Summary

The highly anticipated new novel from the worldwide bestselling author of The Clockmaker's Daughter , a spellbinding story that begins with a shocking crime, the effects of which echo across continents and generations。

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959:

At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of a grand country house, a local man makes a terrible discovery。 Police are called, and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most baffling murder investigations in the history of South Australia。

Many years later and thousands of miles away, Jess is a journalist in search of a story。 Having lived and worked in London for nearly two decades, she now finds herself unemployed and struggling to make ends meet。 A phone call summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Nora, who raised Jess when her mother could not, has suffered a fall and is seriously ill in hospital。

At Nora's house, Jess discovers a true-crime book chronicling a long-buried police case: the Turner Family Tragedy of 1959。 It is only when Jess skims through its pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this notorious event - a murder mystery that has never been satisfactorily resolved。

An epic story that spans generations, Homecoming asks what we would do for those we love, how we protect the lies we tell, and what it means to come home。 Above all, it is an intricate and spellbinding novel from one of the finest writers working today。

I used to be an avid Kate Morton fan。 I remember balmy summer days sat reading her long novels on a rug in the garden。 I would devour them pretty quickly so I knew I enjoyed them。Unfortunately I didn't feel the same way about Homecoming。 Maybe my own tastes have changed in the last few years? I feel I've read some many dual timeline novels, with large houses and mysterious characters in them that I feel as though I've read them all。 I felt the story was quite flat and didn't hold my attention。 U I used to be an avid Kate Morton fan。 I remember balmy summer days sat reading her long novels on a rug in the garden。 I would devour them pretty quickly so I knew I enjoyed them。Unfortunately I didn't feel the same way about Homecoming。 Maybe my own tastes have changed in the last few years?

I have enjoyed every book I have read authored by Kate Morton。 This book is set in Australia and the characters are well developed and believable。 It has love interest, murder, mystery, luscious setting, etc。 I have been thinking about this book when not reading and even after I finished reading it, I kept realizing different connections between the characters。 That is the sign of a very good read! Highly recommend this book。

Homecoming by Kate Morton is a book about motherhood and secrets set in Australia with a dual time line。 The book opens in 1959 on Christmas Eve, where a local delivery man makes a shocking discovery on the grounds of a local mansion, a mother and her children are lying dead among the remains of a picnic, apart from the baby who has disappeared, presumably dragged away by wild dogs。 The small town is thrown into a state of shock but the cause of the deaths is never fully established。 Sixty years Homecoming by Kate Morton is a book about motherhood and secrets set in Australia with a dual time line。 The book opens in 1959 on Christmas Eve, where a local delivery man makes a shocking discovery on the grounds of a local mansion, a mother and her children are lying dead among the remains of a picnic, apart from the baby who has disappeared, presumably dragged away by wild dogs。 The small town is thrown into a state of shock but the cause of the deaths is never fully established。 Sixty years later a young journalist named Jess with a familial connection to the tragic event is summoned back to Australia to say goodbye to her ailing grandmother, the woman who raised her。 Unaware of the family history she is perturbed by some of the delirious statements made by her grandmother, and soon she is knee deep into an investigation of the unsolved murders that will open more than one can of worms。 This is a slow burning mystery that entices the reader , dropping hints and clues along the way。 While I had figured out the main "twist" early on, as it is pretty obvious, there were still one or two surprises along the way that I did not see coming。 I really liked the use of three generations of family to tell the story as it showed the long lasting repercussions of decisions made while in a state of shock and grief。 The characters were believable, they all had shades of grey, some darker than others, which made them interesting to read about。 While the slow pacing may not be to everyone's taste, it does allow the reader to build up anticipation and really immerse themselves in another time and place。I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own。 。。。more

I very much enjoyed this book。 The mystery was compelling and I had no idea who had committed the crime until it was revealed, although the way the protagonist figured it out was a little too convenient。 I would have much preferred one of the characters reveal what he knew posthumously。 The timing was a bit off too。 The book mentioned a DNA test done in 1978 when they didn't even exist until 1985。 What I wish had been explored more fully, though, was the behavior of the family matriarch。 The fir I very much enjoyed this book。 The mystery was compelling and I had no idea who had committed the crime until it was revealed, although the way the protagonist figured it out was a little too convenient。 I would have much preferred one of the characters reveal what he knew posthumously。 The timing was a bit off too。 The book mentioned a DNA test done in 1978 when they didn't even exist until 1985。 What I wish had been explored more fully, though, was the behavior of the family matriarch。 The first part of the books makes her out to be a caring and nurturing grandmother, but as the book goes on, we learn that she is actually quite vicious。 She gaslights, she twists words and experiences to suit her, she's controlling。 I wanted the relationship between Polly and Jess to explore the truths about how Nora shaped their estrangement。 Overall, a solid four stars。 Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC。 。。。more
