Summary

The next step for applying the life-changing lessons of the bestseller Start With Why

With Start With Why, Simon Sinek inspired a movement to build a world in which the vast majority of us can feel safe while we are at work and fulfilled when we go home at night。 However, many people have had trouble bringing the book's message into their own career and company。 Now, along with two of his colleagues, Peter Docker and David Mead, he has created a guide to the most important step any business can take: finding your why。

This easy-to-follow guide starts with the search for your personal why, and then expands to helping your colleagues find your organization's why。 With detailed instructions on every stage in the process, the book also answer common concerns, such as: What if my why sounds like my competitor's? Can you have more than one why? And, if my work doesn't match my why, what do I do?

Whether you're entry level or a CEO, whether your team is run by the founder or a recent hire, these simple steps will lead you on a path to a more fulfilling life and longterm success for you and your colleagues。

This was disappointing, given how much I enjoyed the overall message behind Start With Why。I could deal with Simon Sinek's name being tied to it but not really having that much to do with the book's writing itself。。。 He's got a business and publishing books like this, offering workshops, $150 online courses, $475 two-hour sessions, etc。 all help support that business。 No shame in that game。But, at least for individuals looking to get something out of this book, there isn't enough actionable stuf This was disappointing, given how much I enjoyed the overall message behind Start With Why。I could deal with Simon Sinek's name being tied to it but not really having that much to do with the book's writing itself。。。 He's got a business and publishing books like this, offering workshops, $150 online courses, $475 two-hour sessions, etc。 all help support that business。 No shame in that game。But, at least for individuals looking to get something out of this book, there isn't enough actionable stuff you can do on your own。 There's slightly more depth for those in an organization looking for find the "Why" of the company or of subcultures within it, but the bulk of the content probably could've just as easily been turned into a couple blog posts。 There just isn't that much substance。。。I liked the idea of collecting from stories from the past and finding that 'golden thread' that ties things together。What I didn't like is for it to be effective, according to the authors, is that you can't interpret it yourself。 So you need a partner。。。。 It needs to be someone you trust enough to share your stories with。 It needs to be someone willing to actively listen to those stories and capable of identifying common themes between them。 It also needs to be someone who does not know you well enough to have heard the stories before or have a preconceived notion of you and what motivates you。。。。 Uh。。。huh。 Coincidentally, you can hire someone from Simon Sinek's company to be your partner。 At the low, low cost of $475 for a 2-hour block of time。。。 But, hey, let's just assume that partner is easy to find。。。Once your partner has identified the primary themes and whittles it down to just one core theme, you both take 5-minutes and make a rough-draft of your "Why"。Great。 Only you aren't quite done yet。 Now you have to have to get your closest friends explain to you why they are your friends。 Like。。。 you specifically。 And then that apparently is meant to either validate or invalidate the "Why"。 And if it does invalidate it, you then take what came out of the discussion with friends and work with your partner to then shift that into your "Why"。And then after the "Why" comes the "How"。。。 These are the different activities done through your "Why"。 But those items are limited to a specific number。 If you have more six or whatever, it won't work out。 Because reasons。¯\_(ツ)_/¯Honestly, I was pretty checked-out by the time I got towards that section of the book。I appreciate that they authors attempted to give plenty of examples of stories, "Why" statements, etc。, but all felt somewhere between being contrived for the book or lacked the context to be useful。 One example is the selfish guy who gave a bunch of spare change to a girl running a lemonade stand and then broke into tears, discovering his "Why" was to inspire others about what is possible。 Or something like that。 I mean, it's clearly memorable, seeing as how I'm mentioning it in this review。 But who could possibly relate to that?Similarly, some of the "Why" statements just left me wondering how they ended up like they did。 As an example, Simon Sinek, the guy whose TED Talk led to the creation of this book, has a statement of, "To inspire people to do the things that inspire them so that, together, we can change our world。" That seems kind of wordy and it was never clear to me why it wasn't simplified to just, "To inspire people so that, together, we can change our world。" There probably is a reason why it's not like that, but that type of reasoning isn't something I was able to find within this book。Clearly I am not a big fan of this book。。。 I think creating a systemized approach to Start With Why is a good goal。 This just didn't resonate with me。If I do end up finding a partner and getting some value out of this book, I'll update my review。 But for now。。。。 meh。 I'd recommend skipping this one。 。。。more

This books moves from the theory of Start With Why。 This is a step by step workbook that is helpful in nailing down the details for personal or business purposes。

I listened twice and I decide to buy it because I loved this book。 Simon Sinek makes me think a lot。This book is a great analysis of the own life。 Do you have to make a change, to know : What am I doing here? Why I do what I do?How I do for。。。?Anyway, This book talks about work experiences but do you can imagine those situations that happened in one moment of your life。I tried to implement these exercises in my own work-life even though didn't work right now。This book is good for a work team as w I listened twice and I decide to buy it because I loved this book。 Simon Sinek makes me think a lot。This book is a great analysis of the own life。 Do you have to make a change, to know : What am I doing here? Why I do what I do?How I do for。。。?Anyway, This book talks about work experiences but do you can imagine those situations that happened in one moment of your life。I tried to implement these exercises in my own work-life even though didn't work right now。This book is good for a work team as well! 。。。more

Mind-blowing inspiring masterpiece

Feels like more of a quick reference book companion for Start with Why。 A lot of it is actually how to set up a room for group activities when coming up with a tribe why, which I skimmed over。

Worth reading。 Really helps you come up with a mission statement for life which is great。 Simon Sinek did not have much to do with the writing on this, for better or worse。

I found this book to be a very practical collection of guiding questions to "find your why", however, it was less enticing that the book kept mentioning the author's products every so often like an advertisement。 I found this book to be a very practical collection of guiding questions to "find your why", however, it was less enticing that the book kept mentioning the author's products every so often like an advertisement。 。。。more

Why the bad reviews? This is a standalone book/guide for either helping an individual discover their "why" or an entire organization/team。 It's far more thorough than it needs to be, and if you're a consultant or HR person doing this sort of work, I'd buy it before they decide there's more money in running the courses and "certifying" people to do it themselves, etc。。 Or, maybe they'll do all those things, but point being I'm glad I own the book。 It manages expectations of time, difficulty, and Why the bad reviews? Better for organizations or people with a lot of friends as the practicals involve heavy interpersonal interactions。 The goal is worthy, though。

Note: I skipped the group Why discovery chapters since I was looking for a personal career development book。 I read a lot of leadership books and by now most of them sound the same to me。 This book could have been an article, it has too much "fluff" in it。 It tries to appeal to a wide audience and it lacks depth。 The authors focus on finding your WHY which sounds like an audacious, personal and life-changing task。 Then they suggest that you start sharing it with strangers on a plane (to be fair Note: I skipped the group Why discovery chapters since I was looking for a personal career development book。 I read a lot of leadership books and by now most of them sound the same to me。 This book could have been an article, it has too much "fluff" in it。 It tries to appeal to a wide audience and it lacks depth。 The authors focus on finding your WHY which sounds like an audacious, personal and life-changing task。 Then they suggest that you start sharing it with strangers on a plane (to be fair - they suggest sharing it with everyone who asks you "what you do" but you get the point)。 They focus on finding your WHY but not so much on what to do after you've found it。 I know, this is exactly what the book title promises so I guess they are working on a sequel "what to do with your WHY after you've found it"。 If you are thinking to read this book for the purposes of personal career development, I beg you, read The Career Stories Method: 11 Steps to Find Your Ideal Career—and Discover Your Awesome Self in the Process instead。 It uses a similar approach - finding your inner purpose through storytelling but it is focused on career stories and does it through self-awareness/mindfulness journey。 。。。more

I read this book in preparation for an activity I am doing for work。 I hoped it would help with our motivation to find a purpose or "why" we do our job to combat burnout。 There was some helpful information and structure, but this could have been a much shorter book with less repetition。 "The goal is for each individual to work for a company in which they fit the culture, share the values, believe in the vision, and work on a team in which they feel like they are valued and valuable。" I read this book in preparation for an activity I am doing for work。 I hoped it would help with our motivation to find a purpose or "why" we do our job to combat burnout。 There was some helpful information and structure, but this could have been a much shorter book with less repetition。 "The goal is for each individual to work for a company in which they fit the culture, share the values, believe in the vision, and work on a team in which they feel like they are valued and valuable。" 。。。more
