Summary

In this tense, spellbinding thriller set over the course of a single day, a woman prepares for a party that goes dreadfully wrong—for fans of Ashley Audrain and Lisa Jewell。

Nadine Walsh’s summer garden party is in full swing。 The neighbors all have cocktails, the catered food is exquisite—everything’s going according to plan。

But Nadine—devoted wife, loving mother, and doting daughter—finds herself standing over a dead body in her basement while her guests clink glasses upstairs。 What happened? How did it come to this?

Rewind to that morning, when Nadine is in her kitchen, making last-minute preparations before she welcomes more than a hundred guests to her home to celebrate her mother’s birthday。 But her husband is of little help to her, her two grown children are consumed with their own concerns, and her mother—only her mother knows that today isn’t just a birthday party。 It marks another anniversary as well。

Still, Nadine will focus just on tonight。 Everyone deserves a celebration after the year they’ve had。 A chance for fun。 A chance to forget。 But it’s hard to forget when Nadine’s head is swirling with secrets, haunting memories, and concerns about what might happen when her guests unite。

Nadine Walsh is hosting a sixtieth birthday party for her mother, the bestselling author Marilyn Millay。 The hundred guest party is a success, with drinks flowing, beautiful decor, and delicious food。 However, at the end of the party, Nadine is left standing over a body in her basement。 This story follows the entire day leading up to the party, which Nadine spends rehashing events from her mother’s birthday party thirty years earlier when her aunt Colleen was found dead, up until the party with Nadine Walsh is hosting a sixtieth birthday party for her mother, the bestselling author Marilyn Millay。 The hundred guest party is a success, with drinks flowing, beautiful decor, and delicious food。 However, at the end of the party, Nadine is left standing over a body in her basement。 This story follows the entire day leading up to the party, which Nadine spends rehashing events from her mother’s birthday party thirty years earlier when her aunt Colleen was found dead, up until the party with another dead body。 This story was thrilling and fast paced。 There were loads of hints of dark secrets to come in the first chapters。 Everyone had secrets in their small community, and everyone was connected in some way。 The story opens with Nadine standing over a dying man at the end of the party, but we don’t know who he is yet。 There were so many possibilities as to who he could be that I was still guessing until the end。 My only critique is that I want to know what happens next! I thought the story would still have a couple of more chapters when it ended。 I would love to hear what happened after that final chapter。 A Death at the Party is a great new thriller!Thank you Simon and Schuster Canada and Tandem Collective for sending me a copy of this book。 Content warnings: death, death of teenager, drugging, suggestion of sexual assault, mention of child pornography, extramarital affair 。。。more

2。5, rounded up。Honestly not bad, but quite forgettable at the end of the day。 The entire story took place during a single day, but the pacing felt so slow。 A lot of filler for what was a very bland mystery。 And a lot of little tidbits that never really went anywhere。 I felt like there was a good bit of potential to make this better and to increase the tension and suspense that was never followed through on。 I was invested in the lives of Nadine and her family, but not in the overall mystery。 Na 2。5, rounded up。Honestly not bad, but quite forgettable at the end of the day。 The entire story took place during a single day, but the pacing felt so slow。 A lot of filler for what was a very bland mystery。 And a lot of little tidbits that never really went anywhere。 I felt like there was a good bit of potential to make this better and to increase the tension and suspense that was never followed through on。 I was invested in the lives of Nadine and her family, but not in the overall mystery。 Nadine’s constant flipping between the past and present (the past giving us Colleen and Nadine’s grandparents, which was interesting) but the transitions were not as well done as I would have liked。 Nadine was not a very likeable or compelling character, yet somehow I understood her motives and sided with her。 While I don’t think I’ll be actively seeking out more of Amy Stuart’s novels, I don’t regret spending my Sunday reading this book。 。。。more

A fast-paced story that had me from the opening。 It takes place over a single day, a day where family secrets are revealed and — from a scene in the opening pages- the reader knows a murder is about to take place。 But who?

The rare book that lives up to the hype。 A brief prologue tells us someone dies at a dinner party。 Rewind to the morning of the party as the protagonist, Nadine, goes about the quotidian tasks of preparing for the party, slowly revealing all her secrets that culminate in the death。 Very hard to put down。 Some of complained about the detailed descriptions of the tasks, but they're missing the point of the brilliant structure。 Probably the best domestic thriller I've read in ages。 The rare book that lives up to the hype。 A brief prologue tells us someone dies at a dinner party。 Rewind to the morning of the party as the protagonist, Nadine, goes about the quotidian tasks of preparing for the party, slowly revealing all her secrets that culminate in the death。 Very hard to put down。 Some of complained about the detailed descriptions of the tasks, but they're missing the point of the brilliant structure。 Probably the best domestic thriller I've read in ages。 。。。more

A Death at the Party is a pretty solid domestic thriller, carefully plotted and executed properly。 There were a few lapses for sure, some plot points that didn't lead anywhere, but I could forgive as it didn't really hurt the main narrative。 I was engaged from first page to last, and that's all that matters。 This is my first Amy Stuart book, and it definitely won't be the last。 A Death at the Party is a pretty solid domestic thriller, carefully plotted and executed properly。 There were a few lapses for sure, some plot points that didn't lead anywhere, but I could forgive as it didn't really hurt the main narrative。 I was engaged from first page to last, and that's all that matters。 This is my first Amy Stuart book, and it definitely won't be the last。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 Yet another one that started slow & with too many characters, and for being about a “Death” at a party, it sure took a very, very long time to get to it。 Still, I liked the reveal, how all these people were connected by a past tragedy that was a whole lot more than thought 30 years ago…

A lot of loose ends。 The search for the person who is guilty for her aunt’s murder is cool, and there is a twist。 However, the ending could be better, in my opinion。 I would like to see the aftermath of this party。 If you don’t like loose ends, keep away from this book。

ARE YOU OK?We do not know if the narrator is ok or not。 She comes across as someone obsessive, overwrought, hyperactive and devious。 She accomplishes huge tasks and meets with more people in the 24 hours of the story than most people could accomplish in a year。 Of course, this means that the pace and plot of the story goes along in the same vein。The mother, grandmother and children speak with the Liberal use of the F word in every other sentence。 Apparently, this is completely acceptable in all ARE YOU OK?We do not know if the narrator is ok or not。 She comes across as someone obsessive, overwrought, hyperactive and devious。 She accomplishes huge tasks and meets with more people in the 24 hours of the story than most people could accomplish in a year。 Of course, this means that the pace and plot of the story goes along in the same vein。The mother, grandmother and children speak with the Liberal use of the F word in every other sentence。 Apparently, this is completely acceptable in all situations in this affluent culture。 The narrator’s easy-going husband is the only one in the family who can speak without needing an anger management course。The plot is interesting and moves very quickly。 Clues are given as to who the bad guy is so that it is not hard to guess who as you get into the last quarter of the book。 Of course, this story is not meant to be realistic。 The reader must accept and go with the flow。There were a few annoyances for me that kept repeating themselves。 The main character is asked by everyone who knows her if she is mentally well and if she feels alright。 This happens about 20 times and I am sorry now I didn’t keep track, just for fun, Also, almost every male character is handsome and most of them seem to have a thing for the hostess, Nadine。 Our hostess is a flawed but shrewd character as is her most brilliant, beautiful and successful writer/mother。 The daughter is gorgeous, the son is handsome and Nadine’s husband, the brilliant lawyer, has movie star looks and charm。 His role and everyone else’s, is to be a puppet for Nadine’s task lists of commands for each family member, friend and worker, to follow on a daily basis。 Oh, and Nadine’s husband is always ready to have sex wherever and whenever she tells him to。 The basement bathroom between the sink and the tub seems to be her favorite place, no matter that there are always about 15 people running around the house。 Her husband is seemingly ready to accommodate her on a moment’s notice, as Nadine is irresistible。 Did I mention this plot may not be entirely realistic?I gave the book a very generous four stars but it was entertaining and there was never a dull moment。 The plot was somewhat silly but an author of fiction can take liberties。 Actually, the plot was worth about three stars, but as I said, it was entertaining and I’m easy。 。。。more
