In October 1989, triplet babies are born into chaos in a Swedish hospital。 Over two decades later, the siblings are scattered around the world, barely speaking。 Sebastian is in London working for a mysterious scientific organisation and falling in love。 Clara has travelled to Easter Island to join a doomsday cult。 And the third triplet, Matilda, is in Sweden, practising being a stepmother。 Then something happens that forces them to reunite。 Their mother calls with worrying news: their father has gone missing and she has something to tell them, a twenty-five-year secret that will change all their lives …

This book has an intriguing title, but it is overwritten and the characters are overly quirky。 Everything is a little too much。

An interesting premise, but ultimately it did not come together for me。

Memory, the present, the imagined future。 Family, blood and inherited and created… This glorious book asks so many questions, poses so many possibilities, and reminds us of very simple, elemental things we can forget in the mess of living: that we are here only for a short while; that we are not alone; that the world is mysterious and glorious and strange but also based on patterns and systems; that we don’t need to understand to accept and to find the beauty in just existing alongside each othe Memory, the present, the imagined future。 Family, blood and inherited and created… This glorious book asks so many questions, poses so many possibilities, and reminds us of very simple, elemental things we can forget in the mess of living: that we are here only for a short while; that we are not alone; that the world is mysterious and glorious and strange but also based on patterns and systems; that we don’t need to understand to accept and to find the beauty in just existing alongside each other。 The English translation by Nichola Smalley is wonderful and whimsical。 I thoroughly recommend this immersive read, especially if you need some escapism。 。。。more

Fans of neuroscience, psychology, sociology and complicated family dynamics will love this! Each character and their arc is so well fleshed out, so beautifully unique it could have been written by the characters themselves。 That’s to say, the tone and language felt fluid and merged with the characters chapter by chapter。 Whilst I lost the plot towards the end and guessed the ‘twist’ (although I don’t think the intention here was to surprise anyone) I thoroughly enjoyed the humour, the melody of Fans of neuroscience, psychology, sociology and complicated family dynamics will love this!

4。5 stars rounded up but I have read so few really good books this year it gets the full five。 Great characters and an interesting, rather surreal plot centred around family ties, chaos and (often mental) disorder。 Perhaps a little longer than needed but it was fun to spend time in this world and there are lots of moments of humour, both dark and light。

I just cannot slog my way through this one。I'm a bit past half way and nothing has really happened yet。 So far the book consists of wonderfully crafted sentences recounting the interior and exterior pseudophilosophical conversations of all of the characters。 All of them being characters I don't especially like doesn't help。I'd love to find out what the big mystery is, but just can't take any more from a writer who obviously values words more than the story they are supposed to be telling。 I just cannot slog my way through this one。I'm a bit past half way and nothing has really happened yet。 So far the book consists of wonderfully crafted sentences recounting the interior and exterior pseudophilosophical conversations of all of the characters。 All of them being characters I don't especially like doesn't help。I'd love to find out what the big mystery is, but just can't take any more from a writer who obviously values words more than the story they are supposed to be telling。 。。。more

A very long read about family, a family of triplets, living in Sweden, England, Germany and Easter Island, neuroscience, anorexia, mental health, synethesia, suicide, infidelity, art, climate change, doomsday cult, Jaffa cakes, a monkey and a puzzle。 At times it was hard to know what was going on and where this story was going but it all comes together in the end - it’s surreal, dark, madcap and perhaps just reflective of modern life。 I almost gave up 2/3 in but glad I kept going。

Well, this was a first, I've never read anything set on Easter Island before!A System so Magnificent it is Blinding is a chunkster of a novel by Swedish author Amanda Svensson。  It's a family saga of sorts, tracing the lives of triplets Sebastian, Clara and Matilda Isaksson as they come to terms with The Family Secret, revealed to them by their mother in the wake of their father's disappearance。  The novel begins with a sparkling introduction to Sebastian, who is a somewhat stolid young man work Well, this was a first, I've never read anything set on Easter Island before!A System so Magnificent it is Blinding is a chunkster of a novel by Swedish author Amanda Svensson。  It's a family saga of sorts, tracing the lives of triplets Sebastian, Clara and Matilda Isaksson as they come to terms with The Family Secret, revealed to them by their mother in the wake of their father's disappearance。  The novel begins with a sparkling introduction to Sebastian, who is a somewhat stolid young man working in a research institute in London — where he (like everyone else) has no idea about what they are actually researching。  Sebastian's defining characteristic is Not Getting Involved, so he ignores all the communications he receives from his mother and his siblings, and fends off attention from females including Jennifer Travis who might, or might not, fancy him。  It's hard to tell, especially because this first part of the novel is often so amusing。 He does eventually succumb to one of his research subjects, but I shall say no more about that。。。The next part takes a much darker tone。  It brings us to Clara, a journalist who's just lost her job and under the misapprehension that a story about Easter Island might launch her freelance career, has travelled there。Here I must insert the baggage that I brought to this part of the story。  My knowledge of Easter Island is confined to a mental image of its monumental statues called moai, and — from my reading of Jared Diamond's bestseller Collapse (2005) — my understanding of the environmental lesson that derives from their existence。 The moai, created by the inhabitants of Easter Island during the 13th–16th centuries, were included by Diamond as an example of a society which willfully chose to ignore the signs of impending doom and went on destroying their environment in order to build their statues so that eventually they destroyed their society altogether。 Diamond's theory is contested, but that hasn't altered my mental image of Easter Island  — I imagine it as a bleak landscape dotted about with a lot of statues。 Easter Island statues (Wikipedia)If Svensson's story is to be believed, the bleak landscape part is correct, but now Easter Island is a tourist destination, with campsites, hotels good and bad, and some beautiful beaches。 It's the setting for Svensson's characters to pursue their part in the intricacies of the plot, which gets messier by the page。 Nevertheless, for me, Svensson's light-hearted humour was not enough to dispel the sense of existential doom that troubles us all。  The planet is in a terrible state, and Easter Island is a portent of what might lie ahead。  Tourism there, with all the carbon emissions that such tourism entails (unless it's offset, which is what I do when I fly), is a reminder that people like the character Clara who purport to care, won't forego making unnecessary flights around the planet。 (She flies there twice in the course of the novel。)  I read Collapse all those years ago so that I would be an informed citizen, much good it did me。  I found myself reading this part of Svensson's novel feeling as her characters do: depressed and hopeless。Ok, off my soapbox。。。To read the rest of my review please visit https://anzlitlovers。com/2022/09/06/a。。。 。。。more

。。。more

How I read this: Free ebook copy received through EdelweissThis book was quite hard to get into, and I'm not sure what to make of it。 In the end, a plot did exist, even if convoluted, and it did manage to draw me in, but at the same time, the book felt like a chore and I wished I could just find out what happens without slogging through the weird stuff that's in it for days on end。It's all about grief, loss and anxiety and human relationships, but it's also just, I don't know, pretty pretentious How I read this: Free ebook copy received through EdelweissThis book was quite hard to get into, and I'm not sure what to make of it。 In the end, a plot did exist, even if convoluted, and it did manage to draw me in, but at the same time, the book felt like a chore and I wished I could just find out what happens without slogging through the weird stuff that's in it for days on end。It's all about grief, loss and anxiety and human relationships, but it's also just, I don't know, pretty pretentious。 Like that super modernist play that everyone goes to just because of appearances, but only 3 people actually understand。 A lot of the characters suffered from mental health issues as well, but I felt like the matters weren't treated with quite enough sensitivity。Most of the characters are quite odd, aloof, and very hard to reconcile with images of real people。 I couldn't figure out whether the author was trying to use magical realism or was that just what I'd call pretentiousness, because a lot of the characters were having some really odd problems with their lives。 Everyone was complicated just for the sake of it, self-centered and so neck deep in their own significance, it got too much。 I feel like maybe I could have vibed with this book in my early twenties when life felt like everything was about me and my problems, but now that I'm in my mid-thirties。。。 I don't know。 Not all things have to be this complicated。It worthy to note that the book has A LOT of triggers too。 Not sure I'll even list them all, but suicide, abortion/miscarriage, eating disorders - those are the few of the big ones。 Family trouble, some addition trouble are less prominently mentioned, but still there。 I'm sure I'm forgetting something。 The book is not an easy read。If this wasn't a review copy, I probably would have stopped reading。 Hopefully, maybe this book is simply not for me and others will have liked it better。 It wasn't badly written - it's just that the amount of weirdness in it is quite high, and it's not coupled with meaning I could find behind it all。 If there's meaning, I can usually deal with the weirdness (and in certain cases, appreciate it all the more, even)。 But this was not the case。I thank the publisher for giving me a free copy of the ebook in exchange to my honest review。 This has not affected my opinion。Book Blog | Bookstagram | Bookish Twitter 。。。more

。。。more

I picked up this book hoping for a whimsical family epic in the vein of Kate Atkinson, and in many ways A System delivers。 For a while I really couldn’t understand when I wasn’t hooked when the story had so many great ingredients。 But it lacks that essential element: charm。 Sadly, it’s overlong, the magic realism is laborious and the characters unlikeable。 So even though the prose is lively and fluent, and I can’t fault the translation, I found myself skimming sections, desperate to find a bit t I picked up this book hoping for a whimsical family epic in the vein of Kate Atkinson, and in many ways A System delivers。 For a while I really couldn’t understand when I wasn’t hooked when the story had so many great ingredients。 But it lacks that essential element: charm。 Sadly, it’s overlong, the magic realism is laborious and the characters unlikeable。 So even though the prose is lively and fluent, and I can’t fault the translation, I found myself skimming sections, desperate to find a bit that would catch my interest。 It never really happened。Despite an interesting concept, sadly this was a miss for me。*Thank you to Netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review* 。。。more

This was an enjoyable read that was part dramatic family saga and part mystery and both sides were completely compelling。 Well written, with well developed characters that were really engaging。 I really liked it。
