Summary

For the first time ever, a special enhanced edition of the enchanting prelude to The Lord of the Rings, illustrated throughout with over 50 sketches, drawings, paintings and maps by J。 R。 R。 Tolkien himself and with the complete text printed in two colours。
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End。 But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’。 They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon…

Written for J。R。R。 Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit was published on 21 September 1937。 With a beautiful cover design, a handful of black & white drawings and two maps by the author himself, the book became an instant success and was reprinted shortly afterwards with five colour plates。

Tolkien’s own selection of finished paintings and drawings have become inseparable from his text, adorning editions of The Hobbit for more than 85 years。 But the published art has afforded only a glimpse of Tolkien’s creative process, and many additional sketches, coloured drawings and maps – although exhibited and published elsewhere – have never appeared within the pages of The Hobbit。

In this unique enhanced edition of Tolkien’s enchanting classic tale, the full panoply of his art is reproduced for the first time, presenting more than 50 illustrations to accompany Bilbo Baggins on his adventure ‘there and back again’。

Wonderful book, but not entirely to my taste。My only real criticism of The Hobbit is that it drags, mildly, in the early-middle。 The rest is simply up to personal preferences, and I could tell while reading it I would have loved it as a child and the whole novel feels like it is supposed to be read aloud by parents for their children, which I will do in the future。The ending is phenomenal (though this might just be because I came off the back of American Gods), and the writing is beautiful, if s Wonderful book, but not entirely to my taste。My only real criticism of The Hobbit is that it drags, mildly, in the early-middle。 The rest is simply up to personal preferences, and I could tell while reading it I would have loved it as a child and the whole novel feels like it is supposed to be read aloud by parents for their children, which I will do in the future。The ending is phenomenal (though this might just be because I came off the back of American Gods), and the writing is beautiful, if slightly confusing if reading at a normal pace。 Some words are also overused, which can have comedic effect in some cases (such as using the descriptor "queer" in "queer lodgings" three times, which is unfortunate given the redefining)。 Overall it is a timeless and solid book, and for children。 With the predictability of the plot it is a "comfy" read for adults, but I wouldn't say I fall into that category of reader。 。。。more

Better in my opinion than LOTR because it tells an equally gripping story of a magical world but in a much clearer tone which avoids the tediousness of LOTR。 I love fantasy in the arts because I believe it should take us to places we can’t go to。

Some parts were entertaining enough while others simply put me to sleep。 Descriptions of landscapes were hard to picture in my head。

I think it's safe to say that The Hobbit is my comfort read。 People who know me well enough know that I absolutely adore Middle-Earth, so it's no wonder that this little book is at the top of my favourite list。 It's so cosy and always makes me yearn for a hobbit-hole of my own。 The story itself is very engaging and really makes me feel immersed in it, as if I'm too part of the Company and share their defeats and triumphs。 Moreover, there are so many lessons to be learnt from this tale, and so ma I think it's safe to say that The Hobbit is my comfort read。 People who know me well enough know that I absolutely adore Middle-Earth, so it's no wonder that this little book is at the top of my favourite list。 It's so cosy and always makes me yearn for a hobbit-hole of my own。 The story itself is very engaging and really makes me feel immersed in it, as if I'm too part of the Company and share their defeats and triumphs。 Moreover, there are so many lessons to be learnt from this tale, and so many wonderful quotes to be found throughout。 Really recommend this to anyone who would like to give Tolkien a try but feels intimidated by the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as to any fan of fantasy books。 。。。more

I loved listening to the audio version of this book。 I really got the sense of adventure and felt sucked back into the story every time I picked it back up。

Lovely writing, obviously an early creative masterpiece in the genre, and the kids really enjoyed it。 I personally don't love long adventure stories so I would have preferred less action and a more intimate tone。 I enjoyed the growth of Bilbo from being very adventure-averse to finding his courage。 Lovely writing, obviously an early creative masterpiece in the genre, and the kids really enjoyed it。 I personally don't love long adventure stories so I would have preferred less action and a more intimate tone。 I enjoyed the growth of Bilbo from being very adventure-averse to finding his courage。 。。。more

I never read this before。 Only grew up with the old movie and the new ones。 I really enjoyed, even though the lyrics of the songs are somewhat corny。 Haha

So fun! Great beginning to the sprawling world of Middle Earth。 It's neat to see where Tolkein began on the project that would become his lifelong legacy。 So fun! ¡Maravilloso! Todo es aventura, es un libro muy divertido y siento que ninguna parte sobra。 Tolkien es un genio en la construcción de personajes, diálogos y escenarios。 Me la pasé muy bien leyéndolo。

I think I’d give this a 4。5/5! I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook while reading, I think it made it much easier to follow and really captured the voice of the storyteller that JRR Tolkien has when he writes。 It was such a fun tale and so unique from modern YA fantasy plots and writing。

Andy Serkis is so wonderful (as we already knew)。 My daughter read along while we both listened to the narration on our spring break road trip。 It was her first introduction to Middle Earth, and we’ve both enjoyed the trip immensely。

I truly enjoyed this book。 The story, in particular, was splendid。 But god, it took me 3 months to read it。 There's just something about it that you 。。。 just can't pick it up。 You keep looking at it and know you want to finish it but。。。 you just can't。 I enjoyed it but I'm so happy it's over。 Not sure if I will pick up Tolkien in the foreseeable future。 I truly enjoyed this book。 The story, in particular, was splendid。 But god, it took me 3 months to read it。 There's just something about it that you 。。。 just can't pick it up。 You keep looking at it and know you want to finish it but。。。 you just can't。 I enjoyed it but I'm so happy it's over。 Not sure if I will pick up Tolkien in the foreseeable future。 。。。more

The great adventure! Each chapter in the book was like a mini adventure, each having a new set of problems to face and overcome。 This, added together, forming a great adventure for the enjoyment of children。 This almost felt overwhelming! Like, so much is crammed into a very slender book。 As I pen these words, a rush of tiredness is coming over me like I haven’t slept in ages, and I feel about as weary as Bilbo Baggins felt on his journey home。 Tolkien originally wrote this story for his own chi The great adventure! Each chapter in the book was like a mini adventure, each having a new set of problems to face and overcome。 This, added together, forming a great adventure for the enjoyment of children。 This almost felt overwhelming! Like, so much is crammed into a very slender book。 As I pen these words, a rush of tiredness is coming over me like I haven’t slept in ages, and I feel about as weary as Bilbo Baggins felt on his journey home。 Tolkien originally wrote this story for his own children。 Gleaned from his own experiences, one gets a good sense of what Tolkien felt in World War I during the Battle of Five Armies scene, his arachnophobia during his giant spiders scene (Tolkien was stung by a poisonous spider as a child and had to have his nurse suck out the poison), and his love of Norse Mythology and Legends throughout the book。 However, I felt the battle scene was more or less written by C。 S。 Lewis than Tolkien。 Lewis simply rushes through his battle scenes in Narnia, most likely because they reminded him of his experiences in World War I (who could blame him?), and I felt Tolkien rushed through the Battle of the Five Armies scene by simply knocking the narrator over the head and waking him up at the battle’s end。There were also scenes in the book that felt truly horrifying。 Tolkien, as I have learned, combined the Old Norse word ‘gull’ meaning ‘gold, treasure, precious’ (My precious!) with the Hebrew myth of a golem (a creature without a soul) to create Gollum。 Gollum’s scenes felt almost as if there was a pit deep down in your stomach of superfluous nausea and anxiety, like he were right behind you ready to murder you with a pickaxe to take ‘my precious’ back。Reading Tolkien’s prose, however, was like a magisterial gift straight outta Heaven。 How he could switch into song, to poetry, and back to a grand dramatic narrative with seemingly endless lines and effortless labors, was what ensnared me into this world of hobbits, wizards, orcs, goblins, trolls, dwarves, and elves。 But prose alone did not hold my attention for long and I had to read this book in dozens of short pieces。 I have never had a love of high fantasy or the occult, and this book sadly did not change that position。 Maybe reading LOTR will, but so far, Narnia, Harry Potter, Twilight, and now the Hobbit haven’t。 These opinions are, I know, an unpopular one, but they are needlessly ones I stand by。 Why read this at all if you don’t like high fantasy? I chose to read this book in the first place, simply to get a better awareness of who Tolkien was as a historical figure, and how that came out in his writings。 I’ve read biographies on C。 S。 Lewis and The Inklings and loved them。 Lewis’s writings however were always catch and miss with me。 With that being said, I will it seems forever be enamored with Tolkien’s prose。 His ‘not all who wander are lost’ verses in Fellowship, though excessively quoted, have always been some of my favorite lines in all of poetry。 。。。more
