Summary

This is the story of a happy family whose life suddenly fell apart, never to be the same again。 Of two devoted parents plunged into a waking nightmare as their eleven-year-old daughter stopped speaking and eating, and her younger sister struggled to cope。

As they desperately searched for answers, they began to see how their children's suffering reached far beyond medical diagnoses。 This crisis was not theirs alone: they were burned-out people on a burned-out planet。

Our House is on Fire is the story of how, amid forces that tried to silence them, one family found ways to strengthen, heal, and gain courage from the love they had for each other - and for the living world。 It is a parable of hope and determination in an emergency that affects us all。

Endalegi mõnevõrra üllatuseks - mulle suht meeldis。 Kuna keskkonnateema mind ei köida, siis erinevalt enamikest arvustajatest huvitas mind just nimelt ema perspektiiv, võitlused kooli, laste ja meedikutega。 Üllatas, et kas tõesti XXI sajandil on võimalik teha meditsiinilisi uuringuid laste kohta ilma tüdrukuid hõlmamata。 Info Greta ja kliimaliikumise kohta oli boonuseks, Beatast oleks tahtnud rohkem kuulda。 Ka isa vaatepunkti oleks võinud rohkem tutvustada。

Some paragraphs/chapters were not my favourites, but the whole topic about climate and how Greta became the person we got to know was very insightful and interesting。 It was brutal and important and another wake-up call。 Cannot recommend this book to enough people。

The climate change is a big deal - as in, CRISIS - and this Swedish family, specifically 15-year-old Greta, has made more of the planet's population aware of the seriousness of it in the recent past - and ongoing。This book is written mainly by her mother and is in scenes rather than chapters。 Readers are taken through the past few years so that we get to know Greta, her family, and her cause。 Her passion for saving our planet is real, the crisis is real, the need for change is real。 There is not The climate change is a big deal - as in, CRISIS - and this Swedish family, specifically 15-year-old Greta, has made more of the planet's population aware of the seriousness of it in the recent past - and ongoing。This book is written mainly by her mother and is in scenes rather than chapters。 Readers are taken through the past few years so that we get to know Greta, her family, and her cause。 Her passion for saving our planet is real, the crisis is real, the need for change is real。 There is not much time left to make a positive and effective difference。 I read this book for the 52 Books challenge and used it for the prompt "featuring the environment。" 。。。more

Excellent book about family stressors for parents of special needs children。 Also traces a family's awakening to the climate crisis。 I found the contrast between the slow pace of special needs services and the urgency of awareness insightful。 Excellent book about family stressors for parents of special needs children。 Also traces a family's awakening to the climate crisis。 I found the contrast between the slow pace of special needs services and the urgency of awareness insightful。 。。。more

This was a powerful book。 Think what you will of Greta and her family, but this book will open your eyes quite a bit。 The family really struggles with the illnesses of all the family members (all of them are on different parts of the autism spectrum, for better and for worse)。 It brings perspective。 Greta is not a celebrity。 She is a girl who struggled all her life。 Once she realized something - that our house is on fire and everybody's still at the kitchen table playing cards - she cannot let g This was a powerful book。 Think what you will of Greta and her family, but this book will open your eyes quite a bit。 The family really struggles with the illnesses of all the family members (all of them are on different parts of the autism spectrum, for better and for worse)。 It brings perspective。 Greta is not a celebrity。 She is a girl who struggled all her life。 Once she realized something - that our house is on fire and everybody's still at the kitchen table playing cards - she cannot let go。 She and her family will do everything they can to keep reminding us of the fact that fire's blazing。I sold my Finnair stock after about the midway point of this book。 Not sure if the future belongs to airlines anymore。 Or if it should。 。。。more

I feel like it’s hard to rate this book。 One the one hand I greatly enjoyed it and found it really interesting。 On the other, I came to this book to learn about the issues our climate is facing and how I can make a difference and no guidance was given。 It is very negative about climate change, and I feel very negative too。 I agree that hope will not save our planet, but it almost feels like this book is telling me to give up。 I don’t want to give up on our planet, I want to fight for change but I feel like it’s hard to rate this book。 One the one hand I greatly enjoyed it and found it really interesting。 On the other, I came to this book to learn about the issues our climate is facing and how I can make a difference and no guidance was given。 It is very negative about climate change, and I feel very negative too。 I agree that hope will not save our planet, but it almost feels like this book is telling me to give up。 I don’t want to give up on our planet, I want to fight for change but this book does not offer me an guidance on how。 If you don’t come to this book looking for such guidance then you will greatly enjoy it and I highly recommend。 。。。more

If a black hole wrote a book, this would be it。 To be fair, I only made it halfway through。 I was hoping it would be more about Greta and less about her mother’s various struggles。 Perhaps it gets better in the second half。

A book with some important messages, important topics of our world to which we should give more attention。 Besides environmental issues, that were already to be expected, it also touches on other important topics, like mental health and feminism。 Learning about the experience of a family that had to deal with these questions and how everything is connected was quite interesting。 However, at some point I didn’t feel motivated to finish this book。 At first, the writing in scattered topics and idea A book with some important messages, important topics of our world to which we should give more attention。 Besides environmental issues, that were already to be expected, it also touches on other important topics, like mental health and feminism。 Learning about the experience of a family that had to deal with these questions and how everything is connected was quite interesting。 However, at some point I didn’t feel motivated to finish this book。 At first, the writing in scattered topics and ideas captivated me, but soon it started to get repetitive and with an unclear train of thought。 Although I agreed with much - clearly climate change is an issue that should be given way more attention, something that also has been bothering me since I was a kid - I also disagreed with some things, since it’s a very different approach to these problems than my own, since I felt some parts were touched by some moral superiority。 I also knew most of the book was written by Greta’s mother, but I was hoping for a greater contribution from Greta herself, probably because of the way it was marketed (that contribution, aside from her speeches at the start and end of the book, is nonexistent)。 Even so, we still had a glimpse at Greta's journey, which was quite interesting since I respect her work a lot。 。。。more

Just great。 I mean, obviously it's not a book to escape into。 More like freezing- but-pristine spring water。 It's exciting in the same way that Greta's work is exciting: It cuts through the business-as-usual buzz。 It speaks to all of us who feel climate change is as real as a house on fire。It's also fascinating to read about Greta's story。 It is truly incredible that she went from being shut-down -- barely eating and never talking -- to being lit up -- leading a movement and speaking out。 Just great。 I mean, obviously it's not a book to escape into。 More like freezing- but-pristine spring water。 It's exciting in the same way that Greta's work is exciting: It cuts through the business-as-usual buzz。 It speaks to all of us who feel climate change is as real as a house on fire。It's also fascinating to read about Greta's story。 It is truly incredible that she went from being shut-down -- barely eating and never talking -- to being lit up -- leading a movement and speaking out。 。。。more

I admire this family but I found this book really hard to read。 Disjointed scenes and commentary and it just made me anxious。 The best part was reading about Greta's journey。 She was really struggling until she found her purpose in life and that made all the difference。 So inspiring。 I admire this family but I found this book really hard to read。 Disjointed scenes and commentary and it just made me anxious。 The best part was reading about Greta's journey。 She was really struggling until she found her purpose in life and that made all the difference。 So inspiring。 。。。more

This is and isn't what I expected it to be, and I am very mixed in a way in how to rate it, but it resonated with me on multiple levels, so I am going with that and giving it full marks。 I think it is significantly better to read it as a memoir of a neuro-atypical family navigating the challenges of survival as a thinking and feeling person in our modern age。 This is and isn't what I expected it to be, and I am very mixed in a way in how to rate it, but it resonated with me on multiple levels, so I am going with that and giving it full marks。 I think it is significantly better to read it as a memoir of a neuro-atypical family navigating the challenges of survival as a thinking and feeling person in our modern age。 。。。more

As others have commented, although Greta Thunberg’s name is listed first on the cover (at least of my edition), the book is written entirely from by her mom (or at least, in her voice and from her point of view)。 She draws interesting connections between late capitalism’s drive for constant growth and productivity and its negative impact on individuals’ mental heath and, of course, the climate and by extension, the lives of all other human beings & organisms present and future。 It was interestin As others have commented, although Greta Thunberg’s name is listed first on the cover (at least of my edition), the book is written entirely from by her mom (or at least, in her voice and from her point of view)。 She draws interesting connections between late capitalism’s drive for constant growth and productivity and its negative impact on individuals’ mental heath and, of course, the climate and by extension, the lives of all other human beings & organisms present and future。 It was interesting to learn a little bit about the Swedish special education system and how even an extremely well-resourced and involved family struggles within a system that isn’t designed to serve individuals。 。。。more

I loved the book but for reasons I did not anticipate。First of all, you need to know that it's written mostly by Malena Ernman - I'm sure the whole family contributed to the content, but it's written from her perspective and it's more "Scenes of a Family in Crisis" than a book about the planet。Having just glanced at the title, I expected more of a book on climate by Greta with the help of her family, so this came in as quite a surprise。The book balances two problems: mental health issues and the I loved the book but for reasons I did not anticipate。First of all, you need to know that it's written mostly by Malena Ernman - I'm sure the whole family contributed to the content, but it's written from her perspective and it's more "Scenes of a Family in Crisis" than a book about the planet。Having just glanced at the title, I expected more of a book on climate by Greta with the help of her family, so this came in as quite a surprise。The book balances two problems: mental health issues and the crisis of sustainability。 It covers really well the struggle of a family with two neurodivergent children - how they had to adjust their lives, how hard it was to get the diagnosis, how important the diagnosis really is and how girls on the spectrum are usually underdiagnosed。 This is mixed with information on the climat - what is the public stand on the topic, how it should be talked about, how the family approached it。。。It needs to be said that it is a pretty personal, self-therapeutical book。 You can see that Ms Ernman needed to write it mostly for herself - to put all these struggles on paper in order to lighten her load a little bit。 However the mix between autism and climate, ADHD and sustainability results in a book which is not heavy, not centered on one problem, but rather constantly moving from one to the other。 As both topic touch me on a personal level, I loved the honesty and the details provided。A few interesting facts from the book:- The number of people on medical leave with chronic fatigue in Sweden has doubled 6 times between 2010 and 2018。 Over 80% are women- "Fossil free" is a catch-all safe idea comprising anything from solar energy to deforestation, carbon trading and radioactive waste- Our part of the world has got nothing to do with rescuing the climate - we're fighting for the possiblity to keep on living the way we do- Nowadays it feels like everyone needs to be productive, but what we really need to do is choose between economy and ecology as we cannot have both 。。。more
