Summary

Thinking with Type is the definitive guide to using typography in visual communication。 Ellen Lupton provides clear and focused guidance on how letters, words, and paragraphs should be aligned, spaced, ordered, and shaped。 The book covers all typography essentials, from typefaces and type families, to kerning and tracking, to using a grid。 Visual examples show how to be inventive within systems of typographic form, including what the rules are, and how to break them。

This revised edition includes forty-eight pages of new content with the latest information on:

• style sheets for print and the web
• the use of ornaments and captions
• lining and non-lining numerals
• the use of small caps and enlarged capitals
• mixing typefaces
• font formats and font licensing

Plus, new eye-opening demonstrations of basic typography design with letters, helpful exercises, and dozens of additional illustrations。

Thinking with Type is the typography book for everyone: designers, writers, editors, students, and anyone else who works with words。 If you love font and lettering books, Ellen Lupton's guide reveals the way typefaces are constructed and how to use them most effectively。

Jason Kinn

At times very deep, talking about Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida and the idea of the text -- and at times whimsical, with full color prints of Japanese rock band posters。 The author demonstrates her concepts graphically。 A grown up picture book。

Kindle edition warningThis is just a review of the kindle version: despite the book being great, the pictures are all in low resolution, turning an otherwise great read in a constant punch in the eye。 Unacceptable for a book catered towards creatives

Really great book! Lupton takes a more "historic" approach to learning about typefaces and fonts, text blocks, and forms of layout, but I still learned a lot from this book。 Really liked her crisp and concise style of writing (loved how the summaries were usually never more than a page long, yet still conveyed a basic, yet detailed impression on various topics in graphic design)。 It's also a good book to sift through to see the development of certain design elements via its visual examples。 Over Really great book! Yay, finally a typography text with practical helpful knowledge, great illustrations, & straightforward advice。 There were a few pages, usually in the chapter introductions, that felt flowery & less informative, but overall, it was a detailed read。 I liked the sections detonated as exercises, but I wish they were actually in-book practice examples。 There were sections I wish Lupton made more detailed (ex。 the Golden ratio/section) & others I could do without (ex。 the whole Appendix about proofre Yay, finally a typography text with practical helpful knowledge, great illustrations, & straightforward advice。 There were a few pages, usually in the chapter introductions, that felt flowery & less informative, but overall, it was a detailed read。 I liked the sections detonated as exercises, but I wish they were actually in-book practice examples。 There were sections I wish Lupton made more detailed (ex。 the Golden ratio/section) & others I could do without (ex。 the whole Appendix about proofreading)。 There were also moments when the text felt like visual-overload。 This happened often at the beginning, so maybe I just got used to it & started ignoring random quotes just littered throughout。Overall, a good read for any designer or even just creative。 。。。more

A beautiful manual and meditation on type, space, intention, and design。

Second time reading it。 This book lives on my shelf and I will absolutely refer to it as a well-loved manual over the years。

Digging deeperAn excellent book on the use and technical function of type。 I learned quite a bit from it, both from a historical perspective as well as tips for InDesign

3。5 stars rounded up。 A lot of useful info, but sometimes got a little too mired in history and esoterica。

1/5 starsYou know how some writers can say so much without saying anything at all? That basically sums up how I feel about this one。 It also didn't help matters that the analogies in this textbook were horrible。 1/5 starsYou know how some writers can say so much without saying anything at all? As the volumes of information exploded, so did the variety of tools used to convey it, starting with letters: the building block of our ever-expanding, textual universe。 This elegantly written handbook both explains and demonstrates the subtle yet powerful rules of typography。

I strongly recommend this book for designers, motion designers and other artists。 This book helped me a lot。 No other thoughts, just get it。

This book is a design bible。 Be a good Christian, read it。

Thinking With Type is fun for the eyes and for the most part a good primer on multiple aspects of working with words。 It stumbles hard in few place, making several obviously wrong assertions and occasionally offering dubious advice。 Interestingly, the most flagrant errors are concentrated in the content new to the expanded second edition。 Finding a first edition may be advisable。Of the book’s three sections, the second (“Text”) is by far the strongest, with crisp and thought‐provoking essays lik Thinking With Type is fun for the eyes and for the most part a good primer on multiple aspects of working with words。 It stumbles hard in few place, making several obviously wrong assertions and occasionally offering dubious advice。 Interestingly, the most flagrant errors are concentrated in the content new to the expanded second edition。 Finding a first edition may be advisable。Of the book’s three sections, the second (“Text”) is by far the strongest, with crisp and thought‐provoking essays like “Errors and Ownership” and “Birth of the User”。2021 addendum: Shaping Text covers largely the same content and is a vastly superior book。 I strongly encourage anyone considering reading Thinking With Type to try that book instead。 。。。more

This book covers: History of typographic design。 Theory of typographic design。 And because the author is the designer, practical application of typographic design。 Need I say more?

It has some good references and as a self-taught designer for about a decade now I’m always searching for resources。 There are a few pages that are directly useful (the anatomy of letters and tips on leading) but this is mostly a historical and theoretical book。 Not really what I’m looking for but there are some simpatico(word of the day) reasons to reference it again。

Didn't read this cover to cover。 I expected it to be more helpful than I found it to be。 I might go back in the future and read it again。 Didn't read this cover to cover。 I expected it to be more helpful than I found it to be。 I might go back in the future and read it again。 。。。more

I thought it was an excellent introduction to various things to do with type, and the "free advice" section at the end made me laugh at loud。 The prodigious footnotes are also helpful for future resources。 I thought the "grid" section at the end was kind of unnecessary; most of the meat of the book was definitely toward the beginning and middle。 I thought it was an excellent introduction to various things to do with type, and the "free advice" section at the end made me laugh at loud。 The prodigious footnotes are also helpful for future resources。 I thought the "grid" section at the end was kind of unnecessary; most of the meat of the book was definitely toward the beginning and middle。 。。。more
