Summary

A love letter to Syria and its people, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow is a speculative novel set amid the Syrian Revolution, burning with the fires of hope, love, and possibility。 Perfect for fans of The Book Thief and Salt to the Sea。

Salama Kassab was a pharmacy student when the cries for freedom broke out in Syria。 She still had her parents and her big brother; she still had her home。 She had a normal teenager’s life。

Now Salama volunteers at a hospital in Homs, helping the wounded who flood through the doors daily。 Secretly, though, she is desperate to find a way out of her beloved country before her sister-in-law, Layla, gives birth。 So desperate, that she has manifested a physical embodiment of her fear in the form of her imagined companion, Khawf, who haunts her every move in an effort to keep her safe。

But even with Khawf pressing her to leave, Salama is torn between her loyalty to her country and her conviction to survive。 Salama must contend with bullets and bombs, military assaults, and her shifting sense of morality before she might finally breathe free。 And when she crosses paths with the boy she was supposed to meet one fateful day, she starts to doubt her resolve in leaving home at all。

Soon, Salama must learn to see the events around her for what they truly are—not a war, but a revolution—and decide how she, too, will cry for Syria’s freedom。

I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much reading a book, knowing that this is some people’s reality is truly heartbreaking。Everyone needs to read this, its so true what the author says in their author’s note。 The news report numbers of deaths so much that we become desensitised to the fact that each number was an actual person that’s had hopes and dreams of a better life。If you’re a fan of Khaled Hosseini books you should definitely read this。 I do wonder why this is marketed as a YA book because i I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much reading a book, knowing that this is some people’s reality is truly heartbreaking。Everyone needs to read this, its so true what the author says in their author’s note。 The news report numbers of deaths so much that we become desensitised to the fact that each number was an actual person that’s had hopes and dreams of a better life。If you’re a fan of Khaled Hosseini books you should definitely read this。 I do wonder why this is marketed as a YA book because it’s very triggering and quite graphic with descriptions of injuries and deaths and the main character is 19。 I personally would recommend it for new adult/adult readers 。。。more

I thought the writing was sound, if not a bit repetitive。 But I’m going to say that that was the point - every day brought new horrors and more victims at this particular time and place。 The first half was slow for me, as I wanted to move past the incessant wounded and to Salama’s “getting out。” Second half picked up and threw me for a few loops。 Not sure I would recommend to everyone, but (as far as the little I know) I think it is a good depiction of Syria starting in 2011。

I read this book in preparation for a book event where the author was present, after having previously already bought the book。 And oh am I glad that made me push this book to the front of my TBR because it is an absolute gem of a book。I know, I know, I talk about crying because of book every other review。 And I won't deny I cry easily and love crying for book。 But this book? I hardly know where to start with this most beautiful of books。 I am reeling from all that it contains。 I am ashamed of how little attention I have paid to the conflict in Syria, and so many other parts of the world。 Thank you, Zoulfa Katouh, for writing this。 For bringing the trauma and tragedy to life in such a shocking and yet beautiful way。 There is so much swirling around in my mind having just finished this。 The descriptions of the dreadful situations facing those like Salama and Dr Ziad, I hardly know where to start with this most beautiful of books。 I am reeling from all that it contains。 I am ashamed of how little attention I have paid to the conflict in Syria, and so many other parts of the world。 Thank you, Zoulfa Katouh, for writing this。 For bringing the trauma and tragedy to life in such a shocking and yet beautiful way。 There is so much swirling around in my mind having just finished this。 The descriptions of the dreadful situations facing those like Salama and Dr Ziad, determined to do what they can in the hospital; powerful images, yet doubtless just scratching the surface of the reality。 The brutality of life in a war zone and the effects it has on individuals, seen in Salama’s hallucinations and Yusuf’s silence。 The beauty of the love between Salama and Kenan and their purity, despite never knowing whether each moment will be their last。 I could say more but I don’t want to spoil anything for those yet to read this book。 And you should read it。 It is shocking and challenging and terrifying and yet so so beautiful and moving。 At times I wanted it to end。 At times I hardly dared to turn the page。 And yet I also wanted to stay with the characters and get to know them even better。 Read it。 。。。more

This beautiful, heart-breaking YA novel follows eighteen-year-old Salama, who must decide whether to flee the revolution in Syria with her pregnant sister-in-law, Layla。 A pharmacy student before the conflict, Salama now volunteers at the hospital in Homs, helping the wounded, due to the lack of medical staff。 Traumatised by her experiences, she hallucinates Khawf, a figure who plays on her worst fears, and meets Kenan, who encourages her to see the world in a different light。 As her environment This beautiful, heart-breaking YA novel follows eighteen-year-old Salama, who must decide whether to flee the revolution in Syria with her pregnant sister-in-law, Layla。 A pharmacy student before the conflict, Salama now volunteers at the hospital in Homs, helping the wounded, due to the lack of medical staff。 Traumatised by her experiences, she hallucinates Khawf, a figure who plays on her worst fears, and meets Kenan, who encourages her to see the world in a different light。 As her environment becomes ever more dangerous, Salama must grapple with what the revolution really means to her and how far she is willing to go to protect the people she loves。 As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow is ultimately a story about finding and holding onto hope, love and moments of peace in horrific circumstances。 Salama is a wonderful protagonist - practical, resilient, conflicted and kind - and the story is powerfully and earnestly told。 The prose is often flowery which may not have worked for me in a different novel but felt fitting here in contrast with the brutality of the characters' lives。The writing did, however, feel clunky or repetitive at times, and I felt some of the dialogue and characterisation could have been deeper and more nuanced。 (view spoiler)[I guessed the twist a good way before it happened which made that part of the book fall a little flat for me。 This added to my sense of the pacing being slightly off in the second half。 (As a side note, this is the second book with fruit in its title that I've read where I correctly predicted that the main character is hallucinating their dead best friend, after Kereen Getten's lovely When Life Gives You Mangoes。 If I find a third one, I think I can officially declare a new genre。) (hide spoiler)]Overall, though, this is a strong, important debut from a talented writer。 I hope it reaches a large audience and I look forward to seeing what Katouh writes next。 。。。more

If I'm going to be honest, there's really only one reason I picked this book up: BTS。 i don't usually enjoy books like this。 I'm more of a fantasy, sci-fi, occasionally a mystery book type of girl。 But when I heard the author was an ARMY, I obviously had to read it。 And I'm glad I did。 I'm glad BTS led me to this book。 It really was serendipity。I'm ashamed to admit that I knew almost nothing about the Syrian revolution before this。 Of course I knew it was happening, but I never learned anything If I'm going to be honest, there's really only one reason I picked this book up: BTS。 i don't usually enjoy books like this。 I'm more of a fantasy, sci-fi, occasionally a mystery book type of girl。 But when I heard the author was an ARMY, I obviously had to read it。 And I'm glad I did。 I'm glad BTS led me to this book。 It really was serendipity。I'm ashamed to admit that I knew almost nothing about the Syrian revolution before this。 Of course I knew it was happening, but I never learned anything about it。 I'm forever grateful that this book opened my eyes, even if it was to a dark reality。 And I hope that everyone gets the chance to read it。 Maybe even RM one day。Ok, enough of that。 Let's get into the actual review。I was skeptical when I first started it。 I had heard that it was a heart wrenching, tear jerking book that left people in shattered pieces on the floor。 And while some parts were sad, nothing really broke my heart until chapter 29。 God, that was so sad。 And I think it's because it was focused on Salama herself, rather than the world around her。 So much of this book shows the problems that happen in Syria everyday。 How people are affected physically。 But they're affected emotionally and mentally too。 And that was hardest for me to read。 From the blurb, readers know Salama struggles with PTSD and hallucinations。 But the extent of that isn't completely shown until chapter 29。 And I think it was really well written。 It definitely had me fooled。 So yes, this entire paragraph was for me to say that a plot twist was very well written and I didn't see it coming。 Though I should have。 READ 👏 THIS 👏 BOOK 👏 AND 👏 FIND 👏 OUT 👏 WHAT 👏 I'M 👏 TALKING 👏 ABOUT!In regards to that, I liked the writing style。 It wasn't difficult to read and it well portrayed the story without being overly embellished (if that makes sense)。 I think the flashbacks really enhanced the plot and made the difference between Salama's past and present very clear。 It helped make the plot make sense (I'm not sure that makes sense)。I loved the characters。 Salama is a fierce, determined young woman with a well written backstory。 She's a character everybody is rooting for。 Kenan, my soft boi 🥺。 Just like the author says in the Author's Note, Kenan refuses to accept today's standards of toxic masculinity。 His love for his family makes me love him even more。LEMONBLOSSOM FOR LIFE!All the other characters were very well written too。 Dr。 Ziad and Nour。 Shout out to all the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff for saving lives daily。 I think anybody would be proud to have fictional colleagues like these two。 Lama and Yusuf。 God, these two about broke me。 But it shows how PTSD can affect people differently。Layla。 I love you。 You seem like such a wonderful person。 And the bestest best friend that ever was。Am。 I may not like you, but at least you're helping。 Kind of。And Khawf。 You're kind of the anti hero in this story。 Not good but not bad。 But in the end I didn't hate you。 And you were a great character。 You added a level of mystery and suspense to the story, in a way。And to all the other characters that are a product of Ms。 Katouh's mind。 No matter how insignificant a character may seem, they still affect the story。The plot is well paced。 Each time you think things are about to calm down, something new happens that raises your anxiety levels。 10/10 would recommend。 There aren't any pointless scenes are times when you want to strangle the main character。 Well, I take that back。 There was one part where I wanted to shake Salama and say, "DON'T BE AN IDIOT!" But that's because I wasn't in her shoes。 I didn't know how she was feeling。 Anyway, as far as I could tell there were no plot holes。 And it isn't boring。 Now into my nonsensical rambling about the book。 Warning: these are not entirely coherent thoughts。Ms。 Katouh are you by any chance Jimin biased? Cause I peep that 10:13 a。m。 on page 117。Readers, read the acknowledgements。 And the author's note。 They are just as much a part of the book as any other page。 And you might find a mention of someone you know。 Like BTS。 I always find that fun。 I've never watched Studio Ghibli。 Now I want to。I will forever be recommending this book to anyone who asks。 Now in all seriousness, go read it。 You've read this far into my review。 Might as well pick the book up。 Give it a go。 You got this。 And thank you, Ms。 Katouh for an amazing book。 보라해요 and 감사합니다。 If I ever meet BTS, Lemon Trees will be the first book I recommend。 。。。more

I was mesmerized by the style of writing from the very first page。 Even though the seriousness we are confronted with was a little bit out of comfort for me the style of writing made it very easy to follow the story as well as the plot which was balanced really good between sad and sweet。 The characters had depth and were really well built。 Nothing about them felt to over the top or dramatic which made them feel like real people。 This should definitely be read by everyone because the book repres I was mesmerized by the style of writing from the very first page。 Even though the seriousness we are confronted with was a little bit out of comfort for me the style of writing made it very easy to follow the story as well as the plot which was balanced really good between sad and sweet。 The characters had depth and were really well built。 Nothing about them felt to over the top or dramatic which made them feel like real people。 This should definitely be read by everyone because the book represent an incredibly important topic that isn't talked about a lot。 Favorite of the year!! 。。。more

Although this is a work of fiction, I learned so much about the Syrian Revolution and the injustices that have/are taking place in their country。 This book absolutely gutted me, but I loved it thoroughly。 It was a little slow in the beginning but it picked up and the second half flew by。 Excellent read for sure。

every lemon will bring forth a child, and the lemons will never die out not even exaggerating when i say that this book made me cry at-least 7 different times。 the running symbolism of nature being representative of syria’s soul was probably what made me most emotional。 you can never subject a nation to diminishment because it lives through the souls of the people。 and as long as their hearts still beat the tune of their homeland, it will never die。 salama and kenan are such precious souls as we every lemon will bring forth a child, and the lemons will never die out not even exaggerating when i say that this book made me cry at-least 7 different times。 the running symbolism of nature being representative of syria’s soul was probably what made me most emotional。 you can never subject a nation to diminishment because it lives through the souls of the people。 and as long as their hearts still beat the tune of their homeland, it will never die。 salama and kenan are such precious souls as well。 they crafted such a delicate and soft form of love in the midst of all the chaos。 inshallah they and anyone who sees themselves in these characters can bask in the soil of their land once again。 i only docked a point because of the writing in certain moments, it did feel YA which is a genre i feel i grew out of。 but that didn’t diminish the feelings this evoked within me。 read this, it’s a story of anguish and heartbreak and hope and revolution。 。。。more
