Summary

Ryan Holiday's bestselling trilogy--The Obstacle Is the WayEgo is the Enemy, and Stillness is the Key--captivated professional athletes, CEOs, politicians, and entrepreneurs and helped bring Stoicism to millions of readers。 Now, in the first book of an exciting new series on the cardinal virtues of ancient philosophy, Holiday explores the most foundational virtue of all: Courage。

Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear。 The most repeated phrase in the Bible is "Be not afraid。" The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror。 It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you。 Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what's right, to do what's needed, to do what is true。 And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom。

In Courage Is Calling, Ryan Holiday breaks down the elements of fear, an expression of cowardice, the elements of courage, an expression of bravery, and lastly, the elements of heroism, an expression of valor。 Through engaging stories about historic and contemporary leaders, including Charles De Gaulle, Florence Nightingale, and Dr。 Martin Luther King Jr。, Holiday shows you how to conquer fear and practice courage in your daily life。

You'll also delve deep into the moral dilemmas and courageous acts of lesser-known, but equally as important, figures from ancient and modern history, such as Helvidius Priscus, a Roman Senator who stood his ground against emperor Vespasian, even in the face of death; Frank Serpico, a former New York City Police Department Detective who exposed police corruption; and Frederick Douglass and a slave named Nelly, whose fierce resistance against her captors inspired his own crusade to end slavery。

In a world in which fear runs rampant--when people would rather stand on the sidelines than speak out against injustice, go along with convention than bet on themselves, and turn a blind eye to the ugly realities of modern life--we need courage more than ever。 We need the courage of whistleblowers and risk takers。 We need the courage of activists and adventurers。 We need the courage of writers who speak the truth--and the courage of leaders to listen。

We need you to step into the arena and fight。

Highly recommendedThis was a great read and full of amazing advice and stories。 It has you doing your own little thought experiments and reflections of past actions the entire time。 I lived it and I recommend to anyone asking if I have a suggestion for their next read。

Big fan of Ryan Holiday but was not a fan of this book。 There were some inspirational stories, but it felt like a random assortment of examples that all stated the obvious - it is good to be courageous。

The first half spoke more to me than the second。 Don't stand on the sidelines of life, dare to ask for the ball。 Every phase has possibilities, but is always so short: as a young person, as a single, as married couple without children, as young parents。 Fear is that little voice, let it point you to the direction deep down you know you should take。 Realize your work, your familly, life is never simply going to give you your dreams。 The fact that no one is given those possibilities for free, ensu The first half spoke more to me than the second。 Don't stand on the sidelines of life, dare to ask for the ball。 Every phase has possibilities, but is always so short: as a young person, as a single, as married couple without children, as young parents。 Fear is that little voice, let it point you to the direction deep down you know you should take。 Realize your work, your familly, life is never simply going to give you your dreams。 The fact that no one is given those possibilities for free, ensures that they are still their for the few muster up the courage。 In his typical fashion, all "chapters" are 3min read and keep you engaged from cover to cover! 。。。more

What a read! Holiday’s work punched me in the eye multiple times throughout。 I may not be one of the 300 Spartans, but I can be courageous each day。

I like Ryan Holiday, but this teters close to self help。 It attempts to serve as a call to action and a counterculture movement against self serving 21st century society by highlighting the selflessness of great men and women throughout history。 It's a solid book on moral courage and the need for it。 However it kinda drives the point home in two chapters and keeps hammering。 I like Ryan Holiday, but this teters close to self help。 It attempts to serve as a call to action and a counterculture movement against self serving 21st century society by highlighting the selflessness of great men and women throughout history。 It's a solid book on moral courage and the need for it。 However it kinda drives the point home in two chapters and keeps hammering。 。。。more

Ryan’s approach to breaking down a big concept into small sized ideas and citing examples make it an interesting read, and at the same time ensures that you aren’t overwhelmed by it。

Ryan Holidays first book on the Four Virtues of Stoicism starts the series strong! With stories from history and an afterword from his own experience, each chapter feels like it can stand alone and yet contribute to the overall narrative of the book。 Courage is calling is a call to action in a world where we often let our fears rule us。 If you are going through wharf time and need some motivation, guidance or a reminder that you are not alone then read this book!

As a fan of Ryan Holiday's work, Courage Is Calling was a pleasant surprise。 This is the first in a series of four books that are going to be based on each of the four cardinal virtues。 As in Holiday's previous books, Courage Is Calling has a series of short chapters and each of them focuses on a historical event or figure。 Despite the familiar structure, the book's really good, but I found that the core concept of the book's repeated ad nauseam。 Even when you use a deluge of examples from histo As a fan of Ryan Holiday's work, Courage Is Calling was a pleasant surprise。 This is the first in a series of four books that are going to be based on each of the four cardinal virtues。 As in Holiday's previous books, Courage Is Calling has a series of short chapters and each of them focuses on a historical event or figure。 Despite the familiar structure, the book's really good, but I found that the core concept of the book's repeated ad nauseam。 Even when you use a deluge of examples from history books, there are only so many ways you can say "courage is good"。 That said, I enjoyed my time with the book and I feel like I learned a lot from it。 Unlike previous books from Holiday, I'm not dying to re-read this one which is my only complaint。 。。。more

I listened to this on audio but I’ve also purchased a hard copy。I think I will read it again in print as it seems to be designed for daily short reads over time。 I really liked the stories and quotes because many were new to me and not the regular overused stories in so much nonfiction these days。I’m looking forward to the other 3 in the Stoic Series Holiday hints at at the beginning of the book。

There is no deed in this life so impossible that you cannot do it。 Your whole life should be lived as a heroic deed。

The book was well written in the style I've seen in other Ryan Holiday books, that is, identifying lots of (mostly) men who showed courage (mostly through war) throughout history。 This book - like another of Holiday's books, the Obstacle is the Way - has a dearth of female examples。 Also, there are only a few examples of courage displayed outside of a military or political environment。 The book was well written in the style I've seen in other Ryan Holiday books, that is, identifying lots of (mostly) men who showed courage (mostly through war) throughout history。 This book - like another of Holiday's books, the Obstacle is the Way - has a dearth of female examples。 Also, there are only a few examples of courage displayed outside of a military or political environment。 。。。more

Fue una guía en el momento que yo necesité un refuerzo sobre mi coraje y de quien debo aprenderlo。Merece la pena leerlo con detenimiento y poner especial atención al final。 Ryan Holiday abrió su corazón en esas ultimas líneas。

I really like this book。 As a young person I tend to always be overthinkg about things and thinking about how others look at me, what they think of me and trying not to be shameful。 This book opened my eyes and made me see that I shouldn't be focusin my attention on that and insted I shoud focus on myself and my things so when others criticize me they will not see any mistakes。 I think courgae is very important in life and I think it was very good for me to read this book at this age, even bette I really like this book。 As a young person I tend to always be overthinkg about things and thinking about how others look at me, what they think of me and trying not to be shameful。 This book opened my eyes and made me see that I shouldn't be focusin my attention on that and insted I shoud focus on myself and my things so when others criticize me they will not see any mistakes。 I think courgae is very important in life and I think it was very good for me to read this book at this age, even better if I start applying the advises and the concepts that were explained on it in my life。 。。。more

The first of a new series of Ryan Holiday, and what a way to start。With great stories and on-point insights he’s sharing the magic behind courage: the bravery of getting back up when you fall and the beauty of fighting for something bigger than yourself。You don’t need to Hercules to have courage。 Grab the book and start your path to overcome your fears。

Every chapter mentioned a great example in history or politics about being courageous, and the real meaning of being courageous led to the bold action to make changes。 For example, Ryan Holiday emphasized why Frederick Douglass, Roosevelt, BJ Johnson, or French Nationalists took action regardless of the consequences。 It could be lonely or challenging to be courageous, but it represents the ethic of being bold。 Ryan repeated the meaning and explained the action of each example for the audience to Every chapter mentioned a great example in history or politics about being courageous, and the real meaning of being courageous led to the bold action to make changes。 For example, Ryan Holiday emphasized why Frederick Douglass, Roosevelt, BJ Johnson, or French Nationalists took action regardless of the consequences。 It could be lonely or challenging to be courageous, but it represents the ethic of being bold。 Ryan repeated the meaning and explained the action of each example for the audience to understand and think about。 It's a great book to train the mind to be stoic。 。。。more

A good read, with very interesting examples from both today, and 2000 years ago, from various warriors, strategists, and stoics, as well as "ordinary" people, or civilians, to get you to be courageous in your own life, no matter the challenge at hand: athletes, warriors, businessmen, or even a mother。 We all face our challenges: be scared, that's normal, but don't be afraid。 Be scared, but prepare yourself for every possible obstacle, for when you're prepared, you're prepared to face the fear。 F A good read, with very interesting examples from both today, and 2000 years ago, from various warriors, strategists, and stoics, as well as "ordinary" people, or civilians, to get you to be courageous in your own life, no matter the challenge at hand: athletes, warriors, businessmen, or even a mother。 We all face our challenges: be scared, that's normal, but don't be afraid。 Be scared, but prepare yourself for every possible obstacle, for when you're prepared, you're prepared to face the fear。 Fortune favours the brave。It is the first book of 4, one for each virtue, and it extensively explains both fear vs courage vs heroism。It is a good read and I look forward to reading Holiday's next book Discipline is Destiny。 。。。more

Highly recommend。 Holiday gives us the first book of a four book series on the stoic virtues。 This is the second book I’ve read of holidays。 He does a masterful job of weaving, stoic, history, and philosophy with modern day, practical application and references of figures throughout our history that have displayed these virtues。 This is not a historical reference as much as it is a framework for us to look at our lives differently and develop the muscle of courage。

Classic Ryan Holiday。Great anecdotes on overcoming fear, exhibiting courage and training yourself to use it more in your everyday life。 It's not about perfection。 It's about exhibiting courage more often than not, and being able to correct yourself when slipping up or getting off track。 Classic Ryan Holiday。Great anecdotes on overcoming fear, exhibiting courage and training yourself to use it more in your everyday life。 It's not about perfection。 It's about exhibiting courage more often than not, and being able to correct yourself when slipping up or getting off track。 。。。more

“if courage is never required in your life you are living a boring life。” “Whatever you are not changing you are choosing。”“I was afraid’ is not an excuse that ages well。”
