Summary

Shoot Down the Sun

The bloody war against the Wen Clan once led Wei Wuxian to seek power in demonic cultivation, and the dark acts he committed drove a wedge between him and Lan Wangji。 Now, those old sins come back to haunt him as his reincarnated identity is revealed to the cultivation world。 But even as the other clans call for Wei Wuxian’s death, Lan Wangji stands by him, making Wei Wuxian realize what he took for disapproval in the past might have been a much deeper emotion。

Nice to get some more background on what the Sunshot Campaign was and the conflict of the other cultivation clans against the Wen Clan, as well as more information about Jiang Cheng's trauma, his relationship with Jin Ling, some more background on Wen Ning, and greater insights into the complicated relationship between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian。 We spent a LOT of time in the past in this volume, so I'm hoping the fourth has a little more focus in the present。 Overall, I'm very delighted with thi Nice to get some more background on what the Sunshot Campaign was and the conflict of the other cultivation clans against the Wen Clan, as well as more information about Jiang Cheng's trauma, his relationship with Jin Ling, some more background on Wen Ning, and greater insights into the complicated relationship between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian。 We spent a LOT of time in the past in this volume, so I'm hoping the fourth has a little more focus in the present。 Overall, I'm very delighted with this story and excited to keep going! 。。。more

Another fun addition to the series that further explores the past relationships between the characters。 This book is set in the past and focuses mostly on giving more context to Wei Wuxian's origin and the nature of his current relationships with Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng。 The timeline's can be a little hard to follow due to the lack of clear demarcations of time but the pacing and characters were so strong that they carried me through any confusion in the narrative。 Another fun addition to the series that further explores the past relationships between the characters。 This book is set in the past and focuses mostly on giving more context to Wei Wuxian's origin and the nature of his current relationships with Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng。 The timeline's can be a little hard to follow due to the lack of clear demarcations of time but the pacing and characters were so strong that they carried me through any confusion in the narrative。 。。。more

"Nothing," Wei WuXian answered。 He was a bit smug, like he had done something naughty。 Oh, this one was fun。 The romance really begins to pick up and it offers such a needed reprieve from the flashbacks getting even darker and more serious。 It's very well-balanced to keep the read enjoyable and entertaining, while also offering a satisfying story。 I literally could not put this book down and read the entire thing in a day。 That said, I feel the translation fell down a bit here。 It was genuine "Nothing," Wei WuXian answered。 He was a bit smug, like he had done something naughty。 Oh, this one was fun。 The romance really begins to pick up and it offers such a needed reprieve from the flashbacks getting even darker and more serious。 It's very well-balanced to keep the read enjoyable and entertaining, while also offering a satisfying story。 I literally could not put this book down and read the entire thing in a day。 That said, I feel the translation fell down a bit here。 It was genuinely difficult to understand some of the situations due to the way the translators chose to translate the names? It's a very strange middle ground where some sentences are translated extremely western and some sentences retain more Chinese construction。。。 it's a bit sloppy。 But manageable。 。。。more

yeah idk I wish I liked this volume more but it was just a little too many flashbacks for me and wish there was a little more present story progression happening as well

Pretty good, pretty entertaining, although I don't feel like this added a ton to the plot - once again, most of the time was spent in backstory and flashbacks。 Jiang Yanli and her relationship with Wuxian is the high point of this book for me。 I do have to comment that some of the quirks of the translation - the amount of exclamation points/shouting, the excessively-typed out laughter - are starting to wear on me a little。 Heck of a cliffhanger to end on, though! I’ve watched the MDZS live action drama twice, watched the MDZS dongua (anime) once, read a fan translation once and am now reading the official English translation, and yet I am moved to tears by the same things。 This volume includes -The Wen Clan’s famous schooling retreat-The cave scene -Lotus Pier under siege-My darling Wen Ning-The first time at the burial mounds-Revenge-The Hunt

Lan Wangji said , enunciating each word as clearly as he could, “Return to Gusu with me。”

Did I read this entire book in one day even though I just read it three months ago? Yes。 Will I read it again in the future? Yes。

Reading this brought me to tears because of how heavily I related to Wei Wuxian。 I’m excited to read the final novel of the series!

StatsWriting - 7/10Plot - 6/10Characters - 10/10World-Building - 7/10As I mentioned with Vols 1 and 2, I have only read the English-translated novel, so it's difficult to truly rate it or compare it to the original Chinese version, but I have done my best with the resources I have。The writing was about the same as the other 2 volumes。 I thought it was pretty decent。 Since this is a translation, it's difficult to say how the integrity of the writing carried over。 I standby what I said before in StatsWriting - 7/10Plot - 6/10Characters - 10/10World-Building - 7/10As I mentioned with Vols 1 and 2, I have only read the English-translated novel, so it's difficult to truly rate it or compare it to the original Chinese version, but I have done my best with the resources I have。The writing was about the same as the other 2 volumes。 I thought it was pretty decent。 Since this is a translation, it's difficult to say how the integrity of the writing carried over。 I standby what I said before in that I wish that the names and places had maintained the tonal symbols from Mandarin as I feel like that would have made it easier to pronounce everything properly。I am not entirely sure what the plot was in Vol 3。 In Vol 2, we ended in the present period with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji fleeing Jin Guangyao and Golden Carp Tower, but Vol 3 starts in the past。 In this, we mostly follow Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng as they deal with the Wen Clan。 We also have to deal with the genocide of the Jiang Clan and Wei Wuxian helping Jiang Cheng regain his golden core。 Then, we see how Wei Wuxian ended up in the Yiling Burial Mounds, but then we skip forward in time to Lan Wangi and Wei Wuxian going back to the Yiling Burial Mounts。 The plot was a bit confusing, and while I did like it, it was difficult to see what the overall plot was。 I still love all the characters。 This is an amazing enemies-to-lovers, grumpy vs。 sunshine novel。 The tension between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji is incredible, and it was so cute as they get closer and closer to admitting their true feelings。 I also love that we got to see Wei Wuxian going into his baddie phase in his first lifetime and Lan Wangji trying to save the man he loves from destroying himself, and boy it is soooo good。 I still loved the world-building aspect of this book。 It really is a great way to get into Chinese cultivation fantasy。 If you're someone who likes Progression-style fantasies, you might like this as well。 I do like that we are finally getting into more of what "demonic" cultivation is。 Overall, I found this to be a comfort book, a cute romance set in a fantasy world that I enjoyed immensely。 。。。more

very entertaining and gay but honestly this version of wei wuxian was a bit evil for my taste。 to me, one of the core elements of his character is that he only learns demonic cultivation after being backed into a corner with no other options, and then despite trying to use it for good, he's condemned because it's unorthodox。 sure there's some graverobbing and it's morally a little sus, but ultimately the cultivation world condemns him bc it's new and different, *not* bc he's super evil。 whereas very entertaining and gay but honestly this version of wei wuxian was a bit evil for my taste。 to me, one of the core elements of his character is that he only learns demonic cultivation after being backed into a corner with no other options, and then despite trying to use it for good, he's condemned because it's unorthodox。 sure there's some graverobbing and it's morally a little sus, but ultimately the cultivation world condemns him bc it's new and different, *not* bc he's super evil。 whereas the wei wuxian of this volume who tortures wen chao to death。。。 honestly seems pretty evil to me。 。。。more

I can't get enough of this amazing story。 I have fallen in love completely。 I love everything about it。 I can't express my gratitude for the author for writing a such beautiful novel。 Everything is perfect。 Well, if Wei Wuxian was less stupid, it would be even more perfect 😂I adore him, but, Gosh! He is so blind! Poor Lan Zhan! I am so curious of how they will be together。This story wasn't so painful as the second novel。 I don't know if I like the second one more。 In fact, I can't decide if I ha I can't get enough of this amazing story。 I have fallen in love completely。 I love everything about it。 I can't express my gratitude for the author for writing a such beautiful novel。 Everything is perfect。 Well, if Wei Wuxian was less stupid, it would be even more perfect 😂I adore him, but, Gosh!
