Loved the Authors Notes after each story- a nice bonus!

I enjoyed the short stories about the other characters or explaining more details about some things。

I acquired this primarily to read the last story, The Sins of Our Fathers。 I had already read all the others as they were published-so not addressing those here。 I am a huge fan of The Expanse, read most books twice, and still re-watch episodes of the television series。 I thought this last story just OK。 It is post-end-of-the-novels/story。 The setting is similar to some of the stories in the main novels - colonists on a new planet trapped there when the gates were lost。。。 along with some non-col I acquired this primarily to read the last story, The Sins of Our Fathers。 I had already read all the others as they were published-so not addressing those here。 I am a huge fan of The Expanse, read most books twice, and still re-watch episodes of the television series。 I thought this last story just OK。 It is post-end-of-the-novels/story。 The setting is similar to some of the stories in the main novels - colonists on a new planet trapped there when the gates were lost。。。 along with some non-colonist contractors one of which is our friend, Filipe Nagata。 It had some elements and dialog that I did not care for, and I thought the end a bit melodramatic。 If you are a fan, you may feel a bit more closure to the epic with this, so read it。。。 。。。more

This is a nice companion book to The Expanse, as it contains all of the short stories in one volume, and can be read in the appropriate places throughout a reading of the complete series。 It is a pretty solid collections, with stories ranging from pretty good to great to "really adds a lot to the overarching story"。 The biggest standouts for me were "The Churn" and "Strange Dogs"。 Not only were these great stories, but I thought that they also did a lot to enhance the experience of reading the m This is a nice companion book to The Expanse, as it contains all of the short stories in one volume, and can be read in the appropriate places throughout a reading of the complete series。 It is a pretty solid collections, with stories ranging from pretty good to great to "really adds a lot to the overarching story"。 The biggest standouts for me were "The Churn" and "Strange Dogs"。 Not only were these great stories, but I thought that they also did a lot to enhance the experience of reading the main series。 I will give an honorable mention to "The Sins of Our Fathers" as well, since the popular opinion seems to be that this story provides more of an ending to the series than what is given in Leviathan Falls。 I am not sure that I agree with that entirely, because I quite liked the way that The Expanse wrapped up in the final book。 Regardless though, for anyone committed to reading all nine books of the series, I think it is well worth the bit of additional time to supplement that reading experience with the short stories contained in this volume。 。。。more

I was sad to reach the end of The Expanse series two months ago, as it’s such a compelling and enjoyable space opera。 Memory's Legion collects novellas and short stories set in the same world in chronological order, starting before the book series begins and ending after it concludes。 They fill in some character backstories and provide snapshots of places that weren’t focused on in the novels。 Each has a brief author reflection afterwards, which I found interesting。 I am nearly always fonder of I was sad to reach the end of The Expanse series two months ago, as it’s such a compelling and enjoyable space opera。 Memory's Legion collects novellas and short stories set in the same world in chronological order, starting before the book series begins and ending after it concludes。 They fill in some character backstories and provide snapshots of places that weren’t focused on in the novels。 Each has a brief author reflection afterwards, which I found interesting。 I am nearly always fonder of long (or ideally very long) fiction than short, so did not find the collection as enjoyable as The Expanse novels themselves。 Nonetheless, some of the stories are really vivid and striking; all contained appealing details of characterisation and world building。 Perhaps most memorable was ‘The Churn’, which worked brilliantly as backstory while also bringing poverty-stricken future Baltimore to life。 As the author’s note mentions, it’s the only part of the series narrated omnisciently rather than via a specific narrator。 This works really well。 The most unsettling story was ‘The Vital Abyss’, which is essentially a complex prisoner’s dilemma played out among the protomolecule researchers, group of people I hadn’t thought to consider the fate of。 (view spoiler)[Especially chilling is the fact that they all took a neurological treatment that removed their ability to value human life。 (hide spoiler)] It’s an ingenious and claustrophobic tale。 My favourite story, however, was 'Auberon'。 This simply follows the bedding-in of Laconian occupation on the planet Auberon and resulting conflict of absolutist ideology with messy reality。 I found this story particularly psychologically and sociologically astute。 Compared with the rest of the collection it’s quieter and more ominous, not so much building to a climax as to acceptance of circumstances。 The author’s note describes it as a crime story, but that isn’t how I read it。 I think there’s a lot more going on that。 Conversely, the final story ‘The Sins of Our Fathers’ seemed a slightly underwhelming note to end on。 It was interesting to see the consequences of Leviathan Falls, but the social dynamics and world building felt less insightful than the usual high standards of The Expanse。 Nevertheless, Memory's Legion is a strong collection overall and I’d recommend it to anyone missing this fascinating world after finishing the series。 。。。more

Not all the stories were equal and that is probably up to the reader not the quality of the writers。 Each story is followed by an essay explaining what it was doing in the larger series。 For example, one is an origin story。 An interesting one was about a Laconian governor of a planet that was not too happy about being under the Laconians。

It's a feat that these stories feel absolutely essential to the series, and yet I didn't feel like I had missed anything when I read them just before finishing the main books。 It's a feat that these stories feel absolutely essential to the series, and yet I didn't feel like I had missed anything when I read them just before finishing the main books。 。。。more

Drive (2012)Drive takes place during and before Solomon Epstein's successful test of the eponymous drive, though one would think he that he would've taken more safety precautions than almost literally none。 The before part is mostly about his love life, which is fine in that it provides more of an existence to one of the most influential characters in the series, but it's just ok。OkThe Butcher of Anderson Station (2011)This nonlinear story takes place before, during, and after the titular event。 Drive (2012)Drive takes place during and before Solomon Epstein's successful test of the eponymous drive, though one would think he that he would've taken more safety precautions than almost literally none。 The before part is mostly about his love life, which is fine in that it provides more of an existence to one of the most influential characters in the series, but it's just ok。OkThe Butcher of Anderson Station (2011)This nonlinear story takes place before, during, and after the titular event。 It's about half a character study of Fred Johnson and half a demonstration of the lengths that governments will go to protect corporate interests, which are too often one and the same。 Unfortunately labor relations are even worse than they are now in various ways。 Lives are cheap and plentiful and interstellar commerce is lucrative。EnjoyableGods of Risk (2012)The viewpoint for this story is Bobbie's sixteen year old nephew。 He's highly proficient in chemistry and has fallen into making drugs for a local dealer。 He does so because it's something that's his own, outside of the oppressive expectations that his parents have。 He fantasizes about saving the girl the dealer is often with。 She's a perpetually strung-out junkie with a heart of, well, cardiac muscle, but he's infatuated with her all the same。EnjoyableThe Churn (2014)A young tough in Baltimore does what he has to do to survive and comes into the employment of a crime boss。 He does what he's told, but life doesn't quite go as planned for anyone involved。EnjoyableThe Vital Abyss (2015)Paolo Cortazar, a protomolecule researcher, recounts his life history。 The desperation to achieve one's dreams can lead to some very dark places, especially when circumstances only allow for a choice between which kind of being dead inside one prefers。EnjoyableStrange Dogs (2017)An unintentional immigrant family on Laconia, a newly settled planet, is taking it day by day to see what happens。 Their ten year old daughter only knows this new world。 She comes across some strange dogs who have quite the abilities that come in handy for fixing her mistakes and those of others。 It could be considered a horror story, but as the author's note, there are other perspectives as well。MehAuberon (2019)The planet Auberon has a new governor, filled with idealism, that meets the reality of corruption and fallibility。 This is also the third part of Erich's story, starting in the Churn, continuing in Nemesis Games, and concluding here。 There are a few references to other The Expanse works。OkThe Sins of Our Fathers (2022)The conclusion to Filip's story and an example of what life is like after the events of Leviathan Falls on one of the undeveloped planets。 A few hundred people try to maintain civilization, but monsters are everywhere。Ok 。。。more

The stories were all good。The problem, for me, lay in the fact that for the stories I hadn't managed to read while I was reading the series it was hard to make a connection because they filled us in on the lesser known characters, and I had often forgotten who they were, what they did and why。 Too many books in between。I'm sure if I had been able to read these stories as I was reading the series they would have been much more valuable to the reading experience。 The stories were all good。The problem, for me, lay in the fact that for the stories I hadn't managed to read while I was reading the series it was hard to make a connection because they filled us in on the lesser known characters, and I had often forgotten who they were, what they did and why。 Too many books in between。I'm sure if I had been able to read these stories as I was reading the series they would have been much more valuable to the reading experience。 。。。more

A fascinating coda to the series; it would have been easy for them to write in the same overall style that framed the novels, but here they make more interesting choices both stylistically and in terms of focus。The overall theme remains: humans getting in the way of themselves, and the tension of what we could do together or be together if we got past that。 But by letting us sit with side characters, changing the rules around perspective, and telling stories from across the overall timeline of t A fascinating coda to the series; it would have been easy for them to write in the same overall style that framed the novels, but here they make more interesting choices both stylistically and in terms of focus。The overall theme remains: humans getting in the way of themselves, and the tension of what we could do together or be together if we got past that。 But by letting us sit with side characters, changing the rules around perspective, and telling stories from across the overall timeline of the story, it both 'expands' and refracts the overall narrative of the world。The novels roll along with chapter breaks fairly regularly, so it was notable that the short stories are longer than multiple chapters from the novels。 This gave the stories and overall collection a slower pace, as we lingered longer with these perspectives than we're used to from these authors。This slower pace is not a criticism。 After reading through the series, it was particularly effective to linger and focus on characters and places。 And because you often already know an element of how these stories will turn out, (since most of them are reflecting situations from within the established timeline of the books) there is a sense of temporal pressure on the characters that the reader knows but the character doesn't。 。。。more

I found it difficult to read this series of short stories because each one falls between the novels of the original series, and so chronologically they jump around in this compilation a lot。 The writing is still gripping and cinematic but not as good as the novels。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Very dystopian。 Not a lot of physics to explain the engine, but there is a lot of biology to explain evolution on different planets with different chemical ecosystems。 I liked the connection of some of the short stories to each other, but find the time line approach to the universe was for the most part depressing。 Despair was the common denominator in the stories with people forced to stay or make bad decisions based on the horrors of the universe that had squelched all hope。

As an AI language model, I cannot have personal preferences or opinions。 However, I can give you some information about the book 'Memory's Legion: The Complete Expanse Story Collection'。 'Memory's Legion' is a collection of eight short stories set in the world of 'The Expanse', which is a popular science fiction series written by James S。A。 Corey。 The stories were previously published in various anthologies and magazines, and this collection brings them all together for the first time。 The book provides some extra insight into the world and characters of 'The Expanse', and expands on some of the events that are only hinted at in the main series。 Each story is self-contained, but they are all connected and add to the overall narrative。 For fans of the series, 'Memory's Legion' is a great way to dive deeper into this richly imagined universe。
