The novel’s all-too-familiar scenario offers a springboard for discussion among middle schoolers…Easily grasped scenarios and short chapters help make this timely #MeToo story accessible to a wide audience。” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Realistic and heartbreaking。” —BCCB

Barbara Dee explores the subject of #MeToo for the middle grade audience in this heart-wrenching—and ultimately uplifting—novel about experiencing harassment and unwanted attention from classmates。

For seventh-grader Mila, it starts with some boys giving her an unwanted hug on the school blacktop。 A few days later, at recess, one of the boys (and fellow trumpet player) Callum tells Mila it’s his birthday, and asks her for a “birthday hug。” He’s just being friendly, isn’t he? And how can she say no? But Callum’s hug lasts a few seconds too long, and feels…weird。 According to her friend, Zara, Mila is being immature and overreacting。 Doesn’t she know what flirting looks like?

But the boys don’t leave Mila alone。 On the bus。 In the halls。 During band practice—the one place Mila could always escape。

It doesn’t feel like flirting—so what is it? Thanks to a chance meeting, Mila begins to find solace in a new place: karate class。 Slowly, with the help of a fellow classmate, Mila learns how to stand her ground and how to respect others—and herself。

From the author of Everything I Know About YouHalfway Normal, and Star-Crossed comes this timely story of a middle school girl standing up and finding her voice。

Definitely a must read for middle schoolers! Learning how to stand up for yourself and knowing the difference between bullying and being too sensitive in middle school is extremely important。 When the main character Mila is harassed by the boys in her class, she learns some important lessons from friends and finds her voice to ask for help and support。

😃 。。。more

I think all boys should read this book。 I think anyone who's spent time on the girl/woman end of the gender spectrum already knows all of the content, so they don't need to (and maybe -- and I say this with a deep appreciation of the work this book is doing -- they shouldn't have to)。I have pretty intentionally not read this book up to this point, but it's a Caudill this year。 What can I say? I'm ancient, but I can still name the girls that boys did this stuff to when I was in seventh grade。 I d I think all boys should read this book。 I think anyone who's spent time on the girl/woman end of the gender spectrum already knows all of the content, so they don't need to (and maybe -- and I say this with a deep appreciation of the work this book is doing -- they shouldn't have to)。I have pretty intentionally not read this book up to this point, but it's a Caudill this year。 What can I say? I read YA fiction but rarely middle school fiction。 I did not expect this to be so tough。 This story of seventh grader Mila’s #MeToo experiences called up so much anxiety for me it took me three weeks to read it。 A flawed but overall good story。 Gonna be a tough mirror book for some kids。

An important YA book that focuses on sexual harassment in junior high, as well as challenges with friends, families, and school。

This is a book that should be discussed in junior high schools。 The attitude that boys are mean when they like a girl so they have to put up with it is not okay。 Sexual harassment can happen at any age, even thirteen。 So many girls are uncomfortable with the changes their bodies are starting to go through and in no way is it okay for a boy to touch a girl without her permission。 Reading this definitely got me fired up and I appreciated that the ending dealt with consequences。 Mila is just starti This is a book that should be discussed in junior high schools。 The attitude that boys are mean when they like a girl so they have to put up with it is not okay。 Sexual harassment can happen at any age, even thirteen。 So many girls are uncomfortable with the changes their bodies are starting to go through and in no way is it okay for a boy to touch a girl without her permission。 Reading this definitely got me fired up and I appreciated that the ending dealt with consequences。 Mila is just starting puberty and doesn't know how to deal with the changes。 Her clothes don't fit well but her mom can't afford to go shopping, so she feels like her body is on display。 This attracts unwanted attention from some boys at school, who make it a game to touch her or say gross things to her。 I felt so bad for Mila, she didn't know what to do and felt like she couldn't tell an adult。 Her best friend isn't supportive and Mila just needed help。 Luckily, she eventually found someone who listened to her and took it seriously。 Too many kids go through something like this, especially the girls。 This definitely brings up a lot of thoughts and feelings about how society expects certain things from boys and girls。 I hope everyone reading this gains some insight into this toxic culture。 。。。more

A clearly written book for young adults, with a very serious topic at its heart。 Because it is so clearly written, I didn't see the complexity that I prefer。 But I can't fault it for that when I consider intended audience and complexity of the topic。 A clearly written book for young adults, with a very serious topic at its heart。 Because it is so clearly written, I didn't see the complexity that I prefer。 But I can't fault it for that when I consider intended audience and complexity of the topic。 。。。more

4。5 First of all I appreciate the author for taking up such a topic for a younger audience。 Most of the times people fail to explain a topic such as sexual harassment to children, so they don't do it at all。 But it's actually really important that we learn about such topics。The writing was simple and easy to understand and because of that I didn't want to put this down。 The characters in themselves were really well depicted。 I love how Zara's character is shown。 There are definitely such people 4。5 First of all I appreciate the author for taking up such a topic for a younger audience。 Most of the times people fail to explain a topic such as sexual harassment to children, so they don't do it at all。 But it's actually really important that we learn about such topics。The writing was simple and easy to understand and because of that I didn't want to put this down。 The characters in themselves were really well depicted。 I love how Zara's character is shown。 There are definitely such people who feel like they're helping someone while they might be doing just the opposite。Mila, Omi, Max, Zara。 They all felt so real。 Because different people's approaches towards a single matter could be so different。The "basketball boys" understood what they did was wrong and I hope that everyone can。Mila's mom was a character whom I really admired。 Despite of all that she was going through she wanted her kids to be happy。 I hope she's happy with her job now:)I loved the idea of the teachers to organise that "community meeting"。 It definitely made everyone understand what Mila had gone through。Of course there's the cutie pie Hadley 💖💖At the end I would like to say that this book is an important one and read it if you've not。 。。。more

This is a phenomenally written, relevant book for middle schoolers。 Typically, we think sexual harassment should be discussed in high school, but as our young ones explore more and more on their devices, we are seeing the need to discuss this in middle school。 This is a must read for boys and girls in today’s overexposed age。 The author brilliantly has the protagonist develop self-awareness and her voice throughout the story。 Bravo!

Definitely a must-read for middle schoolers, in my opinion。I read this around a year ago, in 5th grade, where boys just started harassing girls。Of course, we were told, "Oh, he just likes you。" "Oh, he's hitting you because he has a crush on you。" And worst of all, "Boys will be boys。" I'm in 6th grade now, and we still hear these excuses。 When are boys going to be held accountable for their actions? Perhaps I have misinterpreted this book。 I totally agree that the subject of sexual harassment must be a topic in middle school literature。 The last few chapters of the book were headed in a good direction but then it all went off the rails for me。 There was a community meeting and the the boys had to listen to Mila。 But the fact that they had been going from girl to girl showed they had no respect for girls, not just Mila。 And in the end why did the author have Mila have to face her main harass Perhaps I have misinterpreted this book。 I totally agree that the subject of sexual harassment must be a topic in middle school literature。 The last few chapters of the book were headed in a good direction but then it all went off the rails for me。 There was a community meeting and the the boys had to listen to Mila。 But the fact that they had been going from girl to girl showed they had no respect for girls, not just Mila。 And in the end why did the author have Mila have to face her main harasser in Mila’s safe space? And as his guide? I wish Mila would have found her voice to say NO, he has to find another space。 Oh, I was disappointed。 I feel like the victim was pictured as having to make the harasser “feel ok”。 。。。more

Wow。 This was really good。 It’s about this girl named Mila who doesn’t think the boys at school, who seem to constantly want to touch her, are flirting, despite her friend’s assurances。 It’s her story about going through sexual harassment at school, and it talks about what she’s going through with her parents’ divorce and her mom’s low paying job。 Mila’s voice was very well done。 I could see this being written by a teen girl。 However, that was my one problem with it。 Despite the topics they were Wow。 This was really good。 It’s about this girl named Mila who doesn’t think the boys at school, who seem to constantly want to touch her, are flirting, despite her friend’s assurances。 It’s her story about going through sexual harassment at school, and it talks about what she’s going through with her parents’ divorce and her mom’s low paying job。 Mila’s voice was very well done。 I could see this being written by a teen girl。 However, that was my one problem with it。 Despite the topics they were discussing, it felt a little young。 I mean, it is geared toward younger readers, but I would like it to be a *little* more mature considering the circumstances。Ages 10+ 。。。more

This book should be required reading for all middle school students and middle school educators。 It particularly excels at depicting the diverse reactions of the friends, classmates and adults in Mila's life, and provides excellent models of both what to do and what not to do when sexual harassment is happening within a school community。 I wish this book had existed when I was in seventh or eighth grade。 This book should be required reading for all middle school students and middle school educators。 It particularly excels at depicting the diverse reactions of the friends, classmates and adults in Mila's life, and provides excellent models of both what to do and what not to do when sexual harassment is happening within a school community。 I wish this book had existed when I was in seventh or eighth grade。 。。。more
