Fierce, determined, dangerous。 No wonder her soul called to his。

As Chief of Security of Ixia, Valek has spent the last fifteen years keeping Commander Ambrose and his citizens safe。 With his complex network of spies, informers, and soldiers, it’s his job to hunt down and capture criminals, including the intriguing Yelena。

Sensing there is more to the story of why she killed a general’s son, Valek arranges for Yelena to become the Commander’s new food taster, training her in the delicate art of detecting poisons。 As mysteries and a devious plot to harm the Commander unravel, Yelena’s presence becomes crucial。 Will her intelligence, stubbornness, and survivor instincts be a help to Valek’s investigation, or a hinderance?

A companion novel to Poison Study , The Study of Poisons reveals Valek’s side of the story。 Return to the world of Ixia and discover just how the lovely Yelena got Valek’s cold heart pumping!

I absolutely loved listening to Valek’s POV in The Study of Poisons。 It was a perfect match to Poison Study and (like so many others) I look forward to tandem reading them when my physical book arrives。Listening to Valek’s insecurities was a true authenticity I hadn’t associated with him until now。Raphael Corkhill was a splendid narrator and definitely gives me visions of how I imagined Valek to sound like。Masterfully written, well done Maria and thank you。…hopefully it will not be too long unti I absolutely loved listening to Valek’s POV in The Study of Poisons。 It was a perfect match to Poison Study and (like so many others) I look forward to tandem reading them when my physical book arrives。Listening to Valek’s insecurities was a true authenticity I hadn’t associated with him until now。Raphael Corkhill was a splendid narrator and definitely gives me visions of how I imagined Valek to sound like。Masterfully written, well done Maria and thank you。…hopefully it will not be too long until we have the full suite of the Chronicles of Ixia in Valek’s POV!🤣😉🤣 。。。more

4。5/5。0Oh my goodness, this story was an absolute joy! It has been over a decade since I first picked up the book, “Poison Study”。 I remember it grabbed me from the first page and I have considered it one of my top 10, all-time favorites ever since。 So when I realized this book takes us back into that amazing world - but from Valek’s (the male MC) POV, I couldn’t wait! And it did not disappoint one iota。 It is absolutely fabulous! And weirdly, I think everyone, whether they have read the first book recently, haven’t read it in forever or have never read the Poison study series, will thoroughly enjoy this story。 For me, it had been so long that I remembered the characters and their personalities but didn’t remember the exact plotline enough to know what was coming next, so it was like catching up with old friends but learning all kinds of new stuff! I was especially impressed, considering it is being told from a male POV, at how well it actually read like a male! That might sound odd, but so many times when an author writes a book from the male POV, the voice still sounds female (or from the author’s voice… which is often female)。 This one doesn’t do that。 Valek’s thoughts, his actions etc。 read exactly how one would expect a man in his position to think and act。 For instance, we don’t get a lot of flowery descriptions, it is facts and explanations of the events, period。 Valek’s doesn’t spend time waxing poetic, he brushes over stuff like what everyone looks like in every meeting he is in。 He doesn’t know how to “win” Yelena so he often says things that come across as harsh, yet he doesn’t apologize。 It is who he is。 Still, we see his thoughts and they are filled with concern, care and eventually love。 He also acknowledges that… to himself。The only (very small) glitch (if one could even call it that) is in *Slight spoiler alert!* the revelation over Yelena’s magic。 It was brushed over so quickly with no explanation that anyone who hasn’t read the previous books would be terribly confused。 It came out of nowhere, and we didn’t even get to learn if it was a minor amount, or a major gift。Still, the book is written so well that even the most critical readers will look over that and just relish a story very well told! 。。。more

I enjoyed seeing Valeks point of view but i definitely think you’d have to read poison study first to really understand what was happening。

I don’t typically write reviews but I feel compelled to share。 This is the best POV switch I have read。 Many authors are trying this but they are less successful。 I love Poison Study and have read it so often I know all the lines。 All the dialogue matched and the scenes。 You have always wondered what Valek was thinking since you read the line “I have loved you since the Fire Festival”。 There is so much happening behind the scenes and all along Valek had Yalana on his mind。 He loved her nearly be I don’t typically write reviews but I feel compelled to share。 This is the best POV switch I have read。 Many authors are trying this but they are less successful。 I love Poison Study and have read it so often I know all the lines。 All the dialogue matched and the scenes。 You have always wondered what Valek was thinking since you read the line “I have loved you since the Fire Festival”。 There is so much happening behind the scenes and all along Valek had Yalana on his mind。 He loved her nearly before knowing her。 If you loved Poison Study, as I did, you will automatically love this story。 It completes a piece of the story you didn’t know you were missing。 My heart was so full and happy at the end。 Yes, this is what I needed。 。。。more

Finished this book in one day, and it was excellent! I highly recommend reading Poison Study first, but you can absolutely read this as a stand alone if you wanted。 In this book, we get the events of PS from Valek’s POV and it makes you love his dark little spy heart so much! He is such a great character。 Overall, it’s a great adventure even if you’re new to Valek and Yelena’s story。

The original Study Series (which later expanded to become the Chronicles of Ixia) is by far one of my favorites。 Valek has been my book boyfriend all this time。 Genuinely, no other fantasy guy has held a candle to him。 So you could imagine my delight when I found out there was going to be a book from his point of view! This book is purely fan-service, as it doesn't really bring anything new to the table。 That being said, it's still such a fun read! I don't think I had truly processed how rough Valek's life was during this time。 Yet, reading about his thoughts and feelings has made me fallen in love with him all over again。I knew from that first book with his POV that I needed more Valek。 Well, I'm going to say it again: Give us more Valek! I would read every single one of Yelena's books from his POV。 Mind you, Fire Study would be rough。。。 But all the more reason! I remember how they cross paths from time to time! And I really can't handle the end of Study of Poisons。 (It was very well done, but I need more! I want us to have a play-by-play of what will happen in a future book- instead of the fade to black。) Pretty please?! Valek deserves all the love。 He deserves to retire。 And for all that is good in the literary world, I know Maria V Snyder could deliver! She surely did deliver with Study of Poisons! OH! Right! Back to the book: IF YOU LOVE VALEK - IF YOU LOVE THE STUDY SERIES - IF YOU LOVE ASSASSINS AND SPIES AND MISUNDERSTOOD MEN WHO HAVE ALL THE FEELS: Please read this book! That is all。 。。。more

This was a long awaited book, when Maria V。 Snyder had announced it to us in the Soulfinders Facebook page, and we have been Squeeing ever since! A wonderful addition to The Poison Study series! Now, off to re-read/re-listen my books/ebooks/audibles of the series! You can never have too many versions of this wonderful fun, adventurous, and empowering series! 。。。more

Although I was involved in bringing this book to the rest of the world (in my own small way) my review is based on the story alone。 I have loved this series since I first read it 10 years ago, and was thrilled to read Poison Study from Valek’s perspective。 From the advanced copy to the polished audiobook, I enjoyed every minute spent reading this book, and I know fans of the series will feel the same。

The poison study series is one of my favourites of all time, I’ve reread all the books countless times。 I was so excited when this book was announced and it did not disappoint! Thank you Maria!

Where to begin? This book was everything I had hoped it would be。 Revisiting this world felt like coming home and viewing from Valek’s POV was such a treat。 We get a more comprehensive view of the happenings in the castle that Yelena wasn’t privy to。 I might have cried hearing “the end。 Again”

Brooooooo!!!! I got to read the ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) of this novel! My teenage heart is screaming from no longer having to wait for this book to exist! I have waited over a decade for this book! One word。 Valek! The world always needs more Valek。 Fierce, determined, dangerous。 Finally being able to see his perspective, his behind the scene missions and him falling in love with Yelena was like reading Poison Study for the first time all over again!

Thank you so much to Maria V。 Snyder for an early copy of this in exchange for an honest review!50 million/5 stars! So let me be clear: "Poison Study" is my favorite YA book of all time。 It is my most-read book and Yelena and Valek were my first couple goals。 So heading into this I was already majorly fangirling。 This book did not disappoint。 It was amazing seeing the events of "Poison Study" through Valek's POV。 Valek is a master assassin and poison master。 Because of this, he is seemingly cold Thank you so much to Maria V。 Snyder for an early copy of this in exchange for an honest review!50 million/5 stars! It has been a few years since Maria wrote a story in this fabulous world and I was SO excited when she announced this book。 You have no idea! I read them all years ago, and to this day, it remains one of my favorite series。 I love Valek to pieces but with his more reserved nature, it wasn't easy to grasp the full extend of his personality from Yelena's POV。 The Study of Poisons is a blessing in that regard! I read Poison Study in 2016, so even though I know I loved it, the details of the plot were long gone from my memory, so reading it from Valek's POV was like reading a completely new story。 And it was, because Valek spends so much time apart from Yelena in this adventure, we really had no idea what the former assassin had been up to in the meantime。 Valek is a very serious and dedicated man and it's abundantly clear he was living an emotionless life before Yelena came along。 Duty is his mistress and I enjoyed watching him slowly fall for the stubborn and surprising Yelena。 Be warned though, Ari, Janco & Yelena's fun banter and personalities aren't as present in this book as they were in previous ones so the tone of this novel is much more grave。 Valek will chuckle and crack an half-joke here and there, but overall, the mood is much more somber than what we are used to。 There is a very present air of mystery and intrigue。Valek is smart, strong, honorable, dedicated and all of his qualities really shine through。 I must say, I am overwhelmed by the need to reread the original story, Poison Study, and I never re-read books。 I read The Study of Poisons in under 24 hours。 I honestly couldn't put it down。 I thoroughly enjoyed the ride! 。。。more

I am beyond happy that this book now exists! Maria V。 Snyder built a beautiful world with intriguing characters and politics。 I fell in love with the story and characters when I read Poison Study years ago。 It’s so exciting to revisit my favorite characters, who feel like old friends。 Reading Valeks POV, and seeing his true feelings, makes me so giddy! The characters and story will capture your heart。

As a huge fan of Poison Study, I was so excited to find out Snyder was writing a version of it from Valek’s point of view! We get many of the same scenes from PS, but they have so much added depth because we now see what Valek was doing behind the scenes。 There is also an excellent new subplot involving his corps! I highly recommend this for anyone that’s a fan of the Study Series。 Thank you to the publisher for the ARC!
