Summary

In ten dazzling stories, Saba Sams dives into the world of girlhood and immerses us in its contradictions and complexities: growing up too quickly, yet not quickly enough; taking possession of what one can, while being taken possession of; succumbing to societal pressure but also orchestrating that pressure。 These young women are feral yet attentive, fierce yet vulnerable, exploited yet exploitative。

Threading between clubs at closing time, pub toilets, drenched music festivals and beach holidays, these unforgettable short stories deftly chart the treacherous terrain of growing up - of intense friendships, of ambivalent mothers, of uneasily blended families, and of learning to truly live in your own body。

With striking wit, originality and tenderness, Send Nudes celebrates the small victories in a world that tries to claim each young woman as its own。

It's nigh on impossible to find a short story collection where you like every single story。 I thought these stories were original and I enjoyed most of them。 It's nigh on impossible to find a short story collection where you like every single story。 I thought these stories were original and I enjoyed most of them。 。。。more

It's always hard to rate short story collections, but this one definitively fell short for me。 The only stories I really liked were Tinderloin, Snakebite, and Here Alone。 All of which I could've read online instead of paying 17 bucks for this collection。。。 It's always hard to rate short story collections, but this one definitively fell short for me。 The only stories I really liked were Tinderloin, Snakebite, and Here Alone。 All of which I could've read online instead of paying 17 bucks for this collection。。。 。。。more

so i saw this book and liked the looks of the cover and the name so started to read it lol。 the first story was wild and then realised it’s a series of short stories。 some of them were more captivating than others and i found the shorter ones kinda easy to read but all in all i enjoyed。 i’m glad i picked something different to read even tho i didn’t know they were short stories (yeah i should start reading blurbs rather than looking at covers hehe)。 i especially liked the bread and the first one so i saw this book and liked the looks of the cover and the name so started to read it lol。 the first story was wild and then realised it’s a series of short stories。 some of them were more captivating than others and i found the shorter ones kinda easy to read but all in all i enjoyed。 i’m glad i picked something different to read even tho i didn’t know they were short stories (yeah i should start reading blurbs rather than looking at covers hehe)。 i especially liked the bread and the first one。 i cant remember them all 。。。more

The strongest four i've ever given, and that is not because it was not good enough or 'just' entertaining, which my usual fours stands for: some shorts stories in this collection is 5/5, while some are more between 3-4,5。 I really enjoyed 'Here Alone', 'Snakebite', 'Blue 4eva' and 'The Bread', but my favorite is the title story 'Send nudes'。 Really refreshing perspective on girlhood and female sexuality。 Highly recommended read nevertheless。 The estetically pleasing cover is not making anything The strongest four i've ever given, and that is not because it was not good enough or 'just' entertaining, which my usual fours stands for: some shorts stories in this collection is 5/5, while some are more between 3-4,5。 I really enjoyed 'Here Alone', 'Snakebite', 'Blue 4eva' and 'The Bread', but my favorite is the title story 'Send nudes'。 Really refreshing perspective on girlhood and female sexuality。 Highly recommended read nevertheless。 The estetically pleasing cover is not making anything worse either。 。。。more

I wanted to read a collection of short stories to break up my reading having recently read a number of books that I didn't really enjoy much and this one had lots of good recommendations in the media。 Sadly I feel disappointed by it。 Almost every story centres around the protagonist's sex life with mostly random strangers, which after a couple of stories just becomes a bit boring。 Even the stories that don't centre around the characters having sex or looking for sex don't seem to really have muc I wanted to read a collection of short stories to break up my reading having recently read a number of books that I didn't really enjoy much and this one had lots of good recommendations in the media。 Sadly I feel disappointed by it。 Almost every story centres around the protagonist's sex life with mostly random strangers, which after a couple of stories just becomes a bit boring。 Even the stories that don't centre around the characters having sex or looking for sex don't seem to really have much of a point and just seem to end when the author has got bored of writing them。Maybe I'm just the wrong generation for this type of book ! 。。。more

I want to start by saying I think it’s really important we start expecting (dare I say hold accountable even?) more publishers and authors to include content or trigger warnings to their books。 This book deals with potentially quite traumatic themes for some people and I feel there should be a preface or designated CW area to list those。 Short story collections tend to be a mixed bag。 Very much in that spirit, I found ‘Send Nudes’ average; neither disappointing nor outstanding。 The majority of c I want to start by saying I think it’s really important we start expecting (dare I say hold accountable even?) more publishers and authors to include content or trigger warnings to their books。 This book deals with potentially quite traumatic themes for some people and I feel there should be a preface or designated CW area to list those。 Short story collections tend to be a mixed bag。 Very much in that spirit, I found ‘Send Nudes’ average; neither disappointing nor outstanding。 The majority of characters exuded a passive, resigned vibe and many of them were caught in depressing or, let’s say, suboptimal situations and, admittedly, I do not usually love that type of story or character trope。 Some of said situations also felt quite easily escapable, and generally, writing characters perpetuating or remaining stuck in those, tends to annoy me; though I do take time to interrogate why that is。That said, I did actually quite enjoy ‘Overnight’, ‘Here Alone’, and ‘Blue 4eva’; I found the characters a bit more relatable, and felt the stories managed to convey a strange type of optimism despite the main characters’ often hopeless circumstances。 These three stories managed to celebrate life’s small victories the best and create that much coveted wink of unspoken understanding or shared experience between author and reader。 Overall, sad girl literature –I am not using the term derogatorily or belittlingly by the way– is not really my thing, and predictably enough I was not blown away by this collection。 However, I do expect it to gain quite a cult following, if it doesn’t have one already…Finally, even though the collection has been promoted as featuring ‘coming of age’ stories and exploring the complexities of growing up, I felt that was inaccurate。 Many of the characters are in their late 20s, 30s, or older, but even the teenage characters did not necessarily seem to be going through a ‘coming of age’ experience。 I think it would be more accurate to describe these stories as ‘slice of life’ instead。 No favourite lines from this one I am afraid…⚠️ TRIGGER WARNINGS:• Abortion• Toxic Relationships • Self-harm• Alcohol & substance (ab-)use• Adult/minor relationship • Child neglect• Body shaming (internalised and external) 。。。more

was it a startling exploration of the complexities of girlhood in the twenty-first century or was it merely shocking for the sake of being shocking? none of the stories were terrible, but none of them were really great either。 they were all somewhat entertaining in a voyeuristic sort of way。 'snakebite' was probably the best。i need to stop reading that specific genre of 'sad-girl-in-her-twenties-doesn't-fit-in-with-society' book because i never end up enjoying them。 was it a startling exploration of the complexities of girlhood in the twenty-first century or was it merely shocking for the sake of being shocking? none of the stories were terrible, but none of them were really great either。 they were all somewhat entertaining in a voyeuristic sort of way。 'snakebite' was probably the best。i need to stop reading that specific genre of 'sad-girl-in-her-twenties-doesn't-fit-in-with-society' book because i never end up enjoying them。 。。。more

I thought it was a truly beautiful collection of stories。 I was exposed to worlds I hadn’t ever been exposed to before and I believe that the stories really encapsulated my experiences and feelings of growing up as a woman perfectly, albeit through voices different to my own。 The final story was a beautiful piece about the relationship between mother and daughter which brought tears to my eyes。 A must read for sure。

4。5/5 stars。 I thought this was so interesting and, while I preferred some stories over others ("Tinderloin" was particularly arresting), I was engaged the entire time。 Very thought-provoking and surprisingly compelling for a short story collection, which is usually not my jam。 4。5/5 stars。 I thought this was so interesting and, while I preferred some stories over others ("Tinderloin" was particularly arresting), I was engaged the entire time。 Very thought-provoking and surprisingly compelling for a short story collection, which is usually not my jam。 。。。more

To be honest, the overly-provocative title undersells this book。This is a really excellent collection of short stories。 The prose is crisp and raw。 Sams is economical with words, and can sum up an entire life in one sentence。 The characters are inventive and full of life。 They have complex, realistic relationships with one another。It's appropriate that the book starts with a Mary Gaitskill quote given how similar their writing styles are。My favorite stories were Snakebite, Flying Kite and Blue 4 To be honest, the overly-provocative title undersells this book。This is a really excellent collection of short stories。 The prose is crisp and raw。 Sams is economical with words, and can sum up an entire life in one sentence。 The characters are inventive and full of life。 They have complex, realistic relationships with one another。It's appropriate that the book starts with a Mary Gaitskill quote given how similar their writing styles are。My favorite stories were Snakebite, Flying Kite and Blue 4eva。 。。。more

Came to this collection after reading "Blue 4eva" and having mixed feelings about it, and that feeling carried over to these stories - but I kind of like that。 A collection of stories ought to show you different aspects of a writer, allow you to see their skills under different lights and circumstances。 For me, the standouts were "Blue 4eva" which felt like a sumptuous, sensual teen-girl reimagining of A Bigger Splash; "Flying Kite", which took me completely by surprise, had the emotional follow Came to this collection after reading "Blue 4eva" and having mixed feelings about it, and that feeling carried over to these stories - but I kind of like that。 A collection of stories ought to show you different aspects of a writer, allow you to see their skills under different lights and circumstances。 For me, the standouts were "Blue 4eva" which felt like a sumptuous, sensual teen-girl reimagining of A Bigger Splash; "Flying Kite", which took me completely by surprise, had the emotional follow-through that lacked in other stories and made me cry in a Waterstones cafe; and "The Bread" - I really enjoyed the fragmentary way this was written, with the story's themes wrapped around wry nods to sourdough starters and horoscopes as millennial coping mechanisms。 Also really enjoyed "Snakebite" although the narrator's passivity was frustrating, "The Mothers and the Girls" and "Today's Square", with slight reservations about their endings feeling rushed。 It may be Sams' intention to lead us slowly up to sudden endings, which is totally fair, I just felt they didn't always land。 I think her setups are so good that sometimes the endings by contrast left me thinking "is that it?"。 The opening story, "Tinderloin", great title aside, was the weakest one to me。 A great setup and compelling hook with a distinct voice, but it seemed to unravel at the end and read more like a cheesy soap opera。 "Overnight" had some really great moments but ultimately felt quite forgettable, like it could have been made into more, and "Send Nudes" again had its moments but for being the title story, I think I wanted more exploration and interrogation of that dynamic and behaviour。 "Here Alone" was well written but just made me so sad! Sams is very skilled at creating female characters and narrators whose isolation and introspection you can absolutely FEEL, which isn't always pleasant but is very effective。 She has a knack for tapping into the inherent isolation that comes with a lot of our modern tools for communication。 There's a recurrent cynicism or pessimism, ironic and aloof, in some of the stories which at times feels put on to fulfil the demands of a trend, but I think this is something Sams will develop beyond as she grows as a writer。 The stories that resonated most for me were the ones that held a lot of empathy and warmth, or weren't so determined towards defeatism。 In particular, I had never read a story that described the process of abortion the way "The Bread" did, which really resonated, and I loved the depiction of a mother-daugter relationship within the pandemic in "Today's Square"。 I like the contemporariness of Sams' subject matter and how she conjures so vividly the recognisable details of growing up in the UK in the mid-2000s onwards。 Our media is saturated by the nostalgic hallmarks of American childhoods, so it was a treat to see things I grew up with imbued with the same kind of magic。 Her writing is overall quite sparse and to the point, but her settings - which are varied and by turns romantic and mundane - stick to you somehow, like sugary drinks on the underside of your wrist, or a bitter taste at the back of your throat。 In a lot of the stories there's also this sense that at any moment, reality could turn on its head and become something surreal and dark and unpredictable, perhaps even supernatural。 So that's an exciting tension, the off-tilt way she renders recognisable moments and situations。Overall, a solid debut collection that challenged me to sit in my discomfort a bit and think more deeply about the construction of a short story。 Really interested to see where Saba Sams goes next。 。。。more

I have yet to find a short story collection where every single story becomes a favorite, but “Send Nudes” came close!
