Summary

Executive fellow at Harvard Business School, Guest Shark on Shark Tank , and famed angel investor Matt Higgins reveals the counterintuitive formula for a life of perpetual growth that has been practiced for thousands of years by military leaders and serial entrepreneurs alike--forget the Plan B and burn the boats。

From Sun Tzu to Julius Caesar, the ancient Israelites to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, there's a bold and highly effective tactic seen throughout history--when leaders want to motivate their troops for success, they destroy all opportunities for retreat, and go all-in on the mission。 They burn their boats; it's win or perish, and the clarity of sheer desperation propels them to victory。

Serial entrepreneur, brilliant investor, and television personality Matt Higgins makes the case that burning the boats isn't just advantageous in times of war or crisis, but a strategy we can all use to achieve our greatest dreams。 Conquerors don't have a Plan B, knowing intuitively what science bears out: the mere contemplation of a Plan B weakens our resolve and diminishes our chances for breakout success。

In Burn the Boats, Higgins draws from experiences in his own rags-to-riches life to show you how it's done。 The lessons he's learned along the way, and witnessed in the leaders around him, are now for the first time distilled down to a template for success that's available to everyone bold enough to use it。 Each chapter includes clear, actionable advice that readers can immediately start applying to their own lives, along with inspiration drawn from dozens of real-life success stories, adding up to a blueprint for a future filled with victories。

With BURN THE BOATS, Matt Higgins describes an approach to life that is terrifying and incredibly rewarding, simply one where you go all in on whatever your endeavor and do not have a fallback, a safety net, nothing but the knowing you have to figure it out, head straight for the goal, and keep going no matter what。 I loved the writing style, the stories of the ones who have taken this approach to their goals and made their dreams come true。 Higgins writes with deep honesty, profound vulnerabili With BURN THE BOATS, Matt Higgins describes an approach to life that is terrifying and incredibly rewarding, simply one where you go all in on whatever your endeavor and do not have a fallback, a safety net, nothing but the knowing you have to figure it out, head straight for the goal, and keep going no matter what。 I loved the writing style, the stories of the ones who have taken this approach to their goals and made their dreams come true。 Higgins writes with deep honesty, profound vulnerability, and compassion -- making this the ultimate business of life book。 。。。more

I couldn't finish it。 It's all over the place going a mile wide and an inch deep on way too many people's stories。 "Facts" are cherry picked to loosely support his thesis。 Many of the stories offered have little or nothing to do with the point he is trying to make other than the fact that the person he is talking about is successful。 The entire book is a case study in hindsight bias。 At the time of my rating, this book has mostly five star reviews, but they all appear to be from people who were I couldn't finish it。 It's all over the place going a mile wide and an inch deep on way too many people's stories。 "Facts" are cherry picked to loosely support his thesis。 Many of the stories offered have little or nothing to do with the point he is trying to make other than the fact that the person he is talking about is successful。 The entire book is a case study in hindsight bias。 At the time of my rating, this book has mostly five star reviews, but they all appear to be from people who were given advanced copies and asked to leave them。 。。。more

Burn the Boats by Matt Higgins is an amazing book! Though its main focus is on business I think the ideas and suggestions in it can apply to many areas in life。 The main idea being that when we create a plan B, we create a plan to fail, when instead what we need to do is to put all of our focus and commitment on plan A, which is what we actually want to happen。 Because if you allow for the plan B escape route, it tends to prevent you from taking all the actions you would have had it not been the Burn the Boats by Matt Higgins is an amazing book! AIN'T GONNA BE NO REMATCH!I first learned of Matt Higgins while watching one of my favorite shows, Shark Tank。 I remember him winning a bidding war with Mark Cuban and thinking, wow, that took guts。 But what was really behind that was heart。 I also remember him being so kind to the guests。 Especially those kids with the cutting board… what a story。 Further research showed Mr。 Higgins owned or co-owned some of our favorite brands, Magnolia Bakery, VaynerX, Momofuku, Bluestone Lane (best coffee!) Heart。So, when I saw on social media Matt had written a book, I knew what I had to do。With my copy proudly in hand and having read it already (in one sitting), here are my thoughts:THIS BOOK IS LIFE-CHANGING。 Plain and simple。What struck me most is that Matt’s public persona isn’t just an act—he’s the real deal。 The same generosity seen on Shark Tank, IG, Twitter, etc。, are true IRL。 He shares his story and his wisdom wholeheartedly。I loved the book because aside from having case studies (about 50 of them) to support the thesis, it has a narrative quality that makes for a great read。 So many business books read like instruction manuals, with mundane checklists dictating “the steps we need to take for success。” One size fits all。This book is not that。It’s different in so many ways that it’s difficult to categorize。 And maybe I shouldn’t try。 But if I had to say: it’s the love child of an inspirational, uplifting entreprenurial book with a powerful nonfiction narrative detailing a life of fierce struggle and overcoming adversity against all odds。It’s about leveling up and following your dreams。Burn the Boats has changed my perception and the way I will now approach things—both personally and professionally。 I’ve been struggling lately with a decision that will have a profound effect on my life。 I’m finally ready and I know it will be amazing。 My new-found confidence is one of the many gifts this book will give you, too。It’s approachable and honest。 It’s vulnerable and powerful。 Guts & heart in equal measure。 I imagine it took a lot of guts for some of the founders/companies to share their stories。 And it definitely took bravery for the author to share his personal story。 It’s a doozy!Did I mention I cried while reading? Yeah, I don’t see your run-of-the-mill biz book having that effect on you。And that’s because this book IS different。 It’s unique。 It will meet you where you’re at and at the perfect moment。 It’s the guide you didn’t know you needed。 It gives you the tools and vocabulary to live your dreams。I get the sense that reading this book is like being able to sit down with the author (over Bluestone coffe!) and drawing a roadmap on how to take the leap。 Whatever that looks like for you。But be prepared to do the work and really go for it。 Burning the Boats only works if you truly eliminate ‘Plan B’。 Heck, it even has a quote from Arnold Schwarzenegger himself on the back cover! And if it’s good enough for The Terminator, it’s good enough for me。The book talks a lot on how to view risk and how it factors into your decision making。 You can contemplate risk (you have to), synthesize it, then go for it nonetheless。 But that type of bravery takes introspection—which can be painful but vital to make big changes。Fortune favors the…All in all, I consider this to be an extremely important book。 It's a keeper。 One of the reasons we keep buying self-help or entrepreneurship books is because they don’t stick。 It’s that same formula over and over。 This one is here to stay and will have a permanent home on my desk。 One book to rule them all。I can honestly say I’m ready to do my best work and become the best version of myself。This book is for dreamers, for doers, for the brave and the bold。 But if you’re doubtful, confused, scared, or lost, this book is also for you。I truly hope it can affect you as it has me。 I hope it becomes a movement and changes as many lives as possible。There is so much good in this book and so much to be done with it。 There’s enough heart to go around for all of us to share。 Scaling Heart… that’s a good book title BTW。It’s time to force ourselves to grow, change, and innovate。 We need to inspire ourselves and those around us by declaring that failure is not an option—no ‘Plan B’, no looking to the past。 We move forward, brave, bold, curious。So, what are you waiting for? Time to light the match。 Time to change your life。 I know it might be scary (it was for me for many years), but I promise that with this book as your guide, a beautiful future awaits you。BURN THE BOATS。。。 AIN'T GONNA BE NO REMATCH! 。。。more

So。。。 I'm not an afficionado of business-advice books。 It's not because I'm not curious about the topic。 I'm always in a relentless pursuit for answers and guidance。 It's because most books in this genre are a hackneyed redux of the same moth-worn advice, packaged up in an unappealing, unrelatable voice of bluster。 In one ear and out the other for me, usually resulting in a fast forward flip to the summation at the chapter's end to reap any useful nuggets。This book is different。 And it's because So。。。 I'm not an afficionado of business-advice books。 It's not because I'm not curious about the topic。 I'm always in a relentless pursuit for answers and guidance。 It's because most books in this genre are a hackneyed redux of the same moth-worn advice, packaged up in an unappealing, unrelatable voice of bluster。 In one ear and out the other for me, usually resulting in a fast forward flip to the summation at the chapter's end to reap any useful nuggets。This book is different。 And it's because the author is different。 The story - and its protagonist - are all-engrossing。 He stealthily cloaks important advice in riveting anecdotal case studies and personal examples。 Before I knew it I read three-quarters of the book on my iPhone - and I have middle-aged eyesight。 It's not easy to write a novel advice book - let alone a book that provides a pragmatic hand up for those facing even the most hardscrabble of circumstances。Matt Higgins does this in the voice of the smartest best friend I've never had。 When I cracked open this book, I wasn't quite sure what advice I'd walk away with。 I'm a skeptic by nature, even with someone as smart as the author。 Yet I didn't think my world would turn on its axis after reading Burn the Boats。 But, in fact, it shifted。 This book helped me to think differently about persistent issues that resurface perpetually in business and in life。 Issues that have power because I have difficulty articulating them - let alone addressing and overcoming them。 He distills it down in a very clear way - yet always in a way that respects the intelligence of his audience。 That's a gift you rarely find in this genre 。。。more

Hi everyone, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review。 I'm Matt, the author of Burn the Boats。 You may have seen me as a shark on Shark Tank or heard about my lectures at Harvard Business School。 But nothing I've done matters to me as much as this book, the most important project of my life。 It took me three years to write it and 48 years to live it。 Some background on the origin of the phrase, burn the boats。 First of all, the concept dates back to the beginning of recorded histo Hi everyone, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review。 I'm Matt, the author of Burn the Boats。 You may have seen me as a shark on Shark Tank or heard about my lectures at Harvard Business School。 But nothing I've done matters to me as much as this book, the most important project of my life。 It took me three years to write it and 48 years to live it。 Some background on the origin of the phrase, burn the boats。 First of all, the concept dates back to the beginning of recorded history, embraced by the ancient Israelites, Caesar, Sun Tzu and countless others。 When outnumbered 10 to 1 and facing near certain death, the best military leaders intuitively understand that humans actually perform better with no safety net and no option for retreat。“When your army has crossed the border, you should burn your boats and bridges, in order to make it clear to everybody that you have no hankering after home。” - Sun Tzu, Art of WarFollowing in Tzu's footsteps, President Zelensky proved himself a master of both history and psychology when President Biden offered him an escape from advancing Russian troops, and he replied, "I don't need a ride。 I need weapons!" I decided to resurrect this ancient concept and apply it to the pursuit of excellence in peacetime。 Now if you’re anything like me, at times your intuition has said you're due for that promotion, or a job change, or to launch the new business stirring butterflies in your stomach at 2am。 Yet when standing on the precipice of going all in, something - or someone - holds you back, telling you that it’s not safe, or just isn’t the right time。 Or maybe it’s that insidious voice in your head that whispers: you’re just not good enough。 So three years ago, I set out to answer a very simple question: What does it take to fully commit to our own potential, to toss Plan B overboard and Burn the Boats once and for all?I wrote Burn the Boats to be actionable: – Why research proves that the mere contemplation of Plan B statistically reduces the probability Plan A will ever materialize– How to retrain your brain to become your greatest ally– Why you don’t need a revolutionary invention to launch a breakthrough business– How to overcome the internal and external forces that impede risk taking so you can confidently pursue radical change – The 5 types of corporate saboteurs who are standing in the way of your ambition (from the Withholders to the Office Gaslighters)I've never been to war but my life has often felt like one。 One burn-the-boats move to drop out of high school at 16 and start college early with a GED, get a better paying job and help take care of my ailing mother gave me no choice but victory。 It took me 11 grueling years to finish college and law school at night while working two jobs, but by the time I was 26, I had become the youngest press secretary in NYC history。 Conventional wisdom would have predicted I would never lose the stigma of being a high school dropout, but I trusted my raw instincts and chose the path I knew was right for meI’m grateful to the 50 different founders, athletes, artists, and celebrities I interviewed for Burn the Boats, from Gary Vaynerchuk to Scarlett Johansson, all of whom share their own journey to finally pursue Plan A。 Lastly, since I advise everyone else to shed their shame, I share many painful details of my own life - growing up hungry, dropping out of high school, surviving testicular cancer, divorce, and of course, my mother's health struggles。 Starting with Linda Joy Higgins, a long line of strong women have had a profound impact on my life。 It was an honor to celebrate many incredible stories of female leadership in Burn the Boats and at the same time, pay tribute to my librarian mother, who died on the very morning I became Press Secretary。 While I wish she would have lived to read this book, it only exists because of the love of words she instilled in me。 I can't wait to hear what you think!Matt 。。。more
