I guess Vaughan is not me type of writter。 I realize why people like him, and I see the value of his work, but I just cannot get myself to buy anymore of his comics。 In Saga, he explores the adventures of a family in a futuristic univers, without really getting into the scifi aspect of it。 This is a character story, and they are very well developed, but the constant adding of new characters and the "shock" full pages every couple of episodes feel tacky to me。The art is outstanding though。 I guess Vaughan is not me type of writter。 I realize why people like him, and I see the value of his work, but I just cannot get myself to buy anymore of his comics。 In Saga, he explores the adventures of a family in a futuristic univers, without really getting into the scifi aspect of it。 This is a character story, and they are very well developed, but the constant adding of new characters and the "shock" full pages every couple of episodes feel tacky to me。The art is outstanding though。 。。。more

Got off to a slow start and never really went anywhere。 It has lots of violence and action, which is drawn well。 It contains big sounding theory, but in the end, the story boils down to fluff。 I think this is in large part because the book(s) did not pick a direction: growing family drama, love story, revenge story, constant loss and reuniting, anti'-ist' story, war is hell, or any of the other themes it was constantly veering into。 It was still introducing new characters and concepts in the las Got off to a slow start and never really went anywhere。 It has lots of violence and action, which is drawn well。 It contains big sounding theory, but in the end, the story boils down to fluff。 I think this is in large part because the book(s) did not pick a direction: growing family drama, love story, revenge story, constant loss and reuniting, anti'-ist' story, war is hell, or any of the other themes it was constantly veering into。 It was still introducing new characters and concepts in the last few chapters。 I did not find any of the main characters all that fun or engaging。 Hazel as the naïve narrator just doesn't work for me as she's really bland, as are her parents。 Ghus was probably my favorite。 I will not be continuing the series。 If you're going to read a Vaughan, Y: The Last Man is much better, in my opinion。 。。。more

First 9 volumes combined。 I much preferred reading it all in one in the compendium… am I going to have to buy the next volumes individually yes… cannot wait for another compendium to come out in order to continue it。 Loved the character and family dynamics including the found family storylines。 The characters are so diverse and well developed, I got very emotionally invested。 The ending of Volume 9 killed me offff

I was really into Saga for the first volume, maybe two, but somewhere around the dragon sperm collection arc I just felt my enjoyment slipping。 I think it was a combination of the furry shock humor that got a bit old, the plot progressing at break-neck speed, characters dropping dead like flies every couple of numbers which made me emotionally numb to them because I felt like they were expendable。 Probably also that the focus on action detracted from the emotional core of the story for me。 I thi I was really into Saga for the first volume, maybe two, but somewhere around the dragon sperm collection arc I just felt my enjoyment slipping。 I think it was a combination of the furry shock humor that got a bit old, the plot progressing at break-neck speed, characters dropping dead like flies every couple of numbers which made me emotionally numb to them because I felt like they were expendable。 Probably also that the focus on action detracted from the emotional core of the story for me。 I think my favorite part was the brief moment of peace Hazel and Marko had that showed how hard it is for them to be a "normal" family because all of their issues and youth just swam up when they had a moment to relax。 I wish that was explored more。It's weird because I think this "shock" approach can be compared to GOT and how "No one is safe in GOT", but still I feel like a lot of time character deaths in GOT were set up and expected in a way, because they were (most of the time) the direct result of character actions and mistakes。 Whereas in Saga it felt a lot more random。 And also maybe the fact that each GOT book is like 1000+ pages long lets you emotionally unwind a bit after each death, so you can recuperate for the next shocking thing。Following up on that, I also think that me binging the series might have affected my overall opinion, but who knows。 It might have pissed me off even more to wait months for a chapter where everyone is miserable and then just dies。 In any case, kudos to the art because it is truly gorgeous, I just wish the story was a little more refined and mature。 。。。more

Oh, man。 Vaughn never fails to make me cry and get into an existential crisis。 Loved the illustration, the plot line, and the dynamic of the characters。 I’ve grown attached to each and every one of them…even the villains。 THAT’S when you know you’ve read a damn good book。Will definitely be continuing this series。

Not for the faint of heart。 A story of war that does not pull any punches。 Told over the span of many years, presents imperfect characters, just figuring life out and trying to make the most out of it in times of hardship。 I love that it is told in first person, by Hazel, the personified cornerstone of the plot。 Heartwarming, brutal and all of the above。

In the midst of reading for school this was a welcome bit of fun。The story is a welcome spin on the classic "lovers from different worlds" story, and the scope of the story and how many characters there are is really engaging。 I like the ways morality and sexuality are approached by the writer, and the undertones of religious oppression and purity culture are dealt with in a refreshing way。 I also find the art engaging and almost lyrical。I absolutely plan on continuing this series, but for now b In the midst of reading for school this was a welcome bit of fun。The story is a welcome spin on the classic "lovers from different worlds" story, and the scope of the story and how many characters there are is really engaging。 I like the ways morality and sexuality are approached by the writer, and the undertones of religious oppression and purity culture are dealt with in a refreshing way。 I also find the art engaging and almost lyrical。I absolutely plan on continuing this series, but for now back to the grind of education。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 INHALED this。 I’m glad I waited so long to read this because I couldn’t imagine having to wait between issues。 Saga is a perfect fever dream of a sci-fi。 It’s astounding how different the main AND alternate characters are。 They have distinct voices, thoughts, and sometimes even different fonts。 There is also no fear in killing off important/likable characters- because any act of violence can send ripples through the universe。 What is the opposite of war? Fucking。

Exceptional graphic novel。 Continuing themes of found family, peace, growth and just accurately capturing a ton of the human condition。 "Voice-over" work is beyond poignant and it is unsettling and unflinching around relationships。 Extremely graphic at times (from a violence, drugs, and sexuality lens) but the story earns those moments。 A world worth getting lost in - a world where you can see pieces of yourself scattered throughout both themes and characters。 Highly recommended for anyone above Exceptional graphic novel。 Continuing themes of found family, peace, growth and just accurately capturing a ton of the human condition。 "Voice-over" work is beyond poignant and it is unsettling and unflinching around relationships。 Extremely graphic at times (from a violence, drugs, and sexuality lens) but the story earns those moments。 A world worth getting lost in - a world where you can see pieces of yourself scattered throughout both themes and characters。 Highly recommended for anyone above the age of 18。 Deeply moving。 。。。more

I’ve seen a common critisism for this book is that is just kinda is one adventure after another, truely a saga and there is some lack of forethought or foreshadowing long game (especially apparent after binging the series like this in one go)。 However, I find that makes this series especially compelling and unique。 It’s more similar to reading a biography than a hardcore sci fi fantasy book。 The themes of family and parenting made this series especially unique within its genre。 There’s certainly I’ve seen a common critisism for this book is that is just kinda is one adventure after another, truely a saga and there is some lack of forethought or foreshadowing long game (especially apparent after binging the series like this in one go)。 However, I find that makes this series especially compelling and unique。 It’s more similar to reading a biography than a hardcore sci fi fantasy book。 The themes of family and parenting made this series especially unique within its genre。 There’s certainly some controversial stuff here as mentioned in other reviews that I didn’t love, I。e。 a crap ton of explicit content but otherwise I enjoyed the story and will likely read the newer books as they are released。 。。。more

Quick disclaimer: although I do own this edition, I actually read Saga in the trade paperbacks。 I actually haven't cracked open this particular tome yet。Saga is, hands down, my favorite comic of all time。 Fiona Staples art is consistently gorgeous and brings Brian K。 Vaughans characters to vivid life。And this story is a proper saga in the classical sense。 It's a long, meandering chronicle of the life of one very special (but also not all that special at all) girl, and all the lives she effects。 Quick disclaimer: although I do own this edition, I actually read Saga in the trade paperbacks。 I actually haven't cracked open this particular tome yet。Saga is, hands down, my favorite comic of all time。 Fiona Staples art is consistently gorgeous and brings Brian K。 Vaughans characters to vivid life。And this story is a proper saga in the classical sense。 It's a long, meandering chronicle of the life of one very special (but also not all that special at all) girl, and all the lives she effects。 Everyone from her large, eccentric extended family to all the people who want her dead for various reasons (and there is significant overlap between those groups), nobody is the same as they were at the start of this tale。Fundamentally, this a story about cycles of violence。 Very few of the tragedies that unfold would have happened if the powers that be could just leave well enough alone。 The family at the heart of this story just want to live their lives and be left alone。 They don't want to be at the center of a galactic war, but the forces perpetuating that war just can't let that happen。 All the death and tragedy stems from that: the simple inability to put prejudices aside and just let people live。 It's a message that rings loud and clear in our world, more so today than when this comic began。 。。。more

“Saga” has been recommended to me for years but I never had the chance to read it until now, and I really do wish I had sooner。 Saga is an epic tale like no other space opera or fantasy story I have encountered。 Saga has traces of “Star Wars”, “Doctor Who”, Tolkien's works, “The Incal”, Romeo & Juliet, etc。 and then has a lot of X-rated content mixed in for good measure。 The latter makes the series extremely NSFW and definitely not for kids。 Yet despite the softcore/hardcore porn imagery and the “Saga” has been recommended to me for years but I never had the chance to read it until now, and I really do wish I had sooner。 Saga is an epic tale like no other space opera or fantasy story I have encountered。 Saga has traces of “Star Wars”, “Doctor Who”, Tolkien's works, “The Incal”, Romeo & Juliet, etc。 and then has a lot of X-rated content mixed in for good measure。 The latter makes the series extremely NSFW and definitely not for kids。 Yet despite the softcore/hardcore porn imagery and the hodgepodge of influences, Saga's central love story that spans wars, species, and Galaxies flows together nicely and is emotionally investing。 Luckily, the story wasn't spoiled to me at all as I read the entire compendium, thus this is the first comic series in a long time I have read where I was frequently startled when turning the page and seeing something shockingly violent, sexual, etc。 Even better was when I turned the page and was startled by a well-written plot development (particularly in the final issues that close out this compendium)。 Besides the shock value, this made the journeys of Saga's characters all the more impactful。 Brian K。 Vaughn has crafted a very relatable story/universe (well unless you don't have as eccentric a sex drive as some of these characters) and due to the themes (i。e。, debates about war, abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights), it feels like our own reality。 Besides Vaughn's story, what remains consistent throughout is the quality of Fiona Staples' artwork。 It's such a shocking juxtaposition seeing such adult content put side by side with sometimes cute-looking creatures but Staples' work is beautiful and the art sticks with a reader just as much as the writing。 As for character designs, while I wish the series had less aliens that were merely human-animal hybrids, most of the characters did stand out and could be just as uniquely original as the storyline。 The highlights for me were the Robot Kingdom aliens (possibly evolutionary offshoots of the Teletubbies) - - and the alien Ghüs who looks exactly like my childhood teddy bear (as a result of the similarities I spent the whole time reading this compendium worrying Ghüs would be brutally murdered like so many other character in this series) Reading this first compendium of "Saga" was eye-opening and unlike the comparable "Incal" (which was fine but didn't quite impress me like I wanted it to), the contents of the volume left its mark on me and I can't wait to read more。 I'm not sure if I recommend reading the compendium or breaking it up into each graphic novel but regardless I can't recommend the series enough for comic fans, sci-fi fans, NSFW adult content fans, and anyone that's looking to read anything that's not quite like what they've read before。 I will close out with one quote that I think perfectly describes Saga's story and its philosophical view on life (both in its insanely bonkers universe as well as our own):"Dying is one of the few experiences we'll all eventually experience firsthand, and like most s**t that's commonplace that's boring to dwell on。 My fellow inmates/classmates (and really what's the difference?) showed me it was more interesting to concentrate on the living。 Because death is f***ing predictable but life has science experiments and free time and surprise naps and who knows what comes next?" 。。。more
