Summary

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959。 At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of a grand and mysterious mansion, a local delivery man makes a terrible discovery。 A police investigation is called and the small town of Tumbeela becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia。

Sixty years later, Jess is a journalist in search of a story。 Having lived and worked in London for almost twenty years, she now finds herself laid off from her full-time job and struggling to make ends meet。 A phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Stella, who raised Jess when her mother could not, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital。

Stella has always been a vibrant and strong presence: decisive, encouraging, young beyond her years。 When Jess visits her in the hospital she is alarmed to find her grandmother frail and confused; it’s even more alarming to hear from Stella’s housekeeper that Stella had been distracted in the weeks before her accident, and that she fell on the steps to the attic – the one place Jess was forbidden from playing when she was small。

At a loose end in Stella’s house, Jess does some digging of her own。 In Stella’s bedroom, she discovers a true crime book, chronicling the police investigation into a long-buried tragedy: the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959。 It is only when Jess skims through the book that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this once-infamous crime – a crime that has never been resolved satisfactorily。 And for a journalist without a story, a cold case might be the best distraction she can find 。 。 。

An epic novel that spans generations, Homecoming asks what we would do for those we love, and how we protect the lies we tell。 It explores the power of motherhood, the corrosive effects of tightly held secrets, and the healing nature of truth。 Above all, it is a beguiling and immensely satisfying novel from one of the finest writers working today。

nother great novel by Kate Morton。 I got swept away in this tale about a murdered family in Australia。 Kate is a master of setting up a scene。 You feel like you are in Halcyon itself。 The timeline jumps seamlessly between 1969 and 2018。 There is a large cast of characters who you will love。 Though I was confused at times when it came to the children。 Why would a mother take her own life and the life of her children? I have just started reading this book but have become hung up on the dates。 The story opens on New Year's Day 1959, which to me is 1st January, 1959 and the Turner family is alive。 Then continues in the next Chapter on Christmas Eve 1959 (approximately 12 months later) when Percy Summers discovers the bodies looking as though they're asleep。 This doesn't seem possible。 Am I missing something? I love Kate Morton's books, and this one was wonderful。 Having just visited Hahndorf, the capturing of the feeling of the area was magnificent。 It is like another world, up in the hills。 The plot was cleverly done, with each new section delivering yet another new angle。 What a masterful crime and cover up。 The motivations and emotions that lead to certain actions were sensitively and realistically captured。 It is easy to see how people can be misdirected in this book。 Lastly, the exploration of I love Kate Morton's books, and this one was wonderful。 Having just visited Hahndorf, the capturing of the feeling of the area was magnificent。 It is like another world, up in the hills。 The plot was cleverly done, with each new section delivering yet another new angle。 What a masterful crime and cover up。 The motivations and emotions that lead to certain actions were sensitively and realistically captured。 It is easy to see how people can be misdirected in this book。 Lastly, the exploration of home, family, loneliness and belonging was a pleasure to read, and to ponder beyond。 。。。more

Kate Morton’s newest book Homecoming is one of my most anticipated books of the year! There are trigger warnings however…be advised there is discussion of suicide, infanticide, filicide, miscarriage。 。。。more

I love this novel and would have loved it if it were 3 times as long。 I absolutely loved the fact it’s set in Australia; I know ‘those colours and smells, that quality of the light’ I loved the sense of homecoming and belonging, the exploration that home is a ‘feeling, a sense of being complete’ I loved the classic Kate Morton; the gothic estate and family secrets and mysteries; ‘Nora, Polly and Jess and their acidic family secrets’, the mother/ daughter relationships that feature in her novels。 I love this novel and would have loved it if it were 3 times as long。 I absolutely loved the fact it’s set in Australia; I know ‘those colours and smells, that quality of the light’ I loved the sense of homecoming and belonging, the exploration that home is a ‘feeling, a sense of being complete’ I loved the classic Kate Morton; the gothic estate and family secrets and mysteries; ‘Nora, Polly and Jess and their acidic family secrets’, the mother/ daughter relationships that feature in her novels。 Guilt and culpability are here too of course! It wouldn’t be a Kate Morton without it, and the sense of guardianship of the truth。。I loved the book love that is littered throughout these pages。 I know that feeling of carrying a new book ‘under her arm’ I know that kinship you feel when meeting ‘likeminded book lover’, that sense of shared history because you’ve loved the same novels。。We know ourselves by the stories other people tell and that was just so well explored between these covers。 Thank you SO much for the opportunity to read an early copy Allen and Unwin, I completely felt like I had won the lottery!!!!! 。。。more
