Summary

Homecoming by Katie Morton I was very excited to read this new book by Kate Morton, as her books are always so beautifully written, and this was no exception。 Told across two timelines, we are in 1959 where Nora is a young pregnant lady, coming to stay with her sister in law, and family, while she has her baby, and 1918 where Nora is in hospital unwell, and her Granddaughter Jess flies from the UK, where she has been living and working as a journalist, to be with her beloved Grandmother who brou Homecoming by Katie Morton I was very excited to read this new book by Kate Morton, as her books are always so beautifully written, and this was no exception。 Told across two timelines, we are in 1959 where Nora is a young pregnant lady, coming to stay with her sister in law, and family, while she has her baby, and 1918 where Nora is in hospital unwell, and her Granddaughter Jess flies from the UK, where she has been living and working as a journalist, to be with her beloved Grandmother who brought her up。Whilst staying at her Grandmother's house, Jess finds a book chronicling the events of 1959, when Nora's sister-in-law and her children were found dead by the creek after having a picnic。 The case was never satisfactorily resolved, and Jess in true journalistic style starts digging into the past to find out more。This book has everything to keep you enthralled。 A murder mystery with secrets, lies, and a few red herrings。 Some secret love and illicit affairs。 Some very likable and relatable characters。 Most of all, beautiful writing。My advanced copy was marred by the fact that for some reason all the ff, fi and fl had been removed! I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway。 Homecoming comes out next month and you need to get yourself a copy of this book。 Morton masterfully weaves two families stories together over decades。 The depth of character development is impressive。 It's very rare that an author leaves such an impression on their reader。 The characters changed literary positions throughout the novel and I was constantly surprised while reading。 I couldn't even try to figure out how characters were connected because I I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway。 Homecoming comes out next month and you need to get yourself a copy of this book。 Morton masterfully weaves two families stories together over decades。 The depth of character development is impressive。 It's very rare that an author leaves such an impression on their reader。 The characters changed literary positions throughout the novel and I was constantly surprised while reading。 I couldn't even try to figure out how characters were connected because I was so immersed in the story from page 1。 For me, the theme hinged on stories that are important to who children believe themselves to be; but, as adults, we have to choose to accept them, or change them for ourselves。 The theme was crystal clear to me towards the end, but I wonder how many other themes will emerge based on the reader's own life experience。 10/10。 。。。more

I won this ARC through a Goodreads Giveaway。 I have always been a fan of Kate Morton’s books。 She is an auto-buy author for me, so I was excited to win this book ahead of its release。 I was disappointed in this book。 The story at the heart of the book was good, but the pacing was off。 I was able to figure out what happened, but the reveal was still a good 100 pages out。 I think it could have been much better if it was shortened by about 200 pages。 This is probably more of a 2。5 star read, but I I won this ARC through a Goodreads Giveaway。 I have always been a fan of Kate Morton’s books。 She is an auto-buy author for me, so I was excited to win this book ahead of its release。 I was disappointed in this book。 The story at the heart of the book was good, but the pacing was off。 I was able to figure out what happened, but the reveal was still a good 100 pages out。 I think it could have been much better if it was shortened by about 200 pages。 This is probably more of a 2。5 star read, but I rounded it up。 。。。more

I've loved everything by Kate Morton, and this one was worth the wait。 More than just a mystery, she has a way of weaving together complex characters and stories that is unrivaled。 Though it was at times hard to read (the historical mystery involves a dead mother and children), I truly lost myself in this one。 I've loved everything by Kate Morton, and this one was worth the wait。 More than just a mystery, she has a way of weaving together complex characters and stories that is unrivaled。 Though it was at times hard to read (the historical mystery involves a dead mother and children), I truly lost myself in this one。 。。。more

Kate Morton's Homecoming comes out April 4。 I was lucky enough to read an e-arc, thanks to @netgalley 。 A number of remarkable women are at the centre of Homecoming。 The action moves between South Australia in the late 50's and modern day Sydney。 Jess, a journalist approaching 40, finds herself at loose ends in London, England。 She's unexpectedly single and trying to make mortgage payments writing freelance when she gets the call from Australia telling her that the grandmother who raised her is Kate Morton's Homecoming comes out April 4。 I was lucky enough to read an e-arc, thanks to @netgalley 。 A number of remarkable women are at the centre of Homecoming。 The action moves between South Australia in the late 50's and modern day Sydney。 Jess, a journalist approaching 40, finds herself at loose ends in London, England。 She's unexpectedly single and trying to make mortgage payments writing freelance when she gets the call from Australia telling her that the grandmother who raised her is in hospital。 Nora has apparently fallen while trying to find something in her attic。 Isabel flies to Sydney to support Nora and finds an unexpected mystery around her family history involving the death of a wealthy family in 1959。The story goes back and forth between Jess' investigation and the actual events of 1959。 There is a "book within a book" device, as Jess reads another writer's account of the story she is unraveling。 There are multiple perspectives on the same event, which is both compelling and frustrating at times。 I found myself flipping back and forth as pieces started to slot into place。Homecoming is about identity and place and family and the lengths you might go to to protect people you love or to keep their secrets。 I did not completely figure out the mystery until the final pages, which was rewarding。 If you are a Morton fan, this is a must-read。 If you haven't discovered her particular spin on family histories, this would be a great place to start。 4 and a half stars (it takes a while to get going。 。。。more

Homecoming is Kate Morton's latest dual narrative, historical fiction offering。 Like The Lake House and The Clockmaker's Daughter it is set across two timelines and in this case, countries。 It starts in Southern Australia in the late 1950s on Christmas Eve and joins up with a modern day narrative in 2018。 The story centres around a murder mystery in which an entire family is found lying dead in their Christmas Eve picnic spot, and how this becomes connected to the modern day heroine, Jess Turner Homecoming is Kate Morton's latest dual narrative, historical fiction offering。 Like The Lake House and The Clockmaker's Daughter it is set across two timelines and in this case, countries。 It starts in Southern Australia in the late 1950s on Christmas Eve and joins up with a modern day narrative in 2018。 The story centres around a murder mystery in which an entire family is found lying dead in their Christmas Eve picnic spot, and how this becomes connected to the modern day heroine, Jess Turner-Bridges。 She has come back to Australia, having lived in London for the past 20 years after the grandmother who raised her has suffered a debilitating fall and slipped into a coma。 As Jess explores some of the secrets her family never talked about she starts to uncover a past as devastating as her grandmother's illness is。 I really enjoyed the 2018 storyline and its twists and turns, though found it difficult to get into the 1950s one at first。 The pace really gathers up to about 90% of the way through the novel and then I found it a bit bitty and as if the author was trying to tie up all the loose ends of the plot。 Overall, it was another fantastic read by Kate Morton and I'd happily recommend the book。 Many thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for giving me an early copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

What a wonderful story。I was concerned when I saw the number of pages of this book that it would be a long-winded story, but it is a number of stories in one。I didn't guess that it was a who-dunnit until well into the book, and then my guess was wrong as to what had happened。Brilliant characters, brilliant storylines。 It was quite unusual for me to read a book partly set in Australia that covered so much of the continent。I will certainly look out for her previous books and any that she writes in What a wonderful story。I was concerned when I saw the number of pages of this book that it would be a long-winded story, but it is a number of stories in one。I didn't guess that it was a who-dunnit until well into the book, and then my guess was wrong as to what had happened。Brilliant characters, brilliant storylines。 It was quite unusual for me to read a book partly set in Australia that covered so much of the continent。I will certainly look out for her previous books and any that she writes in the future。Many thanks to the author for a brilliant book and to the publisher for an advanced copy for honest review。 。。。more

This is, in my humble opinion, Kate Morton’s best。It follows the story in 2018 of Jess, who left sydney to build a new life in London two decades earlier。 When her beloved grandmother, who practically raised her, has a fall climbing up to the attic and ends up in hospital, Jess returns to her grandmother’s Sydney mansion。 On a hospital visit, Jess hears her grandmother mutter garbled sentences as she comes in and out of consciousness pleading for her baby not to be taken。 What was so important u This is, in my humble opinion, Kate Morton’s best。It follows the story in 2018 of Jess, who left sydney to build a new life in London two decades earlier。 When her beloved grandmother, who practically raised her, has a fall climbing up to the attic and ends up in hospital, Jess returns to her grandmother’s Sydney mansion。 On a hospital visit, Jess hears her grandmother mutter garbled sentences as she comes in and out of consciousness pleading for her baby not to be taken。 What was so important up in that attic that her grandmother risked her safety to find? The narrative cuts back and forth to the Adelaide Hills in 1959, where on Christmas Eve, a local delivery man makes a gruesome discovery on the grounds of the grand estate, Halcyon。 The secrets of this day will lay hidden for decades。Morton is an absolute master at interweaving several plot lines into one coherent story that comes to the most satisfying conclusion。 This book is filled with family secrets, hidden diaries and - best of all - rambling old houses, that add a sense of beautiful foreboding to the tale。Homecoming was worth the five-year wait, it’s my absolute favourite book of 2023 so far and can’t imagine it being toppled by another ❤️ 。。。more
