favorites。Death Row Doorbell: A happy family of five is torn apart when they're assaulted by a gang of rogue bikers during a summer vacation, leaving the father and youngest child dead, and leaving the brother and sister who su Another horror anthology by Junji Ito。 I really enjoyed maybe 3 or 4 out of the 13 tales, and thought most of the others were just decent。 I actually tend to like Ito's sad stories more than his pure horror stories。 As such, Earthbound, Roar and Death Row Doorbell were my favorites。Death Row Doorbell: A happy family of five is torn apart when they're assaulted by a gang of rogue bikers during a summer vacation, leaving the father and youngest child dead, and leaving the brother and sister who survived in care of their mother who is now suffering from severe brain damage from the beatings she endured。 Every day, the spirit of the gang leader appears at their front door, begging for forgiveness while his body wastes away in prison waiting for his death sentence to be carried out。 The brother and sister refuse to forgive him, growing further tormented by the spirit of the man who destroyed their lives until one of them finally snaps。 The theme of the story is about how holding grudges and being unable to forgive those who have wronged us ends up hurting the victims much more than it hurts the assailants。 Vengeance, hatred and grudges are all horribly self-destructive things。Earthbound: My favorite of the bunch。 A mysterious syndrome goes around where people stand in place like human scarecrows over sites of mourning。 Graves, abandoned houses, memorial sites, grief has seemingly become a physical disease which binds someone to a single location until they die of malnutrition。 There's more to the syndrome than meets the eye, however。 Is it caused by grief, or is it caused by a guilty conscience? Are they being punished by their inability to move on, or are they being punished for more sinister reasons?Roar: Every day, the ghostly illusion of a flood flows through a ravine because the waters are haunted by the tortured souls of flood victims who were drowned in nearby villages。 It deals with themes of survivor's guilt and the dangers of clinging to the past。***My Social MediaMy YouTube Channel: https://www。youtube。com/channel/UCPPs。。。My Instagram Account: https://www。instagram。com/michael_sor。。。My Wattpad Account: https://www。wattpad。com/user/Michael-。。。 。。。more

A collection of short, yet disturbing tales, from one of the most acclaimed horror writers in comics。 I've never read any of Junji Ito's work, but I have seen panels and drawings posted here and there, and they were so weird and macabre that I knew I would have to check some of it out。 I'm certainly glad I did as I have found a new section of comics that I wasn't really aware of。 So this collection is just that: a collection of short stories, each unrelated, but each strange and creepy。 They ran A collection of short, yet disturbing tales, from one of the most acclaimed horror writers in comics。 I've never read any of Junji Ito's work, but I have seen panels and drawings posted here and there, and they were so weird and macabre that I knew I would have to check some of it out。 I'm certainly glad I did as I have found a new section of comics that I wasn't really aware of。 So this collection is just that: a collection of short stories, each unrelated, but each strange and creepy。 They range in topics such as: a song that gets stuck in your head, uncontrollable laughter, a ghost flood, etc。。。。 I think what makes Ito's stories so effective is that they are all strangely relatable。 The subject matter isn't influenced by superpowers or cosmic horrors; they all stem from everyday fears, desires, feelings and objects but they get twisted to grotesque degree。 Part of why the book is so creepy is the art。 While the models of the characters are similar, the horror aspects of the art are really well done。 Ito doesn't shy away from gore or hideousness of any kind。 It's the opposite, he embraces it and uses it within the story to make it more unsettling。 Seeing something that is off the wall horrible within a domestic or urban setting makes it that much more disturbing, and the images stay with you for some time after you put the book down。 I'm glad I gave this a shot, as it was a really fun time to read。 As a casual fan of the horror genre, this was a perfect balance of creepiness and sincere attention to detail。 Of course, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who isn't into horror in general, but if you are, check this out。 One story or another will crawl into your brain and live there for some time。 。。。more

As a fan of Ito's work, I was a little let down by the majority of stories here but there were still some shining examples of him doing what he does best。 As an entry point for newcomers, I can see this being an adequate offering of his work。 Less body horror and creepiness than previous entries I've read (which is what I personally enjoy the most from Ito) so if you're squeamish but want to give Ito a chance, this may be the best offering for you even if most stories are subpar (though I'd pers As a fan of Ito's work, I was a little let down by the majority of stories here but there were still some shining examples of him doing what he does best。 As an entry point for newcomers, I can see this being an adequate offering of his work。 Less body horror and creepiness than previous entries I've read (which is what I personally enjoy the most from Ito) so if you're squeamish but want to give Ito a chance, this may be the best offering for you even if most stories are subpar (though I'd personally recommend Fragments of Horror over this)。If what you're here for is Ito's art, you'll find ghosts more than you'll find original ideas discovered in his plethora of other works。 It's because of that that I found The Mystery of the Haunted House, Earthbound and Smashed among my favourites (all containing amazingly creepy art and ideas) while my least favourite stories were Roar, Death Row Doorbell, Ghosts of Prime Time and Splendid Shadow Song, most of which were ghost stories。Individual reviews:1。 Bloodsucking Darkness。 Sets the creepy gothic tone of this collection。 Well enough executed and establishes the lack of body horror throughout this collection。 As a story, it dealt with a theme I wouldn't have expected but in terms of a threat, I think this one has its moments (eg。 bats swarming into the bedroom) but is largely marred by the sudden ending。 It works, but Ito has done better。 3 stars。2。 Ghosts of Prime Time。 The concept of this is a neat one but I found the implementation to be silly。 I think this one would have been better had it finished 2/3rds through and had an ambiguous ending rather than continuing on like it did。 I'm not a fan of the two female comedians and I find that aspect of Ito's work (when he includes that particular type of character) not my thing。 2 stars。3。 Roar。 Eh, the idea was fine but the execution and reactions were mediocre。 The twist is very much implied but the reaction at the end of the story is so silly, there's no actual care coming from the character。 It's like watching a car crash happening in front of you and you just shrug and say "well that sucks" and move on。 This is perhaps the most uninteresting story in the whole book。 2 stars。4。 Earthbound。 I really liked this one! Ito maintains tension throughout and I liked the twists it made。 The creepy statues that appear around town actually get an explanation about why its all happening and the protagonist actually makes informed choices once they get more information on everything。 I also believe this could be a really good short film。 5 stars。5。 Death Row Doorbell。 Eh。 He seems to love his ghost stories in this collection but I found this one was just bland。 It has some scenes that might make people squeamish but I found the solutions the characters took were just a bit too much。 The evil person just looked dumb and silly too。 2 stars。6。 The Mystery of the Haunted House。 Perhaps my favourite from this collection, I just really enjoyed this because it was exactly what you thought was going to happen and more。 He uses the idea of a haunted house and really goes with it and it works so well with the creepy things Ito houses inside。 The only gripe I have about this story (which unfortunately makes it come across as a bit silly) is a character gets shot in the anus with a nail。 It's just so off tone from the rest of this great work that is definitely worth a read if you want to be majorly creeped out。 If you forget the butthole thing, it's 5 stars。 If not, 4 stars。7。 The Mystery of the Haunted House: Soichi's Version。 An interesting continuation that had good ideas but came across as really shallow by the end。 Everything else leading up to that point was enjoyable though, albeit slightly confusing placing everything in relation to the original story given they basically have the same name。 3 stars。8。 Soichi's Beloved Pet。 more good art, not a fan of Soichi。 It's this story that makes it abundantly clear Soichi isn't a likeable character, tormenting the cat to get his own way with it。 I did enjoy the transformation and end result but it was just a bit strange that's what happened。 It contains some crazy art though。 3 stars。9。 In Mirror Valley。 I personally found this one hard to follow because the flashbacks and placement of the mirrors were unclear but it contains a very clever ending that I really liked。 While Ito's classic art isn't on show here, it's such a clever idea that is still excellently executed。 Read this for the idea, not necessarily the story。 3 stars。10。 I Don't Want to Be a Ghost。 I loved the concept, art and ending but I absolutely hated the catalyst event。 Perhaps my favourite ghost story from this book (it's also got a really silly title), the art from this is fantastic。 The main character deserves everything and my only gripe is it ends with the waiting game rather than giving the audience satisfaction and catharsis of death。 4 stars。11。 Library Vision。 Great art (especially the personification of Spiny Hell) but I feel the story was a little bit "oh, okay, this is happening now" as it just took you along rather than explaining why things were happening。 3 stars。 12。 Splendid Shadow Song。 a let down, I didn't find myself enjoying this as much as I could have and the song played throughout seemed silly。 I feel it's a waste that this was the character portrayed on the cover of the book。 2 stars。13。 Smashed。 I really enjoyed this, I feel this is his most Lovecraftian story from this book and a perfect story to end on。 The mystery throughout is fantastic and gives a sense of dread that you just can't escape。 The art work is signature Ito and you really get your money's worth with this, watching the same thing satisfyingly happen again and again。 My one gripe is the final panel comes across as a bit comedic and not as impactful as one would hope。 Still a great execution throughout however。 5 stars。 。。。more

All 13 stories are one of a kind! I enjoyed the Soichi stories surprisingly。 The three of those were the most gruesome in my opinion。 The stories are relatively the same amount of pages。 All ending in a twist that makes you gasp。 This is the second manga I own from Junji Ito and I love his works so much。 The creativity that goes into these short stories - both the artwork and plots - is out of this world。 Would love to read more of his works in the future

A great collection of Junji Ito's horror shorts。 While not all of them reached the heights of Junji Ito's most known works, the few that didn't stood out were still pretty solid, well written stories。 Hey, not every piece can be a masterpiece。 The good ones however were top tier, here's a brief comment on each of them:Bloodsucking Darkness was an asphyxiating trip into the life of a victim of obsession, with plenty of weird bloody twists to revel in disgust。In Earthbound, Junji Ito does what he A great collection of Junji Ito's horror shorts。 While not all of them reached the heights of Junji Ito's most known works, the few that didn't stood out were still pretty solid, well written stories。 Hey, not every piece can be a masterpiece。 The good ones however were top tier, here's a brief comment on each of them:Bloodsucking Darkness was an asphyxiating trip into the life of a victim of obsession, with plenty of weird bloody twists to revel in disgust。In Earthbound, Junji Ito does what he does best, create a horror scenario that becomes a reality for society and when the story focuses on one character, the horrors at large linger。Mystery of the Haunted House and Soichi's Version of the same story is some of the most devilishly takes on weird characters with a penchant for bits of humor and vicious violence。 It also forms along with the next story a trilogy of sorts that make this volume a must buy。Soichi's beloved pet continues with the titular character making a nightmare out of the lives of others, this time turning the arrival of a pet into a nightmare。Smashed is as good stupid fun as the splatter films it pays homage too, a disgusting treat。 。。。more
