Not a Batman fan, but this was incredibly well done as someone taking over the biggest character in comics。 It pretty quickly goes big as you should and the story continues to revel in the fun comics can have with a story while still being very much a Batman story。 The additional stories and art in the back are a big plus。

Elliott Frank

The best Batman run since Scott Snyder’s Court of Owls。

[2。3]This is silly to me。 It has several of the things that ruin a Batman story。 Some of them are Superman and outer space ridiculousness。 Why do they misunderstand the appeal of Batman? This story is any other generic super hero story。 It wasnt woke and preachy though, which was a plus。Jimenez art was brilliant as well。

Boy, this was fun!Whether Zdarsky is exploring the Batman’s backup personality or the Penguin’s unconventional retirement, there’s a lot to enjoy。 It all does feel a little too celebratory of the Batman (Batman’s most dangerous enemy is Batman, so Batman makes a backup Batman to take down Batman in case Batman goes bad)。 I don’t like how circular comics get - stories from decades past getting visited over and over and over again。 It reminds me of the worst indulgences of the Matt Smith Doctor Wh Boy, this was fun!Whether Zdarsky is exploring the Batman’s backup personality or the Penguin’s unconventional retirement, there’s a lot to enjoy。 It all does feel a little too celebratory of the Batman (Batman’s most dangerous enemy is Batman, so Batman makes a backup Batman to take down Batman in case Batman goes bad)。 I don’t like how circular comics get - stories from decades past getting visited over and over and over again。 It reminds me of the worst indulgences of the Matt Smith Doctor Who years。But at the end of the day, those indulgences are only worth knocking a single star off。 This is a fun book。 。。。more

Considering Chip Zdarsky has been doing wonders with his current run on Daredevil, it is only a matter of time before he was going to tackle Batman, who is the closest DC analogue to the Man Without Fear。 For the first time, a writer is writing both DC and Marvel’s brooding vigilantes concurrently, which is quite the challenge as both characters require their creators to be on their A-game。 However, Zdarsky’s debut of the mainline Batman book isn’t his first Bat-outing, having previously written Considering Chip Zdarsky has been doing wonders with his current run on Daredevil, it is only a matter of time before he was going to tackle Batman, who is the closest DC analogue to the Man Without Fear。 For the first time, a writer is writing both DC and Marvel’s brooding vigilantes concurrently, which is quite the challenge as both characters require their creators to be on their A-game。 However, Zdarsky’s debut of the mainline Batman book isn’t his first Bat-outing, having previously written for Batman: Urban Legends and collaborated with artist Carmine Di Giandomenico on a new version of the character’s origin story: The Knight。 Taking over after Joshua Williamson’s reign on the title, what does Zdarsky bring to the Caped Crusader? Please click here for my full review。 。。。more

Chip Zdarsky makes his leap from Marvel's Daredevil to DC's Darede-I mean, Batman, for a brand new run on the title that pits Batman against one of his biggest challenges yet。 Batman has a plan for everything - even himself。 When an unstoppable robot named Failsafe activates and targets him for death, it'll take the entire might of the Bat Family and what remains of the Justice League to take it down, and even that might not be enough。It's not the first time Batman's mistakes have come back to h Chip Zdarsky makes his leap from Marvel's Daredevil to DC's Darede-I mean, Batman, for a brand new run on the title that pits Batman against one of his biggest challenges yet。 Batman has a plan for everything - even himself。 When an unstoppable robot named Failsafe activates and targets him for death, it'll take the entire might of the Bat Family and what remains of the Justice League to take it down, and even that might not be enough。It's not the first time Batman's mistakes have come back to haunt him, so Failsafe's not new in that regard。 It's also not the first time Batman's had to fight something that knows all of his moves before he's going to make them, or even the first time he's pushed everyone away to deal with the bad guys on his own。 But Zdarsky's tight script, incredibly stupid (in a good way) set pieces, and great inner dialogue for Bruce make Failsafe feel fresh and new when it really shouldn't。 Some of the plot gets a bit outlandish, and veers into BatGod territory, but it skirts it well enough without making things too crazy, with explanations offered for even the most ridiculous of outcomes。 Failsafe's a bit bland in itself as a villain (but it's a robot, so y'kn0w), but I loved the way Zdarsky wove Tim Drake into the plot, as well as Superman and the rest of the Justice League at times too。 I also applaud DC's restraint not to do a whole 'Failsafe Has Taken Over Gotham' style event in the vein of Joker War and Fear State so soon on the heels of those events。On artwork we have Jorge Jimenez, who remains incomparable。 We might not be able to get him on every arc of this book, but the ones he does show up for are well worth the wait, because the guy's just so damn good。 This book sings through the action sequences, dances through the emotional beats, and flies when things get even wackier than usual。Failsafe doesn't try and reinvent the wheel, it's just trying to tell a fun, ridiculous Batman story as best it can。 Both Zdarsky and Jimenez are on the same page, and this book will have you turning yours, without a doubt。 。。。more

Read this as the issues came out - first time having Batman on my pull list in nearly a decade since I've generally been in a perpetual state of Bat-fatigue。 Chip Zdarsky's Batman is fun blockbuster storytelling with some cool callbacks to better Batman runs, but lacking a bit in depth。 It's always fun seeing Batman wriggle his way out of tight situations and this first arc has plenty of that。 The artwork by Jimenez is amazing as is to be expected。The back up stories with Catwoman and Zur En Arr Read this as the issues came out - first time having Batman on my pull list in nearly a decade since I've generally been in a perpetual state of Bat-fatigue。 Chip Zdarsky's Batman is fun blockbuster storytelling with some cool callbacks to better Batman runs, but lacking a bit in depth。 It's always fun seeing Batman wriggle his way out of tight situations and this first arc has plenty of that。 The artwork by Jimenez is amazing as is to be expected。The back up stories with Catwoman and Zur En Arrh are nice too。 Nothing memorable, but enjoyable all around。 。。。more

It’s only the first arc but golly, this might be the most captivating Batman volume I’ve read since Snyder’s The Court of Owls。 And Jimenez absolutely nails it with the art。

Much better than I was expecting。 Good job, chums。

There is some nice character stuff with Robin in here but Batman literally falls from the moon without a suit or ship and lands on Earth like he was skydiving, and it doubles down on the Batman is so prepared he can beat anyone but himself idea a little too hard。 Beautiful art by Jiminez but this is possibly one of the stupidest Batman stories I have ever read。

Seth

Gets off to a great start but kinda peters out toward the end。 To his credit, Zdarsky is trying big things with his Batman and is trying his damndest to make this character and this world his own。 The Zur En Arrh backup was a lot of fun。

Read this in individual issues。 It's basically another Batman "Doh!" moment a la "War Games" where this time it's a plan to take down himself, should he ever go rogue。 Entertaining enough, with solid artwork。 The Catwoman back-up story was a bit silly, but the Zur En Arrh one was solid, with appropriately modified artwork as Batman flips between the two identities (three, if you count Bruce Wayne!) This will definitely go into the DC Archives as one of the greatest Batman stories of modern times。 When was the last time the classic JLA story, 'Tower of Babel' referenced? We've had HOW MANY Crisis' since that storyline? Still, this took it and dusted off a classic idea and gave it some new pieces to add to the puzzle。 We even get some Tim Drake respect in this story。 Tim's always been the Robin who stuck around。 The bland, reliable Robin that always followed orders and was ALWAYS around。 Nob This will definitely go into the DC Archives as one of the greatest Batman stories of modern times。 When was the last time the classic JLA story, 'Tower of Babel' referenced? Answer to a question "What if Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder had a bat-child?" We saw everything before。 I expected more personal take on Batman from Chip Zdarsky, not a "Batman vs forgotten super robot built by Batman with so much power he can beat anyone in any universe with one finger in his robot ass"。 Too bad nobody knew about him during for example Darkseid invasion。 They could just send him and go for brunch。 Meh。 Answer to a question "What if Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder had a bat-child?" Legitimately the best Batman ongoing we've had since Tom King left the book for me。 Writing is a fantastic balance of coolness and creative characters, story is subversive and awesome and the art is phenomenal and Jorge at his most formidable yet! Absolutely some of the best Batman we've had in a long time。 The main story arc Failsafe has the tone of an early Scott Snyder tale。 Plenty of comic callbacks while in itself adding much to the long history of Batman。 Does a lot with Batman's relationship with the Justice League, will work especially well for fans of "Tower of Babel"。 An especially great one for fans of Robin, I myself found that aspect to be a highlight。 Zdarsky also impresses with the unbelievable backup story I am a Gun。 With Absolutely some of the best Batman we've had in a long time。 The main story arc Failsafe has the tone of an early Scott Snyder tale。 Plenty of comic callbacks while in itself adding much to the long history of Batman。 Does a lot with Batman's relationship with the Justice League, will work especially well for fans of "Tower of Babel"。 An especially great one for fans of Robin, I myself found that aspect to be a highlight。 Zdarsky also impresses with the unbelievable backup story I am a Gun。 With breathtaking artwork (Leonardo Romero) that evokes both Mazzucchelli and Dick Sprang。 A psychological tale about Batman's invention ofZ ur-En-Arrh, this story is the highlight of the book for me personally。 。。。more
