Summary

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life。 She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am。

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions。 Everything in Libby’s life is about to change。 But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them。

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying。 When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom。 Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note。 And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone。

The can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets。

4。5 stars, but I rounded up! Super creepy, but a good kind of creepy。 Good twists, right up til the last page! I really liked how this was written and bounced around between characters and time periods… which kept me wanting to read more。 My only complaint is that two characters’ names were too similar and that was confusing to me。 I’m definitely going to read the sequel to this one!

After completion of this book, I thought the title of this book was "off。" Perhaps a better title would have been "The Baby Left Behind," as that is really the center of the story。 I did find this interesting and do find Lisa Jewell to be an excellent writer (so far。。。first book)。 There are definitely twists to this story, so pay attention! Creepy, culty family drama。 Quick read!

I liked the book- kept me intrigued。 but there was way too much detail fluff- I wound up skipping over much of the fluff to finish…especially at end。

This book did keep me guessing and had some twists and turns。

I really, really enjoyed this book。 It was one I couldn’t put down after only a few chapters in。 So many twists and turns, as well as just the right amount of psychological disturbance made it a fascinating read。 I’m excited to read the second book and I hope it lives up to this one!

This was not my favorite book。 I had a hard time keeping track of the different characters who were telling the story。 Libby has inherited a large house that comes with a mystery。 3 adults were found dead in a possible suicide pact。 The older children have disappeared and only a 10 month old baby is left behind。 She (Libby) is adopted and inherits the house。 The book follows the lives of the people who lived in the house so in those chapters you move back in time。 Then the Libby chapters are try This was not my favorite book。 I had a hard time keeping track of the different characters who were telling the story。 Libby has inherited a large house that comes with a mystery。 3 adults were found dead in a possible suicide pact。 The older children have disappeared and only a 10 month old baby is left behind。 She (Libby) is adopted and inherits the house。 The book follows the lives of the people who lived in the house so in those chapters you move back in time。 Then the Libby chapters are trying to figure out where the older children went and if someone is sneaking back to the mansion。 The other character, Lucy, is telling her story in the same timeframe as Libby, but it's not clear for quite a while who Lucy is。 。。。more

SO GOOD。 Content warning (rape, murder, cults, abuse, etc)。 Definitely recommend! The storyline kept me guessing and I love how layered the characters are。 Cannot wait to read the next one!

draggedIt dragged for me then got good the last 25%; then was muddy。 Never explains the transformation of characters。 A title disappointing。

Read this book after the sequel by accident。 I liked filling in the back story but the suspense was spoiled by the fact that I knew how everything would unwind。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I liked this book。 It was weird and twisty, but also there was a plausible story line that gave it verisimilitude despite the oddness of it all。 The ending was cool。I would have given this a higher rating, but it was hard to know any of the characters in depth, and I didn’t really feel empathy for any one in particular as a result。 The part with Henry and Phin was eerie and interesting。 I was a bit confused as to how Phin found “the baby” with that offer to go to Africa, and how no one found the I liked this book。 It was weird and twisty, but also there was a plausible story line that gave it verisimilitude despite the oddness of it all。 The ending was cool。I would have given this a higher rating, but it was hard to know any of the characters in depth, and I didn’t really feel empathy for any one in particular as a result。 The part with Henry and Phin was eerie and interesting。 I was a bit confused as to how Phin found “the baby” with that offer to go to Africa, and how no one found the skull of Birdie prior to Henry getting rid of it。 I’m also a little confused as to what exactly Henry did or did not do regarding the bugging of phones and drugging/ locking up of the main characters, but perhaps that is what speaks to the fact that he was an unreliable narrator after all。 I’m both annoyed by that ambiguity and kind of entranced by it as well。 Trippy little story, but not outrageous。 3。5 for sure。 。。。more

Creepy…a story full of secrets, captivity, abuse, murder, and escape。 The Family Upstairs is one of a domineering, egotistical and psychopathic man。 David makes rules that are nearly unattainable, but are unbreakable。 He keeps his ‘family’ locked away from the outside world until one of them snaps。 ‘The Family’ scatters to the winds, but when ‘the Baby’ turns 25, they all come crawling back with trepidation, fear, and ready to spill secrets。 Oh-so-good…and creepy!

I loved the mystery and the unsolved questions remaining at the end of the book!NOTE: I quickly read the second book, The Family Remains。 Although I did get all my questions answered, which was satisfying, I felt the story could have been more interesting。

After reading another book by Lisa Jewell and loving it, I wanted to see what else I could read of hers。 This one was downright confusing to me at first, with all the different POVs and time changes。 Because of this, it was hard to get into, but I kept with it because there were aspects of the story that kept me interested。 Ultimately, this one was just really different than I thought it would be。 I expected more things to happen in the house once she inherited it, but that wasn't the story at a After reading another book by Lisa Jewell and loving it, I wanted to see what else I could read of hers。 This one was downright confusing to me at first, with all the different POVs and time changes。 Because of this, it was hard to get into, but I kept with it because there were aspects of the story that kept me interested。 Ultimately, this one was just really different than I thought it would be。 I expected more things to happen in the house once she inherited it, but that wasn't the story at all。 It wasn't as satisfying as the last book I read by this author。 。。。more

I LOVE Lisa Jewell’s writing and she is probably up there with one of my favourite authors of all time… but this one just didn’t hit the mark。 I wanted so much more from it。 I wanted it to be thrilling, but it just wasn’t。 Throughout the the whole book, it felt like I was waiting for something to happen。 And things did happen, lots of random things… but nothing came together for me in the end。 I feel that some situations that needed tying up at the end, were briefly brushed over and rushed (i。e。 I LOVE Lisa Jewell’s writing and she is probably up there with one of my favourite authors of all time… but this one just didn’t hit the mark。 I wanted so much more from it。 I wanted it to be thrilling, but it just wasn’t。 Throughout the the whole book, it felt like I was waiting for something to happen。 And things did happen, lots of random things… but nothing came together for me in the end。 I feel that some situations that needed tying up at the end, were briefly brushed over and rushed (i。e。 the Michael storyline)。 There were also too many characters in my opinion, some of them essentially meaningless (i。e。 Giuseppe & Dido)。Overall, well written with great potential, but just a really MEH, strange plot。 。。。more

Great family thriller book by Lisa Jewel。Libby was abandoned in her family home as a baby。 When she turns 25, she inherits her family’s house。 She soon starts to research who her family was and learns dark secrets and eventually discovers who her birth mom and dad were。 This book flips from past to present and shares multiple characters point of view。The Family Upstairs is a page turner。 I highly recommend it。

This book unnerved me completely- which was surely the intention! I have a feeling I’ll be reading The Family Remains before long。It’s not every day you met a character like Henry - I just don’t know how I feel about him…

This book was wonderfully written。 It had a fantastic pace and so many twists and turns。 I am excited to read the second one。

I kept seeing this book and then finally read it! Thank god I did because wow! The way Jewell balances three stories happening side by side is great and they all tie into each other so well。 The way she writes history that lives in this house and how mysteries unravel is unparalleled。 If I could give this higher than a 5 I absolutely would, because this book had me hooked (and now I'm a Jewell fan and will be reading all her books)! Truly a psychological thriller in a modest way。 I love the story Lisa Jewell weaves and the nice little neat way it all comes together。
