Summary

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959: At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek on the grounds of the grand and mysterious mansion, a local delivery man makes a terrible discovery。 A police investigation is called and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia。

Sixty years later, Jess is a journalist in search of a story。 Having lived and worked in London for almost twenty years, she now finds herself laid off from her full-time job and struggling to make ends meet。 A phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Nora, who raised Jess when her mother could not, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital。

Nora has always been a vibrant and strong presence: decisive, encouraging, young despite her years。 When Jess visits her in the hospital, she is alarmed to find her grandmother frail and confused。 It’s even more alarming to hear from Nora's housekeeper that Nora had been distracted in the weeks before her accident and had fallen on the steps to the attic—the one place Jess was forbidden from playing in when she was small。

At loose ends in Nora's house, Jess does some digging of her own。 In Nora's bedroom, she discovers a true crime book, chronicling the police investigation into a long-buried tragedy: the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959。 It is only when Jess skims through the book that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this once-infamous crime—a crime that has never been resolved satisfactorily。 And for a journalist without a story, a cold case might be the best distraction she can find…

An epic novel that spans generations, Homecoming asks what we would do for those we love, and how we protect the lies we tell。 It explores the power of motherhood, the corrosive effects of tightly held secrets, and the healing nature of truth。 Above all, it is a beguiling and immensely satisfying novel from one of the finest writers working today。

I love this novel and would have loved it if it were 3 times as long。 I absolutely loved the fact it’s set in Australia; I know ‘those colours and smells, that quality of the light’ I loved the sense of homecoming and belonging, the exploration that home is a ‘feeling, a sense of being complete’ I loved the classic Kate Morton; the gothic estate and family secrets and mysteries; ‘Nora, Polly and Jess and their acidic family secrets’, the mother/ daughter relationships that feature in her novels。 I love this novel and would have loved it if it were 3 times as long。 I absolutely loved the fact it’s set in Australia; I know ‘those colours and smells, that quality of the light’ I loved the sense of homecoming and belonging, the exploration that home is a ‘feeling, a sense of being complete’ I loved the classic Kate Morton; the gothic estate and family secrets and mysteries; ‘Nora, Polly and Jess and their acidic family secrets’, the mother/ daughter relationships that feature in her novels。 Guilt and culpability are here too of course! Jess receives a parcel at just the right time and discovers hidden pages and a hidden letter just when their information is most needed。 I have difficulty believing that removing a few pages from a journal would eliminate all references to a life-altering relationship。 Yet the discovery of a burial 20 years later doesn’t raise questions in the person who deliberately did not bury what is discovered? The book certainly emphasizes the impact of secrets and lies。 At the end the reader is influenced to reflect on how lives and relationships would have been very different if secrets had not been kept and lies not told。 “The chief storyteller” in the family is responsible for so much: destroying relationships and damaging people。 Jess’s conclusion that “it was impossible to feel angry” with this person responsible for “acidic family secrets” is simplistic。Characters are well-developed。 What is interesting is that the reader’s opinion of several characters changes in the course of novel。 Characters often prove to be better or worse than first impressions suggest。 The one character whom I did not like is Jess。 For someone who is almost 40, she seems immature, willing to forgive one person but reluctant to forgive another。 Her behaviour while Nora is in the hospital (showing up late for visits) doesn’t jive with her supposed love for her grandmother。As an avid reader, I loved the references to how a love of reading impacts the lives of several characters。 Relationships are formed and lives are changed because of a love of books and reading。 I can certainly identify with "the lightness of spirit and free-floating sense of possibility” felt in new books awaiting my attention。 There is a good story here, but it could use some judicious revising and editing。 Note: I received a digital galley from the publisher via NetGalley。Please check out my reader's blog (https://schatjesshelves。blogspot。com/) and follow me on Twitter (@DCYakabuski)。 。。。more

Homecoming is a slow-burn generational mystery set in Australia。 A family tragedy on Christmas Eve of 1959 in Adelaide, Australia, remains mostly unsolved sixty years later。 Jessica, a struggling journalist, returns to Australia after receiving a call that her grandmother Nora suffered a fall。 Jess is surprised to find Norma, a typically energetic and bright woman, confused and small, in her hospital bed。 While staying at her grandmother’s home, Jess discovers a true-crime book linking the decad Homecoming is a slow-burn generational mystery set in Australia。 A family tragedy on Christmas Eve of 1959 in Adelaide, Australia, remains mostly unsolved sixty years later。 Jessica, a struggling journalist, returns to Australia after receiving a call that her grandmother Nora suffered a fall。 Jess is surprised to find Norma, a typically energetic and bright woman, confused and small, in her hospital bed。 While staying at her grandmother’s home, Jess discovers a true-crime book linking the decades-old Christmas Eve tragedy to her family。 Jess begins to investigate what happened all those years ago。 This historical mystery has multiple POVs, two timelines and contains a book within a book。 It looks at mother-daughter relationships, identity, and belonging。 It also considers mental health during a period when these conversations were not openly discussed。 There are several threads to this mystery。 Some are glaringly obvious from the beginning, but others might be a surprise。 I did not see one of the final reveals at all, but the breadcrumbs were there。 I love reading books set in Australia, and Morton brought the 1960s setting to life。 The descriptions of the landscape are vivid, and the heat is palpable。 The only problem I had with this book was the length。 Usually, I love chunky books; they give the reader lots of time to get invested in the story and characters。 But with this one, at times, it felt like a slog。 If you enjoy dual timelines with a bit of mystery, you may also enjoy Homecoming。 Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for providing an arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 https://booksandwheels。com 。。。more

This was Kate Morton at her absolute best。 I was gripped from the first page。 The descriptions were vivid and the story believable。 Set in Australia, but with snippets of London, I was able to visualise every detail。 The depth of her characters was astonishing and I felt I got to know each of them。 Four strong women; Jess, Polly, Nora and Isabel。 The transition from past to present day was effortless。 Highly recommended。

Just when you think you hold the key in your hand, it reveals another closed door! No! So once more you return to Morton land as she keeps digging deeper and deeper into the heart of her characters; as the intricate layers, with twists one could not guess, just keep coming。 ‘For all that 'home' was considered a word of warmth and comfort, policemen knew better。 Home is where the heart is, and the heart could be a dark and damaged place。’Moving over some 50 years and three generations, roaming from London to Sydney yet at its heart is the call of the Adelaide hills - this is a story that will consume you。 Morton is the Master! Page after page where you lose yourself in the character, in the mystery, in the haunting house and its surroundings and in, most importantly, the wonder of her words。 I simply don’t know how she does it - the time and place, the tears and turns - it all feels so real。 In many respects - especially book lovers out there - it is as if Kate were writing the book to you …。 for you。 I highlighted so many quotes that truly spoke to my heart - this could not be fiction。 This is Kate and I thank her for writing how I feel on paper - her storytelling is second to none as she eloquently transports her readers to another place and time。 ‘Reading shapes a person。 The landscape of books is more real, in some ways, than the one outside the window。 It isn't experienced at a remove; it is internal, vital。’I can say, without a doubt, this is one of the best books I have ever read。 Kate is always in my top three authors as her writing is so immersive and I am lost in her words。 Homecoming is stunningly beautiful and heartachingly told about the secrets we keep, the hurt we bring to those we love and the absolute joy of finally reaching ‘home’。 Thank you Kate for bringing me home。 ‘Home, she'd realised, wasn't a place or a time or a person, though it could be any and all of those things: home was a feeling, a sense of being complete。’ 。。。more

I used to be an avid Kate Morton fan。 I remember balmy summer days sat reading her long novels on a rug in the garden。 I would devour them pretty quickly so I knew I enjoyed them。Unfortunately I didn't feel the same way about Homecoming。 Maybe my own tastes have changed in the last few years? I feel I've read some many dual timeline novels, with large houses and mysterious characters in them that I feel as though I've read them all。 I felt the story was quite flat and didn't hold my attention。 U I used to be an avid Kate Morton fan。 I remember balmy summer days sat reading her long novels on a rug in the garden。 I would devour them pretty quickly so I knew I enjoyed them。Unfortunately I didn't feel the same way about Homecoming。 Maybe my own tastes have changed in the last few years? In all honesty, I don't know what was going through my mind when I decided to request this book, because the premise didn't sound particularly intriguing once I actually went to read it。 And I was right because, from the very start of the book, I was incredibly disinterested in it。 Keep in mind that this book is also over 550 pages which。。。was way longer than it needed to be。 It was a slog and a half to get through this。 I don't think that it is a fault of the book though, it just wasn't for me In all honesty, I don't know what was going through my mind when I decided to request this book, because the premise didn't sound particularly intriguing once I actually went to read it。 And I was right because, from the very start of the book, I was incredibly disinterested in it。 Keep in mind that this book is also over 550 pages which。。。was way longer than it needed to be。 It was a slog and a half to get through this。 I don't think that it is a fault of the book though, it just wasn't for me (at all)。 Thank you, NetGalley and Simon & Schuster, for giving me the opportunity to review this in advance。 。。。more
