Summary

'Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird。'

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl。 Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the thirties。 The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice。 But the weight of history will only tolerate so much。

To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama of the Great Depression and a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition。

This is THE book where the characters stay with the reader, and feel more like childhood friends。 The characters are poignant。 The moral, ethical and sociological issues are important。 This book is a study in racism, oppression, white privilege and hegemony。

Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, was intriguing to me because of all the things, both good and bad, that I’ve heard about this book。 After reading it myself, I have come to the conclusion that this is a must read for everybody。 This book follows the Finch family consisting of Atticus, the father, Jem and Scout, his children。 The setting is during the Great Depression, but focuses on the unrest in the community regarding those of color。 I couldn’t help but notice the similarities in this Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, was intriguing to me because of all the things, both good and bad, that I’ve heard about this book。 After reading it myself, I have come to the conclusion that this is a must read for everybody。 This book follows the Finch family consisting of Atticus, the father, Jem and Scout, his children。 The setting is during the Great Depression, but focuses on the unrest in the community regarding those of color。 I couldn’t help but notice the similarities in this story to what’s going on in the world today。 I grew to really love Atticus, as a father and as a lawyer, because not only did he stand up for what was right in regards to his client, Tom Robinson, but he taught his children and tried to teach those of his community that all people are equal, regardless of the color of their skin。 He was written as an inspiring character who, through his kindness and respect towards all men, was used as a teacher to those reading the book。 This book is full of life lessons and doesn’t just deal with the subject of race。 Harper Lee shows that all people deserve love and respect as shown through the second relationship throughout the book of Scout and Boo Radley。 She learned through her own experience that not all people are what they seem。 I cannot give this book enough praise, and I think that it should be required reading for all high school students。 。。。more

I LOVED this book! I think it's worthy of the title of my favourite book (maybe 2nd to Little Women though。。。)I read this for my class and while controversial among my classmates, the discussions we had about it were the funnestp。s。 also, the reading dates are wrong bc I do not remember what dates I read it) I LOVED this book! I am so glad that I read that book。 Not only is this story about prejudice against black people but how they lived during the Great Depression。 I would recommend that book to everyone especially that we are dealing with racism every day and right after the killing of George Floyd, the second part reminded me how Tom was found guilty of raping a white young girl and was killed afterwards shot 17 times trying to climb the prison fence because of a mental breakdown。 It’s sad how this story is still I am so glad that I read that book。 Not only is this story about prejudice against black people but how they lived during the Great Depression。 I would recommend that book to everyone especially that we are dealing with racism every day and right after the killing of George Floyd, the second part reminded me how Tom was found guilty of raping a white young girl and was killed afterwards shot 17 times trying to climb the prison fence because of a mental breakdown。 It’s sad how this story is still happening today in real society, black people being killed by white police officers and they got away with desk duty or suspension。 。。。more

Just finished reading this classic (for the second time yet not really qualifying the first time since that was as a completely oblivious child with a distaste for school and everything imposed in that setting)。 Please don’t misinterpret the lack of a rating given; this book is exceptional, however, I’m not prone to rate books as it’s such a subjective thing and the truth is every book I’ve ever completed (including To Kill A Mockingbird) has been simultaneously rewarding, illuminating, interest Just finished reading this classic (for the second time yet not really qualifying the first time since that was as a completely oblivious child with a distaste for school and everything imposed in that setting)。 Please don’t misinterpret the lack of a rating given; this book is exceptional, however, I’m not prone to rate books as it’s such a subjective thing and the truth is every book I’ve ever completed (including To Kill A Mockingbird) has been simultaneously rewarding, illuminating, interesting and of value (same as rewarding but a slightly different tone)。Was planning to immediately watch the film but upon searching Google for a streaming location discovered that the IPIC Theater of Fort Lee, New Jersey has an actual showing of the 1951 version a week from Sunday (April 11, 2021)。 Just purchased a ticket ($14) and there are several seats still available。 If anyone is interested and would like to see the film visit the IPIC website and/or if you’d like to meet and make it a joint venture send a private message through Goodreads。 。。。more

Again, I read this book for school。 I really enjoyed it and was intrigued, but it’s not what I normally read or what I’m typically interested in。 It had a very satisfying end, and I was a huge fan of all of the hidden symbols and motifs。 Very good read and highly recommended。

I had to read this book for school, and I was excited to read it because all I had ever heard was that this book was amazing。 Honestly。。。I was disappointed。 I understand all of the deep themes of racism and hypocrisy throughout the book, but it was just a really long, elaborate, drawn out story of how Jem broke his arm。

This book is known as a classic, at least to some。 I have learned to appreciate certain aspects of classics, and disagree with others。 I don’t appreciate the swearing and whatnot, which most, if not all, classics have。 The overall story is rather strange and different from what one might expect from the title。 I would give this book a two out of five stars because I don’t really enjoy reading classics。 I can understand that they have value, that they can teach lessons, teach about what life was This book is known as a classic, at least to some。 I have learned to appreciate certain aspects of classics, and disagree with others。 I don’t appreciate the swearing and whatnot, which most, if not all, classics have。 The overall story is rather strange and different from what one might expect from the title。 I would give this book a two out of five stars because I don’t really enjoy reading classics。 I can understand that they have value, that they can teach lessons, teach about what life was like during certain time periods and more。 I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone unless they need it for an English class assignment or something like that。 Otherwise, if a person is looking for a book to read for fun, in my opinion, this book is not the right book。 。。。more

I simply enjoyed reading this book because it was narrated from the POV of a kid。 All the characters in this book taught me a lesson or two。 Hands down, Atticus was my most favorite character because of how morally great he was。 I loved how Scout and Jem evolved throughout the book。 This book has a thing or two to teach everyone who reads it。 I will definitely reread this book again。Oh one more point, there was a lot of southern references that was hard to follow which would make me give it 4 st I simply enjoyed reading this book because it was narrated from the POV of a kid。 All the characters in this book taught me a lesson or two。 Hands down, Atticus was my most favorite character because of how morally great he was。 I loved how Scout and Jem evolved throughout the book。 This book has a thing or two to teach everyone who reads it。 I will definitely reread this book again。Oh one more point, there was a lot of southern references that was hard to follow which would make me give it 4 stars but the message conveyed and the writing of this book will trump the small mistakes in it。 。。。more

Reading 2021Book 25: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper LeeYES, this is my first ever reading of To Kill a Mockingbird。 It was not assigned reading for me in high school, nor did I read when my kids went to high school。 Not really sure a summary is needed here as many have already read this book。 So I will let Amazon tell it "A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities thro Reading 2021Book 25: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper LeeYES, this is my first ever reading of To Kill a Mockingbird。 It was not assigned reading for me in high school, nor did I read when my kids went to high school。 Not really sure a summary is needed here as many have already read this book。 So I will let Amazon tell it "A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime。"So here is my unpopular opinion on this book, it did not knock my socks off🤷。 There will be no rave review of how amazing this story was or how I cannot believe I had not read it until now。 Maybe it was the hype and all the 5⭐ratings from friends, not sure。 The book was slow, in some parts vague, other parts were on fire。 I enjoyed Scout, Jem, Atticus, and the host of other characters。 When I read the last page and closed the book I was not really left with any feeling one way or the other。 My rating 3。5⭐。 。。。more
