Summary

Taking place over the course of an eventful week in 1963 Hong Kong, James Clavell's Noble House is a masterfully woven novel of true suspense。

Ian Dunross, the current tai-pan of the illustrious yet financially troubled Struan empire, is racing to undo the damage his predecessor left behind and to once again stand on stable ground。 And he'll do whatever it takes--including striking a hard-fought deal with an American millionaire。 But his rival, Quillan Gornt, has other plans。 Suddenly caught in a dubious plot involving Soviet spies, Hong Kong's criminal underground, and the hostile takeover of his company, Dunross holds nothing back in the fight for the Noble House。

Espionage, mayhem, and high-stakes betrayals make Noble House Clavell's most prolific and imaginatively crafted narrative in the Asian Saga。

Easy to listen to over months of commuting, but lacks the charm and emotional investment of Shogun or Tai-Pan。 It was interesting to see Clavell transform his previous political intrigues into the cat-and-mouse of the Cold War days of espionage and modern corporate maneuverings。 The resolution was predictable, but not dissatisfying。

Not my favorite but enjoyable even so。The dialogue drags a little bit in places。 I don't really need a blow-by-blow detailed explanation of the intricacies of gold smuggling in Asia, for example。 A few of the incidents, and the characters' responses to them, stretch credibility quite a lot。 (It's difficult to imagine anyone surviving a horrendous fire, spending hours rescuing other people, then up early the next day and back at work as if nothing had happened) Still I did find this novel enjoyab Not my favorite but enjoyable even so。The dialogue drags a little bit in places。 I don't really need a blow-by-blow detailed explanation of the intricacies of gold smuggling in Asia, for example。 A few of the incidents, and the characters' responses to them, stretch credibility quite a lot。 (It's difficult to imagine anyone surviving a horrendous fire, spending hours rescuing other people, then up early the next day and back at work as if nothing had happened) Still I did find this novel enjoyable reading。 。。。more

Like all of James Clavell Noble House is extremely fun。 It is not literary, no one in a university class will call it a "text" and yet I found myself learning about life from it。 Taken with a grain of salt, of course。 Clavell just had it as a storyteller。 Worth a summer read, that is for sure。 Like all of James Clavell Noble House is extremely fun。 It is not literary, no one in a university class will call it a "text" and yet I found myself learning about life from it。 Taken with a grain of salt, of course。 Clavell just had it as a storyteller。 Worth a summer read, that is for sure。 。。。more

I liked the book and it is as good as the others in the series。 I gave it only 4 stars because it was too long。 There were a lot of asides and minor storylines that could have been cut。

I guess I'll have to go back and read the other Clavell works。 I really liked Taipan and I enjoyed Noble House even more。 Although the rich tapestry of characters and plot were, at times nearly overwhelming, in the end, the complex picture that Clavell paints is the Hong Kong I remember, and lament。 Time marches on and the Hong Kong that was shall never be again。I'm always sad when I reach the end of a good book。 However, I do like to imagine an American woman as Taipan of the Noble House。 I do I guess I'll have to go back and read the other Clavell works。 I really liked Taipan and I enjoyed Noble House even more。 Although the rich tapestry of characters and plot were, at times nearly overwhelming, in the end, the complex picture that Clavell paints is the Hong Kong I remember, and lament。 Time marches on and the Hong Kong that was shall never be again。I'm always sad when I reach the end of a good book。 However, I do like to imagine an American woman as Taipan of the Noble House。 I don't think Clavell lived to write #6。 If I'm wrong I'll check that one out as well。 Thank you Mr。 Clavell。 。。。more

I couldn't take it。 I used to like James Clavell, but this is a kind of revolting adulation of wealthy deal-makers, none of whom seem particularly admirable or interesting。 oh well。 I couldn't take it。 I used to like James Clavell, but this is a kind of revolting adulation of wealthy deal-makers, none of whom seem particularly admirable or interesting。 oh well。 。。。more

Who can Ian trust? How will he secure Noble House's place in history? Can he last the week? And what about Gornt, Ian's sworn enemy who will do anything in his second best company, Rothwell-Gornt to tear Noble House down at all costs? As all of these events and people collide, we are left with several messages and life lessons I found so wonderful I must share them here。 One huge lesson in this book and in Tai Pan is the concept of "joss"。 It essentially means fate, though Tai Pan clarifies this and in Noble House they live by it。 I love this concept, because seeing these people experience horrible tragedies- nearly all of them are World War II veterans- they know what suffering is。 And they face life with an air of, "fate is fate。 Gods are gods- sometimes they're sleeping, sometimes they can't help you, sometimes they're awake and ready to be there for you。 Whatever happens, I will endure。 I will last。 These events are just joss。 I will never stop fighting。 Life is too precious for that。" There is an overwhelming love of life in this book, and there is an overwhelming sense of you can overcome anything, and if you can't, well that's fate。 If you can, that's fate too。 But never stop trying。 I can't possibly explain more of this plot without bungling anything, as this book is over 1,300 pages long。 But I will say that is is quite possibly the best book I've ever read, and I must say it can double as a self help book too。 So read Tai Pan, which is absolutely a banger and covers much of the same emotional and life lessons and then slide right into Noble House。 。。。more
