Summary

In this poignant, hilarious and deeply intimate call to arms, Hollywood's most powerful woman, the mega-talented creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder and Catch, reveals how saying YES changed her life - and how it can change yours too。 With three hit shows on television and three children at home, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say no when invitations arrived。 Hollywood party? No。 Speaking engagement? No。 Media appearances? No。 And to an introvert like Shonda, who describes herself as 'hugging the walls' at social events and experiencing panic attacks before press interviews, there was a particular benefit to saying no: nothing new to fear。 Then came Thanksgiving 2013, when Shonda's sister Delorse muttered six little words at her: You never say yes to anything。 Profound, impassioned and laugh-out-loud funny, in Year of Yes Shonda Rhimes reveals how saying YES changed - and saved - her life。 And inspires readers everywhere to change their own lives with one little word: Yes。

What a great read! I love shows created by Shonda Rhimes, and this book was an excellent opportunity to learn more about her life。

I LOVED this book! I mean, if you have ever seen and fallen in love with any of Shonda Rhimes shows (for me it was Greys and private practice) this book makes so much sense of where it all comes from。 She is funny, she has wisdom, she is REAL。 Being able to relate to so much of this book and then learn from the rest was a treat。 I highly recommend!

3。75 stars。 I really enjoyed this read。 I think I was expecting more self-help but happy that it was more memoir。 Super motivating and positive。 You can definitely tell she created Grey's Anatomy because her style is throughout this book as well, repeating short, poignant sentences。 I loved her speeches that she added in their entirety in this book 。 She's funny, really funny! And so real。 I can imagine going to brunch with her and just spending the afternoon gabbing away。 She has great insights 3。75 stars。 I really enjoyed this read。 I think I was expecting more self-help but happy that it was more memoir。 Super motivating and positive。 You can definitely tell she created Grey's Anatomy because her style is throughout this book as well, repeating short, poignant sentences。 I loved her speeches that she added in their entirety in this book 。 She's funny, really funny! This book is fantastic! Though whomever designed this cover should be fired。。。so many times I passed this book up because it didn’t look that great。 Glad I finally took the plunge!

Completely agree inspiring m。 Shonda pulled the curtain back so elegantly I couldn’t put it down。 The audio version with clips from actual speeches was amazing。

I wanted to be critical about this book。 Mostly because I read a *lot* of celebrity memoirs and nonfiction pieces, both for pleasure and in my job as an editor。 But also because Shonda Rhimes is, obviously, amazing, and I wanted to be able to engage with her work in a thoughtful rather than fangirl way。 And last because I've had a slew of five-star reads recently and it's starting to feel false。 They can't ALL be five-star reads, can they?Well, this one definitely is。 It stands out among other t I wanted to be critical about this book。 Mostly because I read a *lot* of celebrity memoirs and nonfiction pieces, both for pleasure and in my job as an editor。 But also because Shonda Rhimes is, obviously, amazing, and I wanted to be able to engage with her work in a thoughtful rather than fangirl way。 And last because I've had a slew of five-star reads recently and it's starting to feel false。 They can't ALL be five-star reads, can they?Well, this one definitely is。 It stands out among other titles in this genre。 Oh, and also it made me fangirl super hard。For the uninitiated (trying not to judge here) Shonda Rhimes is the glass-ceiling-smashing American producer behind shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and most recently, Bridgerton, as well as many fan-favorite movies。 Her production studio, Shondaland, has a $150 million deal with Netflix。 Basically, she's a big deal, but you don't usually see her on-screen, so there's a chance that you wouldn't recognize her。In her book Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes not only reveals fascinating things about herself that I would never have guessed (like her struggles with social anxiety, dislike of publicity and interviews, and years of conflict avoidance due to deep-seated introversion) but also takes her "year of yes" concept in a direction I never would have expected。 Rather than simply regaling readers with the various adventures and misadventures she had throughout a year of saying yes to new things (what I expected), she broke her book into chapters based on the different kinds of yeses she learned to embrace over what became a longer-than-a-year journey of self-discovery。Some of her most impactful yeses for me were saying yes to health—instead of continuing to say yes to obesity—saying yesses that felt like living, which often meant compromising with someone to reach a true yes, and saying yes to saying no。 Each of these lessons is shrouded in deep kindness, empathy, and understanding。 Shonda Rhimes is not here to tell anyone how to live their lives—who to love, what to look like, what not to eat, how to parent。 Instead, she acts as the benevolent narrator of her own life, sharing what she learned wasn't working for her, what worked for her instead, and most importantly, why。 The psychology behind all of her decisions, though not explained clinically, is what will linger with me。 Some of her refrains—"What to play?"—have already influenced my day-to-day decision-making。 Plus she shares a lot of cool things about the film and television industry, and if you are any kind of a media connoisseur, I could recommend this book for that component alone。I can't believe I slept on this book as long as I did。 Don't make that mistake。 Let reading this book be your first in a long list of life-changing yeses。 。。。more

Revealing, honest, raw, and SO inspiring! Not only learned more about Shonda and her personal life but also, gained wisdom about life, people, challenges in general。 Recommend everyone to read this - you might relate to a situation Shonda was in or surprise yourself as you self reflect。 She is a natural storyteller and this was just as fun/addicting to read as her tv series are to watch!

So good。 Reads like the dialogue in Grey’s or Scandal。 Fast paced, sharp, witty, and insightful。 Embrace a Year of Yes! It’ll do you good。

I was drawn to this book as a big fan of Shonda’s tv shows; Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to get away with murder。 I had hoped to walk away more enlightened with wisdom and courage however, it felt like there was an underlying yet very strong bragging tone to the book which made it difficult to form a connection。 While I applaud Shonda’s accomplishment as the most successful tv writer, I was not a big fan of Shonda’s writing style in this book。 None the less the Year of Yes was still an intere I was drawn to this book as a big fan of Shonda’s tv shows; Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to get away with murder。 I had hoped to walk away more enlightened with wisdom and courage however, it felt like there was an underlying yet very strong bragging tone to the book which made it difficult to form a connection。 While I applaud Shonda’s accomplishment as the most successful tv writer, I was not a big fan of Shonda’s writing style in this book。 None the less the Year of Yes was still an interesting enough read。 It is nice to get an invitation into the mind of a strong successful and black woman。 I would recommend。 。。。more

It was refreshing to see that someone who is rich, famous, and creates these strong tv characters to reveal her true self。 People need to realize that everyone is just as normal as you & I。 It was an easy & fun read that was not too long。 I may read it again just to recall some of the advice given。

Memoir and self-help book in one。 I like that Shonda breaks the myth of "doing it all" and the immense pressure of that illusion, especially for women。 I love that she called out those who perpetuate that myth (don't hide your nannies)。 Indeed, it takes a village, and Shonda emphasized the importance of who you allow into that village of yours。 Though sometimes I found it hard to relate to the glitz and glam of a Hollywood multimillionaire, Shonda still inspired me to own my power, not give in t Memoir and self-help book in one。 I like that Shonda breaks the myth of "doing it all" and the immense pressure of that illusion, especially for women。 I love that she called out those who perpetuate that myth (don't hide your nannies)。 Indeed, it takes a village, and Shonda emphasized the importance of who you allow into that village of yours。 Though sometimes I found it hard to relate to the glitz and glam of a Hollywood multimillionaire, Shonda still inspired me to own my power, not give in to the tendency to belittle my greatness, and claim my space in the universe。 。。。more

Shonda's TedTalk brought me here。 I was surprised to see that so much of what was written here showed up in that TedTalk。 Nevertheless, this was insightful and inspiring。I adore Shondra and all she does creatively and societally。 She constantly inspires me。“I am not lucky。 You know what I am? I’ve never watched any of Shonda’s earlier works like Grey’s or Scandal so I went into this book relatively clueless to who she was and what her life was like。 I found the Year of Yes to be quite enjoyable once I got a few chapters in。 The author is quite funny and her charisma and wit was the best part of both the writing and the narration of the audiobook。 This read was about so much more than committing to saying Yes to things for a year。 It was about growth, discovering yourself, facing your I’ve never watched any of Shonda’s earlier works like Grey’s or Scandal so I went into this book relatively clueless to who she was and what her life was like。 I found the Year of Yes to be quite enjoyable once I got a few chapters in。 The author is quite funny and her charisma and wit was the best part of both the writing and the narration of the audiobook。 This read was about so much more than committing to saying Yes to things for a year。 It was about growth, discovering yourself, facing your fears and getting out of your comfort zone。 I really enjoyed this book and I’m glad I gave it a chance! 。。。more

With contagious confidence and a quick humor, Rhimes shares the scary, crazy, life-changing experiences of a year where she learned to say yes。。。 and say now (aka boundaries!)I found this book both inspiring and fun to read。 I highly recommend it for providing a laugh while opening up some big questions worth a bit of introspective。
