Summary

What a (audio)book man。。。 There are many authors out there talking about how we can get a better grip on our mindset thanks to sociology, psychology, philosophy, statistics, history, religion, but what Goggins brings to the table is pretty much unique: the way to get a better grip on our mind using the body as a reminder of so。It goes hard as hell ever since the first chapter and the book lays over the foundation that talent is not required when we're talking about breaking our own physical and What a (audio)book man。。。 There are many authors out there talking about how we can get a better grip on our mindset thanks to sociology, psychology, philosophy, statistics, history, religion, but what Goggins brings to the table is pretty much unique: the way to get a better grip on our mind using the body as a reminder of so。It goes hard as hell ever since the first chapter and the book lays over the foundation that talent is not required when we're talking about breaking our own physical and mental barriers, either they are self or imposed by others as we grew up。I can't recommend you enough this book if you want to listen to a really inspiring life about a man that in the process to achieve greatness competed against his mind and won the battle, while at the same time he defeated his own body limits; a great read/listen for people looking for the extra and missing mile when talking about mind and body transformation。 。。。more

Goggins writes raw。 This book strikes to the core and makes you ask the important questions。

I do not know if I should be inspired or incredibly scared by this book。 What he does seems inhuman, but I guess that is the point。 We all have more potential than we could possibly imagine。 Don’t expect me to push my boundaries too much。 Maybe just a little。

Not particularly great prose but its lessons are second to none and makes it a stand out book for personal motivation

Spectacular read。 He writes about the strength of the mind and dominating your own weaker thoughts like its an art and I was captivated all the way through。Not only that - it motivated me to snap out of my 'settlement' mentality。 Spectacular read。 He writes about the strength of the mind and dominating your own weaker thoughts like its an art and I was captivated all the way through。Not only that - it motivated me to snap out of my 'settlement' mentality。 。。。more

A - 4。75/5This book is one that I will keep on coming back to for the the foreseeable future to reread。 You follow the life of David Goggins and see all the hardships he had to overcome and how he became the man he is today。 Personally listened to the audiobook as it had extra discussions and was kind of like a podcast/interview inbetween his stories。My takeaway from this book。YOU need to learn how to push yourself in life。 Dont rely on other people or external factors。 If you are faced with a c A - 4。75/5This book is one that I will keep on coming back to for the the foreseeable future to reread。 You follow the life of David Goggins and see all the hardships he had to overcome and how he became the man he is today。 Personally listened to the audiobook as it had extra discussions and was kind of like a podcast/interview inbetween his stories。My takeaway from this book。YOU need to learn how to push yourself in life。 Dont rely on other people or external factors。 If you are faced with a challenge don't see it as a problem but rather see it as an opportunity to grow yourself and test what you are truly capable of。 Dont get too comfortable in life and feel sorry for yourself if things dont go your way。 YOU are capable of a lot, you just have to learn to keep pushing。 Like he said in the book do not attempt what he does (hes a mad man), but gradually keep on trying to do more when your mind gives up and you will be surprised with how much you are actually capable of。 Your mentally is the only thing you can control in your life, strengthen it as much as you can。 。。。more

This is an extract of a conversation I had with someone regarding this book。• Me: I heard the audio book is really good too, gonna have to start listening that while running• Havtorn: I got around halfway through the audiobook, can't say I'm a huge fan of what I heard up until that point。I think I would have loved it when I was in my early 20s, but that kid was on a straight path to running himself into a wall a few years later, so。。。But that's my bias, ofc。 What self-help and motivational speak This is an extract of a conversation I had with someone regarding this book。• Me: I heard the audio book is really good too, gonna have to start listening that while running• Havtorn: I got around halfway through the audiobook, can't say I'm a huge fan of what I heard up until that point。I think I would have loved it when I was in my early 20s, but that kid was on a straight path to running himself into a wall a few years later, so。。。But that's my bias, ofc。 What self-help and motivational speakers etc resonate with you depends so much on where you're at。I saw someone mention Atomic Habits as well。 That one I liked a lot, largely for how practical and specific it was。• Me : I listened to about 30mins and I thought it was pretty good, didn't get into the meat of it yet and only still just felt bad for him and understood how much better of a life I'm living currently than him and still I don't take full use of all the opportunities ahead of me and waste my time on unproductive stuff。I guess the stuff he known for kinda do resonate with me cuz for a while I've wanted to be consistent and not be sidetracked but always get weak willed and break my promises to myself to workout, study or even ask that cute girl out, giving self pleasing excuses to washed down my guilt。Considering the dude behind the words, I'm sure there's a quite a bit I could learn, so kinda driven to get the most out of that book。• Havtorn : There's a lot to be said for finding joy in going against friction。 But, well。 Speaking from personal experience going to far in that direction can turn out badly, because at the end of the day we're limited creatures no matter what kind of "grindset" we get into。 Burnout is no joke。I guess I'm saying Aristotle had it right with the whole "golden mean" thing。 🙂And that my own challenges really lie elsewhere。• Me : Yeah def no point in going really hard one day and doing the nothing the next。 I get life is like a marathon。 And that's the exact problem I have currently I go really hard one day and got nothing to show the next cuz I'm heavily reliant on motivation (which is not a very reliable friend to have) and not an actual primal sense of drive to get the work done。 If my morning is shit that automatically makes my whole day shit, which sucksFinished the book and really liked it felt I learnt a lot and even though I didn't end up doing most of the challenges I still feel like this book changed me in a way, I am much more disciplined than I ever was and no longer rely on motivation to get me going but instead even on the days I just don't wanna and the days something went wrong and shit hit the fan I still grind on。 Also this book got me back into running which I'm grateful for I would basically run so I could listen to this book and his story motivativated me to go the extra mile and get an amazing run each session and by the end of the book my running habit was fully formed and it felt wrong not to go on a run。But even though I really liked this book the second book didn't stick we me and I dropped it after a couple hours, but this one is still one of the best "self help" books out there and I'm really glad I took the time to listen to it。Also ps。 The audiobook which I listened to is superior to the print version in everyway not only due to the fantastic narration but due to a kinda podcast format in between chapters where Goggins and the narrater (his Ghostwriter) discuss what was said and give key information which are sometimes more important than the stuff penned down by ink。 。。。more

I devoured this book over a couple days and was sucked into Goggins' story。 He was born into an abusive family life that no human being should have to endure。 The knocks keep coming as he also faces various tragedies, set backs, racism, and poverty。 Yet, Goggins goes on to accomplish amazing feats and he explains here how he does it。There are good nuggets and takeaways for the reader。 However, it's also worth noting that Goggins' is motivated by hate: hate for his father (is it a coincidence that his father called him an f-word as a child and then Goggins goes on to pursue a career in the most stereotypically masculine of fields: the military?), hate for his military instructors, and really, self-hate。 It was also sometimes frustrating to read how Goggins repeatedly takes on extremely difficult challenges with little to no preparation and then suffers extreme physical consequences。 I thought as I read, "This dude is a hardcore masochist" and then Goggins goes on to describe himself as such。 The payoff of seeing him finally accomplish these challenges was satisfying to read when it finally came。 The influence of Goggins' time in the military is throughly embedded in this book and story。 His choice of words alone (lots of f-bombs) is evidence of this。 He also uses sexist language throughout the book that some readers may not appreciate ("pussy", "vagina" = weak)。 Ugh。 The target audience seems to be broken men caught in a web of toxic masculinity。 Another thing I noticed as I read is that Goggins references his wife's pregnancy at a difficult time in his life (just when he is about to go through SEALS BUD/S training for the third and final time)。。。and then makes no further references to the birth of his child or any child for the rest of the book。 It struck me as odd。。。and less warm。 Even if Goggins wants to keep his child's identity private, the fact that he makes absolutely ZERO reference toward his child gives me the sense that he isn't actively involved in his kid's life。 Is Goggins' story interesting? Yes。 Does this book contain ideas and inspiration for achieving difficult goals? Yes。 Should Goggins be commended for overcoming incredible obstacles and achieving amazing things? Yes, absolutely。 Should you use the same techniques Goggins did to achieve your goals? Maybe not。 Maybe get some therapy and learn self-compassion before attempting at home。 Should Goggins be put on any kind of self-help/motivational guru pedestal? No。 In fact, no one should。 。。。more

It was so hard for me to get through this book。 I don’t understand the hype for this book。 He is very aggressive in the way he speaks and says things like “don’t be a pussy”。 Seems like he is just bragging about himself for all his accomplishments and thinks he is better than everyone else because of it。 I didn’t even learn much from this book on how to improve my own mindset, which is what I expected and wanted。
