Summary

Perfect for fans of Margaret Rogerson and Tamora Pierce, this standalone YA debut is a stunning cottagecore fantasy romance about a girl with powerful and violent magic, which she must learn to control—or lose everything she loves。

Clara’s magic has always been wild。 But it’s never been dangerous。 Then a simple touch causes poisonous flowers to bloom in her father’s chest。

The only way to heal him is to cast an extremely difficult spell that requires perfect control。 And the only person willing to help is her former best friend, Xavier, who’s grown from a sweet, shy child into a mysterious and distant young man。

Xavier names a terrible price in return, knowing Clara will give anything to save her father。 As she struggles to reconcile the new Xavier with the boy she once loved, she discovers their bargain is only one of the heavy secrets he’s hiding。 And as she hunts for the truth, she instead finds the root of a terrible darkness that’s taken hold in the queendom—a darkness only Clara’s magic is powerful enough to stop。

This book was such a cozy little read where the story gave me Studio Ghibli vibes and reading the story with SG in the back made this book so fun to read!I loved how relaxing this book was。 There was no major action, it all flowed so well together and I absolutely adored the lgbtq+ representation with a bisexual lead character, two transgender characters and same sex couples which I applaud for。 This story had everything from cozy to representation ❤️。I recommend this book to fantasy, cottagecor This book was such a cozy little read where the story gave me Studio Ghibli vibes and reading the story with SG in the back made this book so fun to read!I loved how relaxing this book was。 There was no major action, it all flowed so well together and I absolutely adored the lgbtq+ representation with a bisexual lead character, two transgender characters and same sex couples which I applaud for。 This story had everything from cozy to representation ❤️。I recommend this book to fantasy, cottagecore and Studio Ghibli fans because this is your book right here ❤️。 。。。more

This book was really cozy and sweet。 I loved it, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea。 There was no big adventure, and it wasn't really intense。 It was just what I was hoping to get from it, a feel-good magical novel, that had a lot of references to flowers and their meanings。 If you go into this book expecting something else, you will be disappointed。 My main criticism is that the ending was rushed, but it didn't detract from my overall reading experience。 This book was a wonderful, cute r This book was really cozy and sweet。 I loved it, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea。 There was no big adventure, and it wasn't really intense。 It was just what I was hoping to get from it, a feel-good magical novel, that had a lot of references to flowers and their meanings。 If you go into this book expecting something else, you will be disappointed。 My main criticism is that the ending was rushed, but it didn't detract from my overall reading experience。 This book was a wonderful, cute read, that left me happy。 。。。more

Was their bargain and innocent exchange or something more sinister afoot? This story sounds sinister but was really quite innocent in the telling。 I would almost be tempted to say it's more of a middle grade novel。 It has strong fairytale elements, a wicked mother, and a sweet, innocent father。 Magic works a little bit differently here than in other books as it's only used to heal physical ailments。 It seems a more limited magic。 Clara's magic is like a negative self esteem problem that shows how we are in control of our own thoughts and how we must control them to be the people we are meant to be。 。。。more

The magical world is interesting, but the writing is inelegant。 It's not the cozy, happy story I was expecting。 There are a lot of obstacles in the story that are resolved easily, missing the necessary conflict to make successes feel earned。 Aside from the floral magic and the inclusive representation, I found this to be a rather brutal and frenetic story。 I feel a bit of whiplash upon finishing, frankly。 The magical world is interesting, but the writing is inelegant。 It's not the cozy, happy story I was expecting。 There are a lot of obstacles in the story that are resolved easily, missing the necessary conflict to make successes feel earned。 Aside from the floral magic and the inclusive representation, I found this to be a rather brutal and frenetic story。 I feel a bit of whiplash upon finishing, frankly。 。。。more

There were so many comforting and cozy parts to this story, which I loved。 I think Clara’s magic (and mental health) is something we can all relate to, and I loved the way Xavier helped talk her through things and feel her emotions。 The descriptions were lush and beautiful, but the imagery of flowers growing out of people’s bodies, and the magic taking possession of someone, was a little disturbing。 This story touched on “melancholy” and “euphoria”, which I interpreted as depression and drug use There were so many comforting and cozy parts to this story, which I loved。 I think Clara’s magic (and mental health) is something we can all relate to, and I loved the way Xavier helped talk her through things and feel her emotions。 The descriptions were lush and beautiful, but the imagery of flowers growing out of people’s bodies, and the magic taking possession of someone, was a little disturbing。 This story touched on “melancholy” and “euphoria”, which I interpreted as depression and drug use。 I think I would have enjoyed this more without the heavier topics, but I do think it was well written。 。。。more

I enjoyed this YA novel, mainly because of its focus on Cottagecore elements。 The main character's magic is directly linked to the creation of flowers - flowers that both help and harm people in equal measure。 There are picnics, initiation ceremonies, quiet moments creating potions, and just a general light vibe throughout this read。 The love story is cute - they barely kiss - but that is fun to read sometimes as well (first love)。 I found this engaging enough to continue reading the series, and I enjoyed this YA novel, mainly because of its focus on Cottagecore elements。 The main character's magic is directly linked to the creation of flowers - flowers that both help and harm people in equal measure。 There are picnics, initiation ceremonies, quiet moments creating potions, and just a general light vibe throughout this read。 The love story is cute - they barely kiss - but that is fun to read sometimes as well (first love)。 I found this engaging enough to continue reading the series, and I look forward to the next installment。 。。。more

⭐️⭐️⭐️。5I absolutely loved the coziness of this book。 The magic system is so interesting and very unique with the use of flowers and potions。 The character dynamics and relationships were great and I was rooting for our main character right from the start。 I loved the romance and family elements too as well as the depression representation within this story。 I think this is a great YA standalone fantasy novel and I will definitely be recommending it! This is one of the best portrayals I've seen of depression and anxiety in a YA novel to date。 Beyond that, the world feels magical and lush in a way that creates important distance between the content and the reader; it gives space for readers to think about how the tough feelings in the book might relate to them while making the experience feel safe。 I hope this finds its way onto YA library shelves everywhere。 This is one of the best portrayals I've seen of depression and anxiety in a YA novel to date。 Beyond that, the world feels magical and lush in a way that creates important distance between the content and the reader; it gives space for readers to think about how the tough feelings in the book might relate to them while making the experience feel safe。 I hope this finds its way onto YA library shelves everywhere。 。。。more
